Makoto Shinkai should never be compared to Miyazaki. Miyazaki makes the ethereal everyday whereas Shinkai makes the everyday ethereal.

I feel like calling Shinkai "the New Miyazaki" does him a great disservice. Both directors are phenomenal in their own unique and interesting ways.
He did mention that himself in the video, though ! He is simply saying how Shinkai is replacing Miyazaki as the new face of anime.

Nkanyiso Innocent Khwane I don't know why anyone takes the Oscars seriously anymore. Sure the movies that get nominated, and particularly the ones that win, are good movies, but I could tell you that just as easily as the Oscars could. That is assuming that you like "Oscar movies" (which most of the winners are). I saw Gravity twice, neither time in theaters, and while it was "good" in that it was a technically impressive and well written film it left no impact on me. I was so un-impacted by the film that I have thought about it more while typing this than I have in all the time since I last saw it. Meanwhile, Kimi No Na Wa I saw on a tiny screen on an airplane last year and it brought me to tears in mixed company and has since become one of my favorite movies.
Nobody needs to watch Hollywood jerk itself off for a few hours every year to know what a good movie is.

But you are right.. they tend to search in the "established" big Companies.
why does anyone give a rat's ass about whether a movie they like gets an oscar? Most movies that get nominated and/or win pretty much bought that right. If your favorite movie didn't get animated, that means your company isnt playing the stupid money game with the academy. Spoiler, that's a good thing
Ghibli originally piggybacked under Disney but is big enough to have his own clout now. But still thier films don't get the clout they deserve in the Oscars.

Difference being shinkai seems like quite a humble man with little ego, so I doubt the quality of his films will go down regardless of if people call him the next miyazaki

A lot of people misunderstood the ending to 5 Centimeters Per Second. It's a perfect parallel of the ending to "Your Name". In 5 Centimeters Per Second they're both just going about there normal everyday morning. And as they both walk across the train tracks. And they turn around but a train passes by. And when it finally passes shes not there anymore. They finally saw each other again after years. But instead of running after her and falling in love again. Takaki just stands there, smiles and walks away. His entire teen life he was afraid to move on, because he was afraid she hadn't. But in the end it was him that didn't move on. While she got married and lived a happy life. He realized he was the one that couldn't move on. His feelings for her kept him from being happy. So he walked away and moved on.
The manga also continues from the movie and gives Takaki and Kanae a more, say, conclusive ending. At least as conclusive ending at the same level of the ending of your name..

And what he meant "New Miyazaki" in other words is the *new* "face of Japanese animation in this current era" Makoto Shinkai. Also, Miyazaki's films fill me with wonder. Makoto Shinkai's films fill me with tears. He's more like the new Mamoru Hosoda. And we still barely used the old one!
dude.. Mamoru Hosoda is still working. How about we call Shinkai just Makoto Shinkai, he is unique in his own way and so does other directors. And honestly, the more style and taste in anime is great. The only thing missed from today anime is Satoshi Kon style which i love so much. RIP.

Sambou Jaiteh I agree. Calling Shinkai the "new miyazaki" is like calling Miyazaki "the Japanese Disney". It's a reductive title, sure they have similarities to one another but to label Shinkai a "Miyazaki-like" it takes away from his own work and gives audiences false expections. Shinkai isn't filling a cookie cutter mold of Miyazaki but creating his own art that is comparable to Miyazaki's work

Makoto Shinkai's greatest achievement is his inspiration to independent animators who don't necessarily want to work for a Disney or Dreamworks, doesn't have a big crew (or may have no crew), and may not have the top of the line software.
He showed that you can still accomplish your dream with the tools you do have available to you.
Calling him "the next Miyazaki" isn't saying that they make work that is the same, but that Shinkai is replacing Miyazaki as the face of anime films. It's also saying that he makes films that are as good as or better than Miyazaki's films, not that the films they make are the same but that they are of similar quality.

It's more common than you'd think. Lots of mangaka and animators get their start via hentai because it sells easily and allows you to develop the technical skills needed for once you move on from it.
@@GiganticTumor and plus, drawing and animating human body parts and clothes is THE hardest thing to do in anime. If someone can draw quality hentai they can draw anything.
And besides it isn't that much of a stigma in Japan. Lots of actors and idols delve into porn and lot of actors models and idols come OUT of being porn stars.

I have loved Shinkai's works since I first saw Voices of a Distant star, and have seen every single one. When they announced Your Name was going to be in theaters, and around my birthday at that, my friends and I planned to go to the nearest one showing it. Your Name is the only movie I've seen more than once in theaters, and I saw it 4 times in theaters. I ordered the soundtrack. I ordered the limited edition Blu Ray. I love it.
For me the major problem with Shinkai was how tragic his stories always were. Like honestly, after 5 Centimeters Per Second I got REALLY depressed. I mean not just the boohoo it's not the happy ending thing, I'm sad, no I was so shaken I still shudder just remembering it. And with Garden of words and more so Your name he fucking FINALLY made it good and I sobbed like a babe just from relief, unable to enjoy it the first time around. It always felt like he was a very sad person pouring his soul in his movies, I hope he actually found happiness and can channel that now. =D
When I watched "Five Centimeters Per Second" the other day, the same thing happened to me. I sobbed uncontrollably. I was so heartbroken and in despair for several days. I'm still in kind of a melancholy mood, to be honest. It just hit way too close to home for me. It reminded me of a childhood love I had that grew apart as I got older. I think the film is beautiful and it did a great job at capturing that, and the ending is fitting for what it set out to convey.
But... man, it was so sad. It's a beautiful sadness, because that's life... most of us don't end up with our childhood or first loves, and it's important to not let that consume you but to move forward and be the best person that your first love would be proud of.
I also get the feeling that Shinkai has a personal history with long distance relationships and childhood friendships that grow apart, because every single one of his films has these elements. It makes me wonder if he's okay. I know he's happily married, so I'm sure that he's fine. But, you know...
I hope that he's happy.
It remind me of my first crush but as time passed our distance and feelings just keep getting further away and finally i allready moved on to the best future.
I saw Children who chase lost voices for the first time when I was like 10 or so on TV and never forgotten about it since. I know it isn't the best film of them all, but I like it a lot.
The background music you used in this video... I recognised "Through the Years and Far Away" and the main theme of 'The Place Promised'... Very good choices, arguably Tenmon's best scores.
Also, you NEED to do a "What's in an OP?" on the ending montage of '5 cm/s'. I'd single it out as the most beautiful 3 minutes Shinkai has ever directed. And the editing... the way visuals match the music... if Shinkai never became a feature film director I bet he'd be directing music videos
5cm is my favorite anime film. Between the story. music and art - it tugs at the heartstrings like no other. For me, it's just beautiful.
I despise the whole idea of "Shinkai being the NEXT Miyazaki" or any other artist being compared to a big name in the same medium. I believe it takes away the artist's individuality and sours their work, I would even go so far as to say its insulting to both directors.
Like many, I've loved Miyazaki's movies and I also loved Your Name, but not once did I think of or compare with Miyazaki when watching it. Whenever I watch Spirited Away or Princess Mononoke, I think "These are great Miyazaki films" and go on to enjoy them on their own merits. Whenever I watch Garden of Words or Your Name, I think "These are great Shinkai films" and do the same as I did with Miyazaki's films.
Shinkai got the amount of attention for his films - especially Your Name - by his own right, just like Miyazaki did before him, so surely he should be respected as such?
I know this is just my opinion at the end of the day, it just irks me whenever I see such comparisons (...Does anyone remember when M. Night Shyamalan was said to be the next Spielberg?)

no... because they have completely different genres and tones accociated with them.
Miyazaki has more an escapist feel to it, and abounds in the fantasy side of things. where as shinkai doesn't really go that route. his style is much more adult.
comparing them undermines the fact that Miyazaki made films that appeal to all ages, and are still wildly well received to adults. sit a kid in front of Your Name and well... the result will be them getting bored and not really understand it. they aren't in the same caliber because one is far more wide reaching with who will enjoy the movie, while Your Name will only be enjoyed by people over the age of 12.

this is sorta the crap people say nowadays, comparing some break out work with someone who has had their work weather the test of time and still be enjoyed and watched by millions, movies reviewing well does not mean they are a classic (see citizen cane, one of the best reviewed movie that no one watches because its not really a "classic")

While I absolutely love Your Name, no one is the Next somebody. Shinkai is Awesome, but no one is Miyazaki
I think it just means he is the new big thing in Japanese animation, who can have similarly big name in the world just like Myazaki, who is known even to people who don´t know much about Japanese animation

I remember my first experience with shinkai's works was 5 cm per sec (I know this is probably the case with lots of people.) I just kind of came across the movie and it looked decently interesting so I watched it. The backgrounds and the animation blew me away despite finding the story to be too slow and I started showing it to all of my anime friends as an example of photorealistic anime. I started following shinkai as a director and I've seen all of his other films as a result.

My first Shinkai film I've ever witnessed (long before Your Name even existed) was The Garden of Words.

It sounds like Shinkai tries to make his work a synthesis of what modern technology can do and what the classics can inspire. That's a philosophy I can get behind.

Tenki no ko was really good in my opinion. The best thing about Shinaki for me is how he draws me in witht he animation and atmosphere, making me fully engrossed in the world and story. It makes every single moment hit so hard, even if the moment isn't 'perfect'. It's a truly incredible feeling that simultaenously makes me depressed and so incredibly fufilled.

Perfect Blue is so goood. It's one of my favorite movies *in general*. That's how good it is.
I have no idea why but this made me cry. It was a beautiful homage to an inspiring director/producer, and I never realized how many of my favorite films are his works until you went through them.
I have mixed feelings on his works as a whole, because while i personally find his technical abilities stunning and deeply impressive, I've always found his characters, storytelling, and reliance on his backgrounds to carry his movies rather..... stale, I guess? Especially in his earlier works, where he tended to run the same themes and emotions into the ground a bit (like how his first few films beat the 'losing love and connections to outside forces' thing over and over again, to the point where 5 centimeters per second is literally the emobodiment of that theme and not much else).
He always seemed rather..... stuck on those themes and also on certain visual metaphors (trains, good lord so many trains), and his use of sci-fi elements more often than not fell flat, or felt forced. Like he just wanted it in there because he thought it was Kool and not because he had thought about it indepth.
BUT. But. That isn't to say his works have no value, that they can't carry those themes and emotions well on occasion, or that he hasn't immproved IMMENSELY over time. Because he has, and I have high hopes for when I finally watch Your Name for myself (I know, don't yell at me for not having seen it yet please). I feel that its a little silly to treat him like he's some kind of god of anime, like some people do, but I feel he can grow a lot from where he is now, and I look forward to seeing Your Name and his future works.
This dude is a real O.G I remember back in 2002/3 when I've saw some notes in a specialized anime magazine about his ''Voices of a Distant Star'' OVA.
The fact that he did it everything by himself was very impressive and inspiring to me as a hobbyist animator.

Definitely agree, Shinkai is a good director, but, I prefer Hosoda. I think his work is more touching. Wolf children and summer wars, I belive, are some of the greatest films out there
The Boy and the Beast is amazing.
His movies have this lively gibli like characters and enjoyable and sometimes tragic emotional resonance, and wolf children is his masterpiece, so far. I think he got better movies as well, and hosoda draws inspiration from real life like miyazaki.
Summer Wars is probably one of the best anime movies I have ever seen. Makes me cry every time, and the animation is gorgeous. I also adored the way the real and virtual worlds contrasted. And don't get me started on the score. So amazing, perfectly meshing the worlds and showcasing the characters in their themes. Honestly, I'd kill to see you do a video about Mamoru Hosoda's movies. Summer Wars is my fave, but nothing gets me crying like Wolf Children, and The Girl Who Lept Through Time is a concept that reminds me of Makoto Shinkai's work, but stands as its own wonderful coming of age story mixed with some rather interesting sci-fi elements. (And I have to give a shoutout to my second favorite anime movie 'The Cat Returns'. May not have been Miyazaki, but I think its one of Ghibli's finest. Def one of the movies I turn to when I need a pick-up or just wanna laugh at some fantastical cat antics.)
funny is i actually saw every movie from him without even knowing that they where his movies my local library got anime bluerays and dvds and i watched them all many of them where his movies and other hidden gems.

I think that the place promised in our early days is super underrated among shinkai's films, the plot is realy thought provoking, at least for me, and the visuals really do stand up to the test of time. Anyone who is a fan of anime movies, and especialy Shinkai fans should definitely watch it
He makes the best looking anime movies. His writing definitely lacks sometimes, but he does live up to the hype.
Makoto Shinkai's movies transport me to a fantasy world and make me teary when the movie ends .The top notch animation adds to it. Miyazaki's movies make me nostalgic about a time I was not born in, about a place I haven't been to and about events that never happened. The old school animation adds to the vibe.

Thanks, man! Geoff's video made me think of how much precision and care Fincher takes in his cinematography and how it paralleled Shinkai's work ethic (and perfectionism).
Fincher knows better than to write his own screenplays. He leaves that to professionals and focuses on directing. Shinkai could take a lesson from that.
i started out with 5 Centimeters, and then Garden, and was really hyped (but missed out on) about Your Name, but i have to say, it's rare to find artists with the same amount of emotional vocabulary, and the ability to express/articulate that vocabulary... his works depict this "sweet and sour" feeling of unrequited love or drifting apart from each other so perfectly; they're on my "top 10 anime if you want to cry until exhausted" list :D

Still don't like to compare directors/films/artists, I bought all Shinkai and all Ghibly movies which were available. Many animes are just too good to discuss which one is "better", just embrase the awesome time with those movies/series.
I have to disagree with you Geoff, "Children who Chase Lost Voices" is one of my favorite anime movies and out of all of Shinkai's films that one resonated with me the most. The pacing of the movie was wonderful because the quiet moments have a lot of room to breath, and the themes he explored are the most interesting ones he's touched on. I won't write an entire film analysis on the film here in the comments, but I really love that movie and it's my first recommendation to people who are looking for a more obscure anime film.

it's not just his full feature films, but the commercials he did... he can tell a full, emotional story in under 5 minutes that will make you cry and make it look amazing... i was astounded when i first watched 5 centimeters per second, the backgrounds are so realistic and detailed - i love how you can see the etched initials in train windows and every little wear in furniture
Makoto Shinkai is brilliant and while I agree with every thing you said, I'd personally choose a movie like Wolf Children or A Silent Voice. Shinkais brilliance lies in the stunning animation and, in the case of Your Name, brilliant use of a phenomenal soundtrack, but his stories sometimes leave a lot to be desired. 5 CM per second is one of the best anime films Ive ever seen but it didn't leave me with the same powerful impression that Wolf Children did. Garden of Words, while also absolutely stunning in its animation, left me with a bad taste in my mouth at what I believe to be a wholly unnecessary romantic relationship. On the other hand though, if he believes Your Name to be incomplete, a very valid position imo, then I can only look to the future to see what his next film has to offer.
I havent. Unfortunately I have a lot of trouble reading scanslations (Poor English mostly) and I cant afford to buy every manga series Ive wanted to read.
About the soundtrack though, its something I only really noticed on my 3rd time watching it when the dub released. Im mostly a dub person but it really hit home just how much the movie relied on the soundtrack after I noticed that they dubbed it. Sparkle in particular is such a powerful song in the movie, the English version lost like half the impact. Same here. I generally dont notice soundtracks at all but by the 3rd time I had started to notice flaws in the story telling and it was actually the soundtrack keeping me invested.

Shinkai is his own entity he shouldn’t be compared to anyone. In his own right he is a unique creative mind with great talents and as an artist deserves his own space in the world of anime. A great talent that man is the way he portrays everyday struggles and relationships

I feel like while Your Name might not be great in the story department, it doesn't need to. I appreciate movies more for their ability to convey feelings than for their plot, particularly animated ones, and Your Name delivered greatly, because of it's incredible visuals and powerful moments. Maybe it ain't objectively what some people say it to be, but if you watch it in a relaxed mood and without putting your brain too hard at work, it can be a wonderful experience. Caring only about the plot is stupid given the artistic potential that each medium, in this case animated movies, has to draw you in. Maybe this film didn't draw you in because of the plot, but that's because you are putting the attention in the wrong place.
Shinkai is a good artist, sometimes even great, and an extremely hard working one at that, as shown in the video. But he will never be on the level of Miyazaki, and he knows it himself. No one can, though they might try and even get close. Miyazaki is a rare person, one that you can’t just replicate.

I do agree with most of the statements made in the video but I 100% disagree with calling Makoto Shinkai "the new Miyazaki" . Makoto Shinkai is Makoto Shinkai for the unique movies he makes , with his own atmosphere and aesthetic that speak for themselves .

what he means by that is the effect that his name produces, and how well known he is. For instance if you say "A Miyazaki movie" people instantly have an idea of what to expect, and he's well known enough that his name alone will bring in people and put butts in seats in a theater. Similarly, Shinkai is becoming as big and is beginning to gain a similar presense in the industry as Miyazaki. But he makes sure to note that it doesnt mean the two should be directly compared becasue each will have a style that does things the other does not, and so, it will never be an even comparison for either. Think of it like people trying to compare Cola and Pizza. They both provide tastes that appeal to a wide audience, but they do so in entirely different ways, and so comparing hte two isn't fair.

I don't even agree with that. He has 1 movie that sold extremely well. The others, not so much. The also don't have nearly the variety as the stuff Miyazaki put out with Ghibli. Mamoru Hosoda is a better fit for now, unless Shinkai continues to put out stuff that sells really well.
Comparing Makoto Shinkai to Hayao Miyazaki is like comparing Napoleon Bonaparte to Alexander The Great.
It's funny how Your Name is the only Shinkai Makoto film I've seen and Spirited Away is the only Hayao Miyazaki film I've seen and both so happen to be the most well acclaimed ones of their creators. I think the reason why i preferred Your Name upon my first viewing was because it was easier to understand than Spirited Away. I remember watching it in the cinema as a kid without much thought of it because it was very confusing. And even though I eventually managed to watch Howl's Moving Castle just a few months ago, I still could not get the level of enjoyment as i did with Your Name. It is probably because of the weird way Miyazaki tells his stories that just doesn't sit well with me. It could also be the fact that Miyazaki's films are so different from the conventional anime I'm so used to seeing both in their art style and stories. Shinkai's films felt more like familiar territory with many of the common anime tropes I'm used to just with exceedingly better graphics. This can all be a form of bias but that's just my opinion of course. ^_^

This is when I have to call you out on your weeb deek riding bias Geoff. Disney have been pulling off putting/incorporating CG techs into their animation way before Shinkai did with the earliest example being Tarzan. Or for a clearer example of mashing literal CG into 2d look no further than 2 years before The Place Promised in Our Early Days was released: Treasure Planet in 2002.
he could've simply meant when no artist in japan could pull it off, rather than nobody ANYWHERE, Shinkai was basically a one man army until he got the team that worked under him, so of course it makes sense that a company as big as disney could do things like this much easier and earlier
And take into account the dramatic difference in visual tone of the films, and what Shinkai was doing in The Place Promised in our Early Days is on a whole different level than Tarzan. True there was a 5 year difference in the release, but again it comes down to trying to compare apples and asparagus. Or trying to compare the graphic fidelity of 3DS to Vita games. One could have a more flush, uniform design that looks good together, while the other is pushing for what can look real with the tools it has.

Treasure Planet was awesome, and I was gonna say the same, Its not as close to beautiful as any of Shinkai's works but imagine the story of Treasure Planet told with the animation of Shinkai, that would be awesome as fuck.
I really enjoyed your analysis of Makoto Shinkai's works. I love to learn about animators and how they get started as well as other works that were involved in.
Personally I have only watched 50 cm Per Second and Your Name and I loved them both for very different reasons.
I think Shinkai is extremely talented (especially in regards to artistry), but I personally feel that the title "New Miyazaki" should be given to Mamoru Hosoda. That's just my opinion, though.
lol agree, but still calling the next miyazaki is still disrespectful. I think boy and the beast, Wolf Children, Summar Wars, involvement with One Piece movie 6 and The Girl Who Leapt Through Time. He's got a great track record
Hosoda has the mantra that anime should be inspired by real life too, every movie has a realistic relationship between characters, or even a whole family in summer wars. He would be a better canidate for having those emotional touching family movies.

Garden of Words is his best movie by a long shot, best story, best characters, and best animation. It's league's better than your name and I'm shocked that THAT'S the movie that impressed people. The one with the sloppy script where a two minute voice over montage glosses over every bit of character development and just announces "They're in love now." And not the deeply moving story of two people who help each other grow but aren't meant for each other.

Quality Waifu I disagree but only because it wasn't supposed to be some grand thing. It was a statement on how the quiet, small moments can change us. The 44 minute runtime reflects that: life is brief, don't waste it living a broken half life. But to each his own lol
Garden of Words was good until the melodramatic ending spoiled the whole damn thing. Shinkai has a flair for the dramatic, but that balcony scene was just over the top. I do want to watch it again though to see if my feelings change.
As for Your Name, I don’t see how it has a “sloppy script.” It’s his tightest narrative, with little to no downtime or wasted scenes (something that hasn’t been true of his previous films). As for the montage serving as the basis for their shift in emotion, that’s your interpretation, not what the narrative tells you (in fact, they’re mostly annoyed with each other during the montage). One of the main ideas the film explores is whether you would come to love someone you had never met if you lived in their shoes. The love that develops between the two is so subtle I hesitate to call this a romance narrative. Taki didn’t even really realize that she was someone special until she was gone. And when the do meet (both times) there are no melodramatic confessions. Just two people overjoyed to reconnect against all odds.
Trevor Habermeyer They're annoyed with each other in the montage but by its end they can't live without each other anymore. Losing the body switch horrifies them. They skip over all the emotionally resonant things that would make me say "Yeah, they love each other." If it's supposed to be some grand statement on "Love can transcend time and space and you can love someone without even meeting them." Then they skipped all the things that would prove that. More time spent with the characters being friends before the loss of the switch would have helped. As such it's "annoyed, montage where they're annoyed, montage begrudging co-operation, montage kinda friendly, montage ends, losing switch scares them into realizing they like the other person." That's sloppy to me. You say "No time wasted" I say "Rushed, half added development".
Let's compare it to another Japanese anime move that came out the same year and I find better illustrates a budding relationship: A Silent Voice. It also feels rushed at times (Too many superfluous characters) but it respects it's audience enough to take it's time and develop the emotions of the characters. You totally buy the feelings of everyone involved. No one has voice overs declaring "I love her now!" The emotions felt real. And that's why I think your name is his worst film: I didn't believe the emotions of the characters. Every other one of his movies I believed in the characters. Even in the melodramatic or melancholic times. your name's leads felt more like anime characters than any of the others.
I think you're mis-remembering a bit. There is no post-montage scene where Mitsuha experiences not being able to body swap (which makes sense because of why the swapping stops). As for Taki, "horrified" at this new development seems like an exaggeration. He's more curious, and there's this nagging sense that he needs to look into it more, which leads him to draw sketches of Itomori and ultimately seek Mitsuha out. To me, the first half of the film offers plenty of justification for Taki's motives. He lived this girl's life, and she lived his. It would, frankly, have seemed more odd if he just shrugged his shoulders after the swapping stopped and continued on with life as usual. Even if her actions did annoy him from time to time.
Death, whether literal or figurative (such as in someone moving away), almost always changes a relationship dynamic. How often do we hear about someone regretting not being able to develop a relationship further in wake of a death? This startling revelation changes everything for Taki, and to me, it's believable. He didn't realize the depth of his bond with Mitsuha until it was broken. This was not a bond forged through tender conversations and romantic gestures; rather, it was a bond born through literally sharing someone else's life. Shinkai's question seems to be: if that's all there was to a relationship - no meetings, no romance, just walking in another's shoes - would (or could) love be the result? For me, the answer is yes. Not an inevitability, but a possibility.
As to A Silent Voice, I loved that film too, and am disappointed that it often gets pitted against Your Name simply because they were released around the same time. That film, indeed, has too many characters, which is its greatest narrative flaw, but the relationship between Shoyo and Shoko is finely executed. (Though I do wonder if someone in Shoko's position would so easily fall for an abuser; even a reformed abuser. But I went with it.) I bought into Shoyo and Shoko's relationship, as I did with Taki and Mitsuha's, too. Though the latter's bond, again, seemed to hinge less on romance than a profound, inexplicable connection.
Yk what's crazy is that now hes his own creator hes known for his works his creativity is what drove him and now he has made a wonderful world and universe with your name, weathering with you and garden of words

Shinkai makes very good, but cliche movies. None of his plots or characters break conventions, or end up being complex. They nevertheless tug well on teen heartstrings. He perhaps can be called a Japanese Disney, but not Miyazaki.
Garden of words has the best animation I’ve ever seen
Mamoru Hodoa is most definitely the continuation of Hayao Miyazaki. All of his films are most distinctly in the style of Ghibli, but are all their own unique work respectively.
Makoto Shinkai however, is not. His work is not at all comparible to the work of ghibli, the stories are nowhere near similar and the style of animation is not at all the same. All Shinkai specializes in is pretty visuals and that's about it. Your Name is nothing ever remotely close to what Miyazaki would ever make. The only similarity between the two would come down to the amount of money each of them can bring in from the box office.
Makoto Shinkai spoke in one interview at Anime Expo that he knows about the comparisons between him and Hayao Miyazaki. However, when he said he respects Miyazaki and his work, he believes being compared to him is in his words “overreaching.”
He humbly answered he wants to be himself rather than being labeled the “next Miyazaki.”
your name wasnt even that good of a movie it was a great movie but in my opinion miyazakis movies where incredible and ouright genuis and almost all of miyazakis movies are on the list of highest grossing anime films i rly like the garden of words and weathering with u and call me someone who sticks to the past and doesnt accept new things and ude be a bit right but miyazakis movies are (cringe word incoming) magical and they are a big part of my childhood even though im only 13

A place promised in our early days is one of my favorite movies. I remember watching it after finding it in Blockbuster.
A: there will never be a "NEW" Miyazaki. Miyazaki, as will all artists, had a unique touch that cannot be replicated or replaced.
B: I haven't seen Your Name yet (and I plan to soon), but I haven't exactly loved what I've seen of Shinkai so far. Children who Chase Lost Voices was creative and visually stunning but the story never grabbed me, and 5CPS was visually stunning but the whole unrequited love thing was played so cynically and on-the-nose that I couldn't help but hate it by the end. I'm hoping I prefer Garden of Words and Your Name but thus far, I much prefer Mamoru Hosoda to Shinkai.
I think you'll find Your Name the same way as other works of Shinkai as, for me at least, the plot is nonsensical at times and the visuals impress enough to keep you attached
Well, I think that Your Name is Shinkai's best work to date, but just a little bit better than his previous works. It's still tackle the same thing like his previous works and still lack of important or relevant issues to brought up, where in Miyazaki's works always present; like social or humanity issues.
And I on the same page as you, I prefer Hosoda over Shinkai.
I'd say give Your Name a shot, as it's the most upbeat and at times downright cheerful work he's produced. It might be different enough to catch your interest, even if it does play on similar themes. And of course, the visuals are stunning, and hte music is woven in beautifully. I can recommend it on the strength of it's visuals and score alone.
Prefer hosoda, wolf children is already a classic, and they really dont need to fight over a title.
The new standard graphic for anime from 2020's and beyond
"New Miyazaki" is exaggeration, Miyazaki was creative, a new magical world to each work, Makoto Shinkai is the herald of tedium and stagnation, all he does is teenage angst in high school ... he is the best in this ... but it's still very boring, why not do it right away in live action? or tv along with the other 50 anime about teenage angst in school?

Before i watch the video, I will make a point that Shinkai Makoto isn't as progressive as Hayao Miyazaki. I say this because even though Shinkai Makoto was born in the space age anime period, and lived through the shonen fighting anime, his views on females within society are still not as progressive as Miyazaki. He focuses on what the female gender is currently as Miyazaki focuses on what females could be.
Here are some examples of Miyazaki's female protagonists, without names, but note how each of them hold a position of power, monarch of the wild, pirate leader, a princess and then queen, a girl who starts her own company, a god of the ocean.

Most miyazaki film is aim to address problem in Japanese society, while Shinkai film is aim to tell love story of 2 peep, it would be unfit if the female is unrelated to the audiance, just random thought.
Which is the entire problem with the idea of Shinkai replacing Miyazaki because one embraces the prospects of society, and the other outright rejects them. Its a bad switch, as much as I love Shinkai Makoto, his films aren't as connected to the world as Hayao Miyazaki.
I also feel bad for Hayao Miyazaki, He grew up in a time where they had to use firewood to heat up bathtubs, stoves weren't gas, and to talk to someone you had to send messages by mail or contact them by being connected by an operator. Once he's gone, no one will be able to tell those stories as if they were there. He's the last vanguard, yes, but being unique is not always a good thing.

Well, despite all, I still love Children who chase lost voices. Maybe it´s because the subject matter really speaks to me, maybe it´s because the other movies are some kind of love story, which really don´t do it for me, but it honestly is even one of my favorite movies of all time.
