G'day Steve, nice to see your collection of engravers. Had a chuckle when you mentioned the perils of the Flexi shaft. Burnt myself on that thing in the early days, and my jeans all had holes in the knees. Thanks for sharing. Mike.
Stevo...I just ordered burrs, bearings and took apart my cheap shaft (just like yours that goes on underpowered grinder). I was able to mod the shaft to fit on my Black & Decker RTX tool (more power than the grinder). The slop on the handpiece can be fixed with a steel spacer between the bearings and add a set of bearings on the end like your good one on Video #1. I am looking forward to having a rig set up for under $20 of additional parts. I will do a video of the mods for others to see.
Tortured souls in that arlex screaming to get out. You could go into dentistry with that contra handpiece. Thanks Stevo. I have modified bigger units (Black & Decker RTX). They come with one bearing on the shaft that lets it flex too much, so I added another bearing so the shaft is supported by bearings on both ends. The reason I say this is because I have little disposable income and will be buying one of the cheapest units available and PROBABLY beefing up the shaft to reduce end play and make it more robust. (extra bearings are cheap)
Yeah we modify stuff where we can hey. I have done a bit of dentisty on myself, i had this annoying sharp tooth and rather than go to the dentist i set up a mirror & light @ the engraving bench & went for it with a diamond burr, it worked haha
@@stevohdee8118 I have a tooth that needs either pulling or a root canal. Insurance has been sitting on it for 4 months and the pain comes and goes. I know I can't do a root canal on myself but I MAY be able to pull it out.(back molar) I have a parallel jaw pliers that I have been eyeing up for the job....
Thanks Stevohdee! Enjoyed my typical LOL's and the info about the engraving machines. Is there a difference between these type "Engravers" and say a Foredom? Surprised me how those early ones were quite expensive back the days of rock and chisels. @¿@ Looking forward to more giggles and wisdom!
Foredom were the cheaper version of the dental machines of the time. I have used one briefly and found that the handpiece was pretty ordinary, they may have improved over time. The advantage with the micromotors is that they are quieter, no cable or handpiece to maintain/replace, stop quicker and cheaper to buy, cheers & more lols to come hehe
