I’ve been fishing for 40 years and have found your videos refreshing. Particularly around advising fly fishers to get practical, value gear. Although, I’ll need more thought on the Crocs! Thanks.
If you have a Harbor freight store in your area they sell forceps and other tools that can be adapted for fishing. Much cheaper than buying at the fly fishing shop. It doesn’t hurt so much when you lose them.
Great recco! Luckily a friend loaned me a cheap pair he wasn’t using but I’ll definitely keep it in mind for next time. (And there always seems to be a next time when it comes to losing forceps haha)
Great video. Nothing over complicated just good well laid out info for anyone just starting their fly fishing journey. One thing I've found useful is keeping a journal of where I go fly fishing. Details of the area I'm fishing, things like access to the water, obstacles obstructions state of the water, what you caught there, illustrated with photos. My own journal shows places I've discovered, little chalk and gravel bed streams that people have no idea there's native brown trout in them.
Dude, the journal is a great idea. I haven’t done much of that but I could see it being an invaluable tool and something really neat to look back on. Might need to start that up. Thanks for the comment and support!
A most excellent video, Jon. I'm an East Coast (Orono, Maine) Fly Fishing Addict.. I agree with everything you said, be it gear selection or stewardship. PS) I'll keep watching if you keep making videos.
@@HeyJonMoore PS) My goto for smallmouth bass fishing is a mid 70s Plueger Medalist 1495 DA fly reel mated with a used Echo ION XL 6wt, 9' rod. I have accumulated quite a bit of fly fishing and spin fishing gear, but nothing was purchased new except for my Dryft wading pants. Everything else was a yard sale, Craigslist, or storage unit score....almost as much fun as actual fishing. :)
Great video. I would add a selection of mayflies over just caddis. Also learn to watch the fish! They will tell you everything you need to know about why you are/aren't catching and where and what they are eating.
Wow right on. Keep it simple, so much more fun. Reminds me of the old Trout Bum book by John, on how one can get caught up in all the gear. Great advice. If uever get up Yellowstone way come fly fish with me. Also like your lifestyle. Mark at Trout Bumming
this dude just give me peace. is that a thing? Hey great advice man, have been trying fly fish last summer and it was hell of a fight to even understand how to cast! (I hook myself on the back lol). I live in the Argentinian Patagonia and trout here seems to really like leeches. Any ways, great video, keep 'em comming!
Man, thank you for the kind words. That means a ton. Patagonia! So cool. That’s a bucket list location for me. Just keep at it. You’ll get the casting figured out. Maybe you can show me the ropes if I ever make it down there. Good luck!
Great video as always! Tried to get into fly fishing years ago but became frustrated. Been thinking about giving it a try again and this video helped make that decision.
Great stuff, Jon. Congratulations. Exactly the right tone and approach for me.
Thank you man! I’m stoked that you enjoyed it
I totally agree with the Elk Hair Caddis choice!
Absolutely! X-caddis is my ride or die
Wow - a fly guy with no attitude or obnoxiousness. Thanks for an informative video.
Haha! Nothing to it but to do it. I appreciate the comment 🙌

Well I appreciate you saying so! That means a lot.
Haha oh man the crocs are great for summer wet wading. Gotta try it
@@HeyJonMoore . Regards. I can’t believe it - daughter and son-in-law arrived today both wearing Crocs!

Throw a chubby/hopper in that fly box 👌👌 spot on advice brotha. Redington classic trout is best bang for the buck hands down.
Amen! Dude I can’t wait to get out on those eastern streams with ya

100%
Thanks man!
Love the advice even though I don’t fish much. Do you catch and cook? That’s a great money saver- and fish are a great healthy food! 🎣
Thanks Susan! Pretty rare but I do occasionally keep a fish. I just love river systems and learning about the quarry :)
Great advice all around. No need to over complicate it if you are just starting out. Well done!
Ayyy thank you brotha! Hope we can get out to fish one day
@@HeyJonMoore I would love that! Let’s make it happen
Thanks Jon, another helpful video. Blue skies!
Thanks brotha! I’m stoked you found it helpful
Catch and cook- earning that dinner! Enjoy your meal, hopefully you have some veggies on the side. 😊
That’s right! Thanks Susan. No veggies this time but next time for sure!

Exactly 🙌 Man, you just called out one of my favorite books. I'll definitely reach out next time I'm in your neck of the woods. Tight lines!

I got into tenkara after going on long hikes along streams/lakes. Flyfishing is definitely addictive. Great video man - keep it up.
Oh man Tenkara is a ton of fun! I definitely spent some time going down that rabbit hole. Thanks for the support 🤙
