I remember when that album came out... Everyone thought the band was done after Rev's tragedy, but then they announced a new final album, then confirmed the former drummer from Dream Theatre for it, everyone went insane, because the song Nightmare came out before the album, and everyone was happy and sad. It was something else, hard to explain
The Rev took quite a bit of inspiration from Portnoy, so it was great for him to play with the band. There’s a live drum cam vid of Portnoy playing “Almost Easy” with them.
The legendary Mike Portnoy of Dream Theater finished out the songs on the album that the rev started. The rev often said that Mike Portnoy was one of his biggest influences as a drummer, it was very special that the legend came out in his honor to do the first tour as the drummer for avenged sevenfold after the rev's passing. There are quite a few good videos from that tour, there is even a nice drum cam video of portnoy doing nightmare live on that tour.
It was harder to find a good live performance of "Nightmare" then I imagined, think "Avenged Sevenfold - Nightmare (Download Fest 2011)" is a good one that you will like" 🤘
The reason this song doesn't have a good performance is because it's honestly a weaker song. This was probably the first A7x song I ever learned on guitar. After learning MUCH more of their catalogue I never go back to play this one because, frankly, it's boring. This song heavily relies on the production and the sound rather than the arrangement/composition. The vocals are mainly on the root, thirds and fifths, meaning they MUST be in tune- little room for error. When they perform it they definitely exceed that error margin. The way they layer the vocals also demands that matt share the vocals with someone else. For some reason they chose Johnny, even though he doesn't intonate his shouts... he just kinda shouts. It doesn't sound nearly as good because he doesn't have the skill or training matt does. The strength of this song is it's infectious power in the vocal verses and the crowd engagement done live. Not a bad song, but certainly overrated even in their catalogue. Also, great find on the performance! I didn't think there was a decent one out there for Nightmare.
@@Naturalvelocity I’m not any music expert but I felt the exact same thing! This song depends quite a lot on the vocals, and unless there are some studio singers on choruses, I don’t thing it’s great with only Syn and Zack (plus Johnny screaming lmao) Plus if I’m not wrong there’s a third rhythm guitar recorded that’s not there live, and it’s also felt, Johnny has to carry with it alone with the bass
First time I saw this band live was in 2010, and they opened with this one. As much as I wish I could have watched them live before Jimmy died, I have to admit it was awesome to see them play live with Mike Portnoy on the skins as he is a drumming legend. If you hear of them running through Germany, don't pass it up. You won't be disappointed with them live.
You should definitely check out "The River" by Good Charlotte. M. Shadows is featured in it and his voice performance in this song is amazing. If you love his voice, this song is a MUST to listen to. 😎
This song was originally the first track for a concept album that was being written for the Nightmare album. This song in its entirety was co-written with The REV and is one of the few songs on the Nightmare album where the lyrics were not changed after The Rev passed away. The music video pays homage to Jacob's Ladder
@aeua no he didn’t write this song for a wedding he wrote this song for this album and this song was never rewritten everything else on the album was just a little bit to fit the theme of the album nightmare because it’s about death
Just a heads up this is obviously dedicated to The Rev. And a lot of the visuals in this video are tied to the video of Afterlife, which Jimmy wrote. There were spiders on his drum kit, while in the Afterlife video he has spiders crawling on him. Also Zacky is dancing with a skeleton here, when he dances with a girl in Afterlife. Love the reactions!
also the rev suffered from enlarged heart desiase so he wouldn't be able to live past 30-35 years anyway. He was in a lot of pain during the last years and he wrote a song about it called "brompton cocktail" which is a very good song if you wanna check it out
Quick fact about the music video: one of The Rev's favourite horror movies was 'Jacob's Ladder' and the video is designed to look like a famous scene from that movie where the protagonist is being wheeled through a hospital and is seeing scary and creepy things everywhere. I actually went to see the band on the Nightmare tour, and seeing them live on that tour was a very powerful experience. Mike Portnoy from Dream Theater stepped in on Drums for them. It's great to see someone reacting to this stuff and to know so many people still love it.
FYI Also The song is based and dedicated to there former drummer James "The Rev" Sullivan who died in 2009 while the album Nightmare was being preformed in the studio. The visuals in the video is that there in a Nightmare about losing The Rev, the guy on the stretcher in restraints is the lead singer M. Shadows, the guy on the floor with the red hair is the rhythm guitarist and background vocals Zacky Vengeance, the guy banging his head against the glass is lead guitarist and background vocals Synyster Gates, the guy crawling on the metal fence is the bass guitarist and background vocals Johnny Christ, the only one you don't see the drummer hence the drums at the end with the bright white light shinning on the drums at the end of the video.
Not really, this song was roughly 80-90% done before the rev died, there's a nightmare demo on yt with the rev doing backup vocals. This song, danger line and lost it all (originally going to be in this album, there's also a demo of it) were the only songs that are not related to the rev.
Hey, Biss! One fun thing I can say about this song is when I saw this band live, it had the LOUDEST audience-participation part I've ever heard. (You know the part. Heh) Rock on, Biss! 🤘😎👍
Still cant wrap my head around how well Mike Portnoy adapted to a7x's overall style. Feels 100% aligned with their old classics, but at most with a little bit of extra sauce
Great reaction 👏 i knew you would love this song. Mike Portnoy filled in to complete the album with the band. He did a short set of tours and they got a different drummer. He was never going to be a permanent member because he was in Dream Theater. React to the stage please 🙏
Hey, Biscute A little insight on this video: Rev wrote the drum track for this song, he'd died before he was able to record the track, so when the band had recorded the drum parts, they'd recruited Mike Portnoy from "Dream Theater" to play the drum tracks rev had written They'd offered to have mike appear in the video for the performance scenes, but he'd declined feeling it was too soon after rev's passing The video itself had depictions from previous A7X videos and the hospital setting was inspired by rev's favorite movie, "Jacobs's Ladder"
For me the best live version of Nightmare is Live in Download Festival 2014. Their performance and sound quality are on point at that show. Another great one was their show at Auburn Hills Palace in 2011, but there’s no pro shot video for that one, audio only.

The album Nightmare including this song Nightmare. Portnoy was part of this album he was the replacement after Jimmy passed away, Jimmy has a great influence to Mike Portnoy of Dream Theater. RIP to THE REV🦇❤
The drummer for this album is Mike Portnoy of Dream Theater. The rev Loved his drumming. Mike Portnoy had just parted ways with Dream Theater when Avenged Sevenfold asked him to record the album based on the revs demo recordings he had previously laid down.
As others pointed... The Rev wrote the drums beforehand in a demo that you can find on UA-cam.. He may have written the song too.. I can't remember 10 years ago.. and yes.. I've seen Avenged Sevenfold around 10 times and Nightmare is always an amazing song to hear live! Also when are you gonna check out Bring me the Horizon? 🤘🖤
The Rev arranged the drums for most of, if not all of the songs on this album including this one. This album was recorded with Mike Portnoy on the drums.
When I first ever seen this video back in 2010 after REV passed watching this video I kinda had an idea of the meaning of this video a psych ward the lyrics it made sense to me and the end of the video I lost it when I seen the drums and the white/gold background 💔😭 foREVer ❤️🙏🏻 I’ll always miss you Jimmy aka REV ps IF U NEED HELP PLEASE SEEK IT I’m glad I got the help I needed love y’all stay safe ❤️🙌🏻🙏🏻✝️
Yeah the tattoo at the beginning is The Rev version of the Deathbat they started using after his passing. I'd have gotten that one too if I didn't already have a tattoo of the original Deathbat.
You must know the fact, I loved with this fucking band from junior high school till now. I dont know why when I bored with days, or happy I'm always play A7x from many albums and single
i saw the guitarists' dad in Iowa he was opening for a Jeff Dunham act. its clear where this guy learned his guitar...his father was playing the star spangled banner with the guitar behind his back, it was unbelievable and perfectly played.
I've always heard "..and I know you hear their voices. 'Come in from the cold.' They took for granted, your soul. Now it's our soul to steal." I heard that as you heard the voices telling you to stop doing this to yourself, but those voices weren't constant or pushy enough, because your soul was so easily stolen. It's interesting that @Bisscute heard it so differently. I haven't looked up the meaning of this song, but I assumed it was someone who was in hell and it was from the perspective of the demons haunting someone.
Will you react to M.I.A. by Avenged Sevenfold? I don't want to spoil anything, but it is an absolutely fantastic song with a very important message that's worth listening to. :)
As everyone pointed mike portnoy did the drums for rev on this album..the band asked portnoy if he could do this album cuz portnoy was one of the drummers jimmy idolized and patterned his own style after, and portnoy had just left his own band dream theatre that same year so his schedule was wide open...the only reason that portnoy didnt stay on permanently is because he is one of those drummers that could very easily over shadow the band and easily become aX7 With mike portnoy! Lol.. its like if lars ulrich or a legendary status drummer joined ur band..it just became a thing where mikes very large shadow could dim the light of the rest of the members...so mike pretty much came in and helped save the nightmare album on short notice, did the tour cycle with them and stayed until they found a drummer who could "blend in" more subtly.. the rev was a "franchise" drummer in his own right, but portnoy coming in just wasnt fair to the other guy imo lol..he a drummer who is used to ALOT more control, and is a self professed "control freak", he did all the merch, setlists, wrote all the lyrics for dream theatre and and was used to being the leader of a band with a capital L n thsts just not what avenged was looking for longterm. If u look up portnoys work u DT u will see what im talking about.. dance of eternity, panic attaxk, honor thy father, metropolos p 1 n 2.. the guys drumming is insane n u can also see where the rev took alot of his inspiration from..like singing backup vocals, drummers rarely do that but portnoy did it all the fucking time....
This song equals what slipknot did for Paul gray with the song the "The Devil in I" meaning this was a tribute to the Rev and also them dealing with it. There is probably somewhere online still the interview floating where Matt explains the whole meaning of the song
Aerosmith amazing kickass band my first concert too.with dokken 1987 sweet emotion won't disappoint.hey miss biss you totally rock from all biss nation.🥁👌😁
I'm sure someone's commented this already, but nightmare came out a couple of years after Live in the LBC came out Also, you should react to Atreyu, Bullet for My Valentine, Sleeping With Sirens, All That Remains, Killswitch Engage, I Prevail, A Day to Remember, blessthefall, Fall Out Boy :)
Just ignore everyone else suggestions on which live performence to watch and check out Nightmare live at Pinkpop 2014 🙂 they always perform well, but this version actually has a good mix so you'll hear all instruments, and Matt of course 🙂 in basically all other live shows from that era (wchich are mostly festivals) you either cant hear Matt, Syn or Johnny (or all of them)
This isn’t a song about addiction it’s about going to hell this song was written by The Rev so the film clip is a tribute to him, the last song on the album was also written by The Rev as well
The concept of this song has already done before the REV past away.but nightmare recorded after REV die collaborate with mike portnoy (ex drummer of DT)

Song is about going to hell. Plain and simple
The drummer was Mike Portnoy he used to play for Dream Theater he is one of the drummers Jimmy The Rev Sullivan idolized
Both were best drummers
Rev idiolise Mike Portnoy.
It’s crazy cool that A7X got drummers that The Rev idolized to fill the spot after him. Aside from Ilejay.
it was 2010
Yes but most of the drums on this album wa written by the rev. Portnoy jusr recorded the tracks and Do a few fills where necessary
When Matt starts to sing, the joy that can be read on your face is priceless. I think it's safe to say you really like this band.

U gatta do save me next
Next Bat Country (official video)
The Stage
I'm sure someone's commented this already, but nightmare came out a couple of years after Live in the LBC came out
Also, you should react to Atreyu, Bullet for My Valentine, Sleeping With Sirens, All That Remains, Killswitch Engage, I Prevail, A Day to Remember, blessthefall, Fall Out Boy :)
Just ignore everyone else suggestions on which live performence to watch and check out Nightmare live at Pinkpop 2014 🙂 they always perform well, but this version actually has a good mix so you'll hear all instruments, and Matt of course 🙂 in basically all other live shows from that era (wchich are mostly festivals) you either cant hear Matt, Syn or Johnny (or all of them)
If you like this one and have not listened to it yet I would love to see your reaction to 3 Days grace - Animal I have become it a good one
React to "the stage" song by Avenged Sevenfold than has a guitar solo very nice... PLEASE!!!
I like your video!!
on drums was there Mike Portnoy, ex drummer of Dream Theater.
it was 2010
This isn’t a song about addiction it’s about going to hell this song was written by The Rev so the film clip is a tribute to him, the last song on the album was also written by The Rev as well
The concept of this song has already done before the REV past away.but nightmare recorded after REV die collaborate with mike portnoy (ex drummer of DT)
