    Dear Nate,
my in-laws had an embroidered picture hanging on their kitchen wall which read "5 sind geladen - 10 sind gekommen - gieß Wasser zur Suppe - heiß alle willkommen" (5 were invited - 10 came - pour some water into the soup - welcome everyone). That's our kind of hospitality in the South and Southwest of Germany. Every time I've been to the North of Germany it was more like the US.
I don't know about the tapping except for certain kinds of hard liquor. Normally (as in proper etiquette), you toast and/or clink, then you drink. Putting down your glass after a toast and/or clink but before drinking is disrespectful to the toast (negating it).

The tap on the table is a regional thing. Sometimes depending on the kind of drink. 😊

    Learned a few things there!
here in the UK I think there is an assumption that going to a Biergärten is the same as going to a pub with a garden.
There are similarities, its a place to get together, everyone is welcome, don't be too loud etc.
But the subtleties are fascinating, good video Nate!
(Drinking beer by the litre involves many "trips", so take some change!)

Deshalb sieht man viele Kastanien in bayerischen Biergärten. Bei uns sind es eher Linden und Eichen. Allerdings die meisten Gärten sind heutzutage in Restaurants und großen Kneipen.

    Nice reaction, Nate.
I neither tap, nor do I seek eye contact. It must be a regional thing, not where I come from.

Das war bestimmt eine Weißwurst die Bayern sind da strikt wie man die isst.
Zuzzeln oder schneiden mit Pelle oder ohne und dann bekommt man noch verschiedene Methoden beigebracht.

Hab ich das Video nichjts chon mal gesehen? anyway, decision to spare yourself an Beertent in Munich was an smart Move. believe me, its loud, hot, hectic, drunken people, cheesy Music, and Prices even North Americans will get pale.
Youre right about the Sizes, a Mass in an Liter, halbe Mass semi Liter, nortmal Beer can bee, depending on Sort between 500 amd 750 Milliliters( Weizen for Example).
Great you point out, its not targeted effective drinking, one-armed snatch in the one liter class and half liter class,(plz do an better Translation Dude: gezieltes Wirkungstrinken, einarmiges Reissen(wie gewichtheben) in der ein liter und zwei liter Klasse, thx:D)
We in majority just love to sit there talk about God and the World, Sports Family, planning coming Week, meeting new ppl, and not to get drunk fast. We are surely life up to the reputation not to open easily. That goes for the normal Days for sure. but when we slow down, and get public at such spots we surely get aroung with strangers for sure. We sometimes even just want that when going to such Gardens, bcs , time planning as we are, just dont think opf such interactions on an normal working day. Beergardens are like an limit free zone i Terms of Conversation and acceptance.
Edit: as i were young, here over middle Frankonia, you had to tapp on the Table, or you owe an round to all at the Table. saying this, it was 35 Years ago. The look into other Eyes , well i do it, but its not for fear of bad Luck, its something of Value of and Appreciation of the person you "prost" to.There are Dudes and LAdies that i would not even get the idea to look in their eyes on such Occasions...you guessed it, mostly Family members joined in per Marriage and i cant stand them:)
    Stay healthy,( mean it:))
