  • Asobo delivered one of the standout games of 2022 in Requiem, itself a sequel to the great opening chapter in A plagues tale innocence. They have now seen fit to blow past the old 40fps limits on consoles with a whopping 120fps performance mode update to PS5 & Series X players. I put all consoles and PC through the test bed to see if this generation is really going to be limited to 30fps and do the Series S players get any nibbles?

    Updates like this are good to see in games. I never really believed that 30fps was back just because a few launches had 30fps caps when most games still were 60fps. It would be cool to see you cover Jedi Survivor as that game has plenty of performance issues relating to stuff like poor CPU utilization and no RT toggle on console.

      with 1080p image scaled to 1440p and low pc setting and some even low than lowest pc setting available so that's is Wild.

    It is so good to see some really good news on gaming after all these last events. The pure and simple amazing developers just having time to properly optimize their tech into the platforms.     As always, great analysis Michael. I've been one of those few who choose to use the 40fps modes where available so I'll probably stick to it here as well, but it's good to see they went back to unlock the game for the majority who want more performance.
    As for DF, it's been clear for a while that they're not above using a narrative in order to chase clicks. I still enjoy their vids, but its obvious when they make overly broad claims that don't really reflect what's reasonable

    It's good to see a studio working to improve their optimization to increase the game's overall framerate. They can take what they learned here to give any sequel a visual boost at launch. Hopefully if they have a bigger budget for the next game they can put some money into motion capture for the facial animations, which are a bit stiff, and fall behind what could be achieved last generation. While it's too late to add features like that to this game, I could see them setting this as a goal for the future.

      @@Ryan_tremaine_klarenbach I'm not making excuses for how long the patch took to arrive. They probably waited until all versions for each console (and for PC, graphics card family) were tested and ready to release.
      The Series S has its own *special VRAM needs* and holds back development time more than the Series X version. It's poetic justice it is earning the nickname "the Scalebound console".

      @@Ryan_tremaine_klarenbach Makes sense that Digital Foundry don't give an accurate analysis of this game, because they accept sponsorship from Nvidia too... which casts their output regarding anything even marginally connected with that company into doubt. they akso have similar connections with Microsoft and Xbox. They really ought to declare these connections at the start of every video they post. I thought that was in UA-cam's Terms and Conditions?

    I played this day one on gamepass in the 40fps mode it was fantastic no compromises on the visual fidelity either. Idk what it is but 40fps feels incredibly better than 30 still the best way to play it and I wish more games would offer a 40fps mode.

    Well, mainstream console spec affordability in mind, regardless the new consoles' CPUs absolutely obliterate the Jaguar CPU cores in all the last-gen consoles, which has provided more 60fps AAA game options than ever before.

    I gave up on this game half way through my first play-through because it just didn't "feel" right. Now with this new update, the game feels great and I will definitely be finishing it. (Series X).

    It seems Plague Tale: Requiem is a game that loves compute performance more than anything else for performance; RTX 4090s for example have massive gains even over a 3090 Ti (double apparently) in this game.

      I completed it at launch with the 40fps mode which was pretty good on Xbox. Now I have rtx 4070ti PC so I need to play it again haha

    I've been replaying Plague Tale Requiem in NG+ on PS5 and I originally played the game in 40 FPS. I think the game really benefits from the increased frame rate, even if it isn't a fast-paced action game. It just feels nicer to play, and for those action moments when you do need to get away from an enemy, the reduced input lag feels very nice. Overall, I think the cutbacks they made to get the game to run at a higher FPS are very worthwhile and well done. It's hard to notice them most of the time unless you are specifically going back and forth comparing/looking for them.
    I do notice a small reduction in image sharpness (such as in foliage/alpha effects) but overall it's a really, really solid presentation and an incredible achievement by Asobo. The game just looks really good in both modes, and it runs incredibly well now as well. My hat is off to the developers for putting in the effort in making this possible.

    I been paying the game in 60FPS performance mode and notice the NPCs from a distance moving oddly in 30FPS? I have seen similar problems like this from Dark Souls 2 on PS4 and Xbox One at the time. It is a little noticeable.

    I gave up for on this on ps5 as the 30fps felt awful after having just played Ragnarok, sonic frontiers and evil west.

    that 40 FPS Quality mode is what’s I’ve asking from Xbox. We are the only one who have Low compensation Fram Rate which at 120 mode doubles the frame or if it’s just VRR will look smooth and responsive!

    It's good to see progress but I don't think it's where it could be. It's a good looking game but we've seen better settings and performance from better looking games.
    My guess is the engine optimisation and maybe GPU optimisation needs work. Don't get me wrong it's nowhere near as bad as other games, but it should be better nonetheless.

    Higher res at 30 fps, in motion, is useless when images are stuttering to see more details anyway.
    Res mode is good for photo mode.
    60 FPS for the win!

      Res mode details won't be visible anyway as the images are stuttering at those fps.
      Many think too much of res numbers but don't realize what is mentioned above.
      Res mode is better when standing still (photo mode) which invalidates the whole point of video games.

    Great video NX, i think 30 fps is still inevitable at least when the consoles are at the end of their support term. I still wonder how rockstar managed to put rdr 2 on the older consoles with stable performance.

      ​​​@@nguxurr9667GTA5 is very CPU demanding, that's why. PS4 has a very bad CPU, that bottlenecks its GPU a lot, making lots of games run bad. RDR2 is more GPU demanding, and it also runs some settings lower than the lowest on PC in order to achieve a stable 30 FPS. GTA5 on PS4 its just has lots of jaggies because of the lack of Anti-Aliasing, but it runs at medium-high settings. RDR2 looks awful when compared to PC, not because of the resolution and the AA, it just looks bad because most settings are on medium and low. I'm sorry to say this but the PS5 and the Xbox Series X will have the same problems. They have a pretty bad CPU too. And in the future, they will probably run most games at 30 FPS with a 1080p or a 1440p resolution. The newer games are already looking like this.

    Do you think a possible PS5 Pro would deliver enough performance uplift to have those current 30FPS games reach 60FPS without the devs having to make other compromises?

      Yes, all dependant on what a theoretical PS5Pro would Consist of. But once new hardware comes, adding new features and FX is normally what many devs want. But as an easy use of hardware resolution and performance are some of the least involved for new hardware.

      I do not see a reason for a PS5 Pro to exist. The standard PS5 is plenty powerful enough. Poorly optimized titles are not a sign that better hardware is needed

    if u wanna push the consoles to the max u have to go for 30 fps. But that doesnt mean there arent room for cutbacks to make a 60fps mode.
    Its the developers decision

      @Tulponatix thats incorrect. Consoles are the lead plattform in AAA developement.
      Very few games are built on pc first.
      A 4090 will really never get maxed since devs arent specifically targeting that card while making a game.

    I can now play this game at 60fps on my 1660s with quality preset and low settings on 1080p
    low and high have little to no difference

    Good work,Mike. I also agree that DF used a good loop hole to promote a video..
    30fps should never be a norm.. especially if gaming is apparently moving forward.
    Requiem was a good game, too linear though and took little risks in gameplay.. similar to the first game.
    I avoided the console versions and went with PC at launch. I was on a 3080 and at 1440p native I was getting a decent run in Balanced DLSS with all bar two graphics options maxed,with only shadows and draw distance at high.
    I was getting a solid 60fps capped with some drops in heavy scenes..but that dreaded camera movement still exists, even today. It's like the camera bounces off objects and is distracting.
    I currently tried the game on a 4080. Native 4K, maxed out, without any upscaling or frame gen I hit way over 60...throw in frame gen and I've topped over a 100fps at Full 4K...
    That console image is completely inferior to a good PC but fair play to the team for making the game perform far better, giving 60fps modes and improving their game. Bit late, but the effort is there for those who never purchased at launch.

    Its running 119 fps in resolute modus om my ps5.. i dont know how but my tv says it in the menu

      That is just the VRR window reflecting the 120hz container, at that point the game is likely below 48fps so the TV display just reverts to 8ms refresh which is 119.88fps

    Quand je vois la vidéo de comparaison, tu as l'impression que ça été réalisé avec 2 TV différentes PS5 (Oled) XSX (LCD) alors que l'on sait que le test a été réalisé avec la même TV.
    Les noirs ont l'air plus profonds sur PS5. C'est trop bizarre.

      I gave it the credit, for heavy GPU sections that require Texture fillrate, parallel compute & or Bandwidth the SX should be more performance to 10-15% if utilised fully. The thing is that is hard and is only a % of a games demands along with APIs, experience etc. This is a great update for all players and the team have done well.

    Great Video, thanks for speaking Facts about these consoles. Digital Foundry is nothing but a fraud channel, even in their Spider man Remastered video they completely disregarded PS5 running unlocked FPS with Ray Tracing at 90FPS
    They never shown this impressive feat

    By this logic, why can't then all console games run on low internal resolution (720p, 1080p. etc) and then upscaled to 4k ??? It would hit 60FPS with no problem. If not enough, then lower even more the internal resolution ? Obviously that is not that and having not enough time for development is not an excuse , I think.

      @@SaberKingofKnights1 Since consoles moved from checkerboarding to FSR it started to look like shit. So for me it is not an excuse . Also they can always do the dynamic resolution . It's all about money now - fast food game industry. They will learn the hard way when people stop buying anything at launch .

      ​​@@ivofixzone6410Consoles still use checkerboard rendering on some games. The difference here is that the internal and original resolutions of the games are so low. BTW: Upscaling is totally different from FSR and Checkerboard.

    Weird that he talks about the gamma differences. Having uncalibrated gamma is not inferior, you just have not calibrated it...
    He even left the XsX with a higher gamma levels.. how dumb. Why give the appearance of a ps5 advantage... Makes him look like a PS5 fanboy.

      Because you need to make sure you have enough head room to meet a close or locked 60fps. You can't account for all drops so having the average FPS higher really helps

      Forget the res numbers and experience for yourselves.
      Noone pauses and zooms images to count pixels. At 30 fps images are stuttering anyway to see a higher res. Framerate is always visible because games images need to move. It's not photo mode.

    Weird callout on digital foundry especially given you purposefully misconstrue their point and imply they say something they don't.
    I know it's important to you that you're right and you're angry that you feel like you deserve their success but very disappointing to see you trying to do that.
    Digital foundry always implying that it's devs choice and time and money are main factor for 60 fps.
    And they're absolutely correct in saying that 30 fps is coming back and especially any game pushing the envelope and crossgen is biggest current factor for 60 fps

    On pc this game only uses 3 to 4 GB vram and ram usage is very low that is why performance is better on series X it has 10gb ram with 560gbs bandwidth

    Great analysis as usual but isn't the whole 30fps discussion because we were told we would get 4k 60fps for this generation, but in order to get 60fps and above sacrifices are having to be made in a lot of games in order to hit that 60fps target and so we get either 4k 30fps or we get sub 4k with other visuals stripped back, in this case 1080p upscaled for performance mode. I really don't think this generation will be able to hit 4k 60 with RTX reflections\GI etc with any consistency. Now whether thats down to the hardware or the devs optimisation is another question.

      4k native 60 fps with rt is not even possible on the most powerful pc gpu yet, you need upscaling and fake frames to reach it

      Also Dead space remake and witcher 3 next gen upgrade comparisons favor series x. Ps5 won Hogwarts, Callisto,re4 remake from aaa recent games. What's interesting imo is which console handles ray tracing better and while on paper series x in that area is clearly faster the ps5 can handle ray tracing equally as good and implement phenomenal results for a 10tflops console(ratchet and clank rift apart i.e). Imo API on PS5 is way better and easier to optimize games than on series x

    Calling out DF and claiming that they’re being naive is not the most professional way to state that you have a difference of opinion on the 30fps debate. Pretty disappointing honestly.
    It’s interesting to hear a different stance on the situation but that doesn’t make the other side any less valid. Yes IF a dev targets 60fps when making a game they can of course hit it by making the right concessions, but many devs and publishers care more about a pretty game than a performant game so it’s a pretty big if. As cross gen becomes less the norm, it is reasonable to think that more devs will favour graphics over performance.

      I am not calling anyone "out", I only used DF as an example and nothing more. My point is not one of superiority, but one of experience. Thinking or talking in absolutes, which the internet does all the time, is not in anyway accurate or helpful. The point made is games will continue to be delivered on what they always have been, the aims, budget, skills and cost of the teams. Hardware limits just factor into the same old triple constraints.

    When this game launched I immediately said that it was unacceptable for a game of this era to launch locked at 30fps. 60fps IS the norm now, and there is an incredibly significant difference between the 2 frame rates. I suppose it's nice to see the devs update the game. However, it should have launched like this and there's no excuse that justifies why it didn't. Developers should not be sacrificing performance for resolution, or other "quality" gimmicks.

      60fps is more common in console games now, but it is still up to the devs if they want to target that performance level. If the devs want to achieve a prettier looking game and it means sacrificing frame rate, that's their call. It is a console afterall and is finite and fixed in its power. You want 60fps all the time or higher, there's a reason PC is an option. You can't have it all 🤷‍♂️

    I prefer 40 fps on series x vs 60 as the drop in visual quality in 60 is highly noticeably. 40fps feels really great thanks to vrr And Optional motion blur. The game is stunning

    30fps is back when naughty dog blows us away, then the community complains for 60fps. Quality gets reduced to fit a 60fps mode, then 30fps no longer back. I think I'm willing to sacrifice the consoles 60fps to see what developers could do with modern hardware besides ray tracing, hear me out Rockstar

      When in motion, at 30 fps images are stuttering to see higher res anyway.
      Res mode is good for photo mode, when standing still, which nobody starts game for it.

      Don’t think so. They have a lot of experience with Pc and direct X in general. Furthermore the engine seems to utilize the architecture of the series X better as the ps5.
      Not the end of the world here.
      Happy to have the 60 fps now.

NX has clearly said that Asobo are used to DX12 and xbox Api and know how to properly develop their games on it as they already have a great experience with MS flight simulator. This xbox advantage would keep happening if every studio decided to give priority to xbo api over ps5's .
      Where is the bottleneck narrative you trying to bring here ?

      @@rahulpandey9472 yep i been many years console player, but lack of performance etc. On consoles push me to buy a Top tier PC so 2 month ago i buy pc for gaming with rtx4080+core i7 13 gen and 32 gb ddr5 6000 mhz memory with ssd pcie 4.0 speed 7100 mb/s so now i have next gen experience! 4k max setting max RT and way above 60fps smooth gameplay. Ps5 now for me is only for exclusive games!

      They didn't ... NX gamer clearly said the game was built primarily on the xbox API using DX12 which allows to take full advantage of the xbox power ... This is a dev choice and no one else is involved .
      The result you see here should be the standard for every game as the series x is more powerful than ps5. But because most of the devs build for ps5 API and port it to xbox , it makes ponies like you think that ps5 is the better piece of hardware .

    You a z-z-z-zoomer? Because we've been through this cycle time and time again. DF are correct. Way more 30fps games will be coming once last gen is finally dropped, and thinking that devs will later update their games with 60fps+ modes is extremely naïve. Devs will almost always target graphics over performance, and "budget and time" are only getting tighter. Talent and critical thinking is also vanishing thanks to the backwards woke agenda infecting so many studios. The state of AAA releases in recent years, especially this year, is an absolute joke. Updates as seen here are far from the norm. I still expect this gen to have more 60fps games overall thanks to these consoles actually having decent CPU's this time, but frame rates will go downhill in the next 18 months.
