Hey Troy, GREAT JOB as always, and GREAT CHOICE of songs! John Taylor is the most underrated bassist IMO!! In case you didn't know Nigel John Taylor was born on June 20th. So please have another Duran Duran song ready to salute John Taylor's birthday in a few weeks! Troy I love your prog covers, but also I really enjoy your 80's British New Wave/Pop covers too.
Thank you very much and thanks for the heads-up about John's birthday. As a reward, you get to pick the song. I have "Girls On Film" (which is a re-do), "Last Chance on the Stairway", and "New Religion".
@@TJH3113 Troy I'm SO FLATTERED by getting to pick the song. I pick "Last Chance on the Stairway." It was a tough choice, but IMO this great song has an understated pulse and flow much like the album's title track "Rio." John's effortless speed is so cool and clever. I can't wait to hear your take on this John Taylor gem! Troy yours is the probably the first You Tube channel I ever subscribed to. I greatly admire your talent and precision. Wow. Here it is - the song that started it all for me when I was a teen playing John Taylor bass lines on the used Hagstrom bass my grandfather bought me. Years later I was at a party - no one knew I played and when I said I did the host "oh yeah? play "Save A prayer." Out of the zillon songs he could have picked he picked that one. It was my moment of being in the crowd when the band asks "is there a bass player out there who knows the material?? Ours didnt show." Anyway, thanks Troy.
Thanks, I'm glad I learned it as well. I'd always overlooked it because it wasn't one of his more flamboyant basslines. It wound up being much more interesting than I'd expected.
John Taylor is a criminally underrated bassist. Maybe because Duran Duran was “just” new wave-y pop, but Taylor laid down some really technical and complex bass lines. Really been into a lot of his stuff lately.
One of my favorite bass lines. Being a bassist and learning in the early 80’s, this was one of the first bass parts i had to learn. John Taylor has a channel on Instagram where he shows his bass parts and talks about the history of each, what influenced him etc. Very cool if you’re into his playing. I was blown away when he said he’d only been playing the bass for weeks when he did Girls on film. Great job Troy!! Man I love your tone. 🤘😆
That's great to hear and I could see it being a good "early" bass line to learn. It's not terribly difficult, but it's still interesting and fun to play. Thanks and take care.
TJH3113 , I just really enjoyed it and thought it was such a melodic bass line. I was a big Duran geek in the 80’s and aspired to be like JT. So I learned it. Whether it was completely right I don’t remember but you pointed out some interesting things about the part. Planet earth was another one and Rio, which I know I butchered back then. 😂
Nice. John Taylor one of my faves. Always like his lines. New Religion, Friends of Mine and Night Boat three of my favorite bass lines by him. Keep up the good work. Met him, saw them in Vegas last year. Great show.
Duran Duran musicianship was always way more than the majority of their fanbase would have demanded. But I guess that's why they are a band that is a guilty pleasure for many of us. John Taylor was a fab bassist.
Hey from Dublin. This is my favorite ever Troy Bass Video. It’s fantastic. Love the commentary and breaking down the parts. Thanks SO MUCH for sharing. Cheers. Niall 🎸
Nice cover Troy. That bass is perfect for this one. In my humble opinion, this is one of JTs more clever basslines. The progression between the chords makes the line sing. It's a pleasure groove to play😉 thanks for sharing. Stay safe man.
Thanks. I agree, though the Aria crowd is split on who the true "face of the bass" is between John Taylor and Cliff Burton. I also agree with you that it is a great bassline... nothing fancy, but it has enough movement and syncopation to make it really interesting. I will and you do the same.

Really nice to hear John Taylor again. Rio is my favorite album from them. I cant think of another song or artist that plays less like that. It reminds me that sometimes less is more. Nice choice an well done.Thanks.
Awesome. I'm glad you liked it. Correct, often "less IS more" but normally the song will start with less and remain at that same level of... less-ness. I'm going to have to keep my ear out for another song like this. As you said, nothing comes to mind at the moment. Thanks a lot Chris.
I was going to ask if you had seen Johns vids. They are amazing and also cover the construction/ evolution of these popular songs. The man was an Idol of mine coming up, he and Steve Smith. Awesome job as always. Anytime two bass players talk of youtube, your channel comes into the conversation. You are a legend, like it or not pal.
I love how simply he puts his breakdowns... Part A, Part B... He seems to be quite a humbly guy. Thanks. Wow, how flattering. I'll have to tell my wife so she can bring me back to reality... haha. Thanks and have a great day.
Thanks Troy - really appreciate the commentary and breakdown. I find all of you coversr and tutorials awesome and inspiring. One of the more enjoyable aspects of the lock down has been going through your videos - please keep them coming!
My pleasure! The commentary was a bit of an afterthought, but a few people seem to have appreciated it. Thanks so much for watching and for taking the time to comment.
Great version of the song. Its a good example of how JT used simple patterns from the scales in the notes to carry the song with a nice tempo on the rhythm. Of the early songs I think it is a good example of his understanding of how the bass could drive a song, with outplaying another instrument. Simply brilliant
I was not into DD back in the day but as I’ve listened closer to various artists bass lines I have come to appreciate JT more. Your videos have greatly helped in that by cranking up the bass!
Same here. While I had a great respect for JT, even then, I really thought of them as more of a "boy band". That opinion has definitely changed over the years.
My favorite Duran Duran song because of the melody. Great job as always. If you haven’t done it already, maybe “New Religion” next? That’s my favorite John Taylor bass line.
Excellent cover my friend! Duran Duran is a very underrated band associated too much with the looks they had at that time (just like everyone else back then anyways). They wrote pretty solid music.
Great Cover Troy!!! (as always!!!),and Your 100% correct about Neil pushing more and more fills into the song as it progressed!!! I'm sincerely grateful for him doing that (as I'm sure MOST RUSH fans are). Anyway, that's a very beautiful bass, and sounds great on this one!!!
If I had a bass I would teach myself so much 😭 This is one of my favorite songs ever and I wish I could play this... John's just amazing, very well done cover! 👏🏻
Some amazing bassist and lines are “lost” in 80s pop songs. John Taylor, Nick Beggs, Andy Rourke, Guy Pratt, Mark Lickley and of course Mark King. Great choice of songs and absolutely love the Aria SB 1000
Great cover of one of my favourite songs!! I’ve only been playing bass since January (your videos helped me want to start playing!) and this is the first song I’ve learnt. It’s relatively simple without being too easy and boring and like you said there’s so many little details that you start to notice as you pay closer attention. John Taylor is such an amazing bassist. I could listen to just the bass on every song on the Rio album
Thank you, I'm glad you liked it. Congratulations on having taken up the bass. I'm flattered to have had any effect on your decision to do so and I hope that you derive as much satisfaction from playing as I have/do. I agree, a bass line doesn't have to be busy or terribly complex to be great and this one is a prime example of that. Thanks again and take care.
John Taylor is a great bassist many don´t take from granted... Glad to know you like him as well, so I know I like good bass players too! You played the live version, not the original studio version... Awesome, fella! Keep rockin´ on! \m/
Great one Troy. I guess this longer version was the only version I ever learned. I love playing this one as its very calming to me. The study of the different styles of play are always so interesting. I've been enjoying your interpretation of the playing style breakdown afterward too:)
TJH3113 Haha right, should have specified it’s Amy! As I was watching I was surprised to see how the verses changed, as I’d never noticed that before (even though I’ve listened to the song a gazillion times). Then you talked about it! That was so cool to have you show how the line evolves - can’t believe I learned something new about a Duran Duran bass line after all these years! 😺
😂Hardee-har-har😂 The funny thing is, this thumbnail was the best of the three! Well, at least I finally made it into your wallet. Hey, have you watched the other tutorials that John Taylor has done? They're really great. You could even watch them with the sound off if you wanted.❤️
I didn't receive a notification when this video was uploaded (strange since i subscribed a long time ago), well, i really love the bassline and i learned it from hearing like a month ago, yet your version is way better, i really need to get better on this! Thank you, and always do a commentary on your videos, I really loved that! (sorry if something is wrong, i'm not a native english speaker)
Saw an Aria Pro 2 at a shop in Atlanta, about 120 miles from me in 1980. Was going to trade in my Ric 4001S, but by the time I got back over there, it had sold The one that got away Great job as usual Troy
Definitely nice basses. I got this one for a great price... $650... I think? You've got to keep your eye out and be ready to pounce when the come up for a good price. I keep my distance for the active ones as their circuits are prone to failure and I don't want to deal with that, though I've heard that someone is making replacement circuits now.
Great playing and tone Troy ! (sometimes I feel repetitive about saying that but is always true). Been re re discovering JT lines lately and agree they´re well crafted and highly original.
Some interesting trivia, this bass line on the original recording was played twice, John recorded it on 2 separate tracks and they were mixed slightly out of phase with each other which gave the chorus like effect, it was a fretted bass, many people think he used effects and/or a fretless bass, not the case, just his standard fretted Aria Pro.
I just listened to this about a month ago. Such a great song. Glad you covered it and a killer cover you did. I love John Taylor's playing. So check this out. I thought of you last week. I purchased an investment property and all the contents inside of it. In a back closet I found a guitar case. Original case, Opened it up and my eyes almost popped out of my head. There she was. A brand new never played, Showroom condition, A 1965 Silvertone No. 319 4 String Bass. Made a call to a friend to find out some info. Sold back in the day by Sears & Roebuck for $80. Now it's worth $350 to $500. Cha Ching lol. Anyway I had to share that with you. Hope you and Lynn are well my good dude. 😎
@@TJH3113 Thanks. I was going to hold on to it. However I am most likely going to sell it. I'd like to see it go to someone who will play it and enjoy it.
John has been putting out vids of him explaining how he put his lines together. He and Roger Taylor were big on old school funk and disco. Check them out if you get the chance..good stuff.
Those Arias are an example of a bass which doesn't sound great by itself but really shines in the full band context. I want one so much (the one I recorded the Rio cover with was a loaner).
yaaaay!!! love you! :) been trying to master this one for a lil while and finally put up a video of it last week. cool coincidence! :) will have to study the way you play it and make a couple of adjustments to my playing. my ear is decent, but not perfect. i love how you break down John's writing at the end.
I watched your video and thought you did a great job with it. I don't give unsolicited advice, but the only thing I'd suggest would be to group your fingerings a little closer together. Don't get me wrong, you played the part perfectly, but you take a lot of risks jumping further away to notes that are close by... if that makes any sense. Keep up the great work.
@@TJH3113 omg, i didn't expect that i'd ever be followed by one of my favorite youtube channels! :D thank you for watching the video! you may not like to give unsolicited advice, but i really appreciate it! my partner gives me advice sometimes, but also likes me to figure it out on my own. personally, i want all the advice i can get! i will attempt to relearn this song from square one. i'm gonna lean heavily on your video. thank you! :)
Afternoon from a little leafy village in the UK! And thanks for playing one of my all time favourite Duran songs, and especially the commentary & breakdown at the end. I started playing about 3 yrs ago aged 45 but work then illness got in the way. But the last 6 months it's started to click. Your channel has been an ongoing inspiration. I'm going to attempt Save A Prayer this evening. Have you heard New Religion off the same album? My favourite DD song, driven by JT :) Cheers!
Good afternoon to you. I'm very glad you liked it. Thank you for watching and for taking the time to comment. I'm sorry to hear that you got sidelined by life, but thrilled to hear that you're on your way back! Best wishes to you. Yes, I actually did a cover of "New Religion" before this one, I just haven't uploaded it yet.
That's killer. I happen to look up a bass cover for this song which I haven't done in like a year and you have one uploaded recently! Have you checked out the new videos John Taylor has been putting out where he breaks down the bass parts?
Those aria basses are awesome. I'm getting my elite 1 refretted and I ordered a rauttia pickup to replace the crappy 80s active emg guitar pickup that's been in it before i bought it. Great cover and tone like always. Which of the 2 arias do you like more? Keep on rocking dude.
I agree, they are finely crafted basses. I think you'll be very happy with the Rautia. Thank you very much. Both basses play very well, but the white Elite (with the Rautia) sounds much more Aria-like, so that's the one I prefer.
@@TJH3113 Which Rautia pickup did you put in? I'm having the MM/mb being built. I figured bigger pole pieces would fill more natural. I need to figure the wiring out too, because I want the switch to work correctly. Parallel/Series.
The bass had the Rautia in it when I got it, but it's the "period correct" reverse P model. If I get one for the red, SB-700 I'd probably go with the dual coil humbucker.
Troy, what more can I say but arguably the best bass covers man on UA-cam. I have watched you over the years ( a little greyer if I may be so bold😀) and you have helped inspire me with my own playing, Rush and Duran Duran being a big part in my musical bass journey. Nice voiceover at the end. Is that the Aria SB1000? I hope you keep playing for many more years to come.🎸
We, you are too kind. I've gotten a bit grayer with you, but I'm alright with it, so long as it stays put... haha. That's wonderful to hear and very flattering that I served as even a small inspiration in your progression as a bass player. This is an SB-700.
Great one, Troy. I would like to leave you a suggestion, if I may. When you have the time, check a song from this brazilian band called Kid Abelha. The song in question is "Como Eu Quero" (portuguese for "How I Want (You)". The producer drew inspiration from Duran Duran's "Save A Prayer" when programming the drum parts. The basslines are also very similar, though this was never confirmed to be a direct inspiration. The way I see it, Kid Abelha is kind of a 'guilty pleasure' here in Brazil. If not for this, I think Leoni (the band's bassist) would be acclaimed as the great bass player he really is. He does simple, but memorable basslines. Have a great week, stay safe and bass on!
TJH3113 Yes he’s one of those bass players that are well respected, but not super famous. If you have time, have a listen to their 3rd album, Colours of Spring. I think you would really appreciate the quality of the musicianship. Cheers!
That's funny, I was just going over the Duran Duran songs the past few days. I was going to check this song out. You're reading my mind... I was actually feeling good about my playing, because girls on film and rio were a couple "goal" songs I tried them a year or more ago and they kicked my ass. I'm a lot closer to girls on film than I was before, and rio is feeling more possible. I can do planet earth almost the first time, and this one doesn't seem too bad. But anyway..I'm trying to think of songs that might "easy up" as the song progresses, but so far nothing. It's the exact opposite of all Geddy songs and even John Taylor seems to get a little funkier or as he would say "sexier". I was watching those breakdown videos he posted too. Anyway, thank you for another great video, love the extra, but you knew that. Cheers buddy, have a great week.
Yeah, this is a great one. Not too difficult, but still very interesting and enjoyable to play. It's a good platform to work on locking in with the drums. The other two you mentioned are both quite a challenge to play. Yes, Geddy would spice things up a bit as the song progressed, but I use Neil Peart as the example because no one did it bigger than he did. Just about every drum part he created was a slow build and you knew that his last big fill in every song was going to be... for lack of a better word, epic. Thanks again Tommy and take care.
TJH3113 I agree and epic is truly the word for that brilliant man. And as always, thank you for being so awesome buddy, you make it fun. You take care.
Great job as always.. but where in the world did you get those basses you’ve been using lately?? You have got so many different basses I can’t keep up...Lol.. love the way they sound and look.. I wish I could see a list of all you have.. it would be very interesting...have a safe and happy Memorial Day weekend...
Thank you. I got the white one from a nice fellow on TalkBass and the one I'm playing in this video off of Reverb. I'm working towards a series of videos on my humble collection before I start slimming it down. Thanks and you do the same.

Beautiful!
Thanks a lot!
Great version of the song. Its a good example of how JT used simple patterns from the scales in the notes to carry the song with a nice tempo on the rhythm. Of the early songs I think it is a good example of his understanding of how the bass could drive a song, with outplaying another instrument. Simply brilliant
Thank you, I'm glad you liked it. Thanks for the great comment as well, you made some really good points.
John Taylor always has interesting bass lines. Thanks for breaking down the lines at the end as well.
Definitely. It was my pleasure.
Thumbs up as usual Troy. John Taylor's work on 'A view to a Kill' and 'Rio' is awesome as well.
Thanks a lot, Gizmo.
Very cool!
Thanks Scott.
Aria Pro.. such a lovely Bass.. Great job!!
Thanks!
@@TJH3113 Heavy, but lovely just the same!!
One of my favourite songs. Terrific job as always. Stay safe Troy.
Awesome! Thank you very much. You too please.
Nice song to start my Sunday morning thx!!!! As always nailed it!!!!
Enjoy! Thanks!
My favorite Duran Duran song because of the melody. Great job as always. If you haven’t done it already, maybe “New Religion” next? That’s my favorite John Taylor bass line.
It does have a great melody, doesn't it?
(I actually did New Religion not too long ago and will upload it sometime in the near future.)
Excellent cover my friend!
Duran Duran is a very underrated band associated too much with the looks they had at that time (just like everyone else back then anyways). They wrote pretty solid music.
Thank you very much.
I couldn't have said it better myself.
Thanks. And, well said! Over half of a Rush audience knew some of his major fills by heart.
@@TJH3113 Indeed,ME included!!! Lol. ;-)
Top notch as always Troy. Thank you
I am glad you enjoyed it. Thanks Mike.
If I had a bass I would teach myself so much 😭
This is one of my favorite songs ever and I wish I could play this...
John's just amazing, very well done cover! 👏🏻
Are you thinking about getting a bass?
I'm sure you could do it.
Yes, he is... and thanks.
@@TJH3113 Not right now, I always tune down my acoustic guitar to somehow learn songs 😂
But I should really invest in one in the future, thank you!
Very nice coverTroy. Johns shoes are hard to fit in but you rocked them.
Thank you very much.
Very smooth!
Thanks!
Molto bravo come sempre!
Grazie mille!
Some amazing bassist and lines are “lost” in 80s pop songs. John Taylor, Nick Beggs, Andy Rourke, Guy Pratt, Mark Lickley and of course Mark King. Great choice of songs and absolutely love the Aria SB 1000
Truth! Thanks.
I think this is my favorite Duran Duran song. Thanks Troy :)
You can have more than one. Thank "you" Catalina.
Love it! The whole Vid
I'm very happy to hear that. Thank you.
Cool Troy! Thank you!
You bet!
Great as per usual, Troy! Now you've got to do Last Chance on the Stairway-- best bass line of the whole album!!! Pretty please with sugar on top!!
Thanks a lot. Someone reminded me that JT had a birthday coming up, so....
Well said! Thanks.
Great one Troy. I guess this longer version was the only version I ever learned. I love playing this one as its very calming to me. The study of the different styles of play are always so interesting.
I've been enjoying your interpretation of the playing style breakdown afterward too:)
Thanks Lori.
Nice cover as always, with detailed explanations at the end ! ;-)
Thank you. I'm glad you liked it.
Great job! Love this song. ❤️
Thanks Amy and/or Joe!
Excellent. I'm going to screen shot this video thumbnail and put it in my wallet ASAP.
😂Hardee-har-har😂 The funny thing is, this thumbnail was the best of the three! Well, at least I finally made it into your wallet. Hey, have you watched the other tutorials that John Taylor has done? They're really great. You could even watch them with the sound off if you wanted.❤️
@@TJH3113 haha! I have been watching them - with the sound ON!
I'm glad you stumbled upon it then. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. Your English was perfect.
Saw an Aria Pro 2 at a shop in Atlanta, about 120 miles from me in 1980. Was going to trade in my Ric 4001S, but by the time I got back over there, it had sold
The one that got away
Great job as usual Troy
Ah... they still turn up at reasonable prices from time to time. Thanks John.
@@TJH3113
Im totally happy with Spector. I gave my other basses away
I wouldn't mind finding another 2004-2004 original series Legend again though
I wish I would have bought one of those Basses in 1981. Aria Pro 2 nice basses
Thank you very much. As long as you keep saying it I will continue to thank you for your consideration. Yes, he definitely put out some great lines.
Excellent 👌🏾
Thank you 🙌
Some interesting trivia, this bass line on the original recording was played twice, John recorded it on 2 separate tracks and they were mixed slightly out of phase with each other which gave the chorus like effect, it was a fretted bass, many people think he used effects and/or a fretless bass, not the case, just his standard fretted Aria Pro.
That is very interesting and makes perfect sense. Thanks for sharing.
Very Good as always!. Did this Song about 5 years in my DAW...I was shock that it came out 90% like DD :)
Thank you. Very cool. Did you do the vocals as well?
TJH3113 No didn’t do at the time. May go back to Track Lead VOX & Harmonies. TY, George Amodei
Very cool and thanks.
Very cool on bass acquisition too! Are you going to hold on to it, or sell it. Those things are pretty delicate.
@@TJH3113 Thanks. I was going to hold on to it. However I am most likely going to sell it. I'd like to see it go to someone who will play it and enjoy it.
Nice job! One of my favorites to play. John Taylor is very underrated as a bassist.
Thanks! I think people are starting to discover, more and more, what a great player JT was/is.
John has been putting out vids of him explaining how he put his lines together. He and Roger Taylor were big on old school funk and disco. Check them out if you get the chance..good stuff.
One of my favorites! I slide a couple of the notes, not sure if John does or not, your version sounds amazing! Great work!
Awesome to hear! Thanks.
Awesome! Nailed it... again! How about Mysteries and Mayhem by Kansas?
Thanks! I'm not familiar with that song. I'll check it out.
Those Arias are an example of a bass which doesn't sound great by itself but really shines in the full band context. I want one so much (the one I recorded the Rio cover with was a loaner).
Couldn't have said it better! I thought your cover was fantastic!
@@TJH3113 That's an honour, thank you!
Great !!!
Thank you!!!
yaaaay!!!
thank you for watching the video! you may not like to give unsolicited advice, but i really appreciate it! my partner gives me advice sometimes, but also likes me to figure it out on my own. personally, i want all the advice i can get! i will attempt to relearn this song from square one. i'm gonna lean heavily on your video. thank you! :)
Thanks Troy. I’ll effort this next
My pleasure. Go for it! I think it's a pretty accessible bass-line.
Awesome! I hope it was helpful. Yes, but I need to get caught up on what he's been doing.
@@TJH3113 Will be interesting, is having similar basses but minor differences in color and pickup modification.
Troy, have you ever thought about covering Wuthering Heights by Kate Bush? Today I saw it's a nice bassline. Best regards from Brasil!
I'm not sure if I've ever heard it, but I'll try to check it out. Thanks for the suggestion. Best regards from New Windsor, NY!
Thank you. I'll check out your suggestion, thanks for it. You never know.

Thanks Tina!
Awesome! Thank you. Do you know of Paul Webb from Talk Talk?
Thanks. No, while I did a cover of "It's My Life" I was not really familiar with the bass player beyond that song.
