What is not mentioned is that the artisanal fishermen in Somalia had their fishing waters decimated by European, Chinese and Japanese fishing fleets that left them unable to survive. That is still happening in whatever African fishing waters that still exist.

The problem is that during this whole documentary he never pointed out the main problem which led/leads these pirates to do things like this in the first place -- which is corruption and instability started and funded by the Western colonies themselves. Actually he even ignored it, when the pirate himself pointed it out. Had they focused instead their investments on such countries to help them get back on their feet, there wouldn't be corruption of this level. That'd be the least they could do after colonizing and robbing these people.

Absolutely. Bernard Monnet is beyond courageous. These people are clearly not to be trifled with in any way. What's more, most African bandits and African soldiers and warriors in general (the difference is often non-existent) often are under the effects of various narcotics before going into battle, often with the approval of their leaders (many of whom even provide the narcotics to their own men in order to give them courage in a fire-fight).

Good documentary. Enlightened me to the never ending exploitation of the African continent. With Nigerias natural resources, there shouldn’t be the level of rural abject poverty. The Nigerian government permits this operation and that is the root cause for the huge divide in wealth vs poverty in that country. The big oil companies are despicable.

The tone he's using and some of the type of questions he asks could get him into trouble. Very unhinged folks he's interviewing (in reference to the Pirate leaders) and at times he seems to get too comfortable, but at the same time I have to commend him for his bravery, and his slight abrasive style of conducting such interviews, and the documentary is very informative and depicts the reality or the fate faced by many African countries.

There is one student in that lecture room who should be taken on the next trip. He is awed by the findings. This is amazing reporting and then connecting it back to class, amazing. I felt like I was in class, learning about my people.

I really enjoyed this documentary and i applaud you for taking all this years to complete it.
There are a few things that disturbed me though. The first one is labelling terror by religion. Nigerian pirates (militia) who control the narrow lakes, had crosses on their necks, a religious symbol, but i didn't hear you call them out by religion but when it came to somalia, you called them the 'Islamic'' militia (who control south of the country).
The second thing is that you tend to mention the impact of this piracy on the world's economy yet you interviewed Civilians, militants and tribal chiefs / leaders who view this activity non beneficial to their local economies and lives...and they also gave you reason why they do or support them ...yet there isn't an interview on your video where you question leaders or CEO's of this large companies.
It is apparent that this large companies do not benefit the local economies of this regions in any way so rather than talking about how piracy threatens the global economy, (something you strongly emphasised )...maybe focusing more on the cause,the the driving force, the negligence, the capitalism, the lack of jobs in this localities by this large corporations would have shed some light on how natives and governments of this rich oil countries are being exploited by the west.
On that oil Boat,160 expatriates work on board, On the guard boat,the commander is french , the captain is mexican (who mentions how high paying the job is...and that's why he is still there) the safety of all the expatriates is guarded by the Nigerian naval Forces (20..under a french man's command.). This is an example the disparity i am talking about.
..from watching this video, i cannot think or get convinced that tribal chiefs, militants and even the government is weak & corrupt as you imply...the government has no option ...this is Neo colonialism and by very powerful entities (whose business is protected by the UN and EU..and their powerful naval forces...) ..this is exploitation and economic discrimination and that the biggest problem that i think we should investigate first.
Definitely agree with you. I believe it is a lack of power the Nigerian government and people have against the huge oil companies and the western nations that protect and facilitate them which is the root cause of militias, corruption and poverty. Africa is the wealthiest continent in the world regarding natural resources - but why are most nations in Africa so poor? I think this documentary is just one of numerous examples of the modern day colonialism and exploitation taking place. Basically Western nations and companies stealing the wealth away from the people who have the right to it.
Western nations have the power to dictate who leads nations such as Nigeria and other African nations which then give them the power to change laws which facilitate exploitative companies using the nation as a HUGE cash grab. This then breeds corruption, which then breeds poverty, which then leads people to a life of crime (e.g these militia pirate groups) and the cycle continues. Its really disturbing how much of this actually goes on in Africa, and looking into it - its completely blatant and obvious but the broken system is so ingrained into these poor nations, it makes it almost impossible to escape it.
I would highly recommend a video by the Caspian Report titled "France secretly owns 14 countries". It is just another example of neo colonialism, with an unbiased view towards the daylight robbery happening in all too many African countries.
