In March of 1721, Johann Sebastian Bach carefully inked six of his best concertos into a book for the Margrave of Brandenburg, Christian Ludwig. The original title, "Six Concerts à plusieurs instruments" is now known as the "Brandenburg" Concertos in English or "Brandenburgische Konzerte" in German.
These six concertos represent the summa of chamber music in the high baroque period, and the third concerto (BWV 1048) is noted for its rich texture of three violins, three violas and three cellos, with a continuo part for the harpsichord and violone. The original title is as follows: "Concerto 3zo [terzo] a tre Violini, tre Viole, è tre Violoncelli col Basso per il Cembalo". On the continuo part, Bach has written "Violone & Cembalo", and this is how it is performed in the video, just as it is indicated in the original manuscript.
Brandenburg III makes an appearance in Season 6, Episode 19 “Lessons” of Star Trek: The Next Generation, as well as the episode "A Matter of Time."
This concerto is part of the Voices of Music Great Works project. A Creative Commons edition of the score, based on the composer's manuscript, will be published to accompany the complete recording, and the recording will be available worldwide on Blu-Ray and CD, and for free on MP3 and high-definition, 24 bit FLAC files.

:)
Fun fact: In the episode "A Matter of Time" in Star Trek: TNG at around the 19:35 mark, the piece can be heard!
In my Personal opinion, a favorite amongst the Viola's and Bassists.
All my life I loved J S Bach, but I never imagined that one day I would be listening to a Brandenburg concerto whilst sitting in my apartment...in the state of Brandenburg!
Thanks to the technology!!!
It's hard to believe a human being is capable of writing this..
You have no idea how many times I've thought the same
Yes ditto
...But is true! God's things!
This comment should be Pinned to the top.
This music is a gift from the highest spiritual realms
My dad died listening to this. His last words were”so beautiful “. Not a bad way to go.
I'm so sorry for your loss
I am so sorry for you but you gave him comfort at the end
Thank you for sharing 2:14
We should all go listening to our favorite music!
Peace be with your dad and yourself
My father was a choir director and church organist. I grew up hearing Bach being played in the house. I feel as though my dad is around when I listen to this music.
Man, when that 3rd movement kicks in, it just kills me, every time. It gives me hope for humanity to know that someone could create something so beautiful. I get weepy just thinking about it. Perfect performance, thank you.
me too
Amen!
😊
In my view the Brandenburg Concertos represent the greatest achievement in the history of mankind.
300 years old and still so relevant and lovely
Still will b around In 1000 years..
@@kevinramen1546 Forever!
I can listen to it a thousand times without getting bored. Sounds like music from heaven.
Me too
I believe it to be
This music is like a cool breeze, a light thru the darkness, a soft touch from a friend. Thank you all so much!
The lady cellist to the viewer's right of the harpsichord is SUCH A JOY to watch!!! From what I see, she loves life and music! BRAVO!
Tanya Tomkins! 👏👏
Me encanta!!!
Exactly.
Fabulosa!
The cello is like a part of her body. She's in complete control
People who dislike this beautiful video are hard to understand.
Bach is probably the greatest Genius of all time
Stravinsky said Bach was better at music than anyone else is at anything.
He is!
Yes indeed
It sounds like climbing a never ending staircase of pure joy 😊
great way to put it
Bach, one of the best antidepressants in this world!
Bach's genius is indisputable. Parts of this concerto are so inspired and inspiring, so fiery but exquisitely controlled, the voicings and phrases, the complexity and interpolation, and astonishing coherencies, everything about it's architecture and beauty, are truly fantastic in the most extreme sense of the word. In all the billions of people of all time, there was only one Bach.
I love No 54, how he creates so much from so little. My fav is the old B/W BBC footage with Glen Gould speaking about him, the piece, and then the beautiful singing. It's just a piece of magic I am so so lucky to have on my PC. We are all so lucky right now to have this much accessibility which may not be available to any of us at any point in our blind future.
Peace and love to all.
My dad died listening to this. His last words were “ so very beautiful “. I hope I die like that.
Oh that is so touching
I am mexican... When I was 16 and 17 years old I had thinking on suicide several times just because I coudnt accept living in this absurd and unfair society. I have to say that 2 things apparted me from suicide: Stepan wolf from Hessen and Brandemburg Concerts from Bach... Im a mature man now, studied philosophy at university, ive always loved literature and art since I was 7 years old... So I want to say that, since I was adolescent, I had the vague impression that Bach music is the universe language, I cannot say it in other words. When I was adolescent and listened to Brandemburgo concerts I felt that Bach music expressed something like the structure of universe. As if Bach´s music helped me to understand the universe. It is so deep, powerful and meaningful... In contrast, Mozart´s music looks to me superficial, only sounds funny games...
🥺 so proud of you... I’m playing this for a concert next week
Hey Miguel. Bach's music also helps me understand the universe we live in. I'm not a religious person, but Bach's music touches my soul. Stay strong my friend.
I'm quite sure Bach's music has healing properties. It puts you in touch with the harmony inherent in the Universe (as described by Kepler).
It's interesting to watch the face of the grey-haired cello player as she plays - her facial expressions show that the human brain is engaging the same mental pathways to express music as it does when expressing speech. This music is wordless and it still resonates in the human mind as communication.
Beautiful.
In all my 24 years playing the cello, I have NEVER found a better interpretacion of this masterpiece... Brilliant and congrats...
bach brought music from heaven to earth
"JS BACH BROUGHT MUSIC FROM HEAVEN TO EARTH!" 🌎 🌍
Well, um...YEAH!!! :)
**HE MOST CERTAINLY DID!!** 😁
Amen!!!!! Celestial music
Yes, facts ❤
I remember when I was in middle school right before the Internet became a thing, I had the attention span to just sit back and listen to music like this for an hour or two and not feel distracted. It was great.
10 min or even 3 is still good for you
Shall we neglect to praise and laud the staging and filming of this, or fail to say that it is as pleasing to the eyes as ears? No, ladies and gentlemen: we shall not.
It does look satisfying doesn't it
I admire not only the genius that produces such heavenly music, but also the discipline, the training, the devotion required to perform it!
As Voices of Music passes the 400K subscribers mark, we thank you all for listening to our channel. And our fabulous musicians!
No matter what else happens in our world, this is timeless.
This may have become my favorite rendition of Brandenburg Concerto No. 3. Beautifully executed.
It's time of isolation. But listen to BACH. And you never will be alone
Agree.
@@VoicesofMusic is there a FLAC online download for free or some price? buying FLAC is better idea than visting a store during isolation.
The Brandenburg Concertos are the most beautiful / moving piece of music I have ever heard.
The quality of musicianship and the recordings are superb. Thank you.
Our pleasure!

I don't understand how this incredible channel doesn't have millions of subscribers, they deserve it! and the people of this world must know it! they do not know what they are missing. wonderful artists, incredible sound.
Thanks so much!
Alvaro many of our contemporaries look down at people of our ilk. They think we are out of touch, unfortunately they they do not realize the glory of the music we love.
Perhaps if we added fireworks coming out of the harpsicord, and CGI warriors and fighter jets zooming through the strings....?
Ah, no.
More of a rap guy myself but my piano teacher told me to listen to this and boy is it beautiful to see people who love making art doing their work. Right on!
4 million--thanks, everyone!
And still counting. Such an AWE inspiring performance !! Truly LOVE it so much. Can't express the genius approach you people showed here. up to the 5 mil and up !
5 million now :0
This is my favourite Brandenburg. It's so wonderfully descriptive. An 18th century gentleman goes out for a drive with his horse and buggy on a bright, crisp Spring morning. That's the first movement. He stops at a tavern for a refreshing beer - the intermezzo. Then , realising the time, he hurries home to be in time for supper - the faster allegro movement. It was also a joy to see the four violinists tossing the musical motifs amongst themselves like a volleyball team. 😊
Baroque is my favorite genre of music, and this is one of my favorite Baroque pieces. I am a historian who specializes in the "long 18th century," not a mathematician or physicist, but the Brandenburg Concerto No. 3 always struck me as a musical interpretation of the principle of perpetual motion. This is one of the best I have ever heard.
I like that very much. The whirring universe. Bach conceives of perpetual motion; out comes this concerto. Especially the 3rd movement.
My favorite is Brandenburg no 4
@@DNAleguillou Mine is Brandenburg no 2
The amount of hidden details is delightful!
Brandenburg Concerto No.3 is the best of all the Brandenburgs. It's so catchy and upbeat all the way through.
I agree.
Best tweedle-deets!
My favourite is 6th concerto and then 3rd.
They are just so fun to listen to :)
Bach has saved many lives...His music is the manifestation of something that trascends the miseries of the world and transports to a Spiritual Realm of orderly beauty and unphatomable harmony. Thank you Johan Sebastian!
The phrasing, dynamic range and mastery of this piece by these musicians really makes it so inspiring, especially in the first movement. The conversation among the cellos, violins and violas is wonderful.
I do not know where to begin. First, ahhh Bach. Enough said. Then the ensemble. All extremely talented musicians. Flawless performance. Then the videography and sound quality are high-end. Well done by all involved. Thank you for sharing this masterpiece of a performance.
Thanks so much, you are very welcome.
Agree it foreshadows CPE Bach, interesting.
I can only become silent after this. No words can express my feelings.
Best version on UA-cam
Everything they perform is the best on you tube🙂
Yes!
Played with so very much emotion, and captured with engineering expertise. Gorgeous audio and video.
I’ve heard it said that this is the greatest piece of music ever written.
I’m a man of many musical tastes, ranging from Classical to Romance to Joplin, Jazz, Blues, Big Band and all the way to rock. But I will never argue that assessment. I, as well as many, can listen to this work of greatness endlessly.
This piece is up there close to the top, but I have always believed Canon by Pachelbel or maybe The Four Seasons by Vivaldi is the greatest ever written. If you haven't heard the other 5 concerto's, I highly recommend. Absolutely beautiful. I hope they are listened to and studied another 300 years.
We had a blast trying to play (and perform) this while in high school about 50 years ago. That poor viola had a real workout.
I still don't know why you guys only have like 196K subscribers, this is one the best sound quality and performance with 4K footage. How in the world people not like this?
Hopefully we will get more subs!
I just subscribed!
Because every individual in World is not lucky..
They are missing heaven hapiness..
Bach somehow defines Western Civilization with that turn at 5:02. It’s just indescribably brilliant. He delivered this creation in the year 1721, maybe earlier.
That second movement though... straight fire!!
I'm a New World Man. I love Rock. I love Rush. I love ZZ Top, Pat Benetar, Genesis, even Reel Big Fish.
My Dad would have no Rock music in the house. I grew up with the Ohio State Marching Band albums and classical music. The first album I can remember hearing was Walter Carlos' (now Walter) Moog synthesizers with "Switched On Bach" and I never forgot this whole piece. Ever. Bach was the closest to God in my opinion. Thank you Voices, I am a contributor.
I looked up Bach after hearing baroque style solos in rock/metal songs. I've been playing classical guitar now for years.
What’s incredible about Bach is that he says so many things without uttering a single word
This and Vivaldi's "The Four Seasons" are sheer perfection and a glimpse into the beauty of what mankind can achieve at its best. The Blue Danube too is pretty awesome. I crank that up in my car a lot.😎
Can we give applause to the bass?! This piece is very detailed, and it’s no joke for the bass section!
I can listen to the first movement forever. When I had a particularly bad day i would play, rewind, play again, rewind, etc. My daughter was only 3 but she quickly learned if Mommy did this, it's best to sit quietly in your car seat until we get home. (She's now 37.)
Love this performance so much!
One of the best recordings of this concerto that I've heard. This ensemble has the maturity of seasoned musicians but vigor of young virtuosi. Bravi tutti!
My favorite brandenburg and quite frankly, favorite song. wonderful performance and lovely tone!
I didn't see any singers.
@@aragornthebrave My apologies. Favorite *piece*.
@@aragornthebrave oh my!
This is the most perfect rendition I have ever heard. They balance their instruments perfectly and their command of their instruments and knowledge and passion of their playing, just puts me in heaven. Oh my!
Bach the master of all
The clarity of playing is astounding! I have sometimes not liked some performances of Bach's music, and Baroque music in general, because the players, be they on modern or so-called period instruments, play very fast and slur the notes together. But the Voices of Music players have a superb articulation without sacrificing the smoothness amd momentum of the performance. Superbly played!
robertm2000, I am sorry for my inadequate English. I agree with you, it sounds very good! Maybe they know better than everyone else where to put the microphones? :-)
I love this more than anything. It not only sounds beautiful on the baroque instruments but it is a wonderful performance to watch because everyone is so into the music and everybody wearing red with the dark background truly pulls it off. Such musicality and spirit, beyond appreciation! If only I could listen to all six Brandenburg concertos from you guys!
This is Bach. It like God is behind you giving you sunshine . And the music covers you .
✝️🌅♥️
Bach was a deeply devout Lutheran. Most of his music takes inspiration from Lutheran theology. It's so amazing.
Still the beaty of all musicians didn't expired,I'm watching this recording, hundreds of times, any other recording can't beat the "voices of music, thank you very much mr.david Taylor and Mrs.hanakke van proosdij
This is a world class performance of Bach's 3rd Brandenburg concerto, and I've had the privilege to listen to many, including live performances by two of the most prominent early music ensembles in the world. This one is is just to masterfully executed. No matter how many times I listen to these concerti, I always hear something new and exciting.
Thank you Voices of Music! You bring out the genius of Bach so well. You give me goosebumps.
It's been over 30 years since I played the double bass in my high school orchestra. I wasn't great, but I was 1st chair (because no one else played the bass), and Brandenburg 3 was (and still is) one of my most favorite pieces of music. Y'all played beautifully, and I broke down in tears while listening to and watching this recording. I suppose retrospection and mortality hits us hard sometimes, but thank you.
from a current semi-pro bassist it is never too late to get back into it! Baroque is some of the most satisfying bass parts if you really get into them.
There is something so prefect about this. It's like a butterfly opening it's wings to reveal the perfect symmetry or splitting a piece of wood to open up it's perfect book matching. It's a perfect order, before entropy changes that.
This should be broadcast on TVs and in radios to make people feel relaxed and happy in these difficult times. It is such an incredibly perfect music, performed flawlessly by very skillful and talented musicians, thank you for all your great work that can be found on UA-cam.
The depth of the music is spectacular. The balance of the instrumentation is excellent, which creates a very profound and sophisticated watching experience. Outstanding performance!!
Thank you.
For a good portion of my life, I've heard this piece but I never knew what it was. FINALLY FOUND IT!
Oh my goodness, this is an exquisite interpretation of the mightiest musical Maestro’s amazing Brandenburg 3. Perfect tempo and tone, I really love it - thank you so much. Bach, will forever be the greatest of all, it’s as if he transported a little piece of heaven into each of his compositions 👍
Beautifully said
Proper good job mate! You guys did a wonderful job!
I literally can't go to sleep at night without listening to this at least once each day! :D
This is the best performance I've heard of this piece... Please get this on Spotify!
Best version I've ever heard. The musicians are truly talented
THIS EASILY MAY BE THE MOST BEAUTIFUL RECORDING OF THIS BACH PIECE
What an exquisite way to start my day! Praising God and worshipping Jesus with this music. Inspired and magnificent!!!! Thank you for sharing this on UA-cam.
How did anything on this planet get to be so beautiful, in the composure and the execution alike. If you close your eyes, you can see the waves of beauty flowing up and out from these musicians.
I agree! And 'waves of beauty' is a wonderful way of putting it. :)
The sound quality is sooo good
Tx!
In a thousand years from now humanity with still appreciate Bach.
Fact 👏
I have heard this played on the radio and TV so many times. This is beautifully done. I am becoming a classical music convert.
I've never heard a rendition with such concentration placed on dynamic indication, BRAVO!
I really love how these people played the piece with the tools available during the Barique period. They used Baroque bows (which I have neve tried but look both fun and difficult). The cellos also had their endpids retracted like how cellos during the baroque period weren't usually built with end pins.
WOW! I never noticed that!
I literally spent 3 minutes to find a word to praise this video. I mean, all of the videos of this channel make me feel timeless. This is pure art and joy. Thanks for the beautiful music and I would love to press the replay button!! Plus, my fav are this one and J.S. Bach: Violin Concerto in A Minor. Love you!
This is an absolutely stunning performance. Thank you for taking me to another world. !!!!!!
That's the right way to play Bach ..on period instruments .. this is another world ..( and for the performer too ; it's really anothers sensations , and for the lover too ..) Something else ..
agreed. The keyboard stool though... :-D :-D :-D ;-)
This is the most powerful, the purest and the most satisfying rendition of this piece I've heard so far.
I played the viola part in high school (in the late '70's) with my classical friends SO MUCH that I have the 3rd concerto memorized. Since orchestra was just before lunch would play right through lunch.
I've played all six concertos over the years and love them all, though 3 and 5 are my absolute favorites! ❤
Hooray! This is perfect music for an isolation day. I love the spirit and energy of the ensemble. Thanks
Thanks for listening.
So many instruments but ... just one music, just one mind.
Thank you for sharing.
My favorite composer's most brilliant piece of music is delivered in flawless tune and harmony.
C'est magnifique. Bach was an utter master of his craft. Give me more!
I want to be your 1,001 comment contributor, during this unprecedented Coronoviruus pandemic times in April, 2020,
I am hoping and pray this challenge will soon be over and years later people will likewise appreciate this beautiful music which I have been enjoying for decades ,
Thank you.
I could listen to this forever... lifts my heart to the Heavens. Do these people realize how incredibly gifted they are?
I'ma say...
Yes. They know (*_*)
Reminds me of Sunday mornings when my neighbor would drink his coffee outside and play Bach.
J.S Bach would be proud of this group of musicians!
"Sheets? Where I play I don't need sheets!"
-Cello Dude on the right
That isn’t a cello because it has 5 strings. What is it?
It's a cello.
I remember playing this song in high school this song was one of the hardest piece to play I personally think
Most impressive performance I've heard! The clarity of each instrument's parts so brilliantly executed- this has left me speechless! Bravo!
This is by far one of the absolute best pieces of music ever conceived, composed, and written! Bach, Beethoven, Vivaldi, and Mozart were all total f-ing geniuses on a whole level of their own that probably will never be surpassed in skill set, complexity, beauty, and overall quality and awesomeness! I hope in the afterlife to meet them all!
Having listened to dozens of recordings of this concerto, I can safely say this is the best rendition ♥️
Thanks so much!
This is truly the finest. I'm humbled by their performance. Go from strength to strength. Never stop.
We will try our best!
Thank you for so much.
one of the best versions ever.. with period instruments ❤️
When you try to stay away, but keep coming Bach ❤️
