Good narrative of relationship between sovereign nation of Hawaii and the US government, reference "School Begins" by Louis Dalrymple, January 25, 1899 cartoon, however, pics do not appear to be Hawaii beaches....
While the whole thing is certainly fucked up, there is zero chance the US releases Hawaii as a sovereign nation. There is too much investment in military infrastructure and the area is too strategic for the government to give up, especially considering current relations with China.
In addition, by the ruling of Texas v. White, State and Union are in a “indissoluble relation.” It was decided after the Civil war that, even though you don’t like US federal policy, there can be no divorce.
i know mental gymnastics is a buzz phrase these days but you're giving them way too much credit, business people saw an opportunity so exploit something/someone for profit...i'm guessing no mental gymnastics were needed
Law abidement is mere suggestion for upper and lower class. HOWEVER applicatability differs. The upper class administer illegal circumventions of law. The lower classes are receivers (victims, survivors) of such illegal circumventions. (Ie. building code particularly)

The reason the government is taking so long to address native Hawaiians issues is they want to stall as long as possible and make it grid locked so they can do nothing about it
2:50 regarding citizenship. To be consistent with a modern interpretation of citizenship you’d have to say that yes, they were Hawaiians. Eg there are a lot of Australians whose primary identity is not tied to citizenship to this country, but instead to their ethnic background, country of origin or religion. But it would be offensive for me to say they aren’t Australians.
That logic only works when it is applied to non-white minorities. Whites are not allowed to be natives by heritage or birth, in the current political climate
Texas v. White clearly states that the relationship between State and Union is indissoluble. To quote, it is “final.” I personally feel this is a key factor in Puerto Rico’s situation. If Puerto Rico would ever need to be independent, such as cultural differences or lack of federal support, it would be impossible if they were a State. Per constitutional law, Hawaii is here to stay, much to our nation’s benefit in Pacific power projection.
