Seeing Seal's band, David Byrne and Cocteau Twins "jam" together during the opening skit is truly something to behold... The 90's were truly something else !
And Cracker and Ali Farka Toure... all of these acts were fairly prominent... I saw the intro and thought they'd greenscreened together some of their favorite acts!
I've been infatuated with this band since I was anout 18. Im 53 now and still love listening to her, with her truly awesome and unique vocal stylings. But did you know that much of what she sings aren't words, but gibberish that fits into the song, inevitably making her voice into an instrument that compliments the rest of the band. I always thought I just couldn't understand or she was speaking in a different tongue, but no.....just some gibberish that fits with the music. ABSOLUTELY AMAZING BAND!!!❤🫡👍🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
I've just learned after 53 years, that what she's singing isn't words mixed with gibberish. She distorts her words until they're almost unrecognizable!!! I was today years old when I learned this.😮👍🏼🫡🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
I saw this live on TV as a 17 year old guitarist whose main interests then were heavy metal, classical guitar and The Police. I'd never seen nor heard anything like it before. I was mesmerised by all those gorgeous layered guitars and that amazing, otherworldly lady singing like I'd never heard anyone sing. 30 years on it's great to come back to the very show where I discovered The Cocteau Twins. Thanks @jeyemarchives for posting this and thanks Jools Holland for introducing me and no doubt many other unsuspecting people to the magic of The Cocteau Twins. Around the same time there was this lovely music on Fruitopia ads and I realised it was them. By the way, contrary to some other folks, I love this live version because Liz's vocal improvisations are fantastic. 🙂
The most beautiful way to listen to vocal music. Devoid of the tyranny of your language. Let the music suggest the meaning. Be uplifted, free and loved,
Maravilhoso ! Viva Elizabeth Fraser ! Viva Cocteau Twins! Viva Jools Holland ! Viva a Escócia, Viva Glasgow ! Viva o dialeto Celta !!!!
Liz's vocal 🤍 Robin's guitar, even in the initial group jam ! 🎸 🤍 2025 Cocteau's reform 🙏 "Later with Jools" Special :) Cocteau Twins perform Blue Bell Knoll In it's entirety 💙
I think she felt uncomfortable, when in a live studio event such as this, it can be hard to get the gear set up as you want. Sometimes it's difficult to hear yourself and it can be really difficult to get the nuance of the tune and you can start to panic. You could tell she was upset, but like a true pro she kept it together and carried on. The worst thing about this dilemma is the audience don't know about such things and blame you and think you can't sing anymore. It's impossible to sing well if you can't hear yourself.
I love Liz Fraser’s voice. And I’d include Cocraue songs in some of my favourite of all time. But I can’t help feeling that they’d have been a very difficult band to enjoy seeing live.
you either get it or you dont with the Cocteau's..... i get it, i have done since the 80s. Even now, i can't make a playlist without sneaking in at least one Cocteau Twin track... they simply make me happy when i'm sad :)
Massive CT fan from the start but when EF started to go off script like this it was the beginning of the end. It was like she was getting bored with it.
God tv studios were a black hole for sound back then. Couldn’t up the mike on Liz or already maxed? She was singing fine despite not able to hear herself.
I suppose it's an edit I had to make so I could put the rest of the performance online. Probably Summerhead is available on Later's official site or sth.
I think she’s trying to lock into her monitor to get a bearing on her own vocals in the overall band’s mix. This would have been pre-IEM so maybe angling her physical ear toward to floor monitor at her feet?
if only she could have had a really decent band behind her. That voice when coupled with artists like Massive Attack and FSOL shows what could have been without Robin's ponderous frippery.
4:42 if you want to see Cocteau Twins.
Thank you. I don't mind Jools Holland, (and I love Squeeze), but doesn't he go on?!
he's a fn genius without ego who loves music and musicians
Yeah. Jeez Jools get on with it! Self indulgent nonsense...then finally the Cocteaus.
Cheers. Lovely quality, but, as others have said, too much intro in the clip.
Spot on, good show but Christ, Jools would eat himself if he could. At least he didn't take over the keyboards this time.
Elizabeth is truly amazing I’ve always been and continue to be a huge fan of her amazing work.
Didn’t Mark E Smith have it specifically written into their agreement that he’d refrain from this if The Fall ever performed on his show
When Liz sang, "Ah-bububububububuuuu," I felt that.
😂💜
I feel the same way about your mum

She is spectacular.
this is the best live version thanks for posting it
The one on Jay Leno is really good, too. I prefer Summerhead from Jools but it isn't on here.
@@eboethrasher we all like different ones
Crazy how she can sing arpeggios like that.
Seeing Seal's band, David Byrne and Cocteau Twins "jam" together during the opening skit is truly something to behold... The 90's were truly something else !
I skipped forward to see the band!
What greatness under one roof.
And Cracker and Ali Farka Toure... all of these acts were fairly prominent... I saw the intro and thought they'd greenscreened together some of their favorite acts!
That evening 600,000 birds of all species alighted upon the studio rooftop.

Greath traditional band. Fantastic albums during the eighties. Elisabeth Fraser is a fantastic singer, just as the other ones.
Traditional? Huh? Bollocks
"Traditional" may be the least appropriate word I've ever heard used to describe Cocteau Twins.

anything sounds "good" when you swim it in reverb
Aaahhhhhh...'Carolyn's Fingers' makes me happy to this day. Gen-X was the best!
Q hermoso...
Fascinante y eternos.

I used to play this for my 2 sons when they were younger (15 yrs ago) and tell them that I’d pay them $1.00 for each word they could understand.
How much did that end up costing you? $0.00 I'd guess, unless you know Scottish Gaelic and taught them :-)
I remember her back in 1984, my god thats 40 years ago
Naw, mate. It's 30. I know that for a fact.

What a gem! Thanks for uploading.
Saw Cocteau twins Elizabeth Fraser that same year in NYC, Roseland Ballroom, outstanding show from my fave Scottish band since the pink opaque album
Lucky u !
Love this band so much , the songs just give you so much feelng through out your body

Koukooboros mating" in high trees' the language of natures dance. Beautiful.
Forever!❤
Oh wow I would of loved to seen the whole show!
Jools show had some decent bands on but he’d ruin it by wanting to play boogie woogie piano over everyone’s stuff
🤣👌🏻
I would have loved to see him try and play boogie woogie piano over The Cocteau Twins!
True
Indeed ...a bit arrogant ,the I never understood how proud he was to be associated with Squeeze..they got on my tits too lol
He enjoyed the sound of his own voice!
Very difficult to play the Cocteau Twins music live. That is the line-up I saw at the Brixton Academy.
Liz's vocal 🤍

But an interesting and valid comment.
Appreciated 😊
She still can. Check her latest work with Sun's Signature.
Sister of Light! tears tears tears! 😍😍
Saw them support OMD at the Hammersmith Odeon in 1983 - Amazing
What a totally amazing, talent studded lineup. Compare to what “later“ has become now. It’s the absolute pits.
Cant quite hear her!
I remember watching this and being horrified by Liz’s vocals… on reflection, it was more confused than anything else!
Pretty stellar line-up Jools !
I used to watch Jools religiously when I lived in London in the late 90s. They don't make shows like that anymore.
Great show!! sigh, good old times..
How the EFF! did I miss this? WOW!
Robin even made that intro transcendental...😁
He’s so damn cool
BBC really destroyed the audio on that
I think Jools had a few cocktails that evening. Ok...more than a few.
The Cocteau Quinns
The balm is divine!
Nothing quite like drowning a spectacular voice in 4 electric guitars.
What a lineup !!! Incredible.
The Cocteau Queens ))))))))
The guitars sound gorgeous, but.... Liz needed to be heard (or her live vocal compressed more). Her voice got a bit lost
Took the mantle of best music programme from the whistle test
Very good
The Eye above them, notice.
Angelic gift of the gab.
Wonderful and I want to see the David Byrne set as well😉👍
I posted it here a few weeks ago : ua-cam.com/video/SX6izkRYcTw/v-deo.html
Good to see Guthrie giving him some feedback on making 2 mistakes in the intro

Agreed 🤝 Love them or hate them
Wonderful stuff.
I’m surprised that Jules isn’t twatting on his piano with them and spoiling everything.
....After which for about 10 years various 'shoegaze' bands attempted to achieve the same thing with varying degrees of failure.
She sounds like Upsy Daisy from 'In the Night Garden' here
That night the man in the moon was smiling

can you ever have enough guitars? Nah......by the way, the sound for this particular video is amazing
Did he announced the "Cocktail Twins"?

Never a minor chord shallt thou play!
How the hell Jools Holland sustains a career as a presenter, I'll never know!
He’s truly dreadful, isn’t he!
Liz is way too low in the mix. unacceptable for this show.
The mix is bad in general.
Ah, the episode I 'discovered' Ali Farke Toure
Loved this show in the nineties but JH was a strange little man.
Eargasm
Only a myth an urban legend
Como se llama esta cancion....?
carolyns fingers
i guess they didn't have time to sound check liz's vocals
Liz needs to gig more. Obviously doesn't need the cash!
WOW
Are there any live performances of Cocteau Twins songs that Liz Frazier didn't just have a fuckin seizure at the microphone?
I reckon she was coked up, or as I’ve heard, went haywire to piss off Robin? Who knows
Most of her performances before Four Calendar Cafe are wonderful. This album is when her and Robin were breaking up and they were both on drugs.
too many guitars come on
cant understand a word
!
I still refuse to believe that she is singing in English language... Although I love her with all my heart and soul ❤️

It is missing Summerhead... I appreciate the other stuff I've never seen but Summerhead is kind of important, ya know.
