- Pearl Jam guitarist Stone Gossard talks about the artists and songs that made him who he is, from "Dreamweaver," through Seattle's exciting early 80's underground scene, the bands that undeniably changed his life to some of the unexpected artists he listens to right now (and where he and Eddie Vedder diverge). He also talks about what has kept the core members of Pearl Jam together for so long and how singer Eddie Vedder still constantly surprises him.

Stone’s playing on the Mother Love Bone records is amazing.
Right. He was definitely the “Lead Guitarist” there.
I can't believe how the world has let Jane's Addiction fade into obscurity.
B leaguers
They only put out 2 albums broke up just when they were going to get big!!!!
Well...but now "the essence" of JA is somehow the opposite of what they used to be. Just look at Perry...wearing kinda expensive clothes and he's now totally plastic fantastic. Even Navarro was kinda a big poser (attitude, looks) especially when he was dating Carmen Elektra. They used to be so alternative/underground in the early days ... then they went totally jet set.
@@danosoprano5853
3 albums before the break-up. The 1st was the live album on XXX.
Saw them on the NINJA tour in 2009 with Eric Avery on bass. They were incredible.
Ahhhh, Stoney Gossard. I love him so much. Off the cuff, and calls it like he sees it!
Stone is a rhythmic riff master
absolutely!!! the master!!
stop it he is a b leaguer
@@Dave_Wight_The_Rock_Oracle lmfao you’re kidding right? Stone is the MAN. B leaguer? Bahahahhaa
@@WhatKiDD7.3 are we joking here, you think he is on the level of Rhoads and van halen? you think he is that kind of player and songwriter?
@@Dave_Wight_The_Rock_Oracle You’re talking apples and oranges. Do I think he’s the same level of songwriter? YES. Musically and Lyrically. Do I think he’s a shredder and technically proficient? No.
Two totally different different genres. And the end of the day, you can’t deny stone’s catalog of writing credits and his impact on music Mac basically being on the forefront of the Seattle scene with Green River and Mother Love Bone.
They created a wave they changed music, seemingly overnight.
Now, you want to talk EVH and RANDY and Zakk Wylde? Ok. But you can’t compare any 3 of those guys i just mentioned with Clapton or John Mayer.
All amazing guitarists and riff legends in there own right for sure. All I’m saying is that you can’t deny his contribution: that’s all.
Green River, Mother Lovebone, Temple of the dog, Brad, Pearl jam... quite a legacy.
Shitty depressing music
Satchel and Mad Season too...
I love this man. He seems uncomfortable though. I love that everyone in PJ is hugely talented but are uncomfortable talking about themselves. Very humble.
What's especially interesting and cool is the fact that Stone grew up privileged. There aren't many individuals that have that kind of privileged background plus enormous personal success and remain as down-to-earth, likeable, and decent as Stone. He represents the best of America, whereas the Kardashians and Trump represent the worst.
@@colico14 That's a PNW thing. You don't see a lot of bling in Seattle, especially for the amount of money in the city, It's more an old money town, where people are more about blending in, and not being pretentious. Not to say there aren't a segment that do it, but you are far more likely to see a Tesla or a Subaru in a wealthy neighbourhood, than an Italian sports car. That kind of runs from Vancouver BC, down to Portland, and even as far as San Jose, although Silicon Valley has brought out the worst in some people in the Bay Area. It's definitely not Miami.
criminally underrated guitarist. learn the "20th century" riff and play it through the whole song. this is an exact example of his praise for jane's. it's in the groove.
Not really underrated.
@@bloomtikbloom9593 they don't quite get how to use that word do they?
not on any level he is a B leaguer
Underrated is the most cliche’ word used on UA-cam
Underrated? By who? Name them.
My favorite PJ song is No Way , written by Stone . He’s humble , intelligent, funny and cares about the environment & people. Not only is he a FN killer guitar player & song writer , he’s a FN rad human being even more so . I’m forever in debt to Stone & PJ . Thank you fellas 🤙
No Way is such a groove
I also loved MFC, Wishlist and In Hiding.
Yield was so great 👍
I believe Yield was their best work especially Stone’s work. In my opinion Yield was last great 90’s record to come out of any artist.
Awesome track! I think he wrote both the music and lyrics on that, as well as the glorious All Those Yesterdays!
@@tuladog77 After Ten, Yield is my favorite of '90s PJ. I was blown away by how much those songs affected me and stayed with me for months, years.
Every time Stone gives an interview it makes me wanna count how many times he says "you know". lol
You know, no one, you know, is making you, you know, watch the, you know, video, you know.
1,634 times
My husband counted. 293.
I know 😊
You know? I think Stone giving so many props to Janes Addiction and Perry is pretty cool you know?
I was late to the party in the late 90's because I thought "been caught stealing" was just a one hit wonder...little did I know the first 2 albums they made are incredible...same with Smashing Pumpkins and Alice in Chains...also at the same time Dookie, The Chronic, Cypress Hill, Sublime, and of course Soundgarden, Nirvana, RHCP and Pearl Jam were changing the course music. What a time to live!
Y U N O
Absolute legend. I wish someone would make a video with every "you know" he said. It would probably be a 15 minute video.😆
Was thinking that the entire time.
He says "You know" soooo much, he could be an NBA player!!!
That’s a musician thing!
I wish I read this after I listened…all my focus is now on the “you know”s and I can’t tune it out!! you know…
@@douglasdog1 nah...would've happened to you, even if no one said anything!!! You know?
I love anything Stone has gotten his hands into. He does have a heavy metal backbone, and that has been his angle. Huge Motley Crue fan myself, but Pearl Jam can bring the noise as anyone else. My favorite Pearl Jam moment is their song “Animal” live on MTV.
I love Jane's Addiction so much. Dave Navarro is one of my guitar heroes. I have a lot of respect for Stone Gossard and Jeff Ament for all the exposure they give to Grunge in the late 80's early 90's with Green River, Mother Love Bone, an PJ. I stopped listen to Pearl Jam since year 2006 but still respect them a lot, that same thing happens to me with Nirvana, and Foo Fighters I think I enjoyed them enough since the 90's.
Don't forget temple of the dog
@@onepunchflan3071 yes, I love them too. To me Temple is more a Chris Cornell project, a heartbreaking tribute to Andrew Wood ❤️
His thought on Black made the hair stand. Man these songs are part of me. Thank goodness they made these
glad to see jane's getting their flowers
Some of the stuff on Nothings Shocking, I read some of those bass lines were written all the way back in 1982. Insane. Totally amazing. That band had outstanding chemistry. Also I think Stone and Mike are incredibly underrated guitar players.
Eric Avery made Janes. His bass lines were the foundation of all those songs. Once he left they were never the same .
Stone is a riff master huge influence on me as a guitar player and a real dude!!!!!
I am always here for a Stone Gossard convo.
What else would you be here for?
Thank you for making this interview happen. I love some Stone and PJ
Stone says "you know" 293 times in 50 minutes. Thats 5.86 "you knows" per minute. you know?
I counted 632 times? Y U N O ?
This was a fun discovery. I think Stone is criminally underrated. He was one of the guitarists made me want to pick up a guitar. Love watching his interviews too - he's just a really genuine guy.
Y U N O
Stone wrote the most iconic guitar riffs to ever come out of the 90s!!
Cool to hear someone from his generation give Drake his flowers. As a music fan in general, I appreciate a wide variety of genres. Both Drake and Pearl Jam have made massive contributions to music in one way or another. Nice to see one recognize each other despite being worlds apart in a lot of ways 👌🏼
As opposed to Gossard’s band mate publicly speaking for the entire band and declaring Kanye West an “asshole”.
@@Fakename70 When was this?
@@littlechalkie8030
I can’t remember the exact year, but, I believe it had something to do with when both acts played Bonnaroo. Maybe Pearl Jam’s set ran long and cut into West’s, who promptly threw a mini tantrum? And, I don’t recall the exact scenario, but both Pearl Jam’s “singer” and then-President Obama publicly called West an asshole at the time. I don’t remember who said it first, but, one of them quoted the other when saying it.
@@Fakename70okay, thanks for the info. i really dislike that vedder is friends with that war criminal.

The 1st two Motley Crue albums are AWESOME!🤘Too Fast For Love and Shout At The Devil have a good influence of Punk, Metal and Power-Pop sound to them.
the first is B league, Shout at the devil really started their A league run
@@Dave_Wight_The_Rock_Oraclestarted and ended it? Because Theater of Pain was awful. Girls, Girls, Girls was good and Dr Feelgood had highlights but largely was mediocre.
@@jasoncarey2092 Theater was a really heavy sounding album, I liked it, they wrote some classics from each of those albums, they are still standing, A leaguers
@Syntax LOL!
@Syntax why are you tracking what bedwetters listen to? I'm not sure if we are to infer you're a Crue fan or not. I just know people who like hard rock like the Crue and of course only low standard music fans like frauds like Peatl Jam. You must be listening to metal covers of Coldplay then, but that begs the question why? You realize if you set the volume to the same number you'll recognize Crue is heavier than Coldplay.
What an incredibly likeable person Stone is. I already know why I love Pearl jam so incredibly!
Stone is THE MAN!!! 🔥🔥
Love that he said Gary Wright!
His hair is pretty great looking.
I love seeing him talk about how proud he is of the bands legacy, WHILE STILL DOING IT 🤣 legendary shit
i love him sooo much
Totally grew up with Pearl Jam. Loved them from when I was 13. Now he's just signed Tigercub, my favourite band around now. Just hope they get huge now, well deserved
Those first 2 Jane's albums are so awesome. They are classics!
then what happened??? eric avery left because perry is a queef
I love him, great guitarist. Had a huge crush on him back in the 90s. ❤
23:56 … a number of years ago while visiting relatives in Republic, Washington (small north central town, mining and timber pretty much played out, it’s struggling through some tough times) a small little article in the local paper caught my eye. Eddie had donated a ukulele to a local group to be auctioned off to raise money for the group (iirc)! I thought wow, what a great guy!!
I amire Stone Gossard. Am thankfull to have the chance to listen to his music.
Great interview. Great job moderating too, not long winded, but still plenty descriptive and informed. Relaxed, and personal, but still really professional.

“Transcendent Tribal Events”.is the perfect description of Janes Addiction.🤘
How RHCP became more famous then Janes addiction is beyond me. Janes addiction had it all..
Jane's self-destructed thanks to Perry's greed, while RHCP mostly carried on.
Longevity has its benefits.
I often thought the same thing. I like the peppers but Jane’s was on another level. They were one of the best.
I love both but rhcp are better imo
@@MRPERFECT_79 lol, no. I even remember an interview where Anthony and Flea wanted to give up music after seeing a Jane’s show because they were so much better and they could never hope to equal or surpass them.
Janes is way better then rhcp!!!!!! However janes only put out 2 albums and broke when they were going to get big!!!
Stone I think is an astronaut in secret. He travels to other galaxies and planets and that's where he gets his guitar and sound ideas. A true genius. Keep up the awesome work. 🎸
Awesome interview. Thanks.
Stone, amazing musician & human being ❤️
Love PJ and Jane’s AND the Crue. It is possible!
Stoney's got a little Jeff Goldblum in him :) Great interview.
There's only ONE Stone Gossard! Dude is so influential and original! PJ for Life!
Great interview. Thanks
The interviewer is doing a great job at these, keep her!

I love you Stoney. My dad used to listen to Gary Wright and I loved that song. "My love is Alive".
I've followed you since Mother Love Bone, then learned about Green River from there.
In fact, I wanted to date you back then. You're one year my senior BTW.
Everytime Stone says "ya know" take a shot😂
You will be in the emergency room in less than ten minutes.
Stones the man! 👍🏽
I remember getting ‘Nothing Shocking’ as a promo in the my small town record store…..and it hit you like a wall. It just bowled you over. Very formative.
Then saw them on an ‘off’ night’ in Spokane and had the opposite reaction. Throes of a drug addiction and burn out.
I loved the album before that. That was the one for me. Saw them in 87’. Amazing Opening for love and rockets They scared love and rockets crowd. Literally. It was hilarious
After listening to him talk about pop music, I can't believe he didn't mention Daft Punk. One of the greatest bands ever!
Woow incredible guy, Stone's a real original with a ton of legacy behind him now.. he done a ton of great albums.. respect is due! Wish I could meet him someday. Got a lot in common with the man except selling millions of records 🤣
What a guy. Love him
As much as I love Stone Gossard and PJ (he was the first musician I really connected with), I am really over him downplaying/trashing his own guitar playing. He does this in every contemporary interview he does now.
No one in Pearl Jam is trying to replicate Dream Theatre or Periphery. But Stone is an AMAZING rhythm guitarist. He plays exactly what the song needs. I don’t want to discount his opinions of himself and assessment of his own art; I don’t think it’s disingenuous. But he’s the only person who believes that.
Also, he’s not dead. If he wants to improve or explore new aspects of his playing, he totally can.
Over-humility can actually be off-putting. True
he is a b leaguer he knows it
@@Dave_Wight_The_Rock_Oracle A League must be tiny. There's a only a handful of rhythm players better than he is.
Fun interview. Make it even more fun; get a case of beer and take a sip each time he says “you know”.
Not enough beer for that game
Just when I didn't think I could relate more to this interview.. "Sportsradio." What a great answer.
That was AMAIZNG i laughed OUTLOUD took two days to watch.
I went to Perth when I was in the navy, I hope to see Sydney some day
I'm stunned that Stone is 55 and still doesn't know music theory. I don't mean that negatively. He has gotten by just fine and that's great, it's just hard to comprehend how he could get this far down the road and not figure it out by now because music theory isn't terribly complicated. I have to believe he's exaggerating, just a bit.
He knows it, just doesn't know he knows it
He knows the basics, that's more than enough. It's not that he's gotta play jazz or classical music...
I love Stone, this is the best i got...losing grammys in my basement LOL
So cool he.mentioned randy.hansen saw him open for steve.miller it was awsome
Stone seems to be a really nice, down to earth guy....I want to be his friend kkk

I'm Tim Parsons from the Seattle grunge scenes. I remember Jason screwing everything up before 10 came out. And right before Kurt Cobain's death. Renton was the place. Kennedale elementary for Jeremy's spoken. The apartment in the valley for Black. Jason being the dude that broke that old blue Plymouth Super Bird in the parking lot. Where Chis Cornell offered his autograph.

No, he’s appreciated exactly right as PJ’s maestro
Stone is a phenomenal musician and human being. Great interview!!
Stone basically is one of the grandfathers of Grunge.
Green River, then Mother Love Bone, then Temple of The Dog and Pearl Jam.
He's not under appreciated, his riffs made all of these basically.

I'm also from Seattle and followed them for many years, but once he said he was bothered by his SKIN COLOR AND BEING A MAN, that when I stopped the video, no matter what your skin color is or your gender always be proud of who and what you are!!..YOU KNOW!
Exactly!
Bit pathetic tbh but I love stone for the music regardless
He’s not slagging on who he is or whiteness or being male. He’s simply being humble and acknowledging that society is unequal and gives privilege at an institutional level to white men. It’s a historical fact
@@beohyl he is just another liberal that's afraid of being canceled, he is a fucking disgrace!
I don't even know wtf he was saying when he said that, sounded like he was hinting the reason for his success is because he's a white male, he's not really all white anyway, him being a med and irish, not at all Germanic, but I know the game he's playing.
Stone is so accommodating and eloquent for such an awkward , uninformed and inept interviewer. I felt bad for him. Such a good sport.
Lost dogs is my favorite work by pj.

Actually the Mother Love Bone album was like "the bridge" between the 80's glam/hair and 90's grunge music.
Yes it was. To narrow it down even more? Bone China on apple was the song. Listen to thst tune and you will hear pearl jam starting to rear its head. I loved Andrew's work with MLB but would have loved to have heard Vedder version of bone chiba

Goddamn- Stone is the man..
Stoney needs to reestablish himself as the musical backbone of PJ.
Why? The music of Pearl jam has only become more dimensional and worthwhile. What's missing? Nothing, that's what. I'm sure his contributions have been exactly what they should have been through the years. I doubt he was the grail in the beginning as well. They're a band
I get what you mean, the early days Ten and Vs and the first Brad album were great. He’s definitely taken a step back, I think after VS Vedder took over.
Soooo ture pj was way better when he wrote the music!!!!
Anyone who's been with the band since day one knows they were much better when he was the main guy. That's just reality.

He just came into Abbruzezzes dressing room and told him after this tour were getting a new drummer. Matt's a great drummer and I'm glad they nabbed the ex Soundgarden drummer. He was in temple of the dog. He knew the songs. I just think Stone did Abbruzzese wrong
Stone did Dave wrong because Eddie made him. If not for Ed's dislike of Dave enjoying his Rockstar lifestyle, he would still be in the band. Ed was trying to pull back from the media and Dave did an interview with some drum magazine. The final straw. Fast forward a decade and Ed marries a super model. Hypocrite.
