Thank god, finally the easy to understand guide that isn't one hour long. Your guide is really helpful. I play blind a few times and my town always evolved so slow.
IKR? So many of them are literally hours long in multiple parts when I really just want a quick overview so I can learn as I go without everything turning to crap within minutes
I've played hundreds of hours of Civ 5 but only a couple in 6, is there any negative to building more cities in 6 other than wasting turns and some growth in actually making the settlers? In 5 you get more unhappiness the more cities you have, is there something similar in 6?
@@michaelstewart9308 No, the more cities you have the more powerful you are. The difference is loyalty, if you put a city too far of another and have nearby cities from other empire the city can declare independence of you and in some cases join the other empire, that's the problem if you expand yourself with no control. The happiness is different to every city, not general for all cities.
I JUST got this game for 8 bucks on g2a and played it blind. I instantly became addicted lol I did ok my first game, but almost won my first game today 👍
I’ve only played once 1,5 years ago and I did 36 hours straight. I was seeing tiles in my floor, walls and when closing my eyes for hours afterwards lol
This is one of the few videos that actually explain the game rather than giving you a strategy to reproduce without understanding it. This allows me to improve by myself. Thanks :)
Here's a tip that works for me every time. in the very early game other civilizations tend to send out settlers unescorted. Send your starting warrior over to the nearest one as soon as you have settled your own city. Hang around close and as a settler comes out get straight after it. when you are in a position to capture. Immediately declare a surprise war and grab it. Loot any developed squares before heading off to make a settlement with your captive. this buys you time to produce another warrior and repeat the process. By doing this I have often got myself 4 cities early in the game without having to build or buy a single settler myself. The other city never getting strong enough to attack me due to repeated looting. Even better, if you do this before encountering any other major civilization, none of them see you as a warmonger.
Lovely. Thank you for making this. Realized as I was watching it, that after owning the game a few days, I had already learned some of these tips on my own, but it always feels nice to have your suspicions confirmed by a more advanced player.
This is an excellent starter tutorial. I've been playing for some time now (Civ lll my favourite until Vl), but it's really good to have a tutorial that's not an hour long, with so much info, it's impossible to keep up. Yours is both concise and clear, and very relevant to those just starting out on their journey. Thank you.
Just picked this up for Xbox for £5 and these tips are far better than the in game tutorial. The in game tutorial might tell you HOW to do something but does not explain WHY you would want to do certain actions. The game didn't even explain the game loop / premise properly. This video helped me make sense of a lot of things I was confused about. Thanks for creating it :)

Just recently got this via the Anthology, learned really quickly that barbarians should be destroyed and that playing "tall" works a bit differently this time. It is *still* possible to have few big cities, it's just that the minimum for few is a lot bigger now cause otherwise you will miss on strategic resources and room to build districts in the late game.
yes barbarians are everyone's most hated part of the game ahaha. You can definitely still build tall and they even added the Maya as a tall Civ, but I definitely think you want at least 6 cities or so

Great video. I’ve played civ in the past, but not for a while. I’ve got the itch again and this was a nice primer. Also, you have such a pleasant voice. 😊
I'm on game 3 and I think I'm going to lose that one as well. These are the main mistakes that I made: - Game 1: I built way too few builders so there were many resources that remained unextracted. I attacked Russia and took over some cities but lost a few again and eventually my own capital (Rome). So I resigned. - Game 2: Going for a cultural victory but lost against another empire that won through cultural victory. Initially I focused too much on my military and even failed taking over a city-state (Seoul), meaning I couldn't trade with them anymore and I probably pissed off a few other civs. - Game 3: Currently ongoing and going for a religious victory (Spain) but Russia is over halfway on their way to win (also religious victory). Japan was leading until I sent my missionaries over and converted a few cities. At first I thought of invading Russia, but I think I'm also behind on tech so that wouldn't work. (I neglected science somewhat and especially culture in order to focus on faith points.) So I'm now thinking of sending missionaries over to Russia to keep them from winning. The trick now is how to keep Japan from recovering religiously. Perhaps I should invade Japan (they're right next door) and convert Russia (they're quite far away)? Anyway, nice video lol
@@MohProbs Thanks for the awesome tip! I think because of their distance, their missionaries haven't quite reached my own cities yet. Also I keep them pretty "clean" using my inquisitors. Maybe I can get another civ to also declare war on them. That way, that civ will also be more immune to their religious influence (and hence, Russia will have less influence overall)?
another cheap lil thing you can do... (although it's kinda cheesy) is if you only need to convert one more civ, you can trade your cities to them so that over half their civ follows your religion LOL. just make sure you calculate the number of cities correctly lmao
5:26 I love how he explains that Archers are likely the best way to go when in doubt...then immediately chooses Mining as an option, that has nothing to do with Archery.
We used to call Civ a god game. But thanks for explaining 4X. I just started Civ 6 this week. CIv 1 on PC was great. Back in Civ 1 it was a good idea just to have a 4 wide city. Sounds like they are going back to it. Thanks for 6 wide size info. I see spamming settlers is still a working tactic.
Thanks for the video! Just got the game today and I've only ever played civ rev so it's definitely a leap haha. How important are early amenities? It feels like as soon as I settle a second city they are unhappy with plenty of turns before ill be able to build anything for them.
just my opinion, but I feel like amenities aren't THAT important. I think as long as you aren't going massively negative (like beyond -3) I think you should be fine? either way, still good to make sure you grab them when you can
i have a different idea on the yelds, you can disable to show yyelds but u can make the game show you when u put the mouse over a tile its on the game options, it makes the visual of the game more beautiful without that many icons ruining the visuals, its called "mouse over menu help delay" on settings u set it to 0, and u always see when put mouse over. and its good to enable all other map options too as it show u the name of things.
yeah i feel you on the yields ruining the visuals. I just think it's easier for new players to play with the icons on at all times. and yes - having map names and stuff can be useful as well
Just got the game a few weeks ago. A learning curve but can't get enough out of it. Still playing my first real campaign as the Russian empire. I ended up losing the race but was still inclined to keep playing past 500 turns. Ended up eliminating Philip ll in a epic war that took over 50 turns. Nuked Barcelona for the victory. Currently pesting Japan with endless missionaries and outrageous demands. Meanwhile Norway just lined up all it's naval fleet on my borders. This game has been great so far.
Yesterday after losing a berserker fight a thousand times in GoW Ragnarok I decided to calm myself down with my first ever civ game. Before I knew it it was 4 in the morning and I still don't get it.
Guys, there's a Steam Workshop mod for a display that keeps track of and, well, displays... all your promises, both promises that you have made and promises you have refused. As a total noob I've found his can be super helpful. I'd link you to it but UA-cam appears to be deleting any comment with a link in it. The mod is called "What Did I Promise?"
I have NEVER played any strategy game, mostly a Dark Souls, long adventure type player and this game seems so intriguing but overwhelming lol. I want to give it a shot but maybe as a 43 year old gamer,it maybe hard to teach this old dog new tricks lol. I'm about to buy it on the PS store...and no doubt I will be lost, but ya only live once. Great video,at least I know what I'm buying now 🤣
Hey man, thanks for this video. I have had civ for more than a year, and I'd play it very early game, and give up because I just had a lack of focus and idea. This video definitely have a good general idea of how to play it. Just one question: What is the benefit of districts and how do I set them up?
Thanks for checking it out! Districts help give you boosts to certain resources which aren't as easy to generate from the land. Once you determine how you want to win - you will likely want to make the appropriate districts for your victory type / civ. So if you want a science victory make more campuses, if you want a religious victory make more holy sites, etc
Thanks for the tips! I really want to enjoy the game but its kinda complicated as a new player to the series. Won a couple of times by Religious Victory which is very easy, I just want to try out other victories too. Thanks man.
Wow love the way you explained The 4x. I have never had referred to like that and I have been playing his games since before World of Warcraft was Warcraft. I search games like this all the time I just thought their real-time strategy but they're actually not like that at all the 4X makes way more sense
I just bought the game. I started and did not understand anything. I watched your video and played the game and still have no idea what im doing! great video btw!
Thanks for the tips on barbarians especially. I played my first game last night and I ignored them until suddenly there’s 10 groups of them all on my borders.
3am......as soon my freaking battering ram is built.....I'm going to bed... Ok, ok....right after I get causus belli and declare war, I'm going to bed..... . RIGHT AFTER this battle, I'm going to bed......
Played Civ 5 on PC years ago, decided to pick up Civ 6 on Switch during the dark days of the pandemic, and it’s such a pain in the ass compared to PC but I can’t stop myself from playing it.
Usually my main city I settle then let build 3 tiles in one direction before setting the city definitely 3 tiles away from the 3 tiles straight out for the main city
I just finished my first play through, mostly because I like the beginning of the game the most and I start to lack on where to put districts and the like.
It'll take time! I think just take some time to learn the adjacencies (i have a link to a cheat sheet in another vid) and you'll begin recognizing it easily
That meme is accurate to say the least. Never tried this game because I prefer RTS. Plus I’m trying to play through the tutorial to understand everything, but it doesn’t save the progress (on Switch) so I have to start over if I exit the game. Still, I’m stuck on it completely. Exactly as the meme: “Just one more thing here and..... ok just one more thing there and... ok...”
yeah the tutorial in the game isn't the best. I'd honestly try a real game (maybe at a lower difficulty - prince and under?) and just learn by playing. there's so many things to learn about so really the best way to figure things out is to keep playing. to your point though, that's the game - just going turn by turn and slowly building and building
i had this game for a year havent played it since aoe2 came t gamepass my friends became obsessed with strategy games then bought civ 6 i have slept like 4 hrs a day for the last week damn this game is good and im glad to see we figured out most of those beginner tips on our own throughout the week / 3 games xD
appreciate the feedback. i actually do have a pop filter, but i think maybe i need a new one or something because the S's bother me when im editing as well and i've been trying to reduce it more in recent videos
I have a challenge idea where you would start as the civ that is in the middle of the ocean has to cross a continent before settling to me that gives you a layout of the whole area plus he comes with extra units so that helps with any surrounding barbarians
Okay, i played my first game last night (or at least some of it) and the constant barbarian attacks plagued me until round 66. I started with two barbarian war camps super close, and a third that kept sending ships to destroy my fishing
10:15 I legitemately have in my first game barbarians near my civ so i sent my only earriors to attack the scout, the scout lured my warriors away but then more barbarians came out of nowhere (unexplored territory to the right around a mountain) so i tried to befriend the other civs and had open borders so they could ward off the barbarians (which worked I had no troops to defend) now the barbarians are way atronger and i am constantly in a push and pull with them where i am either on the defensive near my capital (I only had on city for a long time because of the barbarians threat) and when I tried to push them they had difficult terrain that take 2 movement to cross one tile and they had defensive archers which made attack impossible. Im still in this problem with a low military but atleast the kongo is pleased I am not a threat (the leader has the paranoid trait so my small army pleases him).
it'll take some practice, but it sounds like they started spawning and sending raiding parties. make sure to keep the scout away. might want to tech into archers too so you can get free shots off on them some players also just let the barbarians attack their capital because barbs can't raze capitals. u could let them wear themselves down and take them out when they're low
@MohProbs update on the playthrough: the Kongo betrayed be eventually and I lost my capital, so I gave all my assets I could with a deal to Russia just to spite the Kongo before my second city was take over as well. I did quick play so I'm not sure what difficulty that was but I made a new session on the second difficulty and am doing MUCH better now.

- Game 1: I built way too few builders so there were many resources that remained unextracted.
Anyway, nice video lol
if you need, you can declare war on russia to stop them from spreading religion into your lands!
@@MohProbs Well that's interesting, thanks!
5:26 I love how he explains that Archers are likely the best way to go when in doubt...then immediately chooses Mining as an option, that has nothing to do with Archery.
Use a rock as an Arrow
I started yesterday clueless, this vid will be a big help🙏
hope it helped!
Thank you so much, I had to go through really bad guides before finding yours, that was really fit for a beginner. Thanks again.
glad i could help!
We used to call Civ a god game. But thanks for explaining 4X. I just started Civ 6 this week. CIv 1 on PC was great. Back in Civ 1 it was a good idea just to have a 4 wide city. Sounds like they are going back to it. Thanks for 6 wide size info. I see spamming settlers is still a working tactic.
i would love a God game where you create a world and life and stuff. would be sick
Haven't played since V, just downloaded it. Thank you for the basics!
appreciate you taking the time to watch!
This game has been great so far.
glad you're enjoying it!
Got this for PS4 a week ago and had no idea what I was doing hahaha. Thanks for the advice!
thanks for taking the time to watch!
Thanks! Great video, my growth is usually too slow and some of these tips I didn't even consider.
Awesome work!
thanks for checking it out :D
Yesterday after losing a berserker fight a thousand times in GoW Ragnarok I decided to calm myself down with my first ever civ game. Before I knew it it was 4 in the morning and I still don't get it.
sounds like the civ experience to me!
Guys, there's a Steam Workshop mod for a display that keeps track of and, well, displays... all your promises, both promises that you have made and promises you have refused. As a total noob I've found his can be super helpful. I'd link you to it but UA-cam appears to be deleting any comment with a link in it.
The mod is called "What Did I Promise?"
i haven't heard of that one before. i'll take note of it!
What mod/setting do you use to get the food and production icons above the hexes?
check out tip #2 - above the mini-map there's map options - check "show yield icon"
Great video,at least I know what I'm buying now 🤣
welcome! this game is mad addicting... let me know if u have questions
Thanks man.
thats actually interesting cuz i find religion to be one of the harder ones. personally i find science the easiest
This turorial is incredible. Thank you for this, 5/5!
thank you :D
Wow love the way you explained The 4x. I have never had referred to like that and I have been playing his games since before World of Warcraft was Warcraft. I search games like this all the time I just thought their real-time strategy but they're actually not like that at all the 4X makes way more sense
lol! all i did was define it :) but i appreciate you checking out the vid and the kind words
Great video man. I’m a new player and this was definitely a big help. You got a new subscriber 👍
thanks my guy! appreciate the support :) been insanely busy but will try and get more vids out soon!
I just bought the civ 6 anthology on sale and was completely lost. Thank you!
let me know if u have questions!
It's kind of late but for yield options, you can also press "Y" for on and off
awesome to know!
Great video, thanks so much for making this. You're talented my man.
thanks brotha!
Whoah! How is this channel so small!? Subbed. Thanks for the tips. I completely understand why my secondary cities produced so badly.
thanks bro! appreciate you checking it out
My suggestion for new players is to play with Germany. Their production bonuses really make them a jack of all trades for any play style and victory
germany is a good pick. i think rome and japan are solid picks too
I just bought the game. I started and did not understand anything. I watched your video and played the game and still have no idea what im doing! great video btw!
lol! you'll get there! just keep at it
Thanks for the tips on barbarians especially. I played my first game last night and I ignored them until suddenly there’s 10 groups of them all on my borders.
classic barbarians haha
I literally started yesterday and man oh man I didnt understand what is going on but I guess that's the beauty of a new game
it can be a lot at first, but thankfully i think a lot of it feels very natural. just try stuff out and see how it goes!
Thanks for the advice. The only time I had played before was the mobile game like 7 years ago and I just got Civ 6 and had no clue what I was doing
good luck!
3am......as soon my freaking battering ram is built.....I'm going to bed...
Ok, ok....right after I get causus belli and declare war, I'm going to bed.....
.
RIGHT AFTER this battle, I'm going to bed......
then suddenly, you start hearing birds chirping
Played Civ 5 on PC years ago, decided to pick up Civ 6 on Switch during the dark days of the pandemic, and it’s such a pain in the ass compared to PC but I can’t stop myself from playing it.
just one more turn... I believe you're actually able to cloud save between Switch and PC so you can play the game no matter where you are!
Great video but please for the love of god EQ the audio to lower the high end frequencies. Everytime you make an ESS sound it sounds incredibly sharp.
definitely. appreciate the feedback and trying to improve still!
I shared this to a friend who's new to Civ 6 and always getting her ass beat, lol. I hope she finds it as helpful as I did!
appreciate it :D hopefully it helped
This was a great video. Thanks for the tips.
let me know if you have any questions!
Do you make and read off of scripts for your videos? Or is it all straight from the dome?
Great video.
depends on the video, but most of mine are scripted beforehand
Usually my main city I settle then let build 3 tiles in one direction before setting the city definitely 3 tiles away from the 3 tiles straight out for the main city
not a bad idea - definitely need to be flexible depending on how things play out though
its a shame that your "history behind the civ" videos got so few views compared to your game guides, because they're fascinating!
I agree! I still plan on doing some history vids but truly a shame they don't get much traction
New to this game and this vid was solid, nice work
thanks for checking it out! enjoy the game :)
i had this game for a year havent played it since aoe2 came t gamepass my friends became obsessed with strategy games then bought civ 6 i have slept like 4 hrs a day for the last week damn this game is good and im glad to see we figured out most of those beginner tips on our own throughout the week / 3 games xD
multiplayer civ is a whole nother animal!
thank you for not screaming like a buffoon like other channels
lol! ur not the first person to comment something like this but i gotta wonder... what civ youtubers are screaming? lmao
This really helped me out thanks! I just started the Mobile version of the game.
thanks for checking it out! hopefully the mobile version is the same
Great content! Although I’d consider getting a pop filter for your mic. Your S’s are really loud and distracting me from the content 😅
appreciate the feedback. i actually do have a pop filter, but i think maybe i need a new one or something because the S's bother me when im editing as well and i've been trying to reduce it more in recent videos
This is tremendous!! Btw what’s the name of the soundtrack?
It's the american theme in the game, you can search it on yt or play as America in civ
don't recall if it was America, but all the music is from the civ 6 soundtrack
I know I'm a little late. But I bought the anthology bundle and the tutorial didn't help much at all. I appreciate this video😁😁
thanks for checking it out!!
I have a challenge idea where you would start as the civ that is in the middle of the ocean has to cross a continent before settling to me that gives you a layout of the whole area plus he comes with extra units so that helps with any surrounding barbarians
with the maori?
My number 1 tip for anyone playing civ 6 is set a timer for yourself. Otherwise that one more turn will turn into 12 hours later.
lol! even with one you'll find yourself playing into the wee hours of the morning
such a chill video, love it!
thanks Santiago! appreciate it :)
200 turns in...yay muskets
THEY GOT SKYSCRAPERS
Thanks for this
lol!! in time you will dominate the world don't worry
Okay, i played my first game last night (or at least some of it) and the constant barbarian attacks plagued me until round 66. I started with two barbarian war camps super close, and a third that kept sending ships to destroy my fishing
gotta love barbs lmao. its ok - ur first game ever will have issues like that haha
Im still in this problem with a low military but atleast the kongo is pleased I am not a threat (the leader has the paranoid trait so my small army pleases him).
it'll take some practice, but it sounds like they started spawning and sending raiding parties. make sure to keep the scout away. might want to tech into archers too so you can get free shots off on them
some players also just let the barbarians attack their capital because barbs can't raze capitals. u could let them wear themselves down and take them out when they're low
Great video! Thank you for making it!
thank you for checking it out!
