Becoming debt free was anticlimactic for me.

  • I dreamed and dreamed about the day I would become debt free with all zeroes across the board. Then it happened, and it felt nothing like I thought it would. Turns out I had romanticized the idea of debt freedom so much that I had forgotten I was still alive in the process!

My mind set was and is entirely different. I didn't want to worry about a thing. No more paycheck to paycheck, no more worries about paying my taxes. So when I paid off all my debt and saved and invested my money, I've been able to achieve financial nirvana. When my ride broke down it was my parents who told me, "Son you work to long and too hard to buy used" I borrowed from and paid myself back . My Grandparents, my parents and now I've achieved financial nirvana. Love it.

Balance. This I’ve learned. I’ve worked myself out of consumer debt, got back in it, felt guilty, changed my budget to fit all the gurus I watch and failed. It was until I finally learned to take “pieces” and make my own formula FOR ME!! What will provide me peace and balance? Knowing yourself and being honest with yourself about what “your values” are is what truly has changed me. You have said it before, “personal finance is personal for a reason” it is yours. If you are reaping the benefits, not just the monetary ones, the intangibles like peace of mind, happiness, do that! Modify as you need but remember BALANCE and GRACE❤️
Loved your transparency!! Always do, keep being YOU!!

Kids grow up fast but I wouldn’t ever regret getting out of debt and doing what it took to do so. That gives your kids a better future and you are able to contribute to their college accounts. The time was going to fly by anyway- getting out of debt was actually a good thing.

I have been having similar thoughts. After talking to different people, watching different videos and listening to my kids, I realised I have no balance in my life.
So I have decided to save and pay off debt at the same time so that I can enjoy my money and not postpone my life for the never never.

Yup this is why I refuse/d to work a second job to pay off debt. I didn’t wanna become a workhorse like my late mother. I was always asking her to spend time with me..😢time is precious, especially when your kids are small. One day they’re going to leave the nest😫

Being someone that lost a parent and a sibling to soon and unexpectedly, it taught me tomorrow is not promised to any of us.
It's one of the reasons why I'm not a fan of a popular financial influencer touting the "beans and rice" mentality. I'm not saying YOLO 24/7 because as most of us have learned some part of the journey is going to take sacrifice. But the journey isn't all sacrifice. It's about learning the lessons and hopefully achieving those goals but not at the same time being a detriment to yourself and those around you.
Time is so expensive and precious and we don't get it back.
As you constantly live in the future the present becomes the past.
I'm constantly trying to check myself to live in this moment and really try to live in today as the gift that it is.

It’s so difficult to stay on the present which is so weird! I agree, after losing a loved one suddenly I ache for the time she didn’t get with her babies. Strive for more but smell roses along the way I say!

Girl this video hit hard! Ben living in the scarcity mind set bc there we years where it was scarce. I finally accomplished my goal with my career and it was anticlimactic and I feel lost. I don't have the joy, relief, etc that I thought it would bring me and I lost so much time with my children as well try to give them a life I envisioned. So now I'm on a fast with my husband until Friday just praying for direction because I can't afford to lose more time with my kids ... and my career doesn't spark joy it's just a means to an end.

I was lucky I guess. My mom was on the career/education loop. My dad was obsessed with his work. I remember one year my brother had gotten in trouble with the law at 15. The judge told my mom she needed to be home to supervise him. She was angry beyond recognition because she had plans that summer to be in school full time for her doctorate in education. My dad was a lost cause and could care less, he would do what he wanted. The next summer and the one after my brother worked with my dad every day. No monkey business, just work.
I learned that balance is everything. If I became a parent I would learn from yesterday, live for today and prepare for tomorrow. I had to remind myself over and over, but I did it.

I had thoughts along similar lines this year. I was watching another “frugal” video and as I read the comments I thought: “Wow! People have gone from keeping up with the “JONESES” to keeping up with the “BONESES” (living bare bones).
It’s become an ego badge of honor to say: “I don’t own a tv”, “I don’t own a washing machine”, “We dont buy anything new”…
And many creators are applauded for EXTREME frugality.
I stopped watching those videos because a lot of it is just the other side of the coin of tying your worth to your things. One is saying: I am better than you because I have - and the other is saying I am better than you because I don’t have.
And nature shows us that ANYTHING in excess isn’t good for you. A healthy organism is always seeking balance.
    Nice job on this!

Self reflection is good as long as you don’t get stuck too heavily in the guilt. One thing that helped me is to keep a calendar and beside it a list with free, low cost and higher cost events, activities and fun things to do.
I will probably sound OCD. I keep a calendar of events for Christmas. Several years there were fun activities and required activities I forgot to do.😢. So, I kept a calendar from year to year and planned things we would do each day, lol, even a rest day. After that we did everything we wanted and missed nothing. It lightened the stress of the season. The calendar was very flexible accept a few dates (Christmas is always the 25th). At different times of the year, I kept a loose calendar. It was fun to look back and remember throughout the year.
The thing to remember is it’s not to late until you die to try.

So I prayed to stop thinking about debt and just be ❤ I was not thinking about the most important things. So I stop to live!! And when I prayed to let it go....I did and it is taking care of itself!!! MY FAMILY IS MOST IMPORTANT ❤😊 Especially my Sun he deserves all of me!! This was a great video, thanks for sharing, Dyana. Getting off of social media has felt like a burden was lifted so I could focus on the present and what mattered… my daughter & her schoolwork and activities and just things I wanted to do for ME. I learned to trade, learned how to swim and tread water, and even took on a new role at work. If I do ever decide to get back on IG or FB, I will be quick to drop it if it ever feels like I’m not focused on being present. Also, when it comes to financial goals, I too have made sacrifices to get to where I wanted to be financially, but I didn’t feel like I had to suffer in the process. I always felt like I was doing or not doing certain things to one day achieve financial freedom and not have to rely on each paycheck but could save and invest more and have time to focus more on what matters. Enjoyed this video 💕

"Struggle shows up as relatability" - that's the piece of my story that I had to work to get rid of...I had to start refusing to shine a light on my struggle (lest it beget more struggle) just so others (deep in the struggle) could like me too simply because we were in this struggle together. Now, I don't mind sharing my struggle when the struggle is real...but I had to stop reaching for the struggle just to feel real. Being soooo abundant is the new struggle (ie...I have so many vacation options that 365 days in a year is not enough time to fit them all in - whew, the struggle - lol).

It's hard to for someone in debt to listen to someone debt free complaining about being debt free. Children admire character in their parents. If they see their parents working hard, it motivates them to work hard to be able to one day provide a better life for themselves and their parents and it teaches them the importance of living a debt free existence. It's not cheap to furnish a household, pay bills, or raise kids. Your children will grow up to make you proud and if your children are respectful, appreciative, have good manners in public settings, do well in school and grow up to be productive human beings, then you have done a great job as a parent. Stop putting yourself down because you sacrifice years of your life to provide a better future for yourself and your children.
