I retired at 62 with only $600k saved up, and looking back, I see some things I might've done differently. I didn’t really focus on saving and contributing enough or paying off my house early, which might’ve made retirement a bit easier, especially with inflation eating into my nest-egg. Not saying it’s the only way to do things, but it’s something I think about

    • @AlexMorgan-ti6nv

I'm approaching retirement and having a financial advisor has been helpful. I started investing later than most, so relying on compound interest from index funds or bonds alone wasn’t enough for me. Despite that, I’ve managed to do well and am on track to retire with around $5 million

    • @GLADIATOR-tz7yt

I'm worried about my retirement portfolio and could use some guidance. How can I get in touch with your advisor?

    • @AlexMorgan-ti6nv

I usually avoid making specific recommendations because everyone's situation is unique. However, my experience with Emily Ava Milligan has been quite positive. You might find it worthwhile to see if her approach fits your needs

When the time comes and we make that final payment, there are very few people in our circle who we will tell. You would think that family members would be happy for you and not jealous! We paid off our first home in just over 12 years. We then purchased a second home for a family member and paid it off in 7.5 years. Recently we gave another family member a portion of our land and now have family next door! You only need to be a conscious consumer with precise goals to save for the dreams. Our house payment is only 10% of our take home income and staying debt free allows us to put away 50% of our earnings. We don’t do vacations or new electronics we buy used cars paying cash and just stay frugal. We always pay $100-200 extra and now my husband finally got the raise we’re going to be able to have the house paid off in just short of three years minus needing to save 100k to fix up my grandparents house when the time comes to buy it so that’s just a side thing.

I am happy for you :)
I live in Europe and I am stunned by Americans and their weird obsession with owning huge houses. I constantly hear that a 70-square-meter house is considered tiny in the USA. In many European countries, people are raising families in 70, 60, or even 50 -square-meter houses/flats, and not because they are broke. Taking up a mortgage on a smaller house will be paid off sooner. I never understood the big house mania. I think this contributes a lot to having ppl struggling with their finances. Many who buy a huge house end up not even using it plus I think they buy it for others, to show off, and if that is the case we are dealing with a serious value system issue. I can't imagine living for others. Also if someone looks up to someone just because that person owns (..well actually the bank owns...) a huge house I am not sure how good that friend is. The same goes to cars, here in Europe we don't change the cars every 5 yrs and we are perfectly fine with buying a used car if that is in perfect condition.

My therapist recommends against FB as she says it's "shallow relationships screaming at you like a two year old throwing a tantrum." It served a purpose at first, connecting to family, but FB contributed to my stagnation after a significant life event. Family that wants to stay in touch now uses my phone number to text. I have the birthdays of those with whom I am close, and send them real birthday cards every year. The cards keep me busy and are much more real than a meme posted on FB.

I deactivated Facebook in December, hadn’t missed it, my mental was much better. I still have IG and TikTok but those don’t take nearly as much time as Facebook did. I reactivated yesterday for my birthday…I scrolled for a few minutes here and there and literally just deactivated a few moments ago.

I paid off the last $100,000.00 in January in 3 years. Thats $33,000.00 a year. I did it alone on $85,000.00 gross per year. My household bills were pared down to only $1200.00 per month during pay off. Now I pay the land taxes myself so the monthly bills are $1500.00 total. I now have lots of sinking funds, an emergency fund and investments.

Our primary goal is currently in process... Build our home without taking out a loan! My husband is doing all the work himself, so we're saving a lot.
Second goal is to build passive income with our rental property and add more in the future.

I’m so torn between expediting my mortgage payoff and catch up on my retirement/investments from a late start. In the event of an emergency, I can liquidate and payoff the mortgage balance if i absolutely had to with no other choice, but why would I if I don’t need to and sacrifice that compounding return?

Congratulations! If we had stayed in our house up North, it would have been paid off. My husband wanted to retire down South, then we got into the 2008 financial mess, he passed away 6 years ago and I'm stuck with a huge mortgage now. At my age, I still want to make a dent in that mortgage. I refinanced 2 years ago and now I feel I can't move and trade in my 3.9 mortgage for an 7% one. But, the more I pay, the more that's left to my Granddaughters, so I'm trying my best.

Maybe think about 1) renting that house and rent a smaller place or a room to live in, 2) getting a paying roommate to help pay off that mortgage. Responsible renters appreciate a safe place to live.

@@lunallena5594 Thank you for the tips. I live in a tourist area and HOA neighborhood. My son and granddaughter live with me, so all of the rooms are full. HOA prohibits renting in this section for less than a year. Last time I saw renters in my neighborhood, the Sheriff showed up to get them out. But, I'm not giving up.😁

Congratulations.I’m paying extra principal each month towards my mortgage. I will have it paid off in next four years (total time to pay off mortgage will be 7 years) I have a fully paid off rental property so this passive income is helping me pay off this mortgage. Im doing it as a single person.I’m working part time as a nurse after 41 years. I’m also enjoying my time freedom and am very intentional with my very hard earned money.
