"Rapture" is a song by American rock band Blondie from their fifth studio album Autoamerican (1980). Written by band members Debbie Harry and Chris Stein, and produced by Mike Chapman, the song was released as the second and final single from Autoamerican on January 12, 1981, by Chrysalis Records. Musically, "Rapture" is a combination of disco, funk and hip hop with a rap section forming an extended coda.[3] "Rapture" was another commercial success for the band, shipping one million copies in the United States, where it was certified Gold by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) and spent two weeks at number one on the Billboard Hot 100, their fourth and last single to reach number one. It was the first number-one single in the United States to feature rap vocals. The single also peaked at number three in Canada, and number five in Australia and the United Kingdom.
Very good choice to review. You will like some of her other songs too. Now over 40 years old....I think she would get a kick out of this watching your reaction. Your whole team do great reviews. Keep up the great work.

Yes, and it is surprising to you hip hopsters that "rap", has been installed by heavy rockers like Frank Zappa, Jim Morrison and long before Queen Latifah and Aerosmith with Run DMC, Blondie here successfully combines rock, disco and hip hop.
Lots of really big hits. Mainly a new wave/rock band but often leaned towards funky and even touched on disco. Check out "Heart of Glass," "Call Me," and "One Way or Another"
WOW! This video is like a miracle - it's the first proof I've seen that the youngest generation aren't racist. They didn't flinch at all. They see people in this video has humans, not colors. Amazingly good sign!
There is a lot of Rap history represented in this vid. Fab Five Freddie, Jean-Michel Basquiet, Lee Quinone, William Barnes. The song is from 1980 and the rap style was very contemporary for the east side. She References Grand Master Flash in her rap bars. This was the first Billboard #1 song with rap in it, though Sugarhill Gang cracked the top 100 (36) earlier in ‘79. Debbie Harry (singer here) was even involved in them getting that song together. She has been a surprising influence in the early scene.
This was the FIRST song with rap in it to ever hit the charts. The man she refers to is Fab Five Freddie, a hip hop pioneer. The video also includes Le Quinones and Jeam Michel Basqiat, both graffitti artists of the best in their own rights, which is what the video is, graffitti come to life from the streets. It was considered both hip hop and rap, as well as disco and rock. The sugar hill gang, and early hip hop and rap stars were around, but this was the first time any of it was aired on the radios, and it was just what Debbie Harry and the rest of the band wanted, because they knew it was going to change music...
Blondie was the name of the band. Her name is Debra Harry. The guy leaving the party right behind her was her husband (or boyfriend) & the band leader.
This was actually from 1981 - when rap first really came into the scene. Deborah Harry (the blond lead singer) used her popularity to bring rap into the attention of mainstream because she had fans from all genres and Rapture was the first video/song to ever be aired on MTV - when MTV played music and was actually what it started off to be: Music TeleVision. In the first line of her rap, she gives shout out to Fab 5 Freddy (pioneer graffiti artist and first host of hip hop show on MTV). "Flash is cool" she is referring to Grandmaster Flash (the DJ/pioneer of hip hop) = basically these 2 gentlemen were the pioneers of hip hop! So, there you go!
This song was one of the very first introductions of Rap to the main stream. Before this it was in the streets and black clubs but the rest of the world hadn't heard of it yet! Boom!
Indeed this was the first female vocal & white rapper - first of its type of video too when MTV first began. Fun facts: Fab 5 Freddy - referred in the lyrics - is a hip-hop pioneer (he's the cat bopping in the white tails) and the DJ shown is the late artist Basquiat
I think it was the first of sorta rap song and probably the first female rapper. Blondie were pioneers. Don't forget, this is '80 or '81 before the dinosaurs and the men from Mars:))
Sugarhill Gang's Rapper's Delight, Kurtis Blow's The Breaks, The Fatback Band's King Tim III and The Sequence's Funk You Up, who happens to be the first female rappers to record a rap record were before Rapture and keep in mind Rapture wasn't listed as a rap song until the late 80's.
She is using that 70's rap style, and she collab'd w/a few big names in the NY rap community. This is another example of a punk band being around and seeing how rap was going to be a thing; the other is the Beastie Boys, who gave up their punk band to become rappers.
This came out around like 1981, very early when the hip hop scene was first exploding. Blondie was already getting very popular by the time this song hit. That's Fab Five Freddy standing there when she starts Rapping, he's a legend in Hip Hop, definitely one of the pioneers. This song was technically the first time MTV played a Rap Song. There were other girls rapping, MC Sha-Rock in the group Funky 4 + 1 was a female rapper. They had a jam called "That's the Joint" which come out in 1980, but also "Rappin and Rockin The House" which was over 15 minutes long in 1979. Technically MC Sha Rock is the first female rapper, soon to have a movie about her.
Blondie was a club girl back in the 80s, she was the first person to put a rap section in a major song. She didn't "invent rap", it had existed underground for a long time but she was the one who made it popular to the mainstream audience.
There have been rap before this, but it was Blondie and their lead singer Debbie Harry that introduced it to white audience. Back in the late 70s and early 80s radio was still fairly segregated - so that was quite a thing and a huge boost for the genre. It was an unusual track for Blondie to do, their normal style was a sort of brash pop - very catchy but not rap. Take a listen to their song "Dreaming", which has the best drumming you will ever hear! By the way, the people Debbie dances with who follow out at the end of the video are the other members of the band.
This was the first song to include rap to get to number 1 in the world [especially the US/UK]. 'Fab Five Freddy' is mentioned in the song, a local renowned artist. Edit: She is 75 now and still does shows/concerts.
This was the First Rap Song to make #1 on the charts it first came out in January 1981, although the Group Blonde was not a Rap Group, this song actually cleared the way for Rap to come out to the main stream. I remember hearing this in college and they played the song about 10 times a day.
And Debbie made the blond hair with roots popular. She made roots Cool. Dark hair in back. Blondie had the first number one rap video on MTV.. First of the punk bands too
In 1981 this song was released and for the first time rap reached the radio Top 100 songs list. For the first time ever the majority of the world heard rap. Two years earlier the first rap record had been cut, but it didn't come anywhere near the numbers of copies sold or popularity that this one reached. Several of the people in the background are members of the budding hip hop and graffiti art community. Ask your elders who Grand Master Flash is. He's in this video. This is also one of the first popular videos on the brand new cable channel called MTV.
Back in the day, this was a lot of people's introduction to rap. Not just white folks, in 1980 rap was a very New York thing. Hell, it was still a Brooklyn thing!
She would have been one of the first, but Sharon Green, also known as MC Sha-Rock recorded a rap song in 1979. She is credited as the first female rapper.
This song is from 1981 - this is probably the first pop song with rap in it and she'd certainly be the first female rapper since it was male dominated when rap started
So many great songs from Blondie (The name of the group not the female singer who is Debbie Harry) Heart of Glass, Sunday girl, Union City Blues, Hanging on the telephone, Atomic, One way or another, Picture this, Call me, Denis and Maria to name just a few. Here in the UK they had huge success including 19 top 20 hits (6 of which number one)
This is considered without argument the first RAP song to hit #1 on the billboard charts. Also this is the song because of her shout out that gave Fab 5 Freddy (the guy in the white tux) his name… he was fabulous Freddy 5 before this. And the DJ she shouts out as Flash is Grandmaster Flash Also making them the first two hip hop artist to appear on MTV. This is Punk Rock at its finest and only very few remember that Blondie was a true CBGB’s punk act
This is actually very old and she was definitely the first commercial artist rapping along with the Clash, in New York Punk and Rap shared the same space and the scenes crossed each other.
This song some say was tge first rap tune even though the style didn't actually become something til years after this song. Didn't like Bl8ndie much back then but, appreciate it more now.

That bass line is killer with that sax! It just is in a nice groove. Very unusual video. Loved it! I don’t care if it was first or not in rap. I know she took it from the streets because she said it! But the video…wow…no wonder this blew up on MTV.
She was the first female rapper by a span of several years. First rap song to top the Hot 100. This song is rather significant.
First song to contain rap that got on the radio, tv & went to #1. Blonde brought rap to the mainstream & paved the way for future rappers to be accepted in to the mainstream. She was able to do this because her & the band was huge back then.
The girl is spot on! This is from the early 80s bro! Gotta respect her talent! She's so stunning that often her skills were overlooked. Thanks for sharing! ps....it's really fun to sing with if you're a first soprano! 😹
actually blondie WAS the first rapper to have a mainstream song...
Rappers delight came out in 79 so that statement us incorrect
@@EbonyMaw874 first rap song to reach #1 on billboard. Rappers delight was the first rap song that charted nearly 2 years earlier. Rapture was the first rap song to play on mtv.
@@jasonnelson9707 Dude, Rapture is not a rap song.
Musically, "Rapture" is a combination of disco, funk and hip hop with a rap section forming an extended coda.[3]
"Rapture" was another commercial success for the band, shipping one million copies in the United States, where it was certified Gold by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) and spent two weeks at number one on the Billboard Hot 100, their fourth and last single to reach number one.
Hey, Hollywood- here’s your chemistry!
Watching you guys dance made my day!
I Miss Dancing!! Darn COVID.
Great reaction!
I distinctly remember this being the first rap song I ever heard.
I was a freshman in high school 1st time I ever heard rap too
12 year old me was happy as shit to hear this. Funk, rock, rap and jazz just amazing.
Great job guys! And yes, she WAS the 1st female to introduce rapping to MTV (which was pretty much the main source for popular music back in 1981)!
Once upon a time a punk band named Blondie. They played at CBGB's, with a real good singer Mrs Deborah Harry, who was an ex waitress at the Max's Kansas City. And they had a lot of hits.Try "Call me" . I just luv that band. Congrats for your video.
Debbie Trimble was her real name when she was a playboy bunny and waitress ...just so ya know
Yes, and it is surprising to you hip hopsters that "rap", has been installed by heavy rockers like Frank Zappa, Jim Morrison and long before Queen Latifah and Aerosmith with Run DMC, Blondie here successfully combines rock, disco and hip hop.
You all are such awesome reactors
Blonde is considered the "Mother of Rap."
No she it.
Boom!
Rapper's Delight was and still is more than Rapture especially outside the US
Indeed this was the first female vocal & white rapper - first of its type of video too when MTV first began.
Blondie's Rapture was the first rap song ever played on the radio. This was back in 1978.
This song is from 1980!! Yes she was the first female rapper. She is like 75 now and still going.
She was the second female rapper the great lady T was the first, I'm talking about the great TINA MARIE 1979.
What song?
The first was The Sequence. Although Teena's rap in Square Biz was way better the Debra's in Rapture Debra was before Teena
This was the first song to include rap to get to number 1 in the world [especially the US/UK]. 'Fab Five Freddy' is mentioned in the song, a local renowned artist.
Edit: She is 75 now and still does shows/concerts.
"She's not that old" 😳 she's like 70 something right now..this was 1979 or 80.
She’s 75
And still gorgeous.
This was the First Rap Song to make #1 on the charts it first came out in January 1981, although the Group Blonde was not a Rap Group, this song actually cleared the way for Rap to come out to the main stream. I remember hearing this in college and they played the song about 10 times a day.
Rapture is not a rap song. Just because you typed it in all caps doesn't make it so.
Hi Deborah Harry from the group Blondie just turned 76 so she was around 30-35 when Blondie recorded this song
And Debbie made the blond hair with roots popular. She made roots Cool. Dark hair in back. Blondie had the first number one rap video on MTV.. First of the punk bands too
1979 this lady turned 76 last week! She is still beautiful and sings great.
Well they say the birthplace of hip hop was the Bronx.
I'm a fan of Debbie and Blondie since 1978, and Debbie was one of the first female rappers.
She would have been one of the first, but Sharon Green, also known as MC Sha-Rock recorded a rap song in 1979. She is credited as the first female rapper.
Was she in funky 4 plus 1 more ?
@@darylobey8867 Yes! She was the Plus 1
She was born in my hometown.
This song is from 1981 - this is probably the first pop song with rap in it and she'd certainly be the first female rapper since it was male dominated when rap started
AND in 1979-80 or thereabouts, Blondie predicted "take your party to TV" ...... and HERE EVERYBODY IS in the 21st century doing it
So many great songs from Blondie (The name of the group not the female singer who is Debbie Harry) Heart of Glass, Sunday girl, Union City Blues, Hanging on the telephone, Atomic, One way or another, Picture this, Call me, Denis and Maria to name just a few.
And the DJ she shouts out as Flash is Grandmaster Flash
Also making them the first two hip hop artist to appear on MTV.
This is Punk Rock at its finest and only very few remember that Blondie was a true CBGB’s punk act
STILL PERFORMS. Blondie put out their most recent album 3 1/2 years ago. She's 75!!!!!!
Blondie started in the 1970'd the same as Hop Hop .Punk groups and Rappers would play the same clubs back in the day in NYC .
This takes me back to the era of video arcades and jukeboxes. LOL I remember hearing this for the first time in 1980. It came on the jukebox while I was playing an arcade machine called Scramble. Weird the things that stick with you.
PS. I believe the first female rapper was MC Sha-Rock. I think she started around 1977 or 78. But I'm getting old and my memory isn't always on point, so I can't swear to it.
This is the first time i ever seen this girl react with amazement ever. Usually she is tough as nails, like a judge...
She Graduated from "Centenary College" for Woman !! Centenary became Coed in 1976! It is located in Hackettstown, New Jersey, My hometown, She Graduated with an Associate of Arts degree in 1965. She would be seen around town ! I had a Crush on her but I was only 16
Blondie's "Rapture" (1981) was the first Rap based song to reach #1; The Sugar Hill Gang's earlier "Rapper's Delight " (1979) was the first Rap song to make the Top 40! As for Debbie Harry being THE first female rapper or one of the first? Both might be possible but there is little doubt she was the first to reach Number One!
Angie Stone was actually apart of one of the first female Hip-Hop groups, Sequence. About the same time this song came out
It was before this song came out
This band was very close to hip hop artists. They were involve in the hip hop movie Wild Styles
Blondie-the sound of 70s and 80s NYC. Raw and real.
Debbie Harry was the first established female rapper, and this song wS the first rap song to reach number 1 on the charts...Blonde. they were so versitile.
Good reactions guys👍🏼🎼🤚👍🏼🎼🤚!!!

You two look like you're having a lot of fun doing this.
This was one of the earliest songs where a female raps. Another one from the same year was "Square Biz" by Teena Marie.
When she starts Rapping she mentions “Fab 5 Freddy” who is an American visual artist, filmmaker, and hip hop pioneer. Also “Flash” (Grandmaster Flash) Fab Five Freddy told me everybody's fly
Dj spinnin' I said, "My My"
Flash is fast, Flash is cool
François c'est pas, Flash ain't no dude ... yes back in the day as 1980 song ... Blondie first big artist to have mainstream Rap song in charts
She was THE first rapper. This video came out a year before the Sugar hill gang did rappers delight on Soul Train.
U2 can groove. I watch just to see you dance bob and weave.. it's kool.. Back in my day they had dance shows where kids such like yourselves would just hit the dance floor. Dance Fever is the name of the 1st dance show check that and react!!!!!!!!!! Like 50 kids from all types of people.. 'Dancin On Air' is the one I watched, it's from back home (Philly)
You are watching the genesis of the mainstreaming of rap and hip hop. Blondie are cool, Debbie is ahead of the curve, here she is predicting the future and bringing it to a predominantly white MTV world. its not rap like we know it now but it helps moves the genre from niche. God damn, Jean-Michel Basquiat in the video!!! - one of the most influential artists of the last century.
Actually this came out years before rap emerged as a genre so she was WAY ahead of her time. It was only when rap started that people realized 'didn't Blondie rap in Rapture back in 1981?'
Please One Way Or Another
That was ‘79-‘80 & a lot of music critics credit her w/ creating the very 1st rap song to go worldwide !!!!!
If you want more Blondie to react to, the song that came up at the end of the video, "Dreaming," is great!
Rapture was ground breaking. It was the first #1 song on the Billboard charts that had Rap in it.
Great to see
To be fair, Blondie was the first to have a #1 hit with a rap in it back in '81. She probably wasn't the first female rapper, but was the 1st with a #1. But honestly, Debbie Harry might have been the first female rapper....at least to record anything. I'm sure there were females on the block spitting out hip hop rhymes but they didn't get into the studio until later.
Yes absolutely... Blondie was one of the ground breaking women of rap... And white.
