An Iconic Concrete House Inspired by Sculpture (House Tour)

- Located in Caulfield on the outskirts of inner Melbourne, Gottlieb House is an iconic concrete house with a unique design that makes an important contribution to Australian architecture. Wood Marsh Architecture designed the house in 1989 for a family who placed full trust in the architects to create a three- to four-bedroom house that would not give anything away from the street.
Taking this brief in hand, the award-winning architects created an iconic concrete house with a design inspired by the art and sculpture of North American modernist artists Richard Serra and Donald Judd. Looking to the themes of these artists’ work, the architects treated the volumes of the house as separate components and created a sense of consistency between inside and out using a limited palette of concrete with a cement render, glass and stainless steel. With no guttering, the front of the house has been left to patina, creating some interesting visual effects on the concrete exterior.
The staircase foyer in the Melbourne house is a cylinder-like form that is lit from above via a circular skylight. A glazed sculptural spine splits the building and allows shafts of light to enter the interiors. The bedrooms are contained in boxes that are lowered into the ceiling of the living room below, which gives the impression of a double height space in other areas.
The clients asked Wood Marsh Architecture to also design all the furniture for the home and requested a large enough space to entertain a party of 300 people. The furniture is as unique as the house itself and adds to the sculptural aesthetic of the building.
The resulting design by these award-winning architects is an iconic concrete house that adds to the repertoire of Australian architecture.
Gottlieb House by Wood Marsh Architecture also features across 24 pages in Issue No. 5 of The Local Project's print publication - thelocalproject.com.au/public...

Absolutely sublime architecture. This is what they try to teach you about space, volume, light and shadow. It’s overbearing and light at the same time. What an outstanding piece of design. 1989 and it’s still as good now - style doesn’t go out of fashion. Imagine having the guts to do this
Well, the story of modern architecture began in the beginning of XX century. The similar forms and shapes you will find in soviet constructivism/german bauhaus architecture that was born over 100 years ago.
Sorry but they wouldn’t be able to do shit without the concreters. These guys wouldn’t even know how to order concrete
I did a small job on this house and I was so taken away how the space has been created in this house. It is something else and one of my favourite buildings in Melbourne.
What did you do? 😮
this channel gives architectural digest a real run for its money! the editing, production value and overall vibe are just phenomenal!
architectural digest is a waste of time. they focus on unattainable luxury spaces that have no taste or interesting qualities what so ever, and showing celebrity houses like anyone gives two fucks about where the live
@@dimitrijedjurdjevic838 I agree with you. AD focus mostly about price and celebrities. They not really put much value in design. But maybe what they try to represent are just not my taste. It’s really a personal opinion.
But I really like their Troye Sivan’s episode which is in Melbourne.
@@c.w.1574 i suppose that some may find what AD covers appealing. but it seems like they don’t really care about daring or fascinating architecture as much as they care about just having *1238 million dollar house* in the title
@@dimitrijedjurdjevic838 AD has a series called unique spaces and you can see them in between the expensive house tours but they don't get as much views.
Who tf watch architectural digest anyways
There are glimpses of beauty within this Brutalist structure.
reminds me of something Tadao Ando would design or build...
Did you find any?
@@Charliechorizo Yes. Very much so.
This gives me the feels of a BUNKER! Love the concrete finishes
the editing on these videos is just soo good.
I both like and fear the client-family. Equal parts. This is a masterpiece.
Piece of art, but can't imagine myself wandering to the kitchen for a cup of milk, in the night, in underpants :)
hahahah same
Why not?
@@olivierl2172 don't have suitable underpants :)
@@olena8089 you're not wearing versace?
Very warm and homely
This house is a piece of art. Love the complexity and design
it looks like a vampire family's residence! so gorgeous
it does look bold and harsh w/ all the concrete-steel-glass
+ the video editor put some dark eerie background music makes it like a vampire house
I can see the Cullens could live here
I'm so curious about the thumbnail that's why I click to watch. And wow
It will be like living in a modern art museum. Absolutely stunning visually, spiritually, and intellectually.
This is truly something special! A rare gem. I love that it doesn't take the form of a typical residential layout. It's intriguing and mysterious.
I don't know which is more beautiful... the Architecture. Or how he poetically expresses about the Architecture.
Timeless considering it was built in 1989
Damn 1989??
One of my favourites so far. Would have liked to have seen more.
One of the most beautiful homes I’ve seen
the glass wrapping of the concrete is brilliant
Imagination at work. Awesome.
That place would turn me into a supervillain, if I already wasn't one.
Same thought. Sitting behind a desk with a black cat in my lap, and I hate cats.
I love this house; And I can totally see house a WWII era client would want it built. I was in desert Storm, and I still feel I need to live in a house like this. One ALWAYS makes enemies in war
I can completely see why this house is architecturally important, its design and unconventional layout are very unique, intriguing noteworthy and important. I like how light and shadow work in the house and the way space is used and the visual experience you get as you look around and move through the house. Yet I find myself torn by it. I do like it but at the same time I feel it has all the charm of a post modern office building from the 60's, everything is hard surfaces but nothing that balances that out in some way. There's no warmth in it, nothing that seems comfortable or relaxing, it's extremely formal more like a museum than a home. And perhaps thats the intent and thats fine, it is their home. That said, would I want to live there...
So no one is talking about that beautiful voice of artitecture
as beautiful as it is, I could never live in a concrete house, it just takes me and reminds me of parking lots.
This kind of content is so inspiring and so good for critical thinking. Thank you.
I will definitely spread the word about you to my friends and colleagues.
This is perfectly capturing the atmosphere of an abandoned house at its best, the thing so many people love
A very intriguing material palette and surface textures. Superb design!
I remember coming across this place on my feed a few years back and now I get to see it in a tour. Honestly breathtaking and love the balance of elements in the space.
Absolutely love the ALL the houses featured in this channel. Just gorgeous and amazing.
I love the highly articulate, master craftsmanship, undemocratic and fine art aspect of the home and design.
Awesome! Soundtrack puts a cherry on top
man this house is interesting. it has a vibe of an villains hideout, but a sense of comfort as well. and the play of light and different surfaces and textures, as well as the ever changing feeling of space will never become boring
A piece of art...really amazing 👏
Beautiful in every way. And I rarely give compliments like that.
Absolutely beautiful!
This is a monumental piece of Art and Architecture. Gave me goosebumps
WOW. That’s the dream house. And quality formed concrete build!
creative as hell, but also timeless. I'd love to see more of their work.
Beautiful architecture. I really like the poured concrete and the stacked stone over the textured concrete personally Gorgeous!
This house is another level....pure beauty!!!
I absolutely love all yalls home !!
UK: Love. love this house!!!! It would also be interesting to see the family in their environment. Unique & fabulous house
It makes me feel really different. It comes from an other world. Piece of art absolutely.
GooooOoorgeous!!! One of the most incredible building and interior and exterior, all together, I've ever seen!!! People, who created that, are geniuses!!!
The video production quality is really at a new level.
Love the house with a veritable mix of concrete, glass, and steel thrown in for good measure.

Thank you!
I absolutely love concrete homes! Dream House
Exceptional home - I love it - but certainly only for a select group of people....
Elegance. Simple. Perfect.
Absolutely beautiful
WOW! Exceptional
Amazing architecture
Fantastic! ❤
FIrst project on the channel I watched from beginning to end. Impressive. And the architect isn't annoying.
I love it!
stunning
It’s like an art gallery or museum. Something you visit to gather inspiration and to take you away from the norm , but not something I would want to live in day in and day out. I saw Troy Savan’s Melbourne house now that’s something I could live in.
Absolutely love the project...
It’s somehow brutal and light at the same time
I always look forward to TLP video profiles of the best designed homes. Please make them daily!
Glad you like them!
So inspirational I really do hope it still stands
The music makes it so creepy lol. Outstanding piece. A favorite for the use of concrete.
Amazing...so futuristic for when it was built...yet still it continues to be!! That's timeless Architecture 👏👌.
Only thing wrt current times is the sharp sngled partitions and slate stone cladding...pose a risk.
Perfect space 👌
Love this
The more I revisit this video the more ways I find to appreciate it. My dream home fr
Cheers to the video editing team
Прекрасно!!побольше таких домов
I love this house color and combination.silent type
Makes me want to have a concrete home. 😍
tell me you are a villain without telling me you are a villain
"That's really cool"... said aloud to myself at various points throughout.
So unique wow
very nice. wow. but more sculpture than home.
Wonderful structure
Amazing showcase as always
Glad you enjoyed Lex!
This channel is good. really good
Jesus. It’s so beautiful
Cool house.....cool furniture.
Glad you think so Michel!
the editing goes crazy
Very good
I like it
Such a unique body of work from Wood Marsh
one of my dream homes
Sculptural, drama, brutalist…. Just an amazing house….sooooo international.
this is the type of architecture I signed up for...
If my friend invited me to his house as a teen and I walked into this i'm pretty sure I would have walked around with my back against the wall at all times, such a brutal structure that no doubt divides opinion.
All you need is a japanese lady ghost.
Haaha😂😂
Dude .....
Lmao
.
Hahahhahahahhahahahah
I think this home invokes extreme views 😂 like it or hate it, and nothing in between... but I may be wrong... I don’t know whether to like it or love it. Kudos to the architect... that’s what good architecture does, right?
Nice music as well👍
Glad you like it Ani!
Holy moly what a channel, instant sub
Thanks Jaimi! 🙌
The choice of music was for this house fit perfectly with the design aesthetic! It felt like I was touring Batman’s home
Bravo
Would have to visit it in person before having an opinion-hard to judge a place from a video.
I am interested in owners who build this house they are for sure thinking about of box. I love it
I love-hate this so much, particularly the concrete textures but it's an absolutely insane piece of work in a good way.
Appreciate both the architects vision and the clients 'personal' choice. Personally I would find it hard for this to be interpreted has a 'Home'.
I absolutely love this channel and have started binging a bunch of your videos. The storytelling and visuals are just perfect. However, because of this, the dialogue audio seems to stand out as something that could be improved. It sounds like the noise gate/reduction is a little too strong so each distinct spoken phrase begins and ends abruptly/unnaturally. It also seems like reverb was added to the spoken parts to make it sound natural, but it sounds like it's a little much as well. In any case, these videos are still soo good. Thanks for all the work that's been put into them!
I wanna live my movie villain fantasy in this house.
