Great video! In terms of recommendations, I'd suggest spending the extra money on a Hanna checker. I know this video is old and you may already have one, but in terms of accuracy with dangerous meds like copper it's totally worth it.
Yep I totally agree! I have since found the Hanna checkers. I haven’t bought the copper test yet because I’m done adding fish for now. I will have one for sure on this years upcoming build!
Great vid bro, simple and to the point! Quick question, You mentioned you do half the dose of the recommended so does that mean for example it says 20 drops per 10 gallons . So do you put 10 on the first day and 10 on the second and then leave it at that for 14 days or would you put 20 and 20 in for a total of 40 for 14 days. Directions seem kind of confusing and hopefully this makes sense lol thanks I advance
What’s in your hob filter?? I have a 30 gallon qt setup very similar to your setup except I use a sponge filter and do a 5gallon water change every 3 to 5 days
Do they need to be cycled? I have a tank I’ve been cycling as a nano tank but ima turn it into a qt after I had a purple tang spread ick though out my display tank

I’m wanting to add 3 tangs to my tank, and from what I gather it’s best to add them at the same time.
Do you think a 20 long will be big enough to qt 3 tangs together?
I’m thinking the Purple, Yellow, and Yellow Eye Kole Tang.
Personally I’d say 20 long is pushing it. They would all have to be really small and you would have to really monitor ammonia and provide a lot of hiding spaces. If it were me I would use a 40 breeder.
How often do you test your copper level? Do you find that you have to dose daily to maintain therapeutic levels? Just curious as I am about to start treating fish in my QT

when doing a water change and running copper, how do you keep the copper levels stable? add copper treatment to the new water before its added?
I did the water change and then tested the copper levels and slowly adjusted from there.
To clarify - after you treat with copper... do you then remove the copper from the QT tank for a few weeks and monitor the fish in the QT tank, or do you just transfer the fish directly to the DT?
Yes, I definitely monitor for a week or so before adding to the DT.
Can you add the copper while the fish are in or do you get the levels up before you add them? Also besides temp, salinity and copper, are you concerned about any other perimeters?
Hello yes in my opinion it’s better to slowly raise the copper level to therapeutic levels as oppose to dropping the fish into already raised levels. Your only other parameter concern in a QT tank should be ammonia levels. Hope that helps.

Hey thanks! I’ve learn much more since this video. I should do a QT update. Lol! If you’re running Hypo I wouldn’t raise the cupramine any higher than 0.25 instead of taking it all the way to .5 which is the recommendation under normal salinity conditions. I usually hold the treatment there for a minimum of 3 weeks. Just make sure you watch your fish closely for any signs of added stress. You should even try hyposalinity for a few weeks before even adding copper, it may do the trick if it’s nothing major. Disclaimer: I’m no expert. Lol! Good luck!
Few questions:
1) How is the Cupramine on wrasses in your experience? Your Radiant, Leopard, Yellow Tail, etc? I've read copper is hard on them.
2) Do you treat with copper regardless of signs of ich or only as needed?
3) How often are you doing water changes to reduce ammonia?

1) When I treat wrasses I only run half the recommend dose and only for 7 days. Then I run hyposalinity for two weeks.
2) yes I treat everything with copper regardless. Half dose if I don’t see any signs of inch.
3) usually once a week 40-50% when running copper. If no copper I use a hang on back filter with carbon.
Lately I have found this product called Safety stop that was recommended by melevs reef. Check it out. 👌
@@jsreefs5576 I've heard of Safety Stop. Thought about using it. I don't think it's an alternative for copper and treating ich, more so external parasites.
Lastly, when running copper and Prazi are you running the HOB filter with carbon? Thanks again.
It could be a safer alternative, Safety stop is a mix of Formaldehyde which is used for external parasites including ich and Methylene blue is good for treat fungus’s. I don’t think it treats internal parasites though. I’ve been using metroplex for that.
I don’t run carbon when I’m treating with Medication. The carbon will remove the copper.
FWIW pH alert only works in fresh water
I thought the Seachem ph alert only works in freshwater, do you find it works in hypo?
Yes it works in saltwater as well.
Does the kit come with everything to measure the dosage?

Great video! So you are looking at 6-7 weeks total? Love the live brine feeding, do you do the same in you main display?
laminar flow yes about 6-7 weeks total depending on the fish. Some may take longer if they actually have an illness. 👍 I only run the brine shrimp in the quarantine. I forgot to mention this but I slowly stop feeding the brine shrimp the last 3 weeks to get them only eating frozen and prepared foods. Works great for me! 👌

what kind of breeder box do you use?
It’s a petco brand. I’ve had it for a while so I’m not sure if the name. As longs as it’s plastic and has big enough holes for the shrimp to make it through but not to big that they all swim out at one time. 👌
What do you do for topping off the quarantine? ATO or by hand?
I top of by hand.
I also check the salinity everyday.
How do you keep your water so clear ?
Weekly 20% water changes.

I do water changes and add carbon to the hang on back filter. That will reduce it significantly.

What do you mean my bring him out of hypo salinity?
Hyposalinity is when you drop the salinity level lower than where you would normally keep it in a reef tank to help fight off parasites. For example 1.018. Bringing him out would mean gradually increasing the salinity levels back to a normal 1.026. 👍
Yeah. İ am long time freshwater keep. About 2 months ago i bought used 32 biocube with some rocks etc... İ set the tank. İ added zyme9 to cycle the water it went all well and i got couple of fish and placed there
First 2 weeks all fish good. So i visited one of lfs and got a anemone and a purple fish. İ didn't qt them. İ though it works as freshwater fish..i just accumulated them and added to the tank. So I see that purple fish has white spots. Normally in freshwater if u see that just pump the heater up and it goes away..i did same thing for my saltwater but fish died in 2 days. Anyways. Than other start doing. Stupid me i brought more fish and they all die in 2 days.. and i read lot of about it and i see that fish bring ich in my tank and all new fish dies cuz there is ich in my tank. But some how my first 2 fish still alive. So now i treating the tank with coppersafe to get rid off the ich..yeah i see for saltwater best way to Qt them with.medication couple weeks before u add them in your main tank.. also main tank should be free off ich.. thank you your video shows me how to set up at thank...

I am quarantine my Achilles tang and I am keeping the copper as recommended but the fish is not happy it's eating but not that much
My quarantine is containing
Live rock
Spong with airpump
No water change at all
So did you think I should make daily water change to keep Achilles happy ?
If it were my QT I would probably do water changes to keep the water fresh. It’s important that you monitor the copper levels closely. How many days has it been?
@@jsreefs5576 around tow weeks, ok my QT is 60 litter so how many litter did you think I should do water change, and also should I do it daily ?
I am not experience with QT this is first time .
After two weeks of copper he should be good to go. Is he showing signs of ick or illness? If he’s the only fish in QT I would probably do 50% water changes every week. I would also not add anymore Copper at this point unless he’s still showing signs. Monitor him for a few weeks and keep him fed.
Yes only achilles in the QT No sign of ick the fish very healthy swimming very well but not eating toomuch and still stress always staying in corner I am planing to keep for at least another tow weeks I want to get him little faty so can stay alive with other tangs in the main tank
I will do 50% water change and I am not going to add copper and I will let him another tow weeks with chaicking so I can treat him if there is any sign of ick.

Yes the water changes will make him happier. If it were my system I would also run a hang on the back filter with carbon just to help keep the water fresh while you observe him.
Makes no sense not to. Especially if you already got fish in tank
