聖地巡礼 is a common practice amongst anime fans in Japan and in East Asia in general for proximity reasons. Of course, it is financially based, because if you don't have money, it would be quite hard to do. However, it is less well-known to fans in NA and Europe as trips to Japan has a higher financial and logistical barrier. As someone who started watching anime by watching Detective Conan, and I still watch this anime today, the whole idea of realism and grounded depiction is closely tied with the word anime. In fact, DC shaped me so much that I can't even watch a lot of anime out there because they are high fantasy or just fantasy. This series even has tourism episodes every year sponsored by the JR to go around different part of Japan to showcase local sights and history. Unlike in NA and the English-speaking world more generally, Detective Conan is huge in Japan and Asia, also popular in Europe and the Arabic and Spanish-speaking world to a lesser extend. I think this demonstrates that anime was always dualistic, with the most fantastical and the most realistic co-existing. Even after watching Shinkai's full portfolio, I still don't find his works to be my cup of tea. Strip away the aesthetics, and I am aware of the fact that anime in Japanese is short for animation, without which the foundation of our discussion would be missing, his narratives never shine through. For me, narratives are infinitely more important than the art and animation. He falls into the same category as Mamoru Hosoda, where I will watch the film to know what everyone else is talking about, but not out of interest or enjoyment.
Yeah I read a ton about 聖地巡礼 while researching this video. The pilgrimage idea has barely spread to NA, but I want to change that! The financial barrier is definitely a big factor. I've never watched any Detective Conan but that is really interesting to hear, thanks for writing this up. Yeah Shinkai's narratives are all very similar so if you don't connect to one you'll most likely struggle to connect with any. Mamoru Hosod is a good comparison.

We think about visiting those stairs...!!! THANKS FOR DIGGING UP THE HISTORY OF SHINKAI!!!! I was waiting to get some time to search about that. But you just delivered it to the doorstep!!!! :) :)
I donno how but Makoto Shinki just gets teenagers so right in his movies. I donno if it's teenagers as a whole or if it's only us gen Z who relate to his movies so much even tho they are science fictions. Because I have tried to make my parents and multiple other older friends to watch his movies but they didn't seem to enjoy em as much for some reason. But when I watch a Makoto Shinki movie and see the protagonist do something super stupid, I am never like "Brooo, that's so stupid..". More usually I can relate to those stupidity like "Damn, that's stupid but I would have totally done the same probably." The good thing is that the protagonist in his movies aren't super humans or saints, every single time, the protagonists are shown to be super average humans with very average struggles accedentally finding themselves in a not so average mess and then they struggle and work really hard to get out of the mess.
I totally agree! Especially in weathering with you, hodaka makes the choice to destroy the entire city just to bring hina back, very few movies would have the protagonist make a decision like that, but it’s one many of us might choose in his shoes.
That is also my dream to live there for a while, it's really intimidating, but I think as long as you put yourself out there you should be able to make friends in your Japanese lessons, and out at bars! Start learning the language asap :)
It's supposed to be out in 2022! Yes I'm assuming you've seen Your Name and Weathering With you? I think you should check out 5cm Per Second, and Garden of Words!
Nice video. Thanks! I love Shinkai san's work; I think he should be thought of in the same sphere as Gabriel García Márquez. He's a master of magical realism. He shows us the human experience by superimposing beautiful hyperrealism with the unexplainable forces in our lives, like love.
One of the best thing about Anime is their use of real locations, compare to Western animation, the background and cities are usually generic and unrecognizable. Not an entirely bad thing, but it's also not interesting since the backgrounds themselves don't look interesting.
can't not agree with this xD, makoto shinkai was one of the greatest mangaka in my eyes, except for the parts he gave me crippling depression for weeks by some of his works
When i was at class 12 (or third year of high school) i got recommendation to watch 5cm/s. I don't like anime before, i just watch some Ghibli and thats it just like other genre of film. But after that film i know very well this is masterpiece. I know this director really make "something". I search on internet and watch his movie from She and Her Cat to Garden of Words. 5 cm/s in other hand was still my favorite (after that moment i watch Your Name, Weathering with You and Suzume). I don't know i feel that it was so deep, some sadness and loneliness that i can't describe. I watch it over and over again (at least 10 times from start to finish entirely and perhaps double if you count i only watch some parts of it) and i buy 5cm/manga (LN in my language was already sold and that publisher already bankrupt, in my language it was very very hard to find that).
Personally I find his films beautiful to look at but the storytelling is somewhat hollow. It always seems like an afterthought and comes across as a bit sappy. I don't think your point at the end of the video is true, as there are many lower-budget films that are shot on location and do provide snapshots of the world. It was strange to me that you chose to show Sonic and Godzilla which are obviously mostly CGI. It's because lower-budget films exist that I think Shinkai's visuals are a bit overrated and anime as a medium is better used to show the incredible and wonderous mixed with reality, as studios such as Ghibli and Chizu do. In a way, the popularity of Shinkai's work reminds me of video games, where visuals sadly prove to be a more popular aspect than gameplay.
"accurate anime" has no future as it can and will be so easily replaced by AI. In fact, we are at the point where our phones can convert any video to accurate anime ... which is just another way of saying "accurate video."
I don't think Shinkai changed anime at all. If we call it "change", we have to go back to three periods, which are the 60s, 80s-2000s and 2000-2010s. These three periods all had some anime that drastically changed the techniques or themes in the anime industry, and it was never just focused on one name, even Hayao. If you mean "inspire", write "inspire", I don't think the word "change" should be used. Currently, Shinkai is the most commercially successful anime director because he has changed his storytelling style to better suit the trends and tastes. Even in 2016 with "Your Name", there are still some other movies like "A Silent Voice" or especially "Kono Sekai no (Sara ni Ikutsumono) Katasumi ni" that are much better. I personally regret that "Kono Sekai no (Sara ni Ikutsumono) Katasumi ni" is not known to many people. Again, I don't think Shinkai "changed" anything. What I like about Shinkai is that his movies are SO BEAUTIFUL.The scenes in the movie are drawn in detail, especially the landscapes. As for the other aspects, I find it quite normal.

Thanku
I’m a sophomore right now and I’m really thinking about going to Japan for a while after I graduate but I’m scared I’m just gonna be alone
That is also my dream to live there for a while, it's really intimidating, but I think as long as you put yourself out there you should be able to make friends in your Japanese lessons, and out at bars! Start learning the language asap :)
Dude i have the same dream
When is his next movie coming up ??
Can you recommend me some of his movies please 🙏🥺
It's supposed to be out in 2022! Yes I'm assuming you've seen Your Name and Weathering With you? I think you should check out 5cm Per Second, and Garden of Words!
@@KindaNeet yeah...I have seen your name, weathering with you !!
Remember my Name
Allan Manalo I'll next generation famous anime/manga writer someday you too sir keep up your channel
Hell yeah! Good luck my dude
Shinkai films is ground breaking for an anime studio like pa works an anime studio that is know for photo realistick anime
Absolutely!
More like narrowing the scope of movie making in anime industry forever. His movies are basically rehashed version of his previous movies.
Don't forget the realism of san harsh no lion.
I haven’t actually watched that one yet!
find a piece of your vedio in a English study app, THX for your introduction.
Oh interesting, what app?
@@KindaNeet sorry sir, I don’t know whether there is another version of this app besides the Chinese-English version. It names “欧陆词典”
Nice video.
Totally agree!
I AM FROM INDIA, WHAT DO YOU FEEL ABOUT INDIAN ANIME LOVERS,WILL ANIME EVER POPULAR IN INDIA?????🙂
I’ve got a ton of viewers from India, I always love hearin from you guys! So cool that anime is enjoyed all around the world ✌🏻
can't not agree with this xD, makoto shinkai was one of the greatest mangaka in my eyes, except for the parts he gave me crippling depression for weeks by some of his works
Yeah watching his films is both the most fun and most depressing thing you can do
i should join this discord server tbh
Bro Jesus bless you
Bruh you're videos are not good
Cuz they're very good
.
....
.
You are very underrated
I hope you reach 1M in no time
No!!! Actually you will!!!!
Haha you really had me going there for a second, thanks mate!
The movie would be better if the hero was Kazuma from Konosuba.
That’d be a weird alternate dimension
😍
Wouldn't that mean it is the future? Why wouldn't companies use that?
Jesus loves you.
This video was sorta neet!
