For folders? I would definitely look at Cold Steels line. Its the only brand that seems to stand up to a survivalists type of demands. If people are not watching the youtube channel of JoeX, then you should. He torture tests all sorts of knives until they break. Cold Steel regularly goes the longest yard when tested. You would be surprised how quick many of the name brands known for being tanks, break when put to extreme use.

The cheapest Kershaw Link is what I keep in my truck as a backup/emergency knife. Great size and feel for an under $40 USA made knife. It is assisted and not the best steal but very very hard to beat for the price, especially to just sit in a truck and hopefully never be used.
Also some good picks: 1. Ontario RAT Model 1 - A sturdy folding knife with a good reputation for its build quality and affordability. 2. Cold Steel SR1 Lite - Known for its toughness and durability. 3. Spyderco Tenacious - A popular choice due to its sharpness and durability. 4. In Indiana you can carry only thing you cannot carry is a ballistic knife and a shurkien. Other than that you can carry anything, blade length and style does not matter, can be automatic, assisted opening etc. Can be carried open carried or concealed. We have very common sense knife laws in Indiana.
I would like suggestions for a first pocket knife for a child. Criteria: 1. Around 3” blade 2. Drop point 3. Stainless Steel (low maintenance, but can lean how to sharpen) 4. No assisted opening 5. Price below $50 but preferably around $30. I’m assuming they will lose it. 6. Needs a locking mechanism I don’t care about clip options. I usually remove clips. Considered an Opinel. Variety of sizes available with generic/simple ergonomics to cater for different hand sizes and allow for solid grip. Very gross motor skill 2-handed action to open/lock/unlock/close (good for young children who generally don't yet have fine motor skills - if the blade too fiddly/hard to close may fumble blade and cut themselves). Utility design caters for most tasks. Easy to operate. Steels (either carbon or stainless) easy to sharpen. Finally - cheap! Have a great day.
1st - the best disease fighter is the Steel Will Plague Doctor!! Moving on, 440C is the parent of many other steels. For example 154CM as DCA indicates (and 154CM led to CPM154). OMHO is that industry competition & marketing have driven much of the change. 440C became seen as 'common' & 'generic'. As soon as more 'fancy' sounding steels came along makers started to up the ante (not a bad thing). Nothing wrong with properly heat treated 440C. Very stainless and easy to maintain. Good choice for hunting/fishing. Sharp blades all.
You can add the Hogue Doug Ritter RSK or his successor EXLRSK to the list, about the same price tag. The last one has magnacut blade, good steel, up to date, very rust resistant and other qualities. And they feel more hardwork knives than Griptilian to me (i own both, so i can compare).
@@thorin693 I love both of them, and both are good knives for the purpose, with amazing action and blade centering without any blade play. But the G10 feels stronger than the FRN, and is more grippy. One more thing, my (1year old) Griptilian had an aweful bevel out of the box, i had to resharpen it. I hope Benchmade QC is better now, because i had the same issue on 3 of 5 knives from them last year. Now i see that the EXLRSK is a bit more expensive than the previous RSK, with the steel improvement. Maybe a deal breaker for those who have to deal with a budget.
@jvf4608 I recently picked up the deka in Magnacut it's my first hogue knife other than the scales feeling a little wimpy like the benchmade it's a great knife, going to upgrade to aluminum scales soon.
@@thorin693 Yeah, i got the same Deka with the flimsy scales too. Like the bugout (less flimsy in the second run than the Deka), they are not survival strong knives. I should have picked up the knifecenter exclusive Deka in G10 and Magnacut. Managing to get micarta handles, as i live in Europe, can't get scales from many makers/sellers that are in USA and not imported by my local sellers, as OG scales. I bet the micarta scales won't be worse than the plastic ones. And later, maybe i will be able to get some titanium scales like i've done on my bugout 😃

I've always found Case knives a good option for this. They have so many styles & handle materials/colours that you can get something individual to each child rather than all the same. Swiss Army Knives are also worth consideration with more emphasis on multi-tool features but probably aren't 'classy'. Only issue is that Case & SAK don't have the best steels. If you're just after a single blade with decent steel Boker (not Magnum range!) have a reasonable range esp. if you want a wood handle. Good luck. Thanks again DCA, for another great video! Glad you brought up the Gerber 06 Fast as an option. I have an older version, with the button lock, that's seen a whole Lotta pocket time. It's "fast" and very useful. Reasonably easy to sharpen and holds an edge pretty good for the steel type. Get you a cheap set of needle files from Harbor Freight, for the serrated part, and you'll be good to go!
The AD-10 is a beast and I agree that the drop point is the blade version is what it was made to have. The Benchmade Adamas is great, but pretty expensive if you have any car payments and/or ever want to have a drink with your pals, unless you've got some rank to help pay for it.

Buck 347 vantage has been in my pocket since it came out and has built more shelters and fires and skinned more game than my esee and tops fixed blades combined and doubled. It's super slept on! I personally am very used to 420HC (with the Bos heat treat) and know how to sharpen so it hasn't been an issue ever, but if you want a "better" steel then they come in S3VN with cerakote (what I edc now)
Being Swiss 'USA made' is not an important feature.. so my preference is the Victorinox Outrider. Costs a lot less than 100$ (~55$ ) too. The Outrider comes with more tools than just a blade, e.g. a saw and scissors. It isn't one hand opening, but the blade does lock.

Question for a most serious recommandation: I'm obliged to spend a certain time in jail soon and I need to choose a knife to edc there. No preference for folder, fixed or multitool but keep it manual and under 3" just to be safe if there are any legal restrictions. Pocket carry, no belt possible... Use will be edc, opening a lot of letters, carving messages into concrete walls, maybe self-defense but no outdoor. 😢 Should have a timeless design and a long warranty (minimum 11 years) and either a steel that holds an edge this long or that is easy enough to sharpen with a nailfile or a broken bathroom tile. I'm always on the hunt for "small but not too small" knives. My pocket carry rotation already consists of a Boker Plus DW 2 a Civivi Baby Banter and a Bestech Tulip. Can you show us some new and/or old but obscure small folders in that 1.5-2.5" blade range? I live in Texas so anything short of brass knuckles is fair game.

I've been considering the ArtisanCutlery Small Archaeo with lock key but have never seen anyone hold the knife with the lock in place and connected to the lanyard. Does the lanyard get in the way? Also, most serious question, years ago I cut myself at least 5 times opening or closing my first Leek under perfectly normal use, before finally giving up and gifting to a nephew who loves it. Considering I have 5 other neices and nephews, how many more Leeks should I try, give up on, and gift to happy relatives? Bonus, how many cuts would I end up with?
I recently purchased a benchmade knife online and discovered, according to benchmade, I had purchased from a counterfeit site! Very good counterfeit site, so buyers beware. Obviously, I will not be adding BM knives to my collection anymore.
I'm surprised you didn't mention the Zancudo series of survival folders. The designers are survival knife experts. D2 is a better choice than many and everything in the series is less than $50.
The Zancudo and Avispa are made by Proceeding Manufacturing in Taiwan. Jeff Randall has a long be term relationship with them. Like all my Taiwanese knives (Cold Steel, Spyderco, others) the fit and finish are very good and the heat treatment seems to be excellent. There is a serious knife culture in Taiwan.

I picked up a Heckler &Koch folding knife from a pawn shop (i have found premium knives dirt cheap in these shops!). Great action, stainless frame lock, not too heavy, drop point blade, no rust yet....in 440C. Its become my go-to ! Recently, i discovered it was made in collaboration with Benchmade , and other variants exist
How about the buck vantage at 13c26 steel...that would've a good knife for hard use made in America....I own that knife and is very solid knife with decent amount of edge while being small sized

The M16-04DB is $130 here. I'm seriously considering it. I have an M16-03S that I like for the most part except for the nylon washers and the seriously thin liner lock that doesn't inspire much confidence.
Knife question! Lake knife, I’m an avid waterskier/boater. I keep about 6-7 knives in my boat (mora, SORD, rat1, sog MT, assorted tool box knives,ect), I also carry a spy27 para3 on me in the water all day. Any makers production or custom still use BG42, ATS-34 or M2? Haven’t seen those for awhile I know they were great steels at one time. Since we still have the classic D2, 440C, 154CM and 420 steels I often wonder why the others never stuck around.

Forget USA made and under100 dollars if you want decent steel & heat treat, a solid lock up, a comfortable and secure handle (whether wet or dry) and good carry options - unless your buying something heavily dicounted.

I keep a couple of Buck 110 s around they always perform and travel in most areas with no issues.
Only problem is that 110'a are now $$$. Certainly a reliable classic though. Have a great day.

Cold steel Rajah 3 is a good survival folder and you can almost get 2 for $100 if made in Taiwan is ok.

After 10 years Benchmade is no longer competitive is the non sugar coated version.

TBH, considering how badly many US companies treat their employees and how little protecten they have, I prefer knives made in Europe/EU.

Owned a Gerber gator for over 20 years. Butchered a lot of medium sized game with it. Darn comfortable

Come on man. Thats not realistic at all. Not the EMP part. The part where he's in his car and only has one knife. As I sit in my house typing this, I can think of a half dozen knives in my car. If I actually went and searched through it, I could probably come up with a couple more. DCA I could see having a pelican case in his trunk. Just sayin'.🤙
Question for a most serious recommandation: I'm obliged to spend a certain time in jail soon and I need to choose a knife to edc there. No preference for folder, fixed or multitool but keep it manual and under 3" just to be safe if there are any legal restrictions. Pocket carry, no belt possible...
Use will be edc, opening a lot of letters, carving messages into concrete walls, maybe self-defense but no outdoor. 😢
Should have a timeless design and a long warranty (minimum 11 years) and either a steel that holds an edge this long or that is easy enough to sharpen with a nailfile or a broken bathroom tile. Thanks in advance! 😉
Hi DC! I really look forward to your videos, so thanks for continuing to put out great stuff! I am wondering about something: why are there so many options for deploying a blade? Thumb stud, thumb hole, flipper, front flipper and sometimes all of the above! Personally, I’m partial to thumb stud or thumb hole, but why so many options? Just because? Or is there a function that I’m missing? Of course, I didn’t include more traditional knives with nail nicks, those I understand. Thanks!
Hi DCA, my brother is in the Coast Guard and I’d like to get him a knife to use at work, I’m thinking good at cutting rope and good corrosion resistance. He’s a nonrate seaman for now (which essentially is like an entry level sailor) but in the near future he will specialize, either as an aircraft mechanic or an intelligence specialist. I bought the thumbnail buck knife for a buddy of mine as a gift, he says he doesnt know what he'll use it for but he loves it.
I'm always on the hunt for "small but not too small" knives. My pocket carry rotation already consists of a Boker Plus DW 2 a Civivi Baby Banter and a Bestech Tulip. Same. My spring broke long ago, took it out and use it manually now. It seems to dull really quickly though. But sharpens up easily.
I love Case knives, and I use straight razors to shave with. I was so stoked to find a Case straight razor on eBay, and when I got it, it was such a smooth shave! I know Boker makes straight razors, and I also have one of them. But I never knew about the case straight razors. Can you tell me why they stopped making them, and when they might have gotten out of it?

Related to beat the icon Kershaw Leek video, I love the look and feel of the Leek, but assisted opening doesn't agree with me. I've been considering the
ArtisanCutlery Small Archaeo with lock key but have never seen anyone hold the knife with the lock in place and connected to the lanyard. Does the lanyard get in the way?
Also, most serious question, years ago I cut myself at least 5 times opening or closing my first Leek under perfectly normal use, before finally giving up and gifting to a nephew who loves it. Considering I have 5 other neices and nephews, how many more Leeks should I try, give up on, and gift to happy relatives? Bonus, how many cuts would I end up with?

I'm surprised you didn't mention the Zancudo series of survival folders. The designers are survival knife experts. D2 is a better choice than many and everything in the series is less than $50.

The Zancudo and Avispa are made by Proceeding Manufacturing in Taiwan. Jeff Randall has a long be term relationship with them. Like all my Taiwanese knives (Cold Steel, Spyderco, others) the fit and finish are very good and the heat treatment seems to be excellent. There is a serious knife culture in Taiwan.

I feel informed on pocket knife and outdoor knife steels, but don’t know anything about steel types that make for a good fillet knife. I picked up a Heckler &Koch folding knife from a pawn shop (i have found premium knives dirt cheap in these shops!). Great action, stainless frame lock, not too heavy, drop point blade, no rust yet....in 440C. Its become my go-to ! Recently, i discovered it was made in collaboration with Benchmade , and other variants exist
Buck 112 was first thing that that I thought of actually the 110 light weight was my first thought but the blade length is a little too long
How about the buck vantage at 13c26 steel...that would've a good knife for hard use made in America....I own that knife and is very solid knife with decent amount of edge while being small sized
I've got a large and a small in 13C26, but sadly they no longer make the knife in that steel. The Vantage lineup has really dwindled lately. -DCA

The M16-04DB is $130 here. I'm seriously considering it. I have an M16-03S that I like for the most part except for the nylon washers and the seriously thin liner lock that doesn't inspire much confidence.

Hey DCA, my Father has been saying he wants a knife for a while. I am going to get him one for Christmas. He loves my Hogue Deka in magnacut but is also a cheap SOB. He has said he won't carry anything that expensive.He likes the size and weight but doesn't care much about blade steel. Any recommendations. Preferably $80 or less but there's wiggle room.

Love the channel, great job on every video. A co-worker loves my (red version) Lionsteel karambit with its pocket deployer. It's a little too niche for him, gawdy and expensive. What's the next best choice at a lower price and smaller, while still having a pocket deployer? Any makers production or custom still use BG42, ATS-34 or M2? Haven’t seen those for awhile I know they were great steels at one time. Since we still have the classic D2, 440C, 154CM and 420 steels I often wonder why the others never stuck around.

Forget USA made and under100 dollars if you want decent steel & heat treat, a solid lock up, a comfortable and secure handle (whether wet or dry) and good carry options - unless your buying something heavily dicounted.

My travel knife is a Cold Steel Verdict. It has a 3 inch blade and the triad lock. It looks boring but it will last me years and years.
