I've seen this anime and the original comics hundreds of times,
but I'm sure this is the one of the best episode for me.
And the other two episodes haven't come out yet!!!!

    "I'm nothing but average"
This breaks my heart because I think every athlete who played some level of competitive sports has had this moment where they realize that he or she is just average.
But Tanaka's mentality feels like a shout-out to all athletes. The world is moving forward. You can wallow in your shortcomings or give every ounce of energy you have to overcome them.

Y'know, I just realised something pretty cool, despite it seeming kinda... random, for lack of a better word?
When you really think about it, Oikawa and Tanaka struggled in very similar ways, despite being in different positions of skill, personality, etc.
Oikawa was looking at a goal he saw far above him in Kageyama, Ushikawa... "geniuses." This kept him down.
For Tanaka, he looked at his team for comparison, to declare himself "nothing but average." This kept him down.
But how do they work through it, in the end?
Oikawa understands that if he doesn't keep pushing, then he may never see his talent bloom. He'll never truly know whether he was good enough. But if he does, then so long as he believes it, that day will come.
Tanaka understands that, while he may be "average" right now, that's no reason for him to stop pushing. As long as he keeps trying until he can, then he will.
Both prove it to themselves in those very same matches. From Oikawa's long set, to Tanaka's cross spike, I'd like to believe those were the moments they began to evolve even further as players.

Tanaka's final sharp angle shot didn't just come out of nowhere -- ever since he saw Bokuto's sharp angle from summer training camp, he has been practicing it! There were several scenes in previous episodes of Tanaka imitating Bokuto's arm swings and trying it in practice games -- he has prepared for this moment! This episode never fails to get me cry I relate so much to Tanaka's frustration from time to time and his monologue just saves me from falling deeper into bad feelings.

That is one of my favorite details in rewatching Haikyuu, way back in season 2 when he saw that cut shot from Bokuto, he loved it so much and he's been trying it and failing a lot. I think he hit it once but it did not have as much power and authority as it just did in this moment. That's how you do character writing, development and building towards an epic moment and it was all happening in the background. Haikyuu is everything!

Another fun fact about Tanaka. He is the only player who has played every single minute of every single game for Karasuno starting from the practice match against Aoba Josai in Season 1 Episode 6-7 to this match. If you're curious about the rest of the starting players:
Nishinoya and Asahi re-joined the club after the Aoba Josai practice match.
Daichi got subbed out due to injury vs Wakunan
Kageyama got subbed out vs Johzenji (nosebleed) and Shiratorizawa (Fatigue)
Hinata got subbed out for Narita vs Johzenji (because Suga was the setter)

This is my favourite Tanka episode. He had so much character building in this episode especially when he saw the strength in Daichi, Asuma, and Suga's eyes after hearing the slander against the team and thinking they were not taking it seriously. Also How even when he thinks he is just average and is down how he decides to get back up and never give up.

Episode 16 is a freaking journey. Seeing Tanaka down was a real shocker, didn't realize how important his attitude on the court was until I saw him almost break this episode. Nishinoya and Tsukki get so much slack this episode from reactors who are non volleyball players, but they just did their job perfectly here like Sarah said. From hinata to the third years to the second years reminding everybody that Tanaka was the only one who didn't leave the team - all amazing moments but Tanaka's mental toughness is craazyyyyyyyy. " Once you fall, the only way to go is back up" - Great mindset!!!!!!!!! Kanoka also Lydia, that Naruto run by Tanaka 👍👍👍👍

One of my favorite lines in Haikyuu because hard work beats talent every time. It's just so relatable because if you're just average and seeing all these freaks of nature around you, the only option you have to keep up with them is to show up time and time again which I think Tanaka embodies. It's also represented in Oikawa's line in S2E24 "Instinct is something YOU polish, talent is something you MAKE bloom."
Anyone has the ability to go above and beyond and it's inspiring scenes like this that really drive that message home.

Thing are so tight and we're working so hard, I manage several people and I care so much about them bu I was getting burnt out, I slipped so far into depression couldn't stop thinking about suicide... No one could guess I'm always smiles and positivity.
I wanted to give up, I felt worthless and admitted to myself I'm just average how did I even get promoted. Haiykuu and it's many points on perseverance echo in my head, and this scene rallied me not give up and to push forward, focus on things I could control to improve my mental state. Push my self and be the strength for my team. When I watch this I empathize so much, I feel like I experienced the same.

He may not have the raw size or power that Asahi has, but he's already developing a more diverse skill set, and definitely has the mentality for it. She as someone truly understanding Volleyball making so many correct calls before they happen, speaks of how realistic these scenes are. And also props to her for noticing that many details, remembering all the names and understanding so many concepts that were only hinted at. However when you find out that he did take Tanaka's feelings into consideration and KNEW that Tanaka's mental toughness will see him through.

Tanaka has been practicing that shot ever since he saw Bokuto do it during the summer training camp, and the fact that THIS is the moment where he finally nails it, at this crucial point in the match, after everything that happened leading up to it, really just perfectly encapsulates Tanaka both as a person and what he means to the Karasuno team.
