Please watch the rest of this series, the tutorial is excellent for beginners and worth watching. He does an amazing job explaining everything in a concise and clear way without digressing or repeating information (a few times, but it is organic and helpful too)! He goes all the way to turn 92 by the end of the tutorial series, but jumps from time to time to speed things up.
I was about to say that repeating things isn't necessarily a bad thing, unless the thing being repeated is wrong, unfortunately a LOT of wrong stuff is put out there nowadays! Hell, people even STILL claim that in Minecraft sugar cane grows faster on sand, Mojang(the creators of the game) have said this is FALSE as have many, many, many streamers! I don't understand why people seem to grasp to false information even when the truth is slapping them in the face!
I somehow broke the tutorial. I built the library before it wanted me to build it and I got hardlocked into a loop of it telling me BUILD A LIBRARY, that I couldnt build cause it was already there.
tutorial was okay, but sometimes it was like "lol do this 'cause it's cool", like the monument, I was told to make it just as an example of a building to make, but it didn't explain how it gives me culture and what culture does.

Thank you for this. I started on PS4, and this is my first Civ game. The in-game tutorial blows so much. The guide woman rarely speaks, and when she does, it's only to tell me what I just did. I basically blundered through my first game randomly figuring out how to do stuff. It took me fifteen turns just to figure out that I had to build my capital with my initial Settler.
Just started playing this game and man did I experience a lot of confusion and frustration. I have never played any of the previous games which added to the chaos. I learned so much watching from watching this video especially about the benefits of the tiles, settelment placement, etc. The video is still helpful 7 YEARS later!!
Fantastic tutorial, man! I pretty much dove straight into getting my ass handed to me by AI after playing through the in-game tutorial but still watched this whole thing just to make sure I didn't miss anything, and wow, it's really clear you really took the time to think this through from the actual perspective of a new player, taking care not to overwhelm us with too much information at once. You make a great teacher!
Crazy how I just dropped $40 on this game everyone else apparently got for free. But what I’m here to say is thanks for the tutorial. It’s helping me a lot
Thank you Quill. Bought Civ 6 a few weeks ago. Never played before. Jumped in and started a few games. Realised it was massive and needed help. Watched all 6 of your beginner tutorial AWESOME work man. Very well presented. Going to start my first big game before coming back and checking out your specialist tutorials
This tutorial is really well spread through out the 6 parts. Coming from Civ 5, I found it very useful to understand the new mechanics and appreciate some things that initially seem frustrating/confusing. The game makes much more sense now. Thanks!
My History teacher let me play this on his laptop (in school; hes awesome that way) and I was immediately intrigued. I have always been a fan of ancient civilizations, especially greek and roman. He taught me a few tips that he learned like using your territory to separate two other civilizations, and make them pay to cross for trading. Really cool game!
I actually feel the exact opposite is true for map size. The bigger the map, the easier it gets because the more likely it is for you get your own little corner of the map where no one bothers you. Just like how more AI civs means more allies and friends - weaker civs that have fallen behind are a lot more likely to ally with you.
Great video. First time trying a Sim game since Sim City a hundred years ago. After starting the game and staring at a screen for a few minutes, I went in search of a beginner's tutorial, none of which were for true beginners. All the game interface has changed in the last 5 years, this was immensely helpful.
Your energy and speech pattern feels a lot like Milo Thatch from Disney’s Atlantis and I’m living for it. It’s so appropriate for this highly historical game about ancient civilizations.
I went on epic game came here, I remember as a kid when first civ came out anyways I never picked up a civ game, but I heard this version is good. This game is fun and wanted to see how I get better.
Very well done! I've been playing Civilization since the first one - but HATE reading directions. Your video is perfect - I learned LOTS and I appreciate it.
you are really amazing, you are just proficient in every single game i just finished your tutorial for hearts of iron and now coming to learn this game thanks man, you are so great
Just picked this up on a steam sale(80% off!!), honestly looks like the most complex game I’ve ever played. My plan is to play Russia, install communism, start up the Soviet Union and start amassing a nuclear arsenal 😂 Think I have a lot to learn before I get to that stage though 😂Great tutorial though, look forward to watching the rest of the series!
this makes me feel better about how I played the other day... I felt like there was more to do but I just build a thing build a people and research some stuff and move some peoples around .
Thanks for making this. I am new to Civilization, and I have played several times now. Each time I feel like I am WAY behind by turn 50 or so, and start getting discouraged. I think I may be doing something wrong. At turn 50 in a standard game, I usually have: 2 archers, 2 warriors, 1 scout, made 2 builders, 1 settler, and 1 trader. I have two cities with 3 improvements each. At my capital, production is 8.6 and at my second city (near by) my production is 4.5. I takes about 30 turns to make a district!!! So by turn 80, I will finally have a district to build in, and I couldn't produce any units during that time from the same city! I get mowed over by the computer AI which is way advance of me. I am learning from these videos.
I have to say that I'm surprised this wasn't actually a joke video about playing as Scythia and build lots of horses to crush your enemies and get loads of money.
Got the game on my switch for 15 bucks. Couldn't miss the chance. I played civ 3 or 2 on ps3 days and loved it. On my ps4 and 5 or pc. Always more than 20 bucks and never got around to buying it. Now it was more affordable to me. Came with 2 expansions and other tribs or whatever. On tutorial still atm but I'm hooked. Still have stardew and wolfstein 2 to beat haha.
He had no idea this would blow up three years from now. I’m sure he’s thanking God for that bright idea. Not to mention he went ahead and made it a series. I came to see if I wanted to download civ6 for free. Didn’t wanna see gameplay, wanted to see the game broken down, and a beginners walkthrough is perfect for me since my goal is to see what intricate things grab my attention. So glad to see your video at the top of the list(:
Very thankful to your tutorial. This is my first time paying Civilization, and I was totally lost, when I started the game. Your tutorial is a big help. The only issue is that I'm playing on Nintendo Switch and I think I'm getting confused with the controls, other than that, at least I'm starting to understand what the hell is going on on my screen lol 😂
The switch version sucks. I called Nintendo and got my money back. This has to be one of the most complex games I have ever tried. I couldn't make sense of anything.
Its funny that is this a multi part series, possibly spanning a few hours, and is a 100% serious and helpful tutorial and the one for Heart of Iron 4 isn't....
Firaxis should pay Quill to do one of these once a year. I tried playing civ5 once, and got very confused. Then I saw a video like this on this channel. Ended up buying civ5 with all the expansions, beyond earth, and will surely buy civ6 as soon as I get some time to play it.
This is so helpful! I have been trying to figure out how to play. I did the tutorial in game….but you still need a base level of understanding. I really appreciate how clear you are… and the explanation and recommendations on how to start. It really helps to understand the symbols and the terminology so you can make an informed decision. I wish I had found this at the beginning…can’t recommend enough! Thanks for taking the time…think I will love this game now I get more about how it works. Off to watch your other tutorials now!
Civ 4 is the only game in the series I have played and I am about to buy 6. I have forgotten everything I did know and you have taught me things I didn't know. Thanks!
quill18: "Avoid the large map on the beginning." Me before tutorial: "Oh, large map, that's cool." Pick that because I always play AoE3 on larger maps.

100% agree. I wish more tutorials were like this. Doesn't matter the subject matter.
Thanks!
New mechanics are *really* frustrating....
I came from civ 4
My History teacher let me play this on his laptop (in school; hes awesome that way) and I was immediately intrigued. I have always been a fan of ancient civilizations, especially greek and roman.
He taught me a few tips that he learned like using your territory to separate two other civilizations, and make them pay to cross for trading. Really cool game!
Shao Xun Leong Man I wish I could’ve played this in school
Your delivery and approach to teaching is actually very impressive. Very helpful video 🤙
Finally bought this game after YEARS of playing IV and V. Wow this game is different, there are so many different features to keep track on
I actually feel the exact opposite is true for map size. The bigger the map, the easier it gets because the more likely it is for you get your own little corner of the map where no one bothers you. Just like how more AI civs means more allies and friends - weaker civs that have fallen behind are a lot more likely to ally with you.
75% sale on steam on Black Friday, a couple of friends recommended Civ 6 and now im here
lel same my teacher recommended it to me
It's on sale again right now. Going to make my days go by faster as I'm "working from home"
same it’s on sale now again, might as well try it and I’m here too
Free on epicgames store XD
Madlab563 lmao just got it
90 seconds in and you've basically already covered my 'first ever Civ game' mistake. Learning happened - took for ever :D
Same here😂
New to the game in 2024. This is a great tutorial! Very engaging.
Great video. First time trying a Sim game since Sim City a hundred years ago. After starting the game and staring at a screen for a few minutes, I went in search of a beginner's tutorial, none of which were for true beginners. All the game interface has changed in the last 5 years, this was immensely helpful.
I just picked this up on ps4 cuz of henry zebrowski kept talking about it on- last podcast on the left. An I’m loving it
I hope to pick up Civ 6 for Christmas, so thanks for doing this. I can be better prepared when I start playing!
JRF2k :) You are going to have a wonderful christmas.
And a very short one ;).
I just did
Your energy and speech pattern feels a lot like Milo Thatch from Disney’s Atlantis and I’m living for it. It’s so appropriate for this highly historical game about ancient civilizations.
Got this game yesterday and have no idea what I'm doing, thanks for the video!
I don't really need to watch this, but I'm doing it anyway because it's cozy :D
And its Quill. Quills tutorials are best tutorials. Like a warm fuzzy blanket.
Lol!
Cozy 😂😂
Same
30 minutes to finish turn 1 and im not even mad lol
I just got this game on switch and I'm literally so confused, I have no idea what to do
Do you still play?
@@nicholasmarrone491 i’m not him but i just got it on ps4
@@mason308y8 I just got it today on Xbox
Yup I just bought it today on PS4
Just bought it last week on switch
I am not a native speaker. But the way you pronounce the letters make it very easy to understand and enjoy every second. Thank you
you are really amazing, you are just proficient in every single game i just finished your tutorial for hearts of iron and now coming to learn this game
thanks man, you are so great
Thank you for this video! I just got Civ 6 for the Switch and I felt really lost, but this video helped a lot. Can't wait to get to part 2.
😂😂😂I felt exactly the same
Just picked this up on a steam sale(80% off!!), honestly looks like the most complex game I’ve ever played. My plan is to play Russia, install communism, start up the Soviet Union and start amassing a nuclear arsenal 😂 Think I have a lot to learn before I get to that stage though 😂Great tutorial though, look forward to watching the rest of the series!
I am watching this because I just bought CivVI and my pizza showed up just as it installed.
Amazing
Fuck that, go ketogenic.
i like you
@@exnihilonihilfit6316 Wtf keto diet sucks!
That’s the only good reason to watch this.
this makes me feel better about how I played the other day...
I have to say that I'm surprised this wasn't actually a joke video about playing as Scythia and build lots of horses to crush your enemies and get loads of money.
that would be powergaming civ for beginners, no fun
Anyone else here because of the switch version?
Hell yeah!!
Yup
yeet
I played board game version but this game still confuses the hell out of me
Mimo yes
i'm way too overwhelmed by this game and the menus, i hope this will help!
You are not alone. I am there with you. Some of the stuff in the menus they don't even explain what it does. Still trying.
Been playing the game for years, my only advice is to NEVER trust Gandhi
@@skysix5733 Yeah, I just bought this game after playing Civ V for several months, and the Civ VI Civilopedia is a huge downgrade from V.
Just bought CIV VI from Best Buy for $19.99. I’ve play 1-4, love the series, and this one is just as good. Thanks for the video and the info!
*talks about mining*
"I'm not sure that's the optimal pick here"

TYVM! Still usefull 6 years later haha, just started playing.
Lemme smash
lemme smash
@@nicholaslim8817 me first
The switch version sucks. I called Nintendo and got my money back. This has to be one of the most complex games I have ever tried. I couldn't make sense of anything.
@@Batman-jc5uc did u play the tutorial
Everyone Else: Got civ 6 for free
Me: Still has steam
Its funny that is this a multi part series, possibly spanning a few hours, and is a 100% serious and helpful tutorial
and the one for Heart of Iron 4 isn't....
Quill generally likes the civ series better he's hinted.
Yes he likes these ones better and so do i hoi4 is a good game but I prefer civ more
So far one of the best tutorial series' I have seen on any game.
just got the $200 bundle and all dlc for $30 which i cheaper than the stand alone game so i knew i had to but it and i love its so far!
Bro appreciate this so much ! Just now learning about this series, looking to pick it up on PS4 and the Switch.
Firaxis should pay Quill to do one of these once a year. I tried playing civ5 once, and got very confused. Then I saw a video like this on this channel. Ended up buying civ5 with all the expansions, beyond earth, and will surely buy civ6 as soon as I get some time to play it.
Jumping from Civilization revolution to this was a big shock
i just love it when i watch a half-hour tutorial and i'm only on the second turn. the pinnacle of communication right here
This is so helpful!
I feel like this guy would make a very good teacher, he's very enthusiastic and I like that.
This tutorial isn't angry enough.
lol
man I was so frustrated when I first played civ 😂
HAHAHAHAHA! I know right?
As usual a very nice tutorial of quill. You have always been my guide of the civ games. Thanks
Fantastic video. Just bought my first Civ game on Steam, and I love how you're explaining everything and keeping it simple and straightforward.
Civ 4 is the only game in the series I have played and I am about to buy 6. I have forgotten everything I did know and you have taught me things I didn't know. Thanks!
Went from Steam Sale to the game, to getting killed by barbarians and straight to this video lmao
Literally same

Me before tutorial: "Oh, large map, that's cool." Pick that because I always play AoE3 on larger maps.
Moss that game wow epic LAN battles in 2001 lol
Quill, is there any chance you could do a 1 episode "catch up" that goes over new things from the expansions?
My friend suggested this game to me but I struggled a lot with it, but with your help and a little motivation to keep playing, I'm not too bad at it now, so thank you!!
You know what I love about your approach? I feel like I am sitting in on a class with a great professor up at the front of the class. Love the 'thought trees' you talk through :)
I'm only here because the tutorial is legit 3 hours long, and you can't just save and quit.
