Oh my god! You're the best. I have wasted a lot of time around the web listing to so-called professional singers giving tips, but with your exercises and explanations I can start feeling my Vibrato more relaxed and consistent, my tongue relaxing perfectly out of the way, my posture and attitude much better, even my voice!.. I don't know if 'thank you' is actually enough 😛
Thank you so much Victoria, I am very much on the poor end of the spectrum and theres no way i can afford proper vocal training, and even when i have had "proper" vocal training in the past when I wanted to study music and they certainly didn't know their shit like you do and it was honestly a waste of money. The guitar teachers were incredible, but the vocal tutor didnt know (or wasn't willing to share) anything properly, she had a huge ego. So I am eternally grateful that you share your knowledge without hiding behind a horrendous pay wall that only the rich can afford to cross over. So as you can imagine i have spent a lot of time searching the internet for help, but you are the only true professional I've ever come across who can explain things so easily. I've watched your videos for a while now. From the bottom of my soul thank you so much, and I hope someday I will be able to repay you for your kindness ❤
wow this really helped me !! i have chronic pain and tension affecting my ability to sing and speak and i never realized the tongue could have such a an impact. thank you!
Omg I just watched this video and your jaw tension video and tried the exercises and I am in literal tears! I have been struggling with tension for years, limiting my singing abilities. With just a few minutes of these exercises, I could tell a big difference in my sound, quality, clarity and tone of voice! Thank you so much!! I will continue to use these tips to become a better singer! 🎤 👏🏽 New subscriber! ❤
I didn't even notice I had a tight tongue until you mentioned it! Even though I grew up singing, I feel like I've been singing wrong this whole time and are learning from scratch. lol
I found your lesson this past week, and in four days of explaining tension in different parts of the singing apparatus. You have changed my life. Thank you.❤
as always, so thankful for your videos! i realized that i've been compensating/overusing my jaw because i wasn't able to isolate my tongue. just that little bit of exercise, my voice opened up so much, it had more ring and a lot more volume (which wasn't even something i was intentionally trying to work on)!
Thank you, Victoria!! The root of my tongue is very tight causing tension in the neck. I can fully resonate with your message. I will try those exercises! My voice does sound strangled.
After watching your videos, I unsubscribed to of almost all the other UA-cam channels. This is a God send! You should author a book on vocal pedagogy if you have not already. Your videos bring to life Richard Miller's 'The Structure of Singing System and Art in Vocal Technique'.
Thank you for your generous compliments! I appreciate it! I do not have the energy to write a book, but I do have an audio program that is nearing completion.
Your channel should have more viewers! You are the best vocal teacher who has a channel that I've discovered on UA-cam so far. Thanks for everything! PS: If you, dear Madam, are reading this: I'm wondering if it is detrimental to becoming a great singer when one has a tongue-tie. I have a pretty severe tongue-tie. It doesn't prevent me from resting the tongue at the palate when nose-breathing (in everyday life, not while singing), but I just wonder if you think that it's something that makes it harder for me to "get the tongue out of the way" when singing. So far, I don't have the greatest issues, but I DO tensen up quite easily in the throat, neck and shoulders area when singing. Do you think it could have anything to do with that. Do you have any experience with that condition? Thank you for your reply, if you find the time. Sincerely, Christina
Hi, Christina. Thank you for your lovely note. Please feel free to share my channel with your singer friends. As far as your tongue-tie question, sorry, but I don't have any experience with this. There is plenty of info online, including how it affects or does not affect singing. Sorry that I cannot give you anything specific.
I literally love you so much! These exercises have helped tremendously (and instantly) to help release tension w my singing! This video was also very informative and definitely made me realize how important the tongue muscle is in singing and how it was affecting it. Thank you sm again and take care Victoria! 💚💚
I used to flatten my tongue. Since I watched this video, I started using your exercises and now it's so much better. I am retracting my tongue on the high notes. More like moving the tip of the tongue from a flat default rating right behind the bottom teeth to the frenulum (retracting??). It's still buoyant. I still mind the embouchure. My high notes are the most effortless they've ever been. My "o" and "u" are also more resonant. Is this a "bad singing habit" ?
I am really grateful for you making this video. You have no idea how long I have had this struggle and not knowing the root cause of my issue. I have been taking open throat lessons for 8-9 years and this is the first time ive experienced an open throat sensation. My tone was AWESOME and POWERFUL and most important of all it was EFFORTLESS💪🏼 Now I need to build muscle memory for this cause ive built in a lot of bad habits. Care to help ?🙂
Having a hard time separating my jaw and tongue. Even with the slow yah yah. It really is unruly! Maybe that's why I can't whistle and roll my r's. 🤣 Ultra beginner here. It also feels like I am shouting
Do these exercises work for tongue retraction? I have noticed recently that I have been retracting my tongue to stabilize my larynx, especially when holding a high note. Now when I try to bring the tongue forward my larynx also jumps up because it doesn't know how to stay down without the tongues support.
hi Victoria, been going through your videos again and don't know how I missed this one.i believe the tongue and jaw is my biggest issue, so I am going to really work on these exercises. make notes from your video and try and apply. I am sure this is why I also have a tired voice most of the time. I have been told I have a tied tongue and maybe having it cut possibly could improve the openness and positioning the tongue. I have been on a few of you zooms but I feel ham coming on with the same problems every time. I haven't found anyone else as good as you Victoria you're certainly the top vocal coach and you are so passionate to help singers of all levels. thank you . look forward to Joing you again on a zoom and so pleased I signed up for your Healthy Vocal Technique program, it so helpful. I made a comment on one your other video about a better vibrato, yesterday, about how I could feel the very back of my tongue moving up and down and if that was a real and health vibrato (doin it health is more imperfect than doin it at all for me, I just want to do it so bad lol) I started noticing the pulse (for lack of a better word) about a week or 2 after I started doing the "yayayayaya" exercise with my tongue on my bottom lip and holding my chin so it wouldn't move. That's the same feeling only not nearly as drastic and farther down in my throat...and yes I kept up with your "yayayayas" in the video without moving my jaw 😉 lol. I was actually kinda proud of that it showed my progress that I didnt notice before lol Thank you for making your videos easy to watch and packed full of information. ❤
Hi Victoria, when doing the first exercise (singing while moving the tongue forward/backwards, the underside of my tongue (under my chin) protrudes slightly when the tongue is forward, is this normal?
Hi Victoria! It looks like on "ya-ya-ya-ya-ya", your tip of your tongue is behind the back of your bottom teeth? Am I seeing this correctly, or how should we be doing it? I find it hard to sing "ya-ya-ya-ya-ya" with my tongue tip against the back of my bottom teeth.
Yes, that's right. That is your "home base" on all vowels, or on the gum slightly below. I discuss that in other videos. See my playlist on Tongue Tension While Singing.
How about many rock singers that sung with their tongue out its tip raised? Is it for the better or what does it do then? Because they do sound good though
My lower teeth are to close to allow my tongue to rest between them. If I relax my tongue it covers the lower teeth and also the anterior teeth. With a little of tension I keep the tongue at the base of the mouth but then it close my pharynx a little bit. I’m sure I’m not the only one with a relative small jaw. Not a micrognathia. What can I do? Thank you for share your wisdom and experience in singing
A good guide is to feel where your tongue is when you are at rest. The tip rests behind the bottom front teeth OR on the gum slightly below it, and there is a natural tongue arch.
Thanks very good content, as well as her other vid worth checking out. I tried this but struggled with that part that she (and you hear many other good coaches say) mentioned about placing the "tip of the tongue behind teeth". My singing was still in tune though, hearing the recording, no one would notice but me because my problem is how it felt- Idk how to describe that feeling-- it feels like it's not my normal, I have that feeling that I'm talking while gargling water or as if there's a food in the tip of my mouth while I am talking, or as if I'm trying to imitate Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's "Hasta La Vista Baby" accent. That how it felt. Is that tongue behind teeth a universal rule in singing or depends on which your native dialect?
The general rule is that the tip of the tongue touches the inside of your bottom front teeth or on the gum slightly below it. I say "general" because there are stylistic differences and probably dialectical. Just feel where your tongue is when you are at rest. It naturally rests in the bed of your mouth with the tip behind your bottom front teeth. If you sound like Arnold Schwarzenegger's "Hasta La Vista Baby", you are probably pressing your tongue down which is never good for singing.
Hello Victoria! I have a question that has been on my mind for a while: when saying "ee" or "eh", does the larynx come up very slightly? When I use my tongue to make these vowels and keep my jaw relaxed (with no sound), I can feel my larynx lift very slightly. I don't feel any tongue or throat tension, though. I'm curious if this is just an anatomical thing and something I shouldn't stress about too much. Thank you!
This is very common. My answer: it depends on what kind of sound you want. No, it should not automatically come up, but at the same time, it should float and not be pressed down with the tongue. Work on stability. Watch my video on the EE vowel: EE Vowel Singing - TIGHT, SPREAD OR MUFFLED? ua-cam.com/video/19JbzQP8bEE/v-deo.html
Hey Victoria! I tried these tongue exercises I still feel my tongue is getting pushed down into my throat sounding like a frog. I feel I do this even on the inhalation which causes me to get my abs so tight that my support is just ruined. Sometimes I do get it right for some odd reason and then my tongue is relaxed and my abs is relaxed and I am good to go. What is my problem my tongue or my inhalation? :(

Oh, sorry, but I cannot answer your question without seeing and hearing you.
I can,t do that fast. Will i be able to do that fast.If i start from slower yah yah
Sure, start more slowly and then increase speed as your tongue frees up.
After doing the exercise for maybe five minutes my throat started to feel sore. Any tips for avoiding that?
Without seeing and hearing you, I am going to assume that your tongue is very tight and perhaps you are forcing it down in the exercise. I have a lot of other videos and exercises that may work better for you. You can find them in my playlist on the tight throat. @@Victoria-Victorious Ok, thank you! I really appreciate your videos, I will definitely check those other ones out! Do you have an tips/videos on tension in the soft palate? I have a lot of discomfort in that area when I sing.
Hi I like you’re video’s but stil not wiser of it. I can’t sing at al and don’t even know what my voice is where it is and how I can produce clear sounds.
Start with my Beginner's Playlist.

I cannot do the "yah" with the tongue 😅, the only thing I can do is "lah". Anyone else with this issue?
Fairly common. It just means that the middle and back of your tongue is a bit tight. 😊
@@Victoria-Victorious thank you for responding! How can I fix that?
I have other videos on this in my playlist on Tongue Tension while Singing. Slow down the exercises. Freeing up your tongue will free up your singing voice!
@@Victoria-Victorious thank you so much!
