Within two minutes, I had my hand over my heart. FINALLY. Somebody gets it. You wouldn't believe how many haters haven't been able to notice any of these motifs. The red cord in particular is so crucial and so overlooked by Western audiences. I will recommend this video and reference it in my own analysis. Beautiful.

The red cord though, and this movie's theme in general, is a well worn, easily recognized motif/imagery in literature and visual arts.

@@stonecat676 Oui. You are correct. I just feel that the love is not of the two and of musubi pulling the strings.(There is barely interaction between the two. They exchange a few sentences a day. They know each other's voices and their personality, but not together. It is an infatuation at best)

  • @AnthonyKagegari
    @AnthonyKagegari 3 роки тому +136

The only part I concluded differently is the ending part. The reason they don’t remember each other is more to do with Japanese folklore and Musubi as well. Remember to leave the underworld you must give what is most important to you. Taki went back to the shrine and drank the kuchikamisake and took back the offering of half of Mitsuha’s soul. In doing so he had to offer up what was most important to him to leave the underworld. Taki’s memories of Mitsuha. The same applies to her. She fell in love with Taki before she died and to return to the world after Taki returned her soul to her she offered up what was most important to her. Mitsuha’s memories of Taki. If Taki had written his name on her hand it would of disappeared as well because of Musubi, but he wrote I love you instead, which in Japanese folklore is protected by Tsukiyomi and couldn’t be touched by Musubi. Their happy ending plays on the motif that even though the mind cannot remember, the heart always will. Which comes full circle in the idea that the red thread of fate will always connect people no matter the circumstances, time, or place.
Other than that you perfectly incapsulated the ideas and themes of this movie. Thank you for sharing!

Thank you so much! You articulated the thoughts that went through my head while watching this masterpiece. I am new to anime and Japanese folklore but still really spoke to me as the imagery of fate and threads resembled the Fates (moires) in ancient greek mythology, and the journey to the underworld was very relatable to the myth of Orpheus and Euridice…though Orpheus, impatient as he was, he couldn’t in the end make the requested sacrifice and save Euridice…Taki did ❤️

At the end, I thought you would mention how their reunion is surrounded by red lines crossing each other, the barriers of the stairs are the same red as the ribbon ; there's a shot of the barrier cutting the screen in two, just like the scene when they meet at twilight. Then as he asks if they know each other, the red line of the barrier looks like when Mitsuha threw her ribbon to him, except now it's Taki reaching out to Mitsuha by asking the question, who are you/do I know you?
Your analysis was excellent, I really appreciated the visual connexions you made between shots, and it was very instructive. I feel like I'll be getting better at noticing that kind of visual story-telling now that you've taught me everything!

That's such a cool observation! I did not realize that at all, despite it seeming so deliberate now in hindsight.
Even if I did notice it though, it probably wouldn't have helped my thesis since I argued the circles were the true connection motif, rather than the lines. Still love your thought though, thanks for sharing!

@@patrickkimessays Well, my favorite part of your analysis was how you explained the true meaning of lines, connexions, and how it morphs into this circle that is fate and life so... Anime are not just works to be seen, but instead they must be analyzed to grasp their meanings, to open our mindswith new cultures and make us better person . This is so wonderful, I really have no words. I am trying to write a Fanfiction because as a writer I feel that there is so much potential that is yet to be explored. The lives and patterns in the protagonist's lives have a lot more to show and even in the lives of their near ones, perception is something that can be used to structure the narrative and I AM OBSESSED WITH KIMI NO NA WA. The patterns and symbolic meaning of these "moments" and the philosophy behind them are somewhat painful and peaceful at the same time. The significance of these shapes and how they affect the timeline is really wonderful. In some ways, this movie is a test of how much philosophy and beauty one can understand. Some people have taken this movie way to casually, skipping all the culture, deeper meanings and signs that are sprayed throughout the movie, this is what basically makes the movie If you notice there is some exceptional storytelling that uses silence to tell a lot of the story that is present, the highlighted parts of each frame is only the tip of the iceberg. But there are many that have understood this film, they may not like it but they have understood. This makes the film pretty much impossible to hate, the joy of finding these hidden drops of wisdom and foreshadowing is sublime, it doesn't matter what each one believes in but at least you will be proud that you were able to read in between the lines and the warmth that hits your heart when you realize is of magnitude that is off the charts. It's basically a two-hour-long audio-visual poem and boy is it one of the greatest pieces of cinematography this world has ever witnessed. Shinkai is an absolute legend, I look up to him now.
Thank for reading this abnormally long comment, but this movie means a lot more to me than to most people that I have met. Wonderful work thanks again.

the storytelling, interpretation and understanding of symbolism for this movie by you is quite amazing, and much needed to be truly understood, though much focus on symbolism.. and I think Taki and Mitsuha's story are a success story of the cycle of unending attempts of connection... not only by chance, but by attemps of each other trying to reach out for another in order to connect...
there is an attempt to explain why Taki and Mitsuha's memories lost on another video, but even though it's like a cycle, I still stand by the Red Thread of destiny, the way Taki and Mitsuha always tries to connect because of they swapping bodies, has earned them a lifetime of connection, though blur and unclear... that's why the end, when they see each other, the connection was again found, like connecting a cut wire back to it's place...

What a video to be posted as your first on this channel. I did always wonder why there has to be a point in the title. Especially the circle in the original Japanese title. And this video flashes out these ideas about the meaning of just a circle. I can't quite describe how amazing this video is. With thoughts, I did never really have but make a whole lot of sense when spelt out loud.
    Just amazing.
Ps. Interestingly, this popped up in my recommendations a day or two ago but it's already 2 years old. A shame it didn't gather the attention it deserves.

I just watched it for the first time and I just want to say thanks for this analysis, I feel a bit stupid for not making some of these connections watching it but it makes a lot of sense. Not to take anything away from the beautiful story, message or soundtrack but I was completely blown away by the visuals which were the best I have yet to see in an animated movie.

Watching this video was like experiencing the movie again for the first time. That curiosity, then dread, then resolution feeling. Amazing video and interpretation. The way the visuals and music complement your narration. But... I kinda hoped you'd let the whole Yumetourou play at the end of the vid.

I wanted to add an interpretation of the film myself
all of the actions and adventure they had, will eventually feel like a dream (like Mitsuha's grandma said),which interpret our youthful lives, 90% of us will forget that when we grow up,
The connection won't get lost, but we forgot with whom we enjoyed it with
It's a sad feeling when you dont know who is it with, but when that connection is meant to be together again, tears of sadness becomes tears of joy

Thank you for this analysis. It took my quite a while to decide to watch an analysis of Your Name, since I made a pact with myself. I had a very strong and unique connection with a girl (talking about a sort of telepathy even). But as it often happens in life, we had to go our separate ways, yet I still feel connected. I've told myself that if I am ever to watch the full movie, it would be with this girl only. No matter how many years it may take, or if ever.

Thank you! Unfortunately it's so difficult to make this anything more than just a hobby, being in school all year. I absolutely have a lot of ideas I'd love to write about, but there is no way right now that I could set a schedule for completing scripts and editing videos.
I love doing it though, so there are definitely plans for other, separate video essays.

Something I noticed when watching this movie to contextualize the sound track for my essay, is how the movie uses string instruments to punctuate moments of human connection between two people.

A masterpiece of analytical writing. However, I'm not sure the climax view is worth 15,000 lives if the tragedy is avoidable. In the movie, Taki saved the town. In reality, which the movie is based on, 15,000 people will never return to their lives again. That's why that climax view, to me, can never be beautiful. In fact, it is a tragedy that can never be forgotten. It is that climax view that needs to be removed from an ordinary day. So this movie could be based on something else better.
