- A question that I get asked more than any other about the Sony system is what are my settings for my Sony cameras. These cameras have an incredible number of options and setting them up and customizing them can be a daunting task. In this video I go through all of my personal settings for the Sony Alpha 7RIV.
This is a long video, just over an hour long, so grab some coffee, your camera and check out these settings, you may find some that you did not know about and may way to change on your camera.
In this video I only go through the menu options that I customize, I will follow this video up with a couple others with my custom button settings, Function Menu, GPS settings, and much more.
As always please let me know if you have any questions by posting a comment.

Thanks Jaun, lovely video , beautifully explained ☺
Thank you. Glad you enjoyed it and I hope you got something out of it.
Can you make a video on how to change and set all the custom buttons on Sony cameras and lens
Thanks Juan! I just picked up an A7R4 and it is the first Sony I've owned so this was super helpful. I've watched a couple other videos that covered the settings but I really appreciate your approach to walk thru them screen by screen rather than jumping around from feature to feature. Looking forward to future videos about how you configure your custom buttons and menu!
Glad you found the video helpful.
Agree 100 percent it is hard to see any difference between compressed and uncompressed RAW. And internet trolls will come :). The end result is what matters....not what lab geeks have to say because they wouldn't know a good photo anyway
AMEN!
I just purchased an a7Riv and this tutorial was exceptionally helpful. Thank you for taking the time to produce this video!
Great to hear!
Brilliantly useful, thanks Juan! Love the way you explain what the settings do and the reasons for what you have chosen. Looking forward to the videos on your menu settings, custom key settings, and function menu settings. Hopefully you can also do a video (if you have time) on the interval shooting function mode and AF area registration.
Margaret, thank you, glad you enjoyed the video. I do have it on my list to do a video on the interval shooting menu.
Hi Juan, Good video on the A7RM4 settings. I definitely agree about turning off the DRO. I caught that a few weeks ago as all my Raw images looked so much darker then what I was seeing on the camera LED screen. It drove me crazy. Once I turned it off my Raw images look close to what a JPG look like. So much easier to post process now. Now from what I understand it may help having DRO on with video. I don’t do that much video yet with the A7RM4 so I’m not completely sure. Maybe that is something you could answer. Cheers!
Interesting, I have never tried DRO with video. I don't do much video with this camera so I have not had the chance to try this out, but I will try to remember to test it. Thanks.
Be sure about your instruction. For example 33:37, 'zoom is disabled because it only works w certain motorized zoom lenses' is wrong. they are disabled because you are shooting RAW, and digital zoom in only available in JPEG, when ONLY shooting JPEG. I don't want to pick your settings tutorial apart but it is important that users are not mislead or confused. Happy shooting.
Like others I just got my A7r4 and found this video very helpful. And am looking forward to future sessions
Thank you!
How do you find the Sony RMT-P1BT Wireless Remote Commander as a remote shutter. is it quick and reliable in use? Do you have to pair it every time you want to use it? What about using it with two bodies, A7Riv & A9. It is physically less 'klunky' than a conventional wireless remote shutter with its transmitter and receiver in the hotshoe plugged into a port on the side but is it as easy to use? great video's by the way, very useful, keep up the good work. Thanks.
Ys it's quick and reliable. You pay it with one camera at a time. If you want to use it with another camera you need to pair it which then it loses the previous pairing. It's easy to pair so it's not too much of a hassle. I MUCH prefer it to wired or optical remotes. very reliable and has quite a few functions for controlling video as well.
@@JuanPons Many thanks. Ordered one.
Juan very informative thank you. ;^D AU
This is a well done video!! Very well explain settings!! (Coming from canon r5.)
Shooting prodominantly wildlife, I thought you would have aps-c crop mode in there as well. Gif vid btw😀👍👌
Hi, the way I see it there is no reason to use the APS-C mode. You can crop the image in post and achieve the same thing, but keeping all the image data is kind of an insurance policy in case there was something in the frame that I may have missed. The only advantage as I see it about using the APS-C mode is that the files are smaller. Thanks for your comment!
Juan, I found you from watching Leigh, the Snapchick. This video really helped with your excellent explanations. I also like your rationale with the 7r4 vs the A9. They are different tools. I tried both and decided on the 7r4 for now, but if I am shooting flyers the no blackout feature is really great on the A9ll. Hope to have both bodies soon.
Glad to see you here!
I've just got myself an A7RIV after twenty years shooting A-mount, so this video has been invaluable in helping get all set up. Thanks so much for this.
So glad to hear it.
Easy to understand and very useful, thanks!
As soon as I saw u shoot compressed I wrote this comment & now I will exit the video
Great thorough video. I sub’d and look forward to more great Sony content. I will be picking up my A7 RIv this week!!!!!!
Awesome! Thank you!
Does Sony a7rivA works better a A7riv?
To be clear, I'm definitely not a troll, and just giving my point of view, but the compressed vs uncompressed it depends on the scenario and type of photo you take, in most of the case there shouldn't be difference, but in case you having strong shadow to recover or very smooth gradients in the sky or studio background, there is a big difference, 12bit will have more chance to show banding, and it happened plenty of time to me.
I would tend to agree with you
very good your video, congratulations
Thank you for all the infos it really helped
Just received my A7r4 today, very timely. I was going to cline the setting from my A7r3, but you showed me a few things that I didn’t even know what those were, so thank you much.
Glad I could help!
Another excellent video Juan. Thank you so much. Looking forward to the other videos you said are upcoming. I would appreciate additional ones for the three areas you said you would do if there is interest. Maybe you can combine those three into one video. Sorry, I didn’t write down exactly which three topics they were. Also, do you use Creatve Image Zoom (CIZ)? If yes, have you set up custom button for that and what do you think of CIZ? I understand it is only for JPEG when shooting in still mode.
No worries, I will be making those videos very soon. I have not really used Clear Image Zoom, it only works for jpgs and I never shoot jpgs so I have not even tested it.
I would be interested in how you setup and use your smartphone for gps on the a7riv and a7iii. Thanks Juan.
Juan, as a Canon shooter (5D Mk IV) for many years who just transitioned to Sony with the purchase of the A7R4, I found this walkthrough through the convoluted Sony menu system invaluable! I look forward to many more “instructional” videos to get up to speed on the Sony system. WELL DONE!!!
Tony, I also came from the Canon system so I know the challenges of switching. Glad I was able to make it a little easier.
Good video sharing brother
Thank you so much. I just got my a7R IV today and this video really got me up to speed. Like many others here, I'm a lifelong Canon shooter. I picked up a 5DMkIV a couple of years ago and was really dissatisfied with Canon's video performance, especially the horrendous 4K file format. So far, I'm loving the a7R. Autofocus is snappy, even with Canon glass.
Glad to be able to help!
Do you set up this settings on Manual?
Excellent Video explaining all the various functions and how to set it up. I would also appreciate a video on setting up the intervalometer function and your custom button settings. Thanks!
Those two videos are on my queue to record. Thanks!
Thanks Juan nice one! can you share your DAT files with your wildlife settings?
I have not done that, but I will try to do that soon. Thanks.
Appreciate your knowledge!
Glad you found it useful.
Very clear Juan. You are such a good teacher!!! Cheers from Buenos Aires.
Gracias!
Hi Juan, this is by far the most useful video I came across for my camera, you explained things that wanted to know and ould not find easly the answer, I will check the remaining series on custom settings, congrats .......
Problem is that compressed RAW files come with 12bit color depth. That worries me more actually. Especially when you take a images underexposed and brighten them up later on post.
In my experience this is only an issue with VERY fine detailed images with VERY smooth gradations. I have friends who are amazing landscape photographers and they also can't tell the difference and they shoot compressed as well.
@@JuanPons Hmmm…I think you see the delta in extreme situations. For example when you need to brighten the shadows up substantially. Sometimes I need to do that in my Wildlife work.
@@Stefan1968ful Yes for wildlife I very often need to bring up the shadows, sometimes substantially, and I do not like the results of the a9 in those situations. In my opinion the a7RIV does a much better job here.
please thank's Rhello and thank's for your helpfull vdeo but i really want a video Wwith the setting to appair the remote RMT-P1BT to the A7R4 please .thank's a lot
thank you,I just got my Sony A7R4. I am thrilled about it. Great video.
Nice video but the AF tracking sensitivity should be 1 or 2 for tracking , no the 5
Efrain, it depends on what you re trying to achieve. Setting Tracking sensitivity to 1 makes the AF system "Lock On" unto subjects, this is useful if you are trying to track a subject and other subjects cross it's path. What this means is that the AF is less "Responsive" to a dynamic environment. This is why I set mine to 5, so that the AF system is more responsive to dynamic situations and does not get "stuck" on one subject. Hope that helps.
@@JuanPons yes I do BIF and it is a must to be on 1 for tracking, thank you
Awesome video, what are your min and max ISO settings?
I set my Sony cameras to a Minimum of 100 and a Maximum of 12,800
@@JuanPons thank you sir, stay safe
You can set touch operation only to left side. I'm also left eye dominant and that helps.
Very very clear and useful. Thanks.
Glad it was helpful!
I just bought my first Sony and this was just what I needed. Thanks Juan.
Awesome!
Thank you! Great video!
Glad you liked it!
👍📸👍
Hi Juan, what’s the best setting for B&W shooting to gain rich dynamic range without needing post?
For sure you want to be shooting RAW, and for absolute best quality in uncompressed format. That will give you a little bit of an advantage over compressed.
Thank you so much
You're most welcome
Thanks so much for your time spent on coming up a video like this. It makes us to understand the camera so much faster and better!!! Appreciate.
Glad it was helpful!
Can you recommend some settings for shooting paintings and sculptures at museums better?
I am sorry I would not be the best to provide you settings for this because I am primarily a wildlife photographer. Having said that, I would use a tripod if possible, small aperture for a deep depth of field and a remote release since you will be dealing with long exposures. Hope that helps.
Museum and artwork photography is the type of photography I specialize in. Its quite a rare specialization. Shoot me an email at info@youreperfect.studio and I'll help you out with it. :-)
