This should have a million likes... Seriously, bass lessons from John Taylor deconstructing DD songs and history?! Are you kidding me?
!!!! exactly!
I'm more curious about those ~10 people who dislike John's videos, I'd really like to take a look at them. :)
@@LardoAG They can't play for shit lol
Ther´s no great difficult in translating the DD songs. I´ve beeing done it since I was a begginer bass player, during´ the 80´s. But I think he is so kind and didatics that it can really helps new musicians
Theres no amount of money that could pay for this treasure John is kicking down to us. My gratitude is maxed out!!!
John Taylor seems like a genuinely nice guy - clearly in love with music. Duran Duran were my absolute favourite band when I was a young teenager.
They were my favorite band too -- & the only band I continue to follow whenever possible.
Yes he was! I met him at his book signing!
Realmente, genuíno !!
John’s joy is so infectious!!!
Isn't it? I couldn't stop smiling, either!
Yep. It’s fun to see him having so much fun.
Exactly what I've been thinking. Joy.
Absolutely. About 7:51 in particular. These have been my favourite videos from lockdown. Not only for the behind the scenes info about the making of some of my favourite songs but also just seeing how much the songs still mean to John. To still have as much passion and enthusiasm for past work - that’s really special.
That's 👆 what Music 🎶 does That is
There’s that old saying, “if you love what you do, you’ll never work a day in your life”. I believe this is true for John. His joy is just infectious!

I love John Taylor's spontaneous smile whenever he is into playing 💖
He still has a beautiful smile 😍
@@carlahubbard7251Yesss, He is such a beautiful human being and will always be 😍💖
Mona Abdelrahman It’s infectious. I couldn’t agree more. Here is a man enjoying every second of what he’s doing. I think these are just fantastic!
@@IAllegedly Exactly!! once I watch these videos and him getting into the music and smiling, I automatically smile and feel that joy
He makes me smile too😘😉😊
Back in the 80’s my Dad always told me “Listen to their bass player he’s great” whenever Duran Duran was on the radio. He was right!
When one of your musical influences for decades does a tutorial and turns out to be one of those amazing down to earth people that makes you admire them even more! :)
Yup, he's a hardcore musician!🤘🏼
An absolutely lovely guy.
Totally agree!
This is true. He's so easy to get to know this way, you feel that he's been your friend forever.
I have not met him YET, but every story I hear is very complimentary. He has a reputation as a genuinely nice chap.
How can anyone NOT enjoy watching this beautiful person doing what he clearly loves doing and does so damn well? I find myself smiling from ear to ear -- his enthusiasm for his craft and that infectious, spontaneous light that happens with his whole face when he smiles -- that is priceless. Clearly this is a very special human being, and the fact that he shares his knowledge, history, and adoration for all things music, is just so effing awesome!
I have to say John I’ve been really enjoying these sessions, and shedding a little more light on classic Duran Duran.
thats why Durans are so infectious
Yeah it's amazing how great the sound engineers work. These bass lines unproduced sound so lame. I know he's 60 and all but the tech guys made him sound so good...
@@Me4-gc8qs well, a bit, very dry, no fxs, no fancy bass amp either
John! You need a new rug! That ones knackered!
@@Me4-gc8qs What...? Bassline sounds so lame...? I was wondering how you could judge the sound by the recording from a cell phone. I find it kinda funny, I find it kinda sad.
It's incredible that the actual bassist from a band like Duran Duran is teaching his music on UA-cam.
With humility and joy, too!
Maravilhoso, compartilhar conhecimento é superior, desse mundo ninguém leva nada.... vamos, viver, compartilhar... se respeitar. Independente de tudo !!! VIVA A VIDA !!!!
This song is HANDS DOWN the FINEST James Bond song EVER!!!
Michael Fischer Live And Let Die? It’s between the two.
It’s certainly the first one to really get my attention as a 15-year-old in 1985. The band were really firing on all cylinders here.
Yep! Not the new Billie Eilish shitty song for sure.
Did like the AHA one
@@machiavellian7490 Yeah, it was gonna be a tough call to follow on from DD going ballistic, as they were here, - and at the top of their game!
Still, they (A-ha) gave it a good shot.
Now, wouldn't it be nice for England to have the calibre of DD to call on for their next Euro-Vision Song Contest entry, and be perhaps a match for other examples of Scandinavian brilliance that were to give us Waterloo, and much more besides!
(Alas for poor ol' England!☹️)😁
Never thought a bass guitar solo could be so nice.
I'm no bass player, and until I recently listened to John Taylor's (excellent) autobiography I wouldn't even have said I was a particularly big Duran Duran fan. But you know what? After listening I went back and listened to the whole Duran Duran back catalogue and I realised all over again just what an amazing band they were back when I was a teenager in the 80's. And John Taylor? I never even realised what a massive part of their musical success he was. That led me here, and as has already been commented his infectious smile and pure happiness at revisiting these grooves has brought a massive smile to my own face. Bravo. Top bloke.
Yeah!!
John's basslines were never boring , he really meant what he was doing, thanks for the great videos!
Anyone who slagged them off in the ‘80’s as manufactured pretty boys who couldn’t play really needs to be watching this channel.
I love that John really enjoys when he is playing.
John is one of the most underrated bassists and musicians ever.. even though my main genre is Metal and progressive rock … I’ve always appreciated John’s playing ..
I was 12 years old when this came out in 1985 and I was always mesmerized by the bassline in "A View To A Kill", because it was subtle but at the same time unforgettable.
Yeah this was good, but my favourite JT baselines, I think, are from the Rio track My Own Way, especially at the intro, when I think his basslines basically kick the song off with such punch! (Sorry, no subtlety here!😁) And while Planet Earth, and Girls on Film etc., were good, this was the song when I also began to like these guys as really good musicians, and not just manufactured pop, etc.😊
Does John also play the bass on Rio? Just before & with the Saxophone break?
I was 5 years old )))
Indeed, goosebumps.Johns basslines are such a thing; cool, sexy, funky, happy what a vibe
I was a little bit older & got the white vinyl..& didn't get there might a meaning to the choice of colour for many years...
"Deceptive in its simplicity"
I find most music from the likes of Duran Duran and Spandau Ballet like that. You think they are simple songs, but under the surface there is incredibly sopisticated musicianship at work.
John is an incredibly charismatic fellow and a world class bass player.
He sure is. As a teenager I crushed on him but I'm also a musician and now realise what an amazing bassist he is. Thank you John x
I love how much JT enjoys presenting this song, 35 years after they recorded it and having played it at virtually every performance.
I can see the respect he has for Bernard Edwards anytime that John mentions him.
And knowing this comes full circle with the great and unique collaborations with Nile Rodgers.
'Nard was a god - MASSIVE pocket, in fact, that could be said of the whole Chic team, easily "One of the best rhythm sections of the 20th century" - just check out the bass line on this song for a rare, unreleased Fonzi Thornton solo album, produced by the Chic team ( 'Nard & Nile etc ) - it's Mr Bernard Edwards on bass - and it's not just Bernard's note choices, it's his articulation, it's like he's carrying on a conversation with you … it's both where he puts the notes, plus the space he leaves to let the groove breathe around them - the guy was just incredible - John couldn't have picked a better influence: ua-cam.com/video/RH9K3hfiYoE/v-deo.html
Thanks for posting that fonzi song its badddasss!!!
@@CusterFlux thanks for the link
@@johndupont8628 I was stunned when I first heard it - I couldn't believe it wasn't released - it's so obviously a hit, sure, maybe not quite a #1 - but it's easily top 20 ( with a few production tweaks, it could even be released today, it's that good ) … but I think the problem was the whole "Disco Sucks" backlash of the early 80s - the record company just didn't have the courage to get behind it, unbelievable
When I'm 60, I just want to be like John Taylor. That's my goal now.
iamthief Find your joy. It really makes a difference...
Such a great tune...Duran Duran WERE the 1980's. Huge band, so important to me as a young man. John Taylor is a gem and a brilliant musician.
Love John's humility, humor, skill, and generosity when acknowledging his influences and band mates.
It makes me so happy to see John's happiness when he plays his bass! 🇬🇧 🇺🇸

John Taylor
The thing I love about British musicians is that they are not ashamed to acknowledge the Black Americans who inspired them. It is the ultimate sign of respect that John Taylor has always shown for and given to Bernard Edwards, since Duran Duran rose to fame.
Americans have done the same, but that doesn't keep them from getting the "racist" and " cultural appropriation" tag pinned on them anyway. People like you don't let reality get in the way of their own racism and blindness, just remaining ignorant and believe what you've heard instead of listening to the artists themselves.
His presenting is really quite good.
WOW this dude really know his shit....that's musician talk but easy enough to follow I really didn't know he was so involved he is they are the real deal !!!
A man in love with his instrument so to speak. It’s so infectious. He seems like a great guy.
That’s a man that’s happy with what he’s doing. 😊
Free music lessons from the legend, Mr John 'F*cking Bass' Taylor! Just great!
The press always deprecated D.D.'s musicality back in the day. Anyone sexy had to be a musical lightweight.
@@jeffreyquinn3820 I know! But, they are still here making music, and where is the press right now?
@@jeffreyquinn3820 And yet that's one of their biggest strengths. They have the ability to _write_ memorable songs and they are a solid band. Their legacy speaks for itself!🙂
@@jeffreyquinn3820 Roxy Music weren't lightweights.
About 90% of that went well over my head, but it was utterly fascinating.
It's like it all comes flooding back to him when he plays, he's loving it. Such a talent.
I am 47 and having a DD revival, and it`s now I discover the importance of Johns bass in the whole DD sound. Never to old to learn something new. I`m a sucker for basslines that actually do something more than just keep the rhythm. John - the lead bassist
@7:38 is when the bassline goes from really good to exceptional. And with John's laugh, you can tell that he's still loving just as much as we are after all these years. Love this series.
I have always loved this bassist but I’m realizing as I’m watching these videos that I think he was my favorite bassist ever this whole time.
I'd love to watch Nick one day explaining his keyboard parts in this song.
Nick has some keyboard videos on youtube, just query his name.
I don't think either John's or Nick's could be step by step enough, b/c it would take extremely long videos for that, but they're still a bit informative and nice to watch.
I enjoyed them, and these are awesome, too!
I was thinking the same thing watching these I wish nick would!!
The dueling synth & guitar stabs along with John's bass line & that tight drum beat make A View to a Kill for me.
Love it! OMG he is up there with Bernard Edwards when it comes to memorable bass lines. What a talent!
And that is why Bernard Edwards worked with him on The Power Station.
John, its so obvious how much you love playing music and teaching us. Thank you.
I was teenager during 80's and my favorite bands were Depeche Mode (religion to many teenagers), New Order (sound that will live forever) etc. but let's be honest my sisters and my female cousins they really loved Duran Duran that was the biggest band - and hysteria then just like Beatles... and I must also say that they created many perfect songs that's for sure... of course this view to a kill / Bond but even more The Chauffeur, Save a Prayer etc. ... thank you John for these great youtube sessions and greetings from Finland...
Amen!!!! I'm a sucker for Girls on Film, Wild Boys with Simon on that wheel of doom. Seven and The Ragged Tiger was probably one of my first cassettes.
Crazy song. So complex and modern. I was ten when it was released and i still can't explain what it does to me.
Modern music pales in comparison to this.
I don't care what you say about John, he seems like a decent and genuine guy.😉
It's getting clearer in every episode what the professional level of DD is and the quality of their songs delivered over the years. I have so much respect for them. And I LOVE the time and the effort John Taylor shares with us.
Who on earth gives these insights a thumbs down? Weirdo's. Thanks John, these vids are brilliant. Thank you.
Boring, Soulless, Arrhythmic, Sad, Angry People maybe?. Luckily there's just a few.
Probably the same people who are pissed that there's no "tab" for the bassline. The "tab" is your ears...
@si h So true.. 😏
@@mbrew3244 like what you did there 😉
Magic John, bloody magical!
The entire bassline is awesome, in fact, I always pay attention to this bassline every time I listen this song!
I really love how John enjoys teaching the way to play it
This song is a clever bass masterpiece, it’s got everything in there helping to make it such a powerful song. Loving these videos John 👍🏼
This remains the only Bond Theme to hit the U.S. Billboard #1spot. Classic tune. I love these uploads - JT is one of the most underrated bass players in modern popular music. And I love that smile when he settles into the groove around 3:05. This man STILL loves music. A true inspiration.
That key change really blows my mind... it's totally seamless!
John Taylor is one of the best musicians in the business. He always knows how to lay down the funkiest bassline. Thanks for 4 decades of great music.
Praying for the 105 people who gave this video a thumbs down.
Have fun being negative hahaa
OolK; Let's Go To Funkie Townhouse
@@ephesians.6 I'm assuming the thumbs down could only be because of the portrait ratio...🤔
I hope he does "Notorious" next. I always loved that bassline.
“What a f***ing song” indeed. THE best band of the 80’s with THE best music. Never stopped loving DD ❤
4:37 no words to describe how i love this section! John's fingers in the brain.
Полярный Лис I know! Very nice. Mysterious
Duran Duran still the best of all! Best singer ! Best guitar ! Best bass ! Best drum ! Best band for ever
Just like a fine wine...gets better with age, a smile that could create a rainbow! xx
I love John Taylor's bass work. Top musician for certain. And he is a genius. Thanks for the tutorial.
I so much appreciate what he did to explain exactly how the songs came together, like what the first thought was and or first riff, then the next element then etc. etc. NOBODY ever does this. its like the hit makers want to be assholes and keep it all a mystery, which of course they do even if its understandable. this gave great insights to a songwriter thats constantly trying. thank you so much John for your unselfishness.
You don’t see 80’s pop bands with great musicians too often. John knows his shit.
"...but what a fucking song" - touché
!!! While Rio is your crowning glory, as far as base grooves and technique goes, I've always felt that this song is, all around, the absolute best of DD, right down to Simon's dodgy lyrics. I really wish I'd bought the single on vinyl back in the day.
Apart from being a fabulous song, what makes this so special is his obvious love for what he does.
I was not and am not a duran duran fan BUT John Taylor is one of the best players I have watched. His bass lines are fantastic - well thought out and go with each song. They are the types of lines I like to play (Yes, I am a bass player) He keeps the foundation of the song going and adds, what I call little flurries, fillers and tweaks that are perfect without being flashy.
"But what a fucking song". I couldn't agree more. Fantastic piece of music.
These videos are fantastic. And yes, your smile is infectious and contagious. You get into a groove often, and almost seem to forget the camera is on. The pure joy you are feeling is why we love you!
John, sir, you are a legend. I know Bernard would be extremely proud of you. You have given my ears many moments of joy!
I could watch these bass tutorials/stories all day long! Thank you so much John!
That smile, still that gorgeous and captivating smile - what a great clip and what a pleasure to see that joy on John's face. Duran Duran - what utter joy you have given me in my life!
The very best part of this video starts at 6:40 😊 you can see the pure joy on his face when he plays ♥️ that’s really what it’s all about ♥️
8:10 Never a truer word spoken, John.
Seeing you smile when you play, I imagine that you’re having some wonderful memories.
It makes me smile, as well, with my wonderful memories of your masterpieces. 🎸 ❤️
Disco octaves were his bread butter, along with that infectious smile
Amazing.
He's one of my favourite bass players.
Brilliant Bond song. Love the story about how John just bowled up to Cubby Broccoli and asked him when they're going to make a decent Bond song again! Especially after Rita Coolidge and Sheena Easton's rather mundane efforts.
😍😍 Could watch john and listen to him talk and play bass for ever
Once again, John shows us his magic. As a drummer, the bass player is my best friend.
He's so classy, educated, calm, talented and his accent is music to my italian ears. Such a soul!
I don't even play bass, and these tutorials are fascinating insights into the Duran songbook! Really enjoyable,Great work!
2 years later..I'm seeing this...as ONE OF MY FAVORITE EVER SONGS FROM DURAN DURAN ❤❤❤
Man these vids have been great while we've been locked up ....I want to go hang out with John and hear some stories 🤔
TOTALLY!
Count me in 🎸
That would be awesome! Along with the legendary Nile Rodgers. 🙂
Genius on full display. He makes it look easy to write and play colossal hits.
Can’t get enough of this! He’s clearly having fun and so wicked talented. JT is the best!
A huge part of what made Duran Duran sound like Duran Duran! Feel fortunate that I saw you guys in the 80s. Your songs have held up beautifully over time. Additionally, I still feel Duran Duran are not given enough credit for their impact and contribution to music video production - raising the bar with the cinematic feel of videos like "Rio".
Simon once said they play music that makes you feel good ,how true cus John is always smiling and show's us how it's "DONE " thanks JT much love... 😘🥰💓🎸💓🤩

Love these bass tutorials. Whomever gave this vid a thumbs down must be from outer space! 🪐 One of DD’s best songs. Brings back great memories of my teenage years. Love JT. Thank you, John, for putting out this tutorial. ❤️

John please do Save a prayer, its one of the best of all time bass línes... Its a must!
U r one of the best bass players from the 80s. Also, killer Bond theme.
Sticking to the same note at 2:21 despite all those chord changes in fantastic
It's because all those chords are in the key of cminor, something I realized along the way
I added my like, that’s for sure. John is one of the meanest bass players I’ve ever heard…never enough credit. I grew up with DD in the 80s! 👍🏾

My favorite Bond Song EVER!!
This series is so good! Thanks John!!
These videos were literally the only good thing to come from lockdown. I am a bassist myself, I have all respect to John. He has a great sense of rhythm, and can play several styles. Such a great ear for melody. I wish he would continue this series!!
This song is a classic !
The joy John still has in playing these songs is a delight to see.
Amazing song and amazing bassline, but most of all I’m amazed by how well spoken and good of an instructor John Taylor is. I watch so many bass tutorials and he has got to be the most articulate when it comes to explaining the intention behind everything and deconstructing how it’s done.
You’ll ALWAYS be one of my top inspirations when it comes to bass and music theory, you’re truly iconic and will always be a legend!
