    Fun fact:
During WW1 and WW2 British Admiralty tended to give captaincy of destroyers to the most Batshit insane Naval officers we had
If you were patient and calm you got carriers , Cruisers , subs ,battleships and Battlecruisers
If you were a modern day pirate you got a destroyer
This lead to several cases of Destroyer crews suddenly getting the urge to board and loot enemy vessels
So this ends up in cases of British destroyers circling enemy ships like sharks waiting for there chance to bring back the good old days of the Age of Sail

They didn’t just circle enemy ships either.
After the Americans joined and got their shit together in the pacific, the Britts started preying on them hoping to take the ice-scream rations for themselves.
The Americans, of course, figured out that when you are sending large waves of planes from your aircraft carriers, sometimes a plane has to ditch in the sea before making it back home. And having a bunch of British destroyer pirates circling them like sharks and holding their precious pilots for ransom was preferable to having actual sharks circling the pilots.
      So good deal all around

I kind of like the idea that the imperials are basically switching roles the rebels, the imperials are now the insurgents and the rebels are now the government. It would be a pretty interesting see the imperials adopting the rebels mentality and and way of doing things when it comes to fighting the new Republic. Pretty subversive in a way despite the imperials being the villains of the story. I'm hoping Disney sticks to that, but I don't have much confidence in them.

Idk, the empire is a former religious dictatorship breaking apart while the new republic is a democracy reestablishing itself after a (on the grand scale) short period of extremism.
Essentially you have a very well equipped military that got broken up into smaller forces that may or may not ally with each other, while a large galactic government slowly gets up to speed on (re)building a military and things.
Remaining Star Destroyers and bases would be hidden to protect them while the new republic would have to deal with raids by Gozanti's and other smaller craft.
Contacts between former imperial splinters would be much more like medieval feudal lords fighting each other.

Remember using a suicide pill to avoid capture is not necessarily an act of fanaticism, in the case of imperial personnel they have probably been told their entire lives that rebels are insane terrorists and that a quick death for the Empire is preferable to what the rebels will do to them if they're taken alive (and If it's Saw Gerrera's band we're talking about, they're probably not even wrong)!
The fact that torturing captives is totally what the imperials would do if the roles were reversed just makes it easier to convince them that is what will happen.
In the case of that Imperial captain on the prison ship especially. A bunch of unstable, mutinous clone troopers (well known as some of the most hardcore fighting men in the galaxy), are threatening to essentially torture the info they want out of him. Choosing death by shock capsule may have been as much due to fear of what the clones were going to do as it was dedication to the Empire.

I'd argue that the Gozanti is one of the imperial navy's more practical ships; it fills an adaptable role that can see it operating without waste in many theatres. It can operate as a freighter, an e-war vessel, fire support and often serves to carry a wing of fighters for peacekeeping and airspace enforcement. An incredibly useful support package coming in at a fraction of the price of the star destroyers the empire often fielded to wastefully fill such benign roles.

in starwars i'm inclined to think the term "cruiser" is a term that applies to any ship with specific characteristics. Basically, a Cruiser is any warship with a hyperdrive that is equipped primarily with full power cannons and full power shields, as opposed to Frigates with are purpose-built escort ships with primarily anti-fighter weapons or Corvettes ships built to civilian standards and equipped with minimal shields.
Star Destroyer is a term that reflects Cruisers built in a dagger shape with weapons orientated to give the ship max end on firepower (that is forward facing)
Star Destroyers are intended to be aggressive offensively orientated ships with extremely high firepower for their weight particularly for engaging targets in the forward cone of fire.
Its worth pointing out that if you have REALLY good end on Fire multiple Star destroyers can fire on a single ship with virtually every gun on board.
Types of Ships in Starwars therfore fall into these catagories:
      Star Cruisers:
Battle Cruisers (Includes Imperial Class STD)
Heavy Cruisers (Includes Victory STD and Venator STD)
Light Cruisers (basic low-capacity patrol ships like Carrack class and Gozanti) still equipped with military grade shields and anti-ship rated Blasters
Frigates (Equipped for pirate or anti-fighter defense)
Corvettes Civilian built, equipped with light shields, and low rated weapons.
Gunships, equipped only with rapid fire anti-star fighter blasters and sometimes torpedoes.
      Fighters:
Snub Fighters: Ships equipped with Hyper Drive, X-wing, Y-Wing, ARC-170, TIE Advanced
Defensive Fighters: Ships like TIEs, typically cheaper and lacking shields. Delta 7, Z-95 Head Hunter, V-Wing, Tie Interceptor.

To an extent, this adaptability is seen in the table top gamr armada. Gozantis with the right upgrades and officers can field 4 tie squadrens, making them a useful mini carrier. They can also equip various support upgrades, which can help bombers more reliably land their shots and deal damage against critical areas, disrupt the enemies ability to command their ships with slicing tools, or even resupply friendly ships with ammo- not to mention a repair bonus to any friendly ships its nearby- all depending on how you want to kit it up.

Another thing to consider is that these also weren't standard Gozanti cruiser captains. Both of the captains you used as examples were dealing with either sensitive data or critcal equipment and were trusted to be the kind of captains to Kamikaze if it came down to it. And the captain from Mando was also an extremist, as most Imperials in that sector at that time were, maybe not to the degree of those who would form the First Order but still. One thing to take note of the Gozanti captains that committed suicide was the circumstances of their mission. In The Bad Batch, those clones were going to Tantiss, a location that the Empire needed kept secret, so the officers sent there had to be willing to take their own life to defend it. And in Mandalorian, Moff Gideon's location needed to be kept a secret to prevent the Imperial Remnant from losing a vital asset. The captain of a gozanti would have known all the men under him intimately, the ship being so small and having such a small complement. And would have been used to deal with enemy combatants that often had equal if not better ships than them while far away from imperial support.
These people were probably the most competent officers in the empire by sheer natural selection, used to improvise and stay on long patrols on detached duty. Probably the only captains that had to not be too insufferable as a mutiny, unlike with an ISD, was a possible threat on their ships.

This analysis doesn't make any sense.
The reason that officer from Mando Season 2 was batshit crazy is because he was part of Gideon's remnant, they are all crazy, Season 3 mentions how infamous and extreme Gideon was. Him being the captain of a Gozanti does not suggest anything about other Gozanti captains either. Given that he had one of the tooth things, he was probably ex-ISB or something, as Mando S2 suggests that most remaining officers were not really military, but more COMPNOR/science division officers, who were crazy af.
The same goes for the Gozanti captain in TBB S2, he was not just any Gozanti captain, he was working for Hemlock and was clearly involved in the Advanced Science Division's work, not just some random officer. Therefore it once again makes sense why he had a suicide tooth thing, since he had very important information.

Yes, you are correct, but the point the video made is that captaining a Gozanti was a great opportunity for Imperials seeking to rise the ranks in the Navy. So you’d see a large number of ambitious and fanatical people occupying those positions, eager to prove their loyalty to the Empire.
The two Gozanti captains who took the quick way out happened to be involved in highly secretive operations, hence why they even had the zap pill things at all. Were it any other Gozanti, the captain might’ve been headstrong and fought against boarders, hoping to either die in the Empire’s service, or better yet to fend off the attackers and receive accolades, praise and reputation for his deeds.

    An easily overlooked detail.
Officially the Empire was efficient. So if a number of outposts needed a certain amount of supplies, they got exactly that. Which means transports, like the role the Gozanti sometimes served, often had free cargo space. Even if it's just one metric ton, some officers or even Stormtroopers would gladly pay for better rations and other luxury items. If they are not important enough for Holonet access, even entertainment would be welcome.
Not to mention equipment and supplies not endorsed by the Empire, but would make their lives easier.
Essentially the Captain of a Gozanti could make a lot of cash on the side during his career, even if he had to grease his crew and a few others at some spaceports.

In the Star Wars universe the ship term "Cruiser" is double used, one is the warship class. The other is a civilian term for a kind of ship that carries both cargo and passengers. But not enough of ether to really be a cargo freighter or a passenger liner. They have most or all of the amenities like med bay, galley, refresher, staterooms. No where as nice as a real Yacht.
A list in no particular order, Corellian Engineering Corporation Consular-Class Cruiser, Sienar Fleet Systems Guardian-class light cruiser, Republic Shipyards Jedi Justice Cruiser, Koensayr Manufacturing ILH-KK Citadel-class civilian cruiser, Kuat Drive Yards KDY security cruiser, Sienar Fleet Systems Guardian 344-class light cruiser 'not the same as the last one', Tipoca City engineering Type-22 Neptune Light Cruiser, Padawan Academic Cruiser, The Jedi Cruiser from the Old Republic era, Nihil Spider Cruiser, Sienar Fleet Systems Warden-class light cruiser and we could go on.

It could be that the captain from mandalorian was one of those who dealt with these super secret black ops type missions like transporting clones to secret bases and had fallen under Gideon as he gathered resources for his own cloning projects.
Theres probably a massive difference in imperial remnants where you get a garrison of soldiers who were posted in some remote region basically on guard duty and on the other hand you have officers whose projects are so secretive that they have major assets that are safe from the new republic, and now those two groups have to work together as the core military has been dismantled.

Whilst the role that destroyers would do are taken up by all the corvettes and frigates.
But Star Wars has done in abundance was to throw away sizes as a measure of a ships' class.
The Guardian-class light cruiser is a mere 42 m long, whilst the suspiciously Nebelon B frigate looking "Mercy" medical frigate was...2000 m long.

You have given good reasons for the behavior of these ship commanders.
In the legends, for example in the X-Wing novel "Bacta Pirates", it was described that the partners and families of imperial traitors, deserters and defectors could and were executed as punishment.
So these partners and families were hostages who ensured that the ship crews remained "loyal".
This practice was described as a standard procedure, or at least gave the impression that it was.
Even after the fall of Coruscant to the Rebel Alliance, when the Empire had lost access to virtually unlimited resources and supplies and had to budget its troops, this was practiced.
So the suicide of the captains was perhaps less fanaticism than protection of families and partners.
    The Nazis called this "Sippenhaft".
From 1933 onward, the Nazis employed “Sippenhaft” (family liability punishment) sporadically as a repressive measure against relatives of opponents of the regime.
It served to stoke fear in the populace.

Want to add to what you said, there are different categories of ships. But to keep it very basic, there is Light, medium/standard jack of all trades, and your heavy cruisers were closer to a Battleship, but then this would have subcategories.
To put it simply Medium Cruisers were heavily armed, but were not as fast as a light cruiser but not as slow as a Battleship. There also comparable to a jack of all trades since it is often utilized for conversion to be a heavier armed, lightly armed serving more as an escort vessel with the appropriate amount of anti-starfighter fire.
The Gozanti however is a Heavy Cruiser Carrier. It has weaponry that is comparable to a battleship or early dreadnoughts. But the capability of a light carrier.

One thing that never made sense to me was how a military structure could simultaneously be so filled to the brim with corruption yet so able to inspire such loyalty in certain places. On the one hand, that garrison commander from what I assume was the Bad Batch that showed up in this video who was so willing to undercut the rules for his own benefit with no oversight, and on the other a bunch of Gozanti Cruiser Captains and Stormtroopers who were willing to die even beyond the collapse of their own institutions.

    • @Fitch93

The Imperial Military was also Massive, it was entirely possible to have a decades long career as an officer and never really see much, if any, corruption. There was also the fact that what the corruption entailed was different from place to place. In some places, the "corruption" was that an officer was providing means above and beyond for their crews and/or soldiers. Just like it could also be an officer that was obviously lining their own pockets, it varied.

After watching this video, I'm thinking that the navy would assign a young officer to take command of the Gozanti, for the character tension of having to deal with a new CO. He should be a young fanatic, who wholly believes in the romanticized vision of the Galactic Empire, but I'd have to strip him of those views ... or force the crew the kill him, even though they like him, when the time comes to overthrow the Empire.

It doesn’t have to do with the ship. The ship is nothing special. It has to do with the mission there on. Also the outer rim wasn’t as sparsely populated as people say. Most worlds in the outer rim had millions or tens of millions of inhabitants at least. And it wasn’t that all uncommon to see populations in the billions. Some even had greater populations then core worlds. Take a look at Eriadu Or lthe pantora moon or narshada. The problem was then the outerim was very large and un tamed. Not un populated. Gozzonti class cruisers were not a special ship. And we’re usually assigned to no body’s. Seeing as there were the most commen ship in the empire.

Also, in practice, the role of "oversight" was effectively assumed by the Imperial Security Bureau who would have monitored and kept files on all Imperial officers and politicians (not to mention most of the Galactic population), particularly those stationed on remote planets. After all, the officer featured in the Bad Batch who was running a protection racket was essentially embezzling Imperial funds.

The gozanti is a versatile ship, it could do escorts as well as patrols, conduct reconnaissance as well as serve both as a troop transport add cargo ship and even as a heavy lifter craft and escort carrier. What I think it's even more badass as a drop ship that can deploy troops all the while providing heavy fire support to ground forces it deployed. The vessel is very good for expeditionary style operations, The ship would have been far more formidable if the imperials put far more emphasis on adaptability and flexibility then firepower in overwhelming Force as well as more importantly put more trust in their subordinates as well as encourage personal initiative then contending with micromanaging them, and valuing political reliability at the expense of competence. I think what happened is that the officers assigned to command Star destroyers off intended to get them do to there social connections and political reliability, not do to competence, resulting in the more competent officers being passed over for such postings and assigned to these types of vessels more often than not. The result is that these kind of arrangements help the Empire collapsed due to their Capital ships often not being commanded by the best, but also the more competent and cunning as well as the more ruthless and fanatical survived it's collapse as a result and had the right type of ships and expertise, and experiences that would leave them very well position them to menace the new Republic asymmetrically.

So... They're basically the Star Wars scifi equivalent to a WW1/WW2 destroyer compared to the battleship/aircraft carrier equivalent in the Imperial Star Destroyer.
That said, considering that IRL destroyer captains and their crews tended to be a bit insane, this makes sense. I mean, just look at the Battle off Samar. A handful of destroyers held off what was essentially the entire Japanese Navy and were fighting ships whose turrets weighed more that their entire ship. The Japanese thought that the destroyers they were fighting were cruisers because they couldnt comprehend such small ships putting up such a fight.
