    I feel like rivals of aether should go in the list since unlike smash the characters are pure creativity with each character not being anything like the other at all. It feels like playing an entirely different game at times. And the hitstun being high but the DI also being high makes ur combo trees massive while allowing the opponent to get out of any combo of their good enough.

      I don't even like platform fighters that much, and I still can't believe how interesting most of the RoA characters are, specially Sylvanos. Very strong BlazBlue vibes.

    As a late joiner in the 2d fighting community, it always struck me as weird when melee caught shit from Fgc peeps. Being hella technical is always sick and melee is by far the most technical of the genre

      It’s 100% a community vs community culture issue. The fgc and smash scene grew completely independently of each other anyway.

    TL;DR: BlazBlue Centralfiction. I admittedly have a 25 year gap from paying attention to fighting games until Strive's soundtrack just caught my ear and dragged me back into things last year. And since then I've checked out a lot of games old and new. BBCF seems like it's kind of at the peak of the mountain. Incredible variety of interesting characters? Check. Gorgeous, meticulous art for both the sprites and backgrounds. Check. Banger soundtrack? Check. Great story. (I'm still working through BBCS's story, but so far I love how BB does things, so that's a check, I imagine.)
    However, the thing that really impresses me is the mechanics. Every character has their own unique and often bonkers mechs. It's incredibly fun to watch. However, the base game mechs are the layer that elevates everything. Having an independent Barrier bar means no wasting meter on faultless defense like in GG. That frees things up so much. The Burst/Overdrive system is also ingenious. Being able to save up for a defensive burst or spend part or all of it on OD and then use OD for either defense or offense...so much flexibility. Getting rewarded in a meaningful but not overpowering way for attacking (Active Flow), but not getting directly punished for defending (as with GG's R.I.S.C) means you can choose the right times to attack and defend instead of rushing to one or the other. And the damage feels just about right to me. Even high damage characters in BB are still going to need probably at least three interactions to take down the opponent, usually many more. None of this 60% health gone on startup stuff like Strive has (I enjoy Strive very much, don't get me wrong.) And this is just the stuff my novice FG brain is aware of. The subtleties of each character probably could fill up books.
    Watching BBCF matches between top players is often some of the most incredible ballet (or maybe Cirque du Soleil is more accurate) that I see in any fighting game. No two players play the same even when the winning tactics are obvious for a character. Furthermore, no character feels out of the fight nor do they feel completely cheesy. Easier characters can hold their own against the top tiers. And, something that I feel like almost never actually happens in games, the more difficult characters actually reward the effort you put into them. If you can master Carl or Kokonoe or Rachel, you can destroy people, but you're taking a lot of risks when you can't keep the execution up. Yet, you can still win against those guys. Izanami, averaging all accounts I've seen, is the top character in the game. Lots of people think she's toxic because of Ribcage. But if you've seen an Izanami that doesn't know exactly what they're doing, they will drop combos left and right and get wiped. She's hard to play, and she pays out hard. However, as BananaKen, the best player in NA currently says about the brutal matchup with Izanami: "You can still win by using the game's fundamental systems correctly." So, you can beat a top tier by managing your barrier, burst, OD, meter gain, throw tech, and everything else. And they can't beat you if they don't do the same.
    While it all seems complicated, I think they've managed to actually create a canvas you can make your own beautiful art with. And, even better, all the individual, separated game systems give you the flexibility of layers you would have with Photoshop. As I saw one person say "It's a fighting game lover's fighting game." True, but I fell in love with it before I knew what any of this stuff I wrote above even meant. That's probably because it's the extension of the hands and souls of some amazingly creative people behind the fightstick.

    My man this is hands down my favorite video for a couple of reasons. Firstly, because many FGC content creators try to define what objectively makes a good fighting game, but your among the few in the FGC content creation space that acknowledges that the answer to what makes a good fighting game is going to change depending on who you ask, EVEN among pro players. For instance, they are are pro players that only like fighting games that are primarily footsie based, so games like Street Fighter and KOF are games that they are most likely going to love and hate airdashers like BBCF, GGXRD, and MBTL. Personally, I prefer airdashers over purely footsie based ones, since the extra movement gives you more ways to approach the opponent during offense and neutral, but I'm aware it's an opinion that definitely isn't shared by anyone. Though this fact isn't surprising to me, since fighting games are still art and art IS subjective, and what is good or bad is going to VARY from person to person.
    The second reason why this video stroke a chord with me is the fact that what you like in a fighting game are almost the EXACT same things as me, since the number one thing I also value in the fighting game is unique characters that set them selves apart from each other, whether that be in terms of movement speed, defense, and ESPECIALLY game plan and unique system mechanics ONLY available to that character. It's one of the main reasons that I didn't like DragonBallFighterZ, since when that game launched the game felt very homongenized, and in that way didn't feel like an Arc System works Title at all, especially when you compare DBFZ to Arc System Work's earlier titles like GGXRD and BBCF where the characters were JUST AS complicated as the universal system mechanics themselves. And it's not just a problem I have with Arc either, since even more newer titles from other developers suffer from this issue I have with Homogenization, with games like the new Melty Blood, and even Tekken 7 suffering from this exact same problem( infamous FGC Content creator Aris himself admits that Tekken 7 is homongenized). But your among the few notable FGC content creators to state this. Currently, games like BBCF, GG+R, and SC6 are my favorite fighting games since all three have what I'm looking for, with BBCF being my number one, since that currently is the most unique fighting game currently out on the market IMO.

    I always kind of liked fighting games from a very safe distance until BlazBlue CF pulled me right into the FGC in 2020. The fact that Drives are technically normals (usually) does SO MUCH to make the game exciting in all levels of play.

    Touhou Scarlet Weather Raphsody and its Expansion to me is the best fighter. Look into it and tell me that the game lets you express yourself far more than any of the games you mentioned.
    It even has some absolutely juicy mechanics these mainstream fighters dont know, but wish they had. Like blocking high or low incorrectly wont put you in a combo, instead they damaged your mana. No mana = Guard break. Up down mixups dont matter like they do in most games, but it does matter for your resources, letting players make mistakes with blocking for a cost.

    Tekken 7, specifically season 2, has to be the best fighting game I ever played. I am a Tekken nutcase, with about 2k hours. The expression and creativity seen in so many regions and players is insane, each with their own movement, style, and character of choice. The knowledge checks, unique combo system, absolutely crazy mind games, AND THE ABILITY TO WORK AROUND EVERYTHING is what makes Tekken so great. The reason why I say season 2 is better specifically, is because the introduction of new characters that objectively ruin the game, as well as overall damage scaling. Yes, there are about 4 (?) top tiers in season 2 (jin, akuma, geese, drag), but even then, it changes nothing about it being the best. Love it to pieces. Keep up the good work Brendan!
    Edit: I forgot to include Steve on that list of season 2 top tiers, mb lol

    DBFZ definitely has a problem with it's characters being too similar(Even besides the fact a third of the roster is alternate versions of other character), but all the season 3 chars(Besides Kefla ig) have been super unique, and I think DBFZ's sequel will have a lot more of an interesting roster.

    • @BrendanMushi

      Kinda, they have something interesting about them but they all still follow the same formula, playstyle, blockstrings, & combos as the rest of the cast.

    • @foreverfirebird5712
      @foreverfirebird5712 2 роки тому

      @@BrendanMushi I mean it's a team game that is very successful at making switching chars viable. If every character were super unique and hard to learn on top of tag mechanics, the game lose that and would suffer the same fate as Tekken Tag 2. And a lot of the experimentation and creativity comes from unique things characters can do when paired together rather than what they can do alone. For example, my team gives Vegito an SKD after his lvl 1, which is not possible normally. But there's a lot crazier shit like Gogeta 4/16/Piccolo team which makes Gogeta's unique insant kill really easy to get at the cost of a team that isn't as strong in the traditional ways.

    • @BrendanMushi
      @BrendanMushi  2 роки тому

      Heavily disagree, MvC series has completely unique characters in a team setting. DBFZ characters all have different ways of accomplishing the same task. 2M > 5M > jump cancel to an air combo > air 2H > homing dash > sliding knockdown > oki is literally every characters bnb & block strings are structured around stagger pressure or using the same 3 types of assists (lariat assists, beam assists, & ki blast assists) to go for cross ups or high lows. Neutral is centered around using superdash or hit confirming ki blasts/beams using vanish or an assist. Every character is more or less the same. The game is incredibly homogenized.
