    I think most GW players could benefit from spending six months or so playing X-Wing or Legion intensively to get used to the idea of ‘do what it says on the card, do not do what it does not say on the card’. That mindset makes so many apparently indecipherable interactions simple.

      As someone who played FFG games almost exclusively for several years, including lots of competitive Xwing and Imperial Assault (second place in Nationals in the former, National Champion in the latter)... Just 'doing what it says on the card' sure _seems_ simple.
      I remember, for example, that in IA it eventually turned out that, in the nitty gritty of the rules, there is a huge mechanical difference between 'moving two spaces' and 'gaining two movement points' in regards to action limits, out-of-sequence actions and interrupts. Fine, that's not exactly elegant, but okay, I guess there could be a use for that sort of distinction.
      Only problem was, appearently no one on the design team bothered with understanding the distinction in their own game and just used either wording at random on various cards, whether it worked or made sense or not...

      Coming from Warmachine I am surprised how in GW games bending the rules at random places is expected and gentlemanly, while playing according to the rules (and with neat measurements) makes you a rules lawyer 0o

    For the Stand and Fire ploy I assumed "ignore all special rules that weapon has" was enough to get rid of all the keywords, but yeah I guess MW and Px technically count as "critical hit rules" rather than "special rules". Either way I only tended to use that ploy on stealth suits because burst cannons have six attacks.

    The point you raise in the 2d vs 3d section, specifically about a model on a VP needing to be within 1" of the edge, is the rule I most often see getting confused still in KT. I think it might deserve its own new video?
    I think it would also be good to clarify why this is a none issue if facing a vantage point edge that does not have a wall. Seems a little counter intuitive that the vantage point floor doesnt itself count as heavy cover (even if the operative standing on it cannot benefit). Maybe it would be good to show how this works on the big Moroch base terrain piece also to exhibit how hard it should be to pop up the back of it and take a shot at something on the other side of it.
    Hope that makes sense!

      @@GlassHalfDead I don’t know where to respond or comment on podcasts, so I’ll do this right here:
      I have to Agree with you, that I felt a little disconnected from the game. I consumed all the KT content out there. But then I picked up a few models for the Warp Coven team and suddenly list building was awesome again!! What bothers me is that you usually “take all the specialists” and that’s it.
      I feel like they’re slowly picking up the pace though. Wyrmblade offers the choice of specialists and legionnaires actually have more choices than you can field, plus choices of marks. So im really looking forward to what’s to come and where they go with it.

    Thanks for the great video, I actually learned a lot.
    But I got a bit of lost at the 3Dvs2D point when the camera moved from left to right to left. I was not sure anymore who is shooting who at the end.
    If the commando standing in the middle of the vantage point, both have line of sight (2D), right? The orc does only has cover if he is in 2" of the vertical cover. There isn't something like a horizontal cover of the floor (3D) which whis would mean the commando could conceal himself in the middle of the plattform.

    • @GlassHalfDead

    Psychic Action + Free Action questions:
    Warp Coven, Pirates and Legionaries have Psychic Actions that chooses options, such as "Shooting Actions as a Free action using the profile below". Based on everything in the rules, I assume that I can't use the Psychic action to shoot a Lightning Bolt, then use my Shoot action to shoot a Shuriken Pistol? Nor use Life Siphon and Fireball in the same turn. Even when using a ploy or equipment that allows you to use Psychic Actions more than once.
    Likewise, a Doombolt can't be used in Overwatch, since Doombolt isn't a shooting weapon?

    • @GlassHalfDead
      @GlassHalfDead  2 роки тому +2

      That's right, you will have already used a shoot action and can't do that twice.
      The psychic action there is essentially just temporarily giving you a weapon that you can shoot with.
      Likewise overwatch specifically says perform a shoot action, so you can't perform a psychic action first.

    They need to fix the mwx deal with stand and fire. The mortal wounds should just become standard wounds added to the crit, otherwise your crits are usually the same damage as a standard. Besides being able to cancel other crits.

    16:19 LethalX is specifically in the section of the Datacards called "Special Rules", so it shouldn't apply with that Tactical Ploy? The APx and MW2 already wouldn't apply, since they only apply to shooting attacks?

    I know you’re just using it for the thought experiment, but in the last scenario you gave, T’au using the Stand and Fire ploy with a rail rifle, the ploy says to “Ignore Special Rules the weapon has,” so the issue with the Mortal Wounds wouldn’t apply to begin with?

    • @GlassHalfDead
      @GlassHalfDead  2 роки тому +1

      Special rules in this case are the Lethal 5+ and AP1. The MWx is a critical hit rule. The way it works is discussed in the Compendium Designer's Commentary here: www.warhammer-community.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/hJ51bJHjCztOiS5h.pdf

  • @OurCognitiveSurplus
    @OurCognitiveSurplus 2 роки тому +2

    If you only generate AP at the start of your activation, does that mean a comms boy cannot use Listen In outside of its activation (because it doesn’t have the 1AP it costs)?
    If so, why does the similar Nob rule say “each time this operative is activated” while the comms boy doesn’t?

    • @GlassHalfDead
      @GlassHalfDead  2 роки тому +1

      You are correct that three Comms must be activated to use his ability.
      The Nob's rule works slightly differently and it stipulates when it must be used because it's not an action that can be used when you want (actions are defined in the core rules, abilities are unique and need to tell you exactly when and how to use them)

    • @konsi88
      @konsi88 2 роки тому +2

      Thats right, "Listen In" is an action that costs 1 AP during the Comm Boy´s activation. "Get it Dun!" on the other Hand is a "free" ability your "LEADER" Character can use once it is activated. Since both are actions of your operatives you need them to be activated first to use them.

    • @OurCognitiveSurplus
      @OurCognitiveSurplus 2 роки тому

      @@konsi88 Thanks both. I found it confusing that both rules have the same practical effect but one explicit and one implicit about “during activation”. Strange choices by the drafters at GW, why not just write both rules the same and tweak only the text that is intended to be different.

    One rule I get stuck on is movement through terrain/operatives: "It cannot move ... through any part of another operative’s base ... An operative cannot move through terrain features". But what counts as moving through? any part of the model or base? just the base? or just the line of movement, with the only restriction on the base being that you must finish the move in a location it can be placed? For example, if there are two traversable terrain features next to each other with a 30mm gap between them, would an operative on a 40mm base need to traverse or could it move through the 30mm gap?

  • @OurCognitiveSurplus
    @OurCognitiveSurplus 2 роки тому +1

    Is it true that a necron or plague marine can’t climb to a vantage point (octarius terrain) with a move action alone?

    • @GlassHalfDead
      @GlassHalfDead  2 роки тому +1

      That's correct as all of the octarius terrain is 3" high which requires 2 circle to climb so they must move and dash.

    • @konsi88
      @konsi88 2 роки тому +1

      Since it costs 2Circle movement to climb the octarius terrain it would use up all the (necorn) operatives movement just to clear the vertical way. So you would need a dash to finish. Another possiblility would be the use of the strategic ploy "IMPLACABLE MARCH" when not in conceal.

    • @OurCognitiveSurplus
      @OurCognitiveSurplus 2 роки тому +1

      @@GlassHalfDead Do you / others tend to play the doors and hatches in Octarius with the rules from Chalnath (as in, they open)? If so, does climbing up the hatch count as scalable? (Or is the only scalable terrain the ladder to the oil rig)?
      Appreciate that can all be done by agreement at the start of the game with friends. But would be keen to get a vibe of how folk tend to do that in a tournament / at a FLGS.

    In case of 3d vs 2d, I think that keeping game 3d, but treating cover lines as of unlimited height both up and down would clear up such interactions… btw, we have only information that lines are 1mm wide, we know nothing about their height, so it might be even as intended.
    This way wall below still is obscuring for operative above, but battlements on the floor still can provide cover (and based on vantage point description, they were intended to provide it).
    (edit: although it might leave some strange interactions with overghangs...
    edit 2: imagining cover line as of height stretching between planes on which both models are located would be even better)

    On #2, not quite. Even rules that tell you to "do " are limited by performing actions once per activation. Free actions, "do actions," all are limited. The "do action" vs. "perform action" is not intentional, and is just lazy and imprecise GW writing, and I'm not sure where you got the impression it was significant.
