      Hey Carlos many thanks for the kind words and I'm glad you found this how-to video helpful! An anchor float really can make all the difference when fishing for halibut. Being able to quickly and easily pull the anchor and move spots without pulling your back out is a huge advantage! I'd love to hear how it goes for you! Tight lines right back at you my friend! @CaptainZac Where did you buy the mechanism on the ball float that has the locking pin? Or what should I be googling to find something similar?

    • @CaptainZac
      @CaptainZac  Місяць тому

      Hi @tysonbreuer I bought this in person at the Outdoor Emporium (Sportco) near Seattle. sportco.com/. You might try searching for self-locking anchor float or anchor buoy system. Tight lines! Captain Zac

    I like using a windless with a bow roller

    • @CaptainZac

      Hi Henry thanks for watching and I'm glad you enjoyed this video! Yes indeed - a windless and bow roller is a nice feature. Most larger boats have these but those that don't should definitely consider an anchor float system. Tight lines my friend! Captain Zac

    Awesome video, what’s the metal fitting that the rope goes threw called? Thanks

    • @CaptainZac
      @CaptainZac  3 роки тому

      Hi Kyle thanks for watching and I'm glad you found this anchor float video helpful! Good question - the metal fitting on the boat is a "cleat" but I believe you are referring to the metal fitting that slides up and down the anchor line. I'm not sure this has a formal name but it is basically a metal fitting that always allow the rope to flow one direction (upwards towards the boat) and has a sliding locking-pin that only allows the rope to flow the other direction (towards the bottom) when you use your finger pull back the pin. Thus, when dropping the anchor down, you pull back the pin and let the rope flow freely. When picking the anchor up, the pin is not pulled back thus will not allow the anchor to travel back to the bottom (then the anchor is on top floating right below the surface!). All the best and tight lines my friend! Captain Zac

    I’m about to try anchoring for halibut for the first time off Victoria BC. This was a good tutorial! Question: is it reasonably safe to tie off to your bow cleat, or better to use a bow to stern line with an extra floating line going to the anchor buoy?

    • @CaptainZac
      @CaptainZac  2 роки тому +1

      Hi Larry thanks for stopping by and I'm glad you found this tutorial helpful! Good question - both are fine options. I run the anchor line right to my bow cleat while others have a clip on the bow line that they attach to the anchor line (with another floating line to the anchor ball). When you tie off the anchor line right to the bow cleat, just be sure to use a rope protector since the swinging / movement of the boat can cause wear and tear on the rope. Good luck and tight lines my friend! Captain Zac

    Great video as always. What size (weight) Danforth/fluke anchor are you using? Are you happy with it for your Hewes or have you changed to another type since you made the video?

    • @CaptainZac
      @CaptainZac  2 роки тому

      Hi Jamie - thanks for watching and I'm glad you enjoyed this anchor float video! I'm using a 13lb fluke anchor and in most applications it works great. Every so often, in heavy currents/tides, the anchor has trouble holding. Sometimes just letting more anchor line out can solve the problem - I've got 500' on board. Up here in Alaska we get some very extreme tides, which in some place create "tide rips" that are nearly impossible to anchor in. Other techniques such as backtrolling (instead of anchoring) can work in these situations - or finding a spot that has less intense currents. Overall, I am pleased with this anchor and would recommend it. Are you looking into getting a boat? Tight lines my friend! Captain Zac

      @@CaptainZac Thanks for the info! I have a 2020 210 Sea Runner as well. I use it mostly in the interior of BC but plan to take it out to the coast this year. Your videos are great and show how much more the boat is capable of.

      @@CaptainZac Love it! After looking at a lot of other options I am glad I went with the Hewescraft. Was on the water over 100 days last year. Need to get it baptized in some salt water and try and catch something other than fresh water fish.

    Captain Zac what type of rope and the thickness of the rope you use

    • @CaptainZac
      @CaptainZac  3 роки тому

      Hi again Carlos - I use 500 feet of 3/8 inch nylon anchor rope, with about 10 feet of chain at the end connected to the anchor.
