@@usaskjock To each his own. But I honestly can't put Suikoden 1 over 2, just because I love how huge 2's scope was. And I'm a sucker for a good brother-rivalry storyline!!!
It's great how respectful and friendly your viewer comments are compared to other gaming channels. Many comment sections of list videos are filled with jerks who criticize choices in mean ways. Your fans are the best.
is not about other channel choices is like they never live in the 80-90s, or seems they didnt play many important present ones too, so yeah they sure deserve all that hate since those videos seems done by a 20 year old dude that casually play games.
One thing I love about this list, is that it makes me think, "ooo, if I ever get the chance, I should play this." you've added a few more games that I'm gonna have to try Mike
I wish I loved the game but it’s one of those artistic type of games where it clicks for some people and not others. I see the merit in the game but it just doesn’t feel as amazing as everyone else says it does to me so I didn’t enjoy it very much
This overview was nothing short of amazing and eye opening, as I have not played at least 75% of the titles presented and so got my work cut out for me. Thanks a lot!
This is without a doubt one of the best gaming list videos I’ve ever seen. Watching this while drinking my coffee made my morning, thank you. 90’s kid for life
I really appreciate how all of your videos are passion projects. Your #1 and #2 are also my #1 and #2, and they can switch places on any given day, but they have never wavered from those positions since 1997, and they never will.
You guys are so so so underrated. Your Channel should be a must-watch for anyone who loves JRPG and RPG, especially for Final Fantasy fans. Hope this countdown helps you reach a bigger audience. best of luck in the future. cheers!
well its not that hard for gamers to do their own research. ive literally looked up the list of all games made by any company i see. i also watched the videos showing all games for each individual console. then when i see something that looks cool i look up more videos on those games. so quite frankly there arent so many rpgs everyone should have atleast seen some clips on them all. sure we cant play every game ever but people can look into them all a little. edit: new consoles and with steam and all the junk out there no one can look at it all. but like systems like ps1 ps2 or even ps3/360 era and before you can look at videos of all games ever for them. pc is different cause theres alot of unknown companies just piling trash into the stores. older consoles though you can watch the videos on all games ever for the systems.
Mine are: 1. Xenogears - This game changed my life. 2. Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild - I love Zelda games, but felt this is the first (and only to date) that has done it right in 3D. 3. Final Fantasy 8 - I was massively addicted to this game when I was a teenager, I love the customization and crafting. 4. Victoria 2 - speaking of game addictions, I have over 2000 hours on this game. 5. Dwarf Fortress - and I've played this one for more than 24 hours in a row. 6. Witcher 3 - brilliant RPG, this is the best modern RPG, and the direction I'd love to see for Xenoblade Chronicles. 7. Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2 - The pinnacle of platformers to this day, and the best game of the Wii generation. 8. Dragon Quest 5 - Start off as a kid, then meet your wife, then have kids and take them into battle. This game marks one of the most creative stories in RPG history. 9. Chrono Trigger - to this day, still perfection, I love the scripted battles, the simple and concise battle system that allows for complex outcomes 10. Earthbound - The game has so much charm! If you play it, do yourself a favour and print out the pamphlet/brochure guide to play along. 11. Rune Factory Frontier - On the Wii, this game was the one I played the most, probably 250 hours. IMO, still the best Story of Seasons/Stardew Valley style game to this day. 12. Terranigma - This game was a jaunt through history and science fiction, a great action adventure, and even better than Illusion of Time., 13. Fire Emblem Blazing Sword - 14. Crusader Kings 2 - I'm addicted to the multiplayer of this dynasty simulator. 15. Fire Emblem Genealogy of the Holy War - I first played this on a Fire Converter, in Japanese with a translation guide, literally the next year it came out on emulator! After I spent about 120 USD (like 220-300 today) on this one game. 16. Dragon Quest 4 - I loved the chapters and how the stories all spin together at the end, this game was the best in the series until Dragon Quest 5. 17. Dragon Quest 9 - Probably because of the hundreds of hours of multiplayer, but I loved this game. It also fixed all the problems with Dragon Quest 8 and had a better story. 18. Final Fantasy Tactics - It's FFT 19. Skies of Arcadia - This game is still beautiful to this day with its Dreamcast graphics. I love the concept of flying around, exploring floating islands in an airship. It's like a whole game taking place in Chrono Trigger's Kingdom of Zeal. 20. Faxanadu - This game has vertical worlds like Xenoblade, the first to do it, and I loved it as a kid. 21. Xenoblade Chronicles X - The prototype for Breath of the Wild, it'd be higher on my list, but it was on Wii U, and I didn't play it more. I loved this game enough that I suffered 100+ hours playing Wii U for it. 22. Final Fantasy 6 - This game was my favourite for a while when I was a kid. 23. Link to the Past - This Zelda game blew things wide open for gaming, legendary in its popularity, IMO the best Zelda game until Breath of the Wild. 24. Xenoblade Chronicles - This game is 25. Sid Meier's Civilization 2 - addicted as a kid, not much more to say. This was the best Civ game! 26. Super Mario Bros 3 - Still play this game every year, to this day. Biggest release in gaming history (maybe outside of Wii Sports) 27. FFII (FF4) - changed the way I look at RPGs, the music and production was fantastic. 28. Dragon Warrior 3 - Before FF4 changed what I thought RPGs could be, this one did it first. 29. Goldeneye 007 - I lost a lot of my teen years to this, still brought it out in University, and even after, all the way to the Wii. I know I missed a few, Mario Kart Wii and 8 Deluxe should be in there, same with SimCity 2000, and some others. Alpha Centauri, Master of Orion, Star Craft Brood War, but this is off the top of my head and I need to get back to work now :D
Great list as well. IMO Perfect Dark is better than Goldeneye 64 and Crusader Kings 3 is better than part 2. Some other great games: Dark Cloud, Shenmue, Yakuza series, Enderal: Forgotten Stories, Persona 5 Royal, Anno 1503
@@TVans-vs3gn I like the Anno games too. I wish I’d got more into Perfect Dark, I could see it was objectively better than GE, but I think maybe it was too close to the end of the generation. On CK3, it’s still too new to surpass CK2 for me. I haven’t played it nearly as much, and at the height of CK2 I was playing hours of multiplayer with a group, and we haven’t got that going with CK3 yet… funny thing is the group weren’t really big gamers, and this is one of the more complex games out there. Hopefully CK3 is more stable, as our multiplayer games would crash every 2-3 hours or so; I mean, we could start them over where we left off but the crash was probably memory related as we’d all have to reset the game each time it crashed. But from Paradox, Victoria 2 has always been my favourite, it’s the first one I got heavily into, and I still play it on and off to this day.
@@CRedd9830 Yeah, Skies will always hold a special place for me. Despite its old graphics, the game still looks beautiful to me. One of the oldest, if not the oldest, I feel that way about. While I really liked the N64 and PSX, Dreamcast is the first console where I felt the 3D graphics began to have some timeless looking games. Skies can be improved upon, for sure, but what’s there is still pretty to my eye. I love that section of the game where Vyse is stuck on an island, and then you’re jumping back and forth until he and Gilder meet up with Aeka and Fina. That was some great interactive storytelling and gameplay.
I grew up in the 90’s with a love for video games and an obsession with Squaresoft. It always brings a smile to my face to listen to people describe the nostalgia, the absolute joy, and profound affect these games had on shaping the adults they become. I throughly enjoyed the take and hope to see more!
The same thing happened with me with Red Dead Redemption. Despite having no interest in them before, suddenly I love Westerns after playing through that game. It just really makes you appreciate them. That is extremely powerful. It's a surprise hearing you had that same experience! I enjoyed the list and video so much.I got to relive a lot of what I love about many of these games. Thank you Mike. Probably the only games on this list I wouldn't put near my own personal top 50 is Demon Souls/Dark Souls, much the same way you dont put MMOs in your list, Soulsborne games and challenge based action combat games don't appeal to me.
I feel they are some of the best games ever made but that’s fair there are a lot of games I don’t like at all just because of genre. Not every genre has to appeal to everyone.
when you talked about chrono trigger, i litteraly started to cry because im also feeling a lot of pressure from my family to give up on my dreams to be a storyteller and i really love videogames, last month i tried to buy a SNES just to play chrono trigger, but i got scamed lol. i will play it on an emulator, thank you for the amazing video and for the final message, it really made my day! +1 sub
Amazing list. You have added so many games to my bucket list. Hearing this made me remember Legends of Legaia and Grandia 2 which are 2 old games that I love and left an impact on the type of person I am today.
Grandia 2 is such an amazing game! It was one of the first things I played on Dreamcast and I was not able to put it down until I was finished. Likeable characters, a story that can be both serious and light hearted with tons of charm, and super engaging combat system for a turn based game. I loved holding up an enemy action with a combo while hitting a cancel blow with the next character just to have enough time to let out a spell with. Criminally underrated hidden gem.
LEGEND OF LEGAIA BRO!!!! This game had a profound influence on me as a kid. I still think it's one of the most original, ingenius concepts for a game and story. And the music slapssssss
It might've been because I played them at the same time but I forever thought that Vagrant Story and Metal Gear Solid were spiritual siblings, I can't quite explain it but in my mind they were side by side in greatness... though it's obvious which one succeeded but in my mind Vagrant Story will forever be one of the most underrated games of all time.
As an English major, I appreciate how you put time into writing a script that makes your discussion of each game feel unique and meaningful. Also, freak. There are too many good games. And too many I haven’t played yet.
Never felt nostalgia this strong when i saw the mass effect part of your video. It is like remembering an old me, playing for the first time at ME, who is now dead and feeling grief as i am writing this now. Hearing Mass Effect music in the background was like earing the favorite music of my dead best friend. Im always saying this when i talk about videogame. There was my life before ME and an after.
This has inspired me to start writing a list of my own. It will be a long arduous process to arrange my top 50 in order but I will do my best. One thing is for sure. Final Fantasy Tactics stands as number 1 in my list for sure. I am also greatly enjoying the FFT state of the arc podcast. Thanks for all the hard work you put in your content. The passion and care put into each of your videos as a channel really reflect the love you have for video games as a part of storytelling media.
You just can't hear 'To Far Away Times' and not nearly tear up. Even the story behind it is just awe-inspiring. Such an epic way to not only end Chrono Trigger but to also end your video!
Damn Mike. We got very similar tastes. My top 20. 1. Final Fantasy 7 2. Final Fantasy 9 3. Chrono Trigger 4. Resident Evil 4 5. Metroid Prime 6. Dark Souls 7. Skies of Arcadia 8. The Witcher 3 9. Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time 10. Bioshock 11. Bloodborne 12. God of War 2 13. Resident Evil Remake 14. Resident Evil 2 Remake 15. Ninja Gaiden (xbox) 16. Dragon Quest 8 17. Uncharted 2 18. Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild 19. Red Dead Redemption 2 20. Dark Souls 3 Literally counting down the hours for Elden Ring. And am hoping it cracks top 10.
@@CRedd9830 thanks man. Well, with the exception of FF7, my top 10 are interchangeable. The cream of the crop in my opinion. But it's a sad thing how few know Skies of Arcadia. Might be the best JRPG world ever created. Brilliant game.
Honestly I’m playing through all the ff games right now and am currently at 9 but I didn’t really live 7 as much as most people. It easily has the best protagonist and a pretty good story but I just didn’t feel the pacing was very good and most of playable characters besides a couple weren’t very interesting. Currently I’d say ff6 is my favorite ff game then 7. So far I’ve felt the series was fifty fifty I like 2,4,6, and 7 but wasn’t a big fan of the others up to where I am
Damn. That was a great list mate. You are without a doubt, an amazing story teller. It never felt boring listening to you. If i was gonna say my top 25 that i just did real quick. It would be something like this: 1. Final Fantasy VII 2. Super Mario World 3. Devil May Cry 3 4. Final Fantasy IX 5. MGS 3 6. Sekiro 7. Nier Automata 8. Zelda Majoras Mask 9. Final Fantasy X 10. MGS 1 11. Warcraft 3 12. Morrowind 13. Zelda Ocarina of Time 14. Super Mario Bros 3 15. Xenogears 16. Persona 3/4/5.. (I can't choose. They all have their own qualites) 17. Final Fantasy Tactics 18. Bloodborne 19. Elden Ring 20. Hollow Knight 21. Katana Zero 22. God of War (2018) 23. Nier 24. Devil May Cry 1 25. Zelda Breath of the Wild
I love hearing the passion when people talk about their favorite games. It’s always so personal and interesting. This video was incredibly edited and engaging, as well. An all-around hit. If I may engage in a spot of narcissism, I’ll share my Top 10: 10) Rise of the Tomb Raider - Lara’s journey as a survivor hit its apex here, and I found a lot of inspiration for my own life here. 9) Splinter Cell: Conviction - Sam Fisher was always a favorite character, and this game channeled every aspect of its storytelling and design through the emotion of “anger,” which led to interesting results. 8) Batman: Arkham City - Every minute of the campaign is engaging and exciting. 7) Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order - A very recent game, but its tale of trauma and how it defines us really hit close to home for me. 6) Bloodborne - The best Soulslike ever made, I have many fond memories of parsing every aspect of its world. 5) Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time - Some of the most concise and compelling character arcs every put into a game narrative, coupled with flawless traversal mechanics. 4) Final Fantasy IX - Drenched in melancholy, yet somehow also carefree. This cast came together to tell the best FF story ever told. 3) Drakengard 3 - A tale of madness and sorrow, it tricks you into caring about its insane heroes before carefully weaving together a series of captivating finales. 2) NieR: Automata - A game that can’t help but make you think the whole through, fighting through its own depressing observations about existence before finding a message of hope. 1) NieR: Replicant - Long held as my favorite game since its original US release, I truly think these are some of the finest characters in all of fiction. Nier and Kainé are my personal favorite characters of all time, and its the melancholic world and story around them that takes everything to the top. My favorite story ever told, full stop.
@@zackeryparkerson ok for my list will always be inconsistent except for 4 games so here goes: . 10. Riviera - a visual novel-ish kind of rpg that have heavy arcade elements. The turn base combat is fun and the playhtrough is short yet replayable. 9. Deemo - this is a rhythm game that I can consider a masterpiece. Very heartwarming and inspiring. This is also the true 10/10 in this list if we will go for game stuff. 8. G Darius - the most atmospheric game I have ever played. The sense of dread from the invading giant mechanical fish and blasting them with "kamehameha" style of beam duel felt incredible. Soundtrack is one of my personal favorite along with Etrian Odyssey series. 7. Blaster Master Zero 2 - a unique twist on metroidvania. A platformer and a zelda view dungeon crawler at the same time that actually felt natural. 6. Megaman Zero 4/Luminous Avenger iX - I honestly cant pick between these two games but I love them for both the similarities they have as a game, and it is the thrill of platforming that are unmatched by other series. 5. Devil Survivor Overclocked - one of my newly played rpg. There are too many thing that can be too subjective in describing the game due to preference but there is one unique thing that I can always respect in the game, and that is the questions and decisions that can affect the outcome. Decisions felt like it truly matters in order to find an ending you want to achieve. 4. Etrian Odyssey 5 - this game is one of the most satisfying rpg I have ever played. The game is colorful, the music is relaxing, and most of all the game just wants you dead. 3. Yggdra Union - my longest favorite top game of all time. This game values a good decision making in combat and punishes you fairly for getting greedy but also rewards you in good execution. It had one of the most interesting way of showing a characters personality that is also up to your interpretation. For the character, Gulcasa is easily my favorite villain as he is the only antagonist who truly represents the power of friendship. 2. Blazblue Central Fiction - the fighting game that I felt like every character is a different game. Personality in the fight, skill ceiling, freedom of expression, stupidity, its just a plain very crazy fighting game that I can consider to be approachable. 1. Sora - my favorite game of all time is this game. The story of Sora a girl who was forced to fight for meaningless war in a world of dying gray planet found out that the earth and few scientist outside of war are actually trying to restore what the earth was once. Playing this game is one of the most painful thing I have ever did to my hand as it demanded me to learn how to properly move and dominate the screen. A shoot em up? An action game? A fighting game? I really cant describe what it is but soaring through the sky with your dash or shooting/slashing enemies in this game is something for me.... The story would also be more impactful if you played Suguri and understanding what the two did for the world always give tears to me.
@@zackeryparkerson sorry that it took hour for me to reply. Also honorable mention because I actually didnt play the series: Drakengard/NieR - very important to me for what it tells. Its also an amalgamation of my favorite things like post apocalyptic paradise(Land of the Lustrous, Etrian Odyssey, World End: Sukasuka), white-haired tragic protagonist(Blazblue), super fighting robots(Megaman Zero, Sora/Suguri 2, Gunvolt Luminous Avenger iX), and more. Edit. I also mentioned non games on this reply, hehehe
I'm so glad Ghost of Tsushima is here ! One of my favorite games ! A lot of people hate on it because it "didnt do anything new" but it was just a beautiful masterpiece.
I feel like people who make that complaint just didn’t like the game and have to come up with some reason for it rather than just realizing people have different tastes. The game was pretty amazing and the only thing I found it to do poorly was the open world as well as a lot of the side quests/collectibles
The criticism that it did nothing new is pretty justified. Just because you didn't mind it doesn't make it invalid. I wanted to love the game but was pretty disappointed by how generic and familiar it was. Don't know what I expected tbf
@@alecg.5638 See I absolutely adored it. I thought the opening cinematic was one of the best in video games so I became captivated by the story. The world was beautiful yet destroyed, a lot of times I don't connect with the main plot of a game but here I believed we were saving the island. The combat was especially a highlight to me, fluid yet strategic and ultimately satisfying. As you can tell, I loved the game. Definitely in my top PS4 games if not my number 1. Like everything though, it's not for everyone and I respect that.
@@theoneonly2406 I respect and relate to your enjoyment but my comment was mainly because I interpreted what you said as dismissing the argument that the game does nothing new. In retrospect I definitely overreacted and that's not at all what you meant. Personally, I was kept from agreeing with the glowing critical acclaim because the open world was too bare, the side content was filler and mediocre, and the open world activities were insanely repetitive and got old fast. It could've been a masterpiece if it didn't adopt such a dated and boring design philosophy. Other than that the combat and stealth were top tier and the story was really good, although I think it could've been better if the mongols were more complex villains, Jin's internal conflict was fleshed out better, and the story focused a bit more on the characters and their struggles as opposed to mainly big action spectacle. I think the story deals with some really interesting themes in a really interesting point in history but the skeleton of the plot is a bit weak as it mainly consists of "man we've got to weaken the mongol forces in this area!" I've talked for way too long but I hope I get my point across and I enjoy discussing things I'm passionate about with other people who share that passion
@@alecg.5638 Oh your good bro I like talking about game too and I'm pretty objective so I see the problems even if I loved something. I think for me I always wanted a samurai game since I was a kid, I played all the older games and they were good to me but never great. So when one of my favorite historical settings finally got a big triple A game I was overjoyed and definitely looked past the flaws it had. Sucker punch is making a part 2 I'm sure so I'm very curious to see where it goes, if it will try to take bigger risks and expand the story while giving the enemies more background to shine. Even Jin where I thought he was great a lot of people didn't like him and like you said probably because he wasn't fleshed out and had a backstory. They tried to focus on Jin's background in the DLC but too little to late. Would you give the sequel another shot or are you done with the franchise? I'm sure they will introduce a new protagonist.
Wow what a nice surprise! I'll dive into this in a bit. Just wanted to share my personal Top 10: 1. Suikoden 2 2. Final Fantasy Tactics 3. Witcher 3 4. God of War (2018) 5. Xenogears 6. Suikoden 1 7. 13 Sentinels 8. Valkyrie Profile 9. Final Fantasy XIV 10. Ragnarok Online (huge nostalgia glasses over this one)
It's tough for me to place in order so in no order my top 12: Bloodborne, Zelda ocarina of time, Ori and the will of the wisps, Resident evil 2 remake, Resident evil 1 remake, Ghosts of tsushima, Metroid prime, Metroid dread, Zelda breath of the wild, Final fantasy 7, Super mario odyssey, Devil may cry 5. There are so many more but here 12 of mine lol
Pretty good list. Your experience with FF7 awakening a desire to become a storyteller resonated with me. Many video games instilled the same yearning in me, alongside many films and books
Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver did that to me. I bought the game over the weekend back in 2000. I remember sitting in my Health class(boring as hell) after finishing all my work and started daydreaming, wishing I was at home playing Soul Reaver. Then I took out my pen and tried writing my own vampire story to pass the time lol. Then that evolved into me just trying to come up with my own ideas and concepts. But even to this day, I compare my works to Soul Reaver. If my opening doesn’t punch as hard as Amy Hennig did with the opening moments of Soul Reaver and command your attention within minutes....I’ve already failed lol.
My god.... Got down to the top 10 and i was sad you missed Terranigma............then it shows up. Awesome! Man this game moved my heart as a kid (i'm 41). Love it so much.
PC gaming really adds a lot of games outside of RPGs to my list. There would be a lot more strategy/simulation games in my top 50. 5. Civilization 4 4. Halo 2 3. Xenogears 2. Suikoden 2 1. Warcraft 3
Awesome editing and polish on this video of yours. Pretty flawless. The audio is wonderful as well, both in quality and mixing. Thank you for sharing this passion project with us.
Hey i might as well add in my list of favorite games, i hope somebody plays one of them and appreciates it as much as i do. 1. Legend of Dragoon 2. Chrono cross 3. Goldeneye 007 4. Resident Evil 4 5. castlevania: SOTN 6. L.o.z Ocarina of time 7. Jet force gemini 8. Max Payne 1&2 9. Silent Hill 1 10. Resident Evil 1 remake 11. Final fantasy 7 12. Chaos Legion. 13. Borderlands 1, 2, 3. 23. all of the Tenchu's 24. Fable 1. 25. Far cry 1(original pc version specifically)
shoutouts to tenchu. Although personally i'd just pick the first one, was way ahead of its time and was such a novel concept. I feel the subsequent games has a continuing decline, and other games started to do the concept better.
Final Fantasy VII was that surprisingly huge in scope for it's time that I thought I'd completed the game when I finished Midgar about 5--6 hours in. I thought Discs 2 and 3 were just extras.
Excellent list of excellent games, every one of them. Some surprises too! I couldn't imagine trying to make a list like this, and as you say, so many games could be interchangeable in their positions. I was really happy to see Terranigma up there though. Definitely one of my favorites as well and so underappreciated.
This to me is the gold standard now for how I'd like to see 'top ___ game of all time' going forward. It does what I have long hoped to see in gamers: an embracing of subjectivity and display of one's personality and history through a truly unique list of personal favorite experiences that vary over decades, consoles, and genres. Thank you for doing this and I hope to see these types of list more from folks in the future. Your channel is a gem of the many gaming channels out there.
I just played Chrono Trigger for the first time a few weeks ago and could not believe how good it was. The music, storyline, and ambition that game brought to the table would have blown my mind in 1995. I also can't imagine I would have found any of the secrets pre-internet.

Great list. I was very (pleasantly!) surprised to see Terranigma on this list! I still remember when I bought it (luckily it released here in Australia). I had never heard of it before but something about the name and the art-work just screamed out to me and I was fond of the developer (having enjoyed Illusion of Time). It starts with such humble beginnings but constantly re-invents itself as you progress through each era of the game, all to end in the way that it does. So touching...It was the first game to ever make me cry.
My own top 5 are all JRPGs. In no particular order, it’s FFVII (original), Suikoden II, FFVI, Valkyria Chronicles, and Chrono Trigger. To my great shame, I never played Terranigna or Vagrant Story…
I loved this video and most games in this list would be about equal on my own. One game's absence caught my eye though, Final Fantasy X, which for me would almost certainly be in the Top 5. I'm just curious if you didn't find a good spot for it, simply forgot, or if you have issues with the game?
It’s a personal(shared) list. I agree with some, disagree with others. I’m not a huge FPS guy, but I believe Half-life 2 should have gotten a mention. It was incredibly influential. FFX was okay on my list, but way better than the grey/brown mess that was FF8 and the boring snooze fest that was FF9.
@@islandboy9381 it has one of the best stories in video game history huh???? Tidus being dead the whole time was one of the biggest twists ive ever experienced. And many others would say the same
Loved seeing you honorable mention Golden Sun. I really hope one day you are able to cover it and the Lost Age on the channel in either podcast or video form. Great video as always!
Awesome vid, and the 1hr and 9min fly by perfectly. Just a few thoughts while seeing certain games pop up: 1) Final Fantasy IV - SUPER happy that you praised the DS version. I get that purest don't like the 3D version but I 100% that the way the 3D scenes were done along with the voice acting gave the game such a cinematic feel. The DS version is unjustly disliked/hated. 2) Suikoden - I have not played this game yet, but I played 2 and I had similar issues to yours (though you may have overall liked it more than me still). But something tells me from how you talk about the 1st game here and previous podcasts that I will like it more. I need to get around to it. 3) Ghost of Tsushima - Seeing this game pop up was the happiest I was in this entire vid haha. It's SO damn good! A lot of haters simply do not understand what makes this game so special. Given the context of the story and island EVERYTHING you do is immersive because it serves a purpose without making you stray from the path/objective of the game/story. No side quest or side content makes you ever be like "well...but I should really be doing this instead" unlike pretty much any other open world story-driven game. 4) Fire Emblem: Awakening - Super happy to see that this is your favorite FE game as well. I agree that it did not overdue the otaku-appealing stuff. 5) Final Fantasy IX & VI - I totally respect you listing them next to each other. While I feel that IX is the better game because I have issues with parts of the WoR in VI, I have always understood the argument for VI being superior. Matter a fact, VI being so damn good is why I have had problem enjoying VII. Also, it is surprising that you have issues with VI's translation as that is a big issue I have with VII. 6) Trials of Mana - I'm just happy it made the list! And pretty high up at that! You know it's my favorite game so it was also just awesome that this is one of the games you talked the most about in this vid. :P 7) Radiant Historia - I knew this game would be high up on the list, I'm just kicking myself for having not played it yet. I have the DS and 3DS remake and just having started it yet. I think I'm a bit overwhelmed by the idea of the time traveling given how the interface looks. Am I just being an idiot? Is it easy to get a grasp of that interface and mechanic? 8) Xenogears - Shocked it made it so high on your list. I get your reasoning, and perhaps the 20+ episode analysis helped with your love for aspects, but still just shocked. 9) Final Fantasy Tactics - I 100% agree that it did the story of 2 friends at opposite sides waaaay better than Suikoden II. 10) Terranigma - It being so high was not a shock, but it just sucks that the first time I played it I couldn't get hooked. I did a few temples and unlocked a few continents and...for some reason did not feel like I accomplished or did anything. Like, I did not feel the impact of resurrecting the continents and wild life/flora/fauna. Does that make sense? I know I need to give it another shot like I did with Witcher III. Hopefully I'll end up liking it eventually.
With the world of ruin in ff6 I see why some people take issue with it but honestly I kind of love it because of the fact it intentionally screws with the pacing because you lost and have to crawl your way around to gather the pieces together to try and stop kefka. As for it or ff9 being better I can’t say as I’ve just started playing ff9 for the first time recently
Have you ever played the Witcher3? I only ask because GoT on your list and they’re similar in the way they are designed!? I have never played GoT, but plan on getting it soon! I just have always felt that the Witcher3 Wild Hunt was perfect in nearly every way.. for me, it was that game I played nonstop all the way thru until I beat it & both Expansions, on both PS4 & Xbox, and in the time since it’s release, have done so multiple times.. On the OneX, I bought both th GOTY Edition plus the Standard w DLC Just so I could go through and earn the achievements again, giving yet another excuse to play it, one more time!! Anyway.. awesome list guys!!
Well, you just sold me on needing to play Terranigma. I've somehow avoided knowing that it existed until today, but if it placed this high with that glowing of praise I'll have to check it out.
I forgot how much I love your channel. The fact that you have FFIV in here (rightfully so, my favourite game of all time, another top 5 soundtrack) makes me a subscriber

18:19 I felt the same way about RDR2. I'd never really liked Westerns before this game but once I played it it became one of my all time favorite games and got me interested in other Western themed media
It's so cool how you're late to Xenogears, Terranigma, and Suikoden and that they had a big enough impact to make a top list like this. I was pretty late to Suikoden 1 and 2, and damn they were good.
My brother and I are in our 30s now and I can tell you we played so much Tecmo super bowl growing up. We would literally have 10 + friends over playing tournaments. Seeing you bring this back to me is so awesome man
Terranigma changed how I viewed video games when I was just a young kid. It deserves to be remade. I'm really looking forward to your analysis of the game.
Resonant Arc, I can’t help but be amazed by the depth of insight you put into your work. I don’t necessarily agree all of the time, but you’re a hustler, man. This was a great watch.
I recently finished the mass effect trilogy last month. The world building of the original and the second game is the best in gaming. The vigil ost is just icing on the cake.
Amazing selection. The games not mentioned I'd add would be: Grandia Skies of Arcadia Popolocrois (PSP version) Klonoa Door to Phantomile Bloody Roar II Jet Set Radio Future Panzer Dragoon Saga La Pucelle Tactics
Awesome list! Have you tried any smt games? I've been playing some of them recently and I loved the Digital Devil Saga doulogy; they have a great story based on hindu mythology and religion, and the gameplay is challenging and deep (although the encounter rate is somewhat high)
I would wish Mike would give DDS games a go! I feel like he intentionally skips the SMT titles because of how much time they take in general and maybe the art style, music, world etc. just don't resonate with him. I think the same goes for DQ, Trails of and Ys games. He has played Persona 5 though and he liked it, but the fact that P5 takes +100 hours to beat is pretty off putting. One series I wish he would try out is Yakuza series. Those games are very good
This was an amazing list to listen through and understand why you chose them. I really can relate to your taste and have many similar favourites myself.
Really great list, a lot of my favourites are there like xenogears, mgs3, radiant historia, terranigma, planescape torment, silent hill 2, final fantasy tactics, chrono trigger, final fantasy 6, vagrant story, shadow of the colossus, suikoden 1,2(wish 5 was there, as I think it's the most balanced and amazing game in the series), fire emblem awakening. I hope you will play Mother 3(I mean this is what you cover in your channel, Games with layers of depth), Ace Attorney Investigations 2(which is my favourite game in the series, probably my 2nd favourite game ever), Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective(A phenomenal puzzle game with excellent story), To The Moon(This is one of the best stories I have seen in video games), Zero Escape Series(An excellent series with fantastic storytelling) if you haven't played them yet and hope you enjoy them if you do. Again, great list and I understand why half life 2 isn't there even though it's one of my favourites. But expected Xenosaga Episode III to be here but I guess you didn't play it or it didn't go well with you.
One of the most incredible things about Chrono Trigger, which can only really be acknowledged and appreciated in retrospect, is how nothing about it feels dated in the slightest. The music uses chiptune to its fullest potential, not just emulating what real instruments sound like, but creating its own unique sound that can't be replicated. The battle mechanics make for combat that is simultaneously accessible and very mechanically deep, allowing for a JRPG newbie or a seasoned veteran to find fulfillment in the battles. The characters are not the most in-depth, even for the time, but they are endlessly charming and lovable all the same. The writers didn't resort to the familiar character archetypes that are frequently seen in story-driven games. They are an eclectic and inspiring bunch of individuals who simply want to make a better future. Very similar to Xenoblade, just less trope-y. Chrono Trigger isn't revolutionary for many things, nor is it super technically impressive, but it is incredibly unique and one of the most well-executed ideas in the entire medium.
As I commented on someone else’s comment: Damn. Final Fantasy Tactics and Suikoden II are two of my favorite games, but I’ve never made the connection between the fact that the stories about the two best friends are indeed quite similar. I wonder why. I feel a bit foolish. But at least thanks to you I get to finally realize! So thanks haha I mean, I think I kinda see what you mean? But yeah ahah I get why you’d be afraid of controversy. I admit I can’t really be objective because of the nostalgia factor. But in hindsight I agree that somehow the end of Suikoden II’s friendship felt a bit more forced, less natural and lacked clear and established motivations (more than “because of the True Runes” anyway). I’d blame it on a silent protagonist but that’s certainly not the only reason.
I think Jowy acted way out of his character...just look at how much compassion he had for Pilika. Maybe a lot got lost in translation but the whole u-turn felt forced.
I've been subbed and watching this challen since around ~10k subs years ago, always wondering at the time why it wasn't bigger considering the amazing quality, length, unbiased in-depth analysis and an overall honest and passionate feel of the retrospectives and reviews, and other videos. I'm so happy to see that the channel's grown and keeps growing and delivering quality content, with an emphasis on JRPGs still intact -- which goes to show that if you keep pushing on, your craft and dedication will not go unnoticed. This has been the case with reviewers like SomecallmeJohnny as well. It's inspiring to see content creators that believe in their work and retain their integrity and consistency throughout the years despite maybe slower than usual initial growth, and how they're naturally and deservedly rewarded for it. I might be off on this, but I think the channel had a different name in the past too, which I can't really remember now, but Resonant Arc is a beautiful and suited name that I'm sure'll stick. Keep doing what you do.
Would be nice if Square could have From (or Bluepoint, or even Cold Symmetry) make a souls style remake of Vagrant Story. Honestly it's almost a little strange that genre swapped remakes aren't more common.
Idk if you have played them. But Shin Megami Tensei sounds like a franchise you might enjoy. Minimalist storytelling about religion and philisophy. Amazing combat mechanics and art direction. And a banger ost (one of my favourites). Ones i recommend are smt 3 and 4. Digital devil saga (spinoff) are also amazing. Oh and great video!
This made my morning. I mean it when I say I've been looking forward to this since the 30 Games many years ago, which I'm now surprised to learn was put together moreso as a group [explains why Mario RPG isn't here...]. I watched this whole thing just now without looking at the timecodes, to feel the pleasant surprise of each entry, explained and critiqued succinctly and with the depth that made me love this channel in the first place. It is discussions and memories of games in this way that makes me recover from many "I don't feel like playing games" episodes [especially now], or the tiniest spark of wanting to create videos or stories that was inspired by this channel - that, which never dies out despite how tough life is. I hope to create my own list after seeing this [one that is not a collab, which I've already done...] Simply put, fetching awesome video and list. [Edit: thanks for the quick Twitter chat]

Nice list Mike! Thought I was going to see rpgs only but it truly is a chronicle of gaming with multiple genres across different generations. Happy to see Hyper Light Drifter and Radiant Historia on your list. Would love to see a future retrospective/analysis of Tri-Ace's Valkyrie Profile and Vanillaware's recent 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim
WOW! Anyway, my top 5 is ...Warcraft 3, Dragon Quest XI s, Final Fantasy 7, Persona 5 Royal and Witcher 3 GOTY. ;) I started with the NES back in 1990!
I was pleasantly surprised by some of the games on this list. Vagrant Story and MGS do not get a whole lot of love from all time lists and I’m glad to see them on here. Also very surprised since Suikoden I always gets outshined by II and Super Mario 3 by 64. Yes, FFT MADE TOP 10! I cannot argue with the ranking of 1 & 2. I probably played them multiple times and would flip them as I finished a play though. Both have the music, and characters, but I think CT has the better story. Love me some Gato’s song!
While I am sad to see Castlevania SoTN was only honorable mention, also from the PS1 MGS was the first game that truly felt like a cinematic experience with a well though plot and one of the best voice acting casts in video games. Granted you spent more time reading text and watching cutscenes, but it is fantastic and you can finish it in one sitting
@@denglongfist4270 I’m glad someone can comment and share instead of pointing out the negatives. Not you BTW. I agree with you MGS is truly great. I always remember (along with many of us) trying to figure out Meryl’s codec and swore I they never told me. It’s in the back of the CD case, but I didn’t call the game a CD…though it was in a CD case. 🤣
@@dycedarg19 thanks for your comment. In the end, so many more things bring us together, specially in the gaming community. Not only I spent hours looking in the game for Meryl’s codec sequence (in the end I just went frequency by frequency until I found it) but missed the thermal googles on my first gameplay and had to go through the hangar using cigarettes to see infrared sensors. Such a great game!
@@denglongfist4270 I too when frequency by frequency, but didn’t get it then. I think I was too frustrated that I had to do resort to that. Then I stared at the case and looked at the back…and there it was! 😡

Kinda surprised Bloodborne isnt on this list but it is your list. For me i put MGS2, ff7, and bloodborne in no particular order. Those 3 games do take storytelling way above any game i played or would think possible
@@ResonantArc mb i skipped to your top 10. FF7 does have one of the best plots ive seen in gaming. Usually i notice alot of ppl having played it would but Bloodborne over Dark souls i think the world building is much better
@@pinnacalada9448 I sadly still haven’t gotten around to playing the metal gear solid games. Ff7 I feel is my second favorite ff game as I just feel ff6 surpasses it in nearly every regard besides main protagonist and I’d about equal in terms of story I don’t feel blood borne really does anything g the best in the series besides atmosphere and lore but it manages to do Newley everything really well while most of the ds game excel in one category but are flawed in another. It’s always somewhat sad to see how some people say the soulsborne games don’t have a story when it’s so intricately crafted so it comes off as somewhat confusing if a statement.

It's great how respectful and friendly your viewer comments are compared to other gaming channels. Many comment sections of list videos are filled with jerks who criticize choices in mean ways. Your fans are the best.
We are mostly long time fans of Warialsky/Dark Pixel since their early days, 2011-12
is not about other channel choices is like they never live in the 80-90s, or seems they didnt play many important present ones too, so yeah they sure deserve all that hate since those videos seems done by a 20 year old dude that casually play games.
He picked all the common safe stuff that the internet loves to praise.
One thing I love about this list, is that it makes me think, "ooo, if I ever get the chance, I should play this." you've added a few more games that I'm gonna have to try Mike
Yeah, like that Radiant Historia I have sitting in my collection for ages now and never opened xd
Do yourself a favor and play that game
Shadow of the Colossus makes my top 15 too. I first played it (PS2 version) two months ago and I was blown away. What a masterpiece!!

Hope this countdown helps you reach a bigger audience. best of luck in the future. cheers!
I agree 💯%
well its not that hard for gamers to do their own research. ive literally looked up the list of all games made by any company i see. i also watched the videos showing all games for each individual console. then when i see something that looks cool i look up more videos on those games. so quite frankly there arent so many rpgs everyone should have atleast seen some clips on them all. sure we cant play every game ever but people can look into them all a little.
edit: new consoles and with steam and all the junk out there no one can look at it all. but like systems like ps1 ps2 or even ps3/360 era and before you can look at videos of all games ever for them. pc is different cause theres alot of unknown companies just piling trash into the stores. older consoles though you can watch the videos on all games ever for the systems.
Nah...
Yeah, this channel is great. Shame that the videos only get 40k views on average
9. Chrono Trigger - to this day, still perfection, I love the scripted battles, the simple and concise battle system that allows for complex outcomes
12. Terranigma - This game was a jaunt through history and science fiction, a great action adventure, and even better than Illusion of Time.,
13. Fire Emblem Blazing Sword -
18. Final Fantasy Tactics - It's FFT
24. Xenoblade Chronicles - This game is
25. Sid Meier's Civilization 2 - addicted as a kid, not much more to say. This was the best Civ game!
26. Super Mario Bros 3 - Still play this game every year, to this day. Biggest release in gaming history (maybe outside of Wii Sports)
Love seeing Skies!!!
@@lindenstromberg6859 Never played Victoria 2. Seems to be very interesting and many say the best Paradox game. I will give it a try.
Try "Gun".
when you talked about chrono trigger, i litteraly started to cry because im also feeling a lot of pressure from my family to give up on my dreams to be a storyteller and i really love videogames, last month i tried to buy a SNES just to play chrono trigger, but i got scamed lol. i will play it on an emulator, thank you for the amazing video and for the final message, it really made my day!
I’m happy Witcher 2 and Ace Attorney made the list! Also you’re my #1 source for Matsuno games videos.
So happy to see Prince of Persia getting mentioned, what an absolutely amazing underrated masterpiece.
My top 5 (till now): 1:Final Fantasy IX, 2:Dark Souls , 3:Witcher 3, 4: Planescape: Torment, 5:Metal Gear Solid series (I see them as one story).
You just can't hear 'To Far Away Times' and not nearly tear up. Even the story behind it is just awe-inspiring. Such an epic way to not only end Chrono Trigger but to also end your video!
I played a rom hack of the game where I couldn’t hear the audio so I feel like I keep getting shamed everywhere I hear about this game
@@plugshirt1762 It's fine as long as you beat the game and watched the credits with the music on youtube!

Love seeing Skies of Arcadia in your top 10. Top 5 for me.
It would be something like this:
1. Final Fantasy VII

6. Sekiro
7. Nier Automata
8. Zelda Majoras Mask

I'm so glad I found this channel, you guys do an amazing job.
Thanks for all the entertainment
I love hearing the passion when people talk about their favorite games. It’s always so personal and interesting. This video was incredibly edited and engaging, as well. An all-around hit.
If I may engage in a spot of narcissism, I’ll share my Top 10:
10) Rise of the Tomb Raider - Lara’s journey as a survivor hit its apex here, and I found a lot of inspiration for my own life here.
Bravo 👏🏾
Can I share my top 10 in this comment?
@@soratheorangejuicemascot5809 Please do!
@@zackeryparkerson ok for my list will always be inconsistent except for 4 games so here goes:
.
Also honorable mention because I actually didnt play the series:
Drakengard/NieR - very important to me for what it tells.

It blew my mind in 1995 and then in 2015 I decided to master the game in the traditional sense, and it blew my mind again. Cheers man.

So touching...It was the first game to ever make me cry.
awsome list! Majoras mask, Ocarina, FF VII VIII IX X are problarly my best gaming memories. nowadays disgaea is a fun series
Great list. But strange not see one Dragon Quest title mentioned - especially from a predominantly JRPG channel.
Terranigma is the definition of an underappreciated hidden gem and deserves so much more attention! 🙏
Sure but it never released in the states officially
It's an extraordinary game!!!
Great list, and quite some interesting entries. I recommand the game AI: The Somnium Files if you liked the Ace Attorney game series. :)
My own top 5 are all JRPGs.
In no particular order, it’s FFVII (original), Suikoden II, FFVI, Valkyria Chronicles, and Chrono Trigger.
To my great shame, I never played Terranigna or Vagrant Story…
I watched many, many best of lists. And this is by far the best I have ever seen.
I loved this video and most games in this list would be about equal on my own. One game's absence caught my eye though, Final Fantasy X, which for me would almost certainly be in the Top 5. I'm just curious if you didn't find a good spot for it, simply forgot, or if you have issues with the game?
That game is a classic. That was one of my favorite and most time consuming platinums.
After all these years, Final Fantasy X is still my favourite game of all time! Something about it truly is timeless.
It’s a personal(shared) list.
I agree with some, disagree with others.
I’m not a huge FPS guy, but I believe
Half-life 2 should have gotten a mention.
It was incredibly influential.
FFX was okay on my list, but way better than the grey/brown mess that was FF8 and the boring snooze fest that was FF9.
I don't like X's story but the gameplay was solid
@@islandboy9381 it has one of the best stories in video game history huh???? Tidus being dead the whole time was one of the biggest twists ive ever experienced. And many others would say the same
Loved seeing you honorable mention Golden Sun.
I really hope one day you are able to cover it and the Lost Age on the channel in either podcast or video form.
Great video as always!
Awesome vid, and the 1hr and 9min fly by perfectly. Just a few thoughts while seeing certain games pop up:
1) Final Fantasy IV - SUPER happy that you praised the DS version.
7) Radiant Historia - I knew this game would be high up on the list, I'm just kicking myself for having not played it yet.
Hopefully I'll end up liking it eventually.
still dont like FF4 on the DS. Too slow.
@@turismofoegaming8806 Yes, I have played Witcher 3.
@@poyopotpie did you like Ghost of Tsushima better?
Well, you just sold me on needing to play Terranigma. I've somehow avoided knowing that it existed until today, but if it placed this high with that glowing of praise I'll have to check it out.

Quite bold of you to put FF8 up there. Not many people put it high up their list. But I agree with you.
@@SouL_FiLthy Thanks, Yeah I like FF8 a lot. The story, characters, music, and ending are so good
Wasn't expecting this, Mr. Brown! Hyped as hell to compare and contrast.
I cant belive how we share the same toughts on soooo many games!!!
Incredible. Same here.
My brother and I are in our 30s now and I can tell you we played so much Tecmo super bowl growing up. We would literally have 10 + friends over playing tournaments. Seeing you bring this back to me is so awesome man
oh my god ace attorney!!!!! was not expecting that but so glad to hear you also enjoy the series
No objection here!
Whoops spoiler alert
Terranigma changed how I viewed video games when I was just a young kid. It deserves to be remade. I'm really looking forward to your analysis of the game.
I’m surprised no MGS1 but glad to see MGS3 on the list
Resonant Arc, I can’t help but be amazed by the depth of insight you put into your work. I don’t necessarily agree all of the time, but you’re a hustler, man. This was a great watch.
I recently finished the mass effect trilogy last month. The world building of the original and the second game is the best in gaming. The vigil ost is just icing on the cake.
Amazing selection. The games not mentioned I'd add would be:
Grandia
Skies of Arcadia
Popolocrois (PSP version)
Klonoa Door to Phantomile
Bloody Roar II
Jet Set Radio Future
Panzer Dragoon Saga
La Pucelle Tactics
Those games are very good
Very, very solid list. Loved it!
This was an amazing list to listen through and understand why you chose them. I really can relate to your taste and have many similar favourites myself.
Incredible Top List. Very well done.
Nice shout out for To The Moon. Loved that game as well.
As I commented on someone else’s comment:
Damn. Final Fantasy Tactics and Suikoden II are two of my favorite games, but I’ve never made the connection between the fact that the stories about the two best friends are indeed quite similar. I wonder why. I feel a bit foolish. But at least thanks to you I get to finally realize! So thanks haha
I mean, I think I kinda see what you mean? But yeah ahah I get why you’d be afraid of controversy. I admit I can’t really be objective because of the nostalgia factor. But in hindsight I agree that somehow the end of Suikoden II’s friendship felt a bit more forced, less natural and lacked clear and established motivations (more than “because of the True Runes” anyway). I’d blame it on a silent protagonist but that’s certainly not the only reason.
I think Jowy acted way out of his character...just look at how much compassion he had for Pilika. Maybe a lot got lost in translation but the whole u-turn felt forced.
Great selection of games! Feels like I've found a kindred spirit RPG fan like myself!
The channel used to be called Dark Pixel Gaming 🙂
My top 3 - 3 - The Witcher 3, 2- Nier:automata, 1 - the house in fata Morgana (probably the greatest piece of media imo)
So glad you're doing this!!!
0:42 that "some" really gave me some big smash mouth vibes bruh good job
I hope to create my own list after seeing this [one that is not a collab, which I've already done...]
Simply put, fetching awesome video and list.

Your so right about Fable.
MGS is literally in every top X of any best game list
This is one of the only people i'll watch a 1hr long top X list of because of how extremely well articulated your views are.
Thought fe3h would be somewhere here though.
You seem to love a lot of RPG JRPGs, You should give persona 5 Royal a go. it might make in your top 5 list! XD
4:40 This game is Awesome, Beautiful Storyline, Diverse Characters, Dramatic Battle Scenes, Memorable Music, It's a 90's total package of an RPG! Brotherly Love, Treachery, Loyalty, Unity, Friendship, Slight Comedy, Romance & Drama rolled into a 315Mb of Legit Treasure of Game.
Kinda surprised Bloodborne isnt on this list but it is your list. For me i put MGS2, ff7, and bloodborne in no particular order. Those 3 games do take storytelling way above any game i played or would think possible
I mentioned at the begining that I haven't beaten Bloodborne. It's in the honorable mentions section.
Ff7 I feel is my second favorite ff game as I just feel ff6 surpasses it in nearly every regard besides main protagonist and I’d about equal in terms of story
I don’t feel blood borne really does anything g the best in the series besides atmosphere and lore but it manages to do Newley everything really well while most of the ds game excel in one category but are flawed in another. It’s always somewhat sad to see how some people say the soulsborne games don’t have a story when it’s so intricately crafted so it comes off as somewhat confusing if a statement.
This is my favorite top games list on UA-cam. You’re obviously passionate, and not choosing games based on their legacy or popularity. It’s 100% your actual opinion, and I think that’s pretty rare.
