The first number one single to feature rap. Deborah Harry and her boyfriend enamored with the emerging hip-hop scene in 1978 in New York, and they became friends with one of the pioneers of rap, Fab 5 Freddy from Bedford-Stuy, who introduced them to some of the underground clubs we're emerging hip hop artists were literally creating the genre. They would have the DJs spinning disks and the aspiring MCS would get up there and take their turn doing bars and freestyle rap. So they decided to write a song about the experience. They also reference not only their friend Freddy, but also Grandmaster Flash who was another huge pioneer of hip-hop from New York City.
In fact the very title of the song Rapture is a pun referring to the word rap.
People say this wasn't the first Rap hit to go to number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, because it was not all Rap. But funny thing, it foresaw the use of Rap added to song, and not just simply Rap all through the song. This is pretty common now.

At the time MTV did not run rap music. The band Blondie brought rap music to middle America via MTV.
She exits with the band. Remember Blondie is the name of the band. Debbie Harry is the lead singer.
This was the first Rap song to go to #1 on the Billboard Hot 100. It was historic and opened a lot of doors to Rap.
