The great Rutger Gunnarsson. one of the true greats. His timing , feel, syncopation and sheer inventiveness were amazing and you have matched him in every department. That Spector sounds fantastic too. What do you use amp wise?
This bassline is criminally muddy on the original recording, a rare lapse in ABBA's otherwise stellar recording and mixing. Incidentally, there's a video on YT of Rutger playing this on the same bass he used for the record about 6 months before he passed. Unfortunately they don't keep the camera locked on his fingers, but you can hear the magic.
I never knew there was so much going on . Really opened my eyes to start listening to the bass lines more and try to figure them out. Back in the day I would of never thought of trying to play any songs but rock and metal. I was hanging with a bass player well a well rounded musician that opened my eyes to Stanley Clark bought me a ticket to his show and was amazed at how closed minded I was. Since then I try to listen to everything but now you opened my eyes even more. Your playing to me on the song seems spot on watched it three times already before make no this post. Your the man!!! Thanks for teaching me some new tricks. Peace my brother ✌🏻
It took quite a while for me to appreciate different types of music as well. I used to be a real prog-snob. Funny you mention Stanley Clark, we're going to see him the day after Thanksgiving. Thanks a lot.
i feel you man! i mean i wasnt listening to only metal but it allways had to be some underground niche thing. since i started working construction a few yeahrs ago we are allways listening to a local radio station wich mainly plays 80s pop and disco music. it took me a while but i learned to apriciate it and im happy that now if i like something i can just enyoi it without thinking about if its cool or to mainstream or whatever!
Dude!!! Doing this song makes you cooler in my eyes than I already thought you were. YOU ROCK!! No, I'm not a big fan of 70's pop, but (if we're honest) there IS plenty of music out there that sits outside of our "cool" radius that we secretly enjoy. This song is one of those. Call them "guilty pleasures", if you will, but they are a part of our collective soundtrack.
Before my rock days my parents had about six ABBA albums. Needless to say, I wore them out. This song is so iconic and timeless, it brings back many good memories as a child. Excellent job as usual!
Yassssss! That slide at 3:11! I’ve only seen one other bass cover of this tune that does that slide at the end. It’s one of those details that absolutely makes the song. Amazing cover. Thanks for sharing!
I always try to capture as many minute details as I can and this song had many of them. Thanks for catching that one. Another, stranger one occurs just before the slide at 3:08 where the bass plays a C as a passing tone (which sounds slightly off but adds some tension) when it plays a C# every other time in the song.
TJH3113 Seriously, you captured just about all the little Jamersonisms in the tune. Only thing you missed in my humble observation (and I’m not being a critical prick, only a lover of this bass masterpiece) are the two slides at around 2:35 just after they sing “...and when you get the chance...”. There are two quick slides...like a woo-woo. But again, this is probably the best bass performance of this song I’ve seen on UA-cam. Thank you! Been trying to learn this bass part for no particular reason...and I’m not even a bassist. I’m a guitar player. Lol!
I'm a guitarist for over 35 years now and i love it. A couple of years ago i've started to define songs into to major contributing instrument on it. So, basically there are guitars-songs, drum-songs and, ofcourse, bass-songs. Dancing Queen immidiatly came accross to me as a major bass-song. And it may be crystal clear on why ! As a childhood song i've grown up on it through the years, but finally understand what made this song soo great. In my humble opinion it's an one of a kind song supported by really great riffs, that where played by the late Rutger Gunnarsson. Due to a lack of stength in my right fingers i will never be able to do this on a bass guitar, so, i sometimes try it on the lower E, and A string on my acoustic guitar just for fun. And then just very, very basically. I never come close, and i never will, and that doesn't matter. But, everytime i look at these covers i'm feeling some compensation for my inabillaty. Thanks, Stephan
Oh god, we have to make pop great again. They put so much thought and work into songs back then. Even the most, at first, "silly sounding" songs had such rich and memorable stuff in them. And, as always, amazingly played!
This is why I don't entirely get the disco backlash. Disco had guys like Rutger Gunnarsson, James Jamerson, and Bernard Edwards playing sick stuff on real 4-string basses. Today's computerized dance music doesn't have any feel by comparison.
I am guitar player, lately ive been listening a lot to ABBA then i saw your videos,it inspired me to purchase my own bass and learn ABBA songs as much as i could.. Thank you.
Looked like you just really enjoyed nailing that one. Disco gets constantly underrated. There were some good players doing cool stuff that made that music work.
This is amazing. So much more there than what I thought. They were a brilliant band, and you've played it so cleanly. Cant wait to dive in and follow your lead.
I've just discovered your channel today! I am a massive ABBA fan, and find that almost all the bass lines are far more complex than people think. Money money money has some great movements.
Hello Troy! I am just a beginner bassist. You are one of the bassists that I admire and idolize here on UA-cam. Your ghost notes are god-tier. Your playing style greatly influences me to practice more on my ghost notes. I hope someday I can play on your level too. Please stay healthy and continue to upload awesome bass videos. Keep on inspiring beginner bassists like me. Thank you, cheers!
Thank you for the kind words. I tried to capture as many of the nuances as I could, but I know I missed a few things. I have to say, it was among the most challenging bass lines I've ever worked on. A real work of art.
TJH3113 I also recently learned to play this great Rutger Gunnarsson bass line (a little bit differently than how you play it, but that’s all in the interpretation) and I would also have to say that it’s one of the more challenging bass lines I’ve learned in my 30 years of playing. Bernard Edwards is another great bassist from the disco era, who also has some that will challenge anyone willing to attempt to master them. I love your channel, and from what I can tell, you and I must be close in age and grew up being influenced by some of the same bassists.
Excellent cover, as usual! I was born in 1958 and was into music at an early age, so before rock/pop evolved into hard rock.metal/etc., I enjoyed the Beatles, Monkees, Neil Diamond, Grass Roots, Simon and Garfunkel, the psychedelic bands, yadda yadda. Then came Hendrix, LedZep, etc. I totally loved and still love 70's hard rock bands and most of the early heavy metal bands. But, I also never lost my enjoyment of pop songs, and still haven't. A good tune is a good tune, period. ABBA was produced so well and talk about hooks. I have loved this song since the first time I heard it. It hit #1 in the spring of 1977 and it will always remind me of playing ski-ball at an arcade in Myrtle Beach after graduating high school and heading south for my "last" summer vacation before entering the real world lol Happy you covered this, I, too, never realized all that was going on. Now I love this song even more :)
reading the comments and replies TJH leaves, he just seems like a solid dude. really good bassist too, would be honored to have a guy like this in my band.
What a great song and cover! So many of ABBA's songs have deceptively simple sounding lines. I love that you've highlighted the nuances here with your usual excellence. If I've said it once, I've said it a hundred times... The 70s was a fantastic decade for bass players!

very well played with personal additions and feeling (I try this too). I like this line very much, too. The outstanding bass-lines are one of the secret ingredients of the ABBA-sound that is unique... Its magnificent how much this playing fit into the song... "One of us" same thing...
Thanks a lot! Though I try my best to play each song as closely as I can to the way it was written and recorded. Any "personal additions" are unintentional. Yes, I did "One of Us" as well and I think that bass-line is just as good, if not better, than this one. Thanks and take care.
Man, there is a lot going on here that you don’t pick up without examining it. I’ve come to appreciate this quality in a song though. The line just drives the song so well that you don’t notice it, but you surely would notice it’s absence. Great job as usual Troy!
I caught the bass the day i heard it. True appreciation for Gunnerson. This guy does an AWESOME job!!! Props!!! For all that don't know...all it takes is one good song to realize the bass is what carries the entire tune. Cheers!
Finally a video of yours I can watch, thanks to UA-cam. The last one was blocked in many European countries (I tried a couple tricks, and while I could watch it unregistered, I couldn't log in with my account). Awesome vintage style tone out of the Spector. Quite a busy bass line, it's a joy to listen to you playing it so effortlessly.
Once again I find myself watching your every move on this fabulous presentation. Lots of precision and timing going on here. While I can't yet do that [yet], it has helped me create a beginner's level interpretation. Thanks!
Only true artists and musicians know what ghost notes are, and to be honest you got many of them interpreted very well. Hats of to your study and your effort(s).
great playing !!!! , im learning how to play this song and is so amazing the richness of the whole line with a lot of resources.gracias and greetings from Spain amigo.
Great job. Abba's bass lines can be quite underrated. People tend to get lost in the notion that its "disco". It may be of the era but some of the lines are as catchy and melodic as any you hear today. Just doesnt incorporate the crutch of 5 strings. :) Check out the bassline in their song "Money, Money, Money" . Some tasty chops there! reminds me of McCartney. Love your videos.
I didn't think you'd get the C natural at 3:08. There's also a long list of little details you've revealed to me in this cover. Each one is a precious musical gem.
Disco music brought the bass guitar into prominence and made it the focus of most of the songs. The Bass has always been the driving force of any song.
Jimmy Weatherly? I had to think hard about that one and I would hardly call them "lessons", but I'm grateful if you took anything useful away from them. It's great to hear that you've kept playing, you had that nice Pedulla back then. Take care!
Goomby is fascinated by this tune being your number 3 of all time. We all hate this song, we've all always loved this bassline. Goomby approves of the pop pull.
I always revisit your videos.. And is so nice see how you are enjoying playing this tune... Music is a blessing! I really have you as an idol! Your videos always helped me learning... mainly Rush covers.. that are the ones I most watch.
My mate plays guitar with Abbamania, do lots of gigs in UK. I always thought the bass would be pretty straightforward for ABBA, it is, but it's pretty cool.
This is a fantastic cover! Like your other ABBA covers you play them very well and in keeping with the original feel which many bass covers of ABBA do not! Love ya work!
Troy, I am loving your choice on covering this..... the expression phrase starting on 3:00 to 3:12 is simply superlative of an era long gone..... I love your playing sir..... Thank you for inspiring me even further...... Rush On !!!!
3:00 to 3:07 = Amazing. Love the 4 left-hand fingers go down the one string @ 3:02, then that 'high-low-high-low' between your index and ring fingers at 3:06. It all happens quickly, but it 's brilliant.
Awesome bass track, and fantastic band. Yeah, I didn't listen to this stuff in the 70's either; mostly Allman Brothers, Steppenwolf, Grand Funk, Nugent, Kiss, Deep Purple, etc. But what a great bassist in Rutger Gunnarsson, very cool that you mentioned it and posted this video.
Every time i hear that bass make me want one,.. It truely has a Unique Sound and its good,... Of corse it has alot to do with the hands thats play'n it,.. Love it,..
Well, the preamp I had put into it really transformed the way it sounds. When I first got the bass I wasn't really happy with it. It's true that the "hands" have something to do with how a bass sounds, but I think that phrase is overused. If you pick up another player's bass, you are going to be in the ballpark.
I Like that you posted this today , My dad loved Abba, He passed away earlier this year, and today was his birthday. Thanks
Aw...I hope the video brought you some pleasant memories. You have my sincerest condolences on the loss of your Father.
When I was a kid, this was a simple song to listen. When I grew up, this song is complicated to play. Amazing bass riff
Truth.
Never knew this song had a good bass riff until now
I was shocked and amazed myself.
The great Rutger Gunnarsson. one of the true greats. His timing , feel, syncopation and sheer inventiveness were amazing and you have matched him in every department. That Spector sounds fantastic too. What do you use amp wise?
P.S. , I think Tor Johnson approves too!

Bass lines make the song, IMHO
Just listen to zepp, rush, and the who
ABBA are great songwriters and musicians ..you don’t get to the top being lackluster...well some do I suppose..lol

Jimmy Weatherly? I had to think hard about that one and I would hardly call them "lessons", but I'm grateful if you took anything useful away from them. It's great to hear that you've kept playing, you had that nice Pedulla back then. Take care!
I love how accurate you are. You even got that one disputed note correctly at 3:09 which many argue was either unintentional or calculated ha :)
I try! Thanks for noticing. For whatever reason, the note fits.
Great playing, full round sound. Superb!
Thank you very much Daniel.
Excelente! Tambien pude despues de varias semanas tocarla tal cual a la original y es un deleite cada vez que la toco.
¡Muchas gracias! ¡Impresionante! Es un placer jugar, ¿no?
Sound of bass makes me nostalgic....such a sweet instrument
I’m glad you like it. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment.
My favorite bass line!
It’s one of mine too!
Goomby is fascinated by this tune being your number 3 of all time. We all hate this song, we've all always loved this bassline. Goomby approves of the pop pull.
Is this my #3? What's my #1?
Amazing Bass sound and Groove!!! Congrats
Thanks a lot!
@@TJH3113 best Bass cover of this song here!
MASTER!!!! 👏👏👏👏👏
Thank you! Cheers!
Simply amazing, Thank you.
Thanks so much Armando!
I always revisit your videos..
And is so nice see how you are enjoying playing this tune...
Music is a blessing!
I really have you as an idol!
Your videos always helped me learning... mainly Rush covers.. that are the ones I most watch.
That's cool.
Thank you so much for the very kind words.
Remarkable job holding down one of the best bass lines of all time.
Thank you very much, Phil.
Hey man. Thanks for your help. This one took me nearly 3 years and I still don’t have it down like you do. Cheers.
J
As always, it's my pleasure. This was a tough one... and there's still things that I might do slightly differently.
Thank you! @@TJH3113
Just found this ! Awesome!
Welcome aboard! This is one of my personal favorites. I'm glad you liked it too.
That’s brilliant you even put in the bum C note at the end .. 👏
The Devil is in the details!
The drums on the song is beautiful as well.
Truth!
My mate plays guitar with Abbamania, do lots of gigs in UK. I always thought the bass would be pretty straightforward for ABBA, it is, but it's pretty cool.
Very cool. I'm sure they stay pretty busy.
This is a fantastic cover! Like your other ABBA covers you play them very well and in keeping with the original feel which many bass covers of ABBA do not! Love ya work!
Wow, thank you!
Troy, I am loving your choice on covering this..... the expression phrase starting on 3:00 to 3:12 is simply superlative of an era long gone..... I love your playing sir..... Thank you for inspiring me even further...... Rush On !!!!
I listened to that part again, and even for a ABBA song or any other, it is truly badass....
Wow, thank you!
BEAUTIFULLY DONE
THANK YOU SIR
You are without a doubt freaking awesome!
Aw, thanks a lot.
3:00 to 3:07 = Amazing. Love the 4 left-hand fingers go down the one string @ 3:02, then that 'high-low-high-low' between your index and ring fingers at 3:06. It all happens quickly, but it 's brilliant.
Yes, such a great bass-line.
Thanks and I agree!
Great job, and demonstrating that 'just pop music' can have a lot to it
Thank you.
This is one of my favorite bass lines ever, thanks for this cover you are also really good playing the bass really on point :D
That’s great to hear! Thanks so much, I’m glad you liked it. Take care!
Love all your work, but this is amazing! Such great movement that really propels the song! Great job!
Thank you so much!! It's one of my personal favorites as well. I'm glad you liked it.
Excellent cover!!!

Excellent job as always!
Thank you, as always.

Me too
I hope to learn how to play bass someday. This inspires that goal.
I truly hope you do!
