Haven't listened to them for almost twenty years, a lot of hard things came crashing down and I became so hard, but my precious wife stuck by my side (the most beautiful soul I've ever encountered, on this side of the Mortal Coil, that is...but that's a long story: I'll say this, though, I don't "believe" in Heaven, I absolutely know it exists, nothing and no one can ever take that away now...went from having my spine crashed in a car accident and being paralyzed in one leg and unable to really use the other one broke my neck in 3 places, was told I'd NEVER walk again, and would soon lose bowel and bladder control...one day, after a particularly deep look into my own soul, I just began weeping so hard that I collapsed, I thought my heart had literally burst inside of me...I can't entirely explain what happened next, but out of a darkness I knew to be eternal and infinite, a fragrant, oily fire came pouring down on my soul, and I was met...I don't feel comfortable giving all the details, but I can say that the most BEAUTIFUL Woman I've ever encountered - beyond imagination, there are truly no words - looked into my eyes with the deepest love and kindest, deepest pity, and picked me up, continuing to gaze into my eyes. More radiant the Sun, Her face, and purer than Pure...I saw and heard so much more, but can't really share it, too personal, and really beyond words, but all the thrashed, beaten, cut, empty, and torn parts of my soul were filled with absolute light and love so solid and powerful that every hurt I ever had was erased, and I never wanted to leave Her arms...when I eventually "came back" to my body, not only could I walk again, but I went out to my backyard and did a backflip on my trampoline, something I hadn't done in over 25 years: you should have seen the look on my wife and childrens' faces!) In any event, I'll never be the same again, and listening to music like this reminds me of that haunting, lovely beauty, and draws tears out of my eyes once again (did I mention I couldn't stop crying - from the joy of having my body restored, but also the sadness of having to leave that Light and all the loving Souls there who love with One Heart, One Mind, and One Spirit?) Hey turning 30 was the best thing that ever happened to me. I first heard this song a couple weeks after I turned 30, in the Las Vegas airport. Tired as fuck from Vegas. I turn 31 next month. Life is crazy. Never too old.
Yes! I never thought of this song that way but it has an element of contemplation during a moment of fleeting beauty and joy. One of my all-time favorite songs.
For those asking about her lip movements not matching the sounds-as a professional musician I think I can answer this. Her angelic voice is treated with heavy effects: reverb being most obvious, maybe some delay and possibly a harmonizing effect. It’s partly why she sounds so otherworldly. And what can happen in the studio is, if the singer can hear these affects in their headphones, they sing to and enunciate according to how the sound comes back to them. So, lets take the phrase Las Vegas-Liz clearly isn’t enunciating the GAS part in the word, as the delay and reverb is still flowing from the previous phrase. So she’s leaving space for the effects to breathe. Make sense? It sounds like she’s singing something like “It must be heaven or Las Vegooooowowow’ and letting the last syllable and note be carried away in a wash of effects. It’s a very, very beautiful and compelling way to sing. She is a Celtic goddess.
@@fruitypeebils people have become so conditioned to be combative on the internet that it's become their norm to be guns blazing yet completely unprovoked. The last place i'd expect that type of goading is a cocteau twins comment section. What exactly do you think the purpose of a comment section is? A place for you to shame those for posting a comment that was relevant to the content? So are we only expected to post a comment if someone asks for it? Did anyone ask for your input before you chose to go down the condescending route? I was at brewery this weekend called Humble Sea in Santa Cruz, CA. This song came on and I was instantly captivated. I had heard of Cocteau Twins my whole life but never heard their music. The music, the breeze, the sun, the beer with my wife on a day off to do nothing but chill and talk. Can't stop listening it to.
I hope someday the Cocteau Twins will get more credit for evolving music than they already have. The notion of using language as an instrument has never been more commercially proven. They sold millions of songs where no one knew exactly what they were listening to, and still loving every minute of it. There is opera, and other musical forms where listeners aren't quite sure what language they're listening to, but CT struck a special cord. They influenced generations immediately, in the now, based on pure impact and emotion.

Tonight, UA-cam suggested this video, and it's the first one I've ever watched after listening for 25 years. Watching Liz now is like hearing her for the first time in '97. I could watch this forever. Liz, if you ever come across this, thank you so much for what you've done. (Robin and Simon, you, too.)

Ok I am losing my mind I thought she was singing in another language. I just googled lyrics and it is in fact, english words being sung. I'm officially obsessed with this song.
before the internet became a big thing, ive always wondered what she was singing about and almost thought really, that there was two vocalists. but found out it was just the one. Some of the words are in a different language and just muttering or something relatable to english. but yes, ive struggled for a long time to know what she was singing about until their website came into being. which in fact people had pieced together bits and pieces of what she was singing. But even then as Ms. Frazer has put it even she had made up words. but they are still beautiful to hear, even if she is not singling anything tangible at times. They continue to be one of my favorite bands.

I used to listen to this album in it’s entirety to try to cope with my ex dumping me. Everything was a reminder of our past. I stopped listening to music but this was the only thing that helped me through the pain and reminded me how much music can help one heal.
I first met Cocteau Twins, in various cities in the United States, at after show parties (backstage), during the tour for HOLV. As people they came off as just ordinary people, who made the most extraordinary music. Robin was the one who introduced me to Elizabeth. It was the 2nd time backstage that I met Simon. A lot of great memories from that tour. I asked Robin if they could play my home town, Cleveland, the next time they toured. We met, again, during the FCC tour, and not only did they add Cleveland, but Ohio was the only state that had 3 shows. They gave me tickets and backstage access to quite a few of those shows. Again, a lot of great memories. I love their music, and I loved them as people.
Loved them for almost 30 years now. This album still inspires me the same way it did when I was in high school....Iceblink Luck...Fifty-Fifty Clown...Cherry-Coloured Funk :) Just perfection...
I know purist fans will say this one is too commercial or glossy, but this whole album is one of my top ten of all times. It soars--I have listened to it thousands of times, it still lifts me up like few others. This is a band plugged into worlds most of us just dream of.
I first discovered this song when I was living in Madrid... and would play it over and over and over and walk the Grand Via looking at how beautiful everything was. It's so moving!
The entire album, Heaven or Las Vegas has no bad tracks. Just a bunch of random rhythmic psychedelic sounds and rhythms with this beautiful voice floating in and out. You just get lost in it. The last song is a hell of an ending song to close the album. It has to be heard to be believed.
This was the song that sealed CT for me as a band. I had liked previous releases, but this one just hit. When it started playing on college/independent radio I couldn't get enough of it.

@@fruitypeebils yes, someone in the comments in fact DID mention it. Why in earth would I have posted this, if not?
@@privace8111 thank you.
And then they could always just splice in another vocal track entirely and scrub the live one.
There's a lot of angst out there and i get it, but perhaps redirect it towards those who screwed you and not some rando on youtube offering an interesting take.
Glad you're big enough to recognise that. I kept this comment short n sweet just the way you like it.
The MOST underrated Scottish band of all time!!!!
Boudosaved its really not underrated
i’d say the associates are
Josef K
the associates more so
Cocteau Twins and The Blue Nile
I can’t believe I’ve only just discovered this song today. I’m 40 years old, I should have heard this by now. On my 6th listen. Incredible music
Hope you enjoy the rest of their stuff! They've been my favourite band for twelve years now
Don't feel bad, my first listen was 2015 at the age of 29 and I was blind sided by it. Couldn't believe I missed it and just how incredible and beautiful it was. Its just on a whole other level.
Listen to Bluebeard
im 44 when I first heard this. Today actually. But I knew Cocteau Twins. I love discovering timeless gems.
Makes you feel like you missed out on your youth and could go back doesn't it?
I was at brewery this weekend called Humble Sea in Santa Cruz, CA. This song came on and I was instantly captivated. I had heard of Cocteau Twins my whole life but never heard their music. The music, the breeze, the sun, the beer with my wife on a day off to do nothing but chill and talk. Can't stop listening it to.
Hey you might like a band called the Doublejumps if you like Cocteau Twins
I totally adore this song. Partially because I think they had no idea what they were singing, which makes it that much more real 🎶
I need to find more people that like songs like this
Hi! U found 1
I love this song so much since last year!

These women have voices like an angel. The first time I heard them I was young and free, at the very beginning of a lifetime journey....Years have passed since that moment and their music is still with me in heart and mind.....
Just one woman. Elizabeth Fraser, the Scottish nightingale.
Ha! One lady, really.

Arguably the greatest song ever written by a trio...or a duo.
this was playing on the speakers at the las vegas airport last time i landed there and it was one of the best music moments i've ever had. thanks airport music curator and thanks cocteau twins
I had the same experience!!
@@heatherl1544 reminds me of how brian eno music for airports used to play at airports. Nothing beats curated airport music.
@@mrfish4lyfe amen... I work here at the airport 🛫 in Las Vegas and most of the music has Vegas in it... but that song was other worldly and I was smitten... 🥲
Never even knew it existed until last month... crazy right?
Man I tell you. I could listen to an endless loop of shoegaze and dream pop forever and never get bored.
The slide guitar bridge alone makes this song incredible. Elizabeth's singing, of course, is perfection.
She channels the timeless divine, the eternal universe.. She sings as an angel would.
This song is ethereal magic...
There is a place deep in my heart for this music. It's beyond music. This is a message. It sounds so heavenly. It is so right
Sounds so las vegasly
Elisabeth Fraser is my icon of an female vocal! She's voice is incredible!Greetings from Russia!!!
If this isn't playing in Heaven, I'm leaving
Discovered the Twins through this song in a cold autumnal afternoon several years ago. Never thought they would change my whole existence!
If you hear it, you've changed.....
That’s deep
This might be one of the most underrated songs of the 90s. So ahead of it's time and even today sounds incredible.
You haven't a clue and you are very ignorant. There is nothing "underrated" here.
This band got me through some pretty hard times, and it’s not hard to see why
Liz Fraser , vocal goddess
Maybe, most possibly the most beautiful pop tune ever expressed from the human race. O M G
Light Bright I think that would be Carolynn’s Fingers actually
this song is a dream
It's 2022, and I've listened to the Cocteau Twins since 1997 when I first found them. I've always just listened and enjoyed the music and Liz's voice.
I hear,
"Singin' on a famous street,
I want to love a beau that won't love me.
Am I just in heaven or Las Vegas?
'Cos you're the more brighter than the sun is to me"
Only Elizabeth Fraser really knows.
Fantastic work of art, exhilaratingly performed.
This song was released in 1990, how did I just discover it in Dec 2016? I've lived a sheltered life. Now my eyes are open.
My god this is beautiful...
Because you are not hip enough. Everybody who was anybody was totally into this band back in 1986
Found it in 1992, essentially the contemporary era. Thank God.
"You have taken your first step into a larger world."
that made me smile
Never bothered to check out their music (i've known about them for ages though) until yesterday when it just popped into my YT recommended videos. Instantly hooked.
This song will always make me cry. Truth was, at this time Elizabeth Fraser was pregnant and so happy for that! The sound of brilliant busting out glorious will ever haunt my heart.
I’m completely transfixed by this song; by its dreaminess and by its artistic production.
Been There... Done That. Yeshua is OUR Way Back to Our Father in the Place We really want and need to be. Just an excellent concert.
I've once seen someone describe this song as "Dancing Queen in space" and I can't get over it. That's so spot on!
I always described it as ABBA on acid!
Still beautiful after all of these years. Still brings tears to the eyes.
I love her voice and the music is so dreamy. I remember them from jr. high and high school back in the 80's. Now my 14 yr. old daughter is listening to them 40 years later. The Cocteau Twins have transcended time.
And I just discovered them in 2024, nice find!
I've always been unable to decipher any lyrics of any band, it's a relief to listen to such wonderful music such as that of the Cocteau Twins and not be expected to understand their lyrics...
Robert Smith loves this band and so do I🖤
I so love this band
One of the most evocative songs I've ever heard. May you be blessed enough to have discovered this during a memorable time in your life, it takes you instantly back.
Pull him away
Jealous so with me
Go there for new
For new things there
Singing of a famous street
I want to love, I've all the wrong glory
But is it Heaven or Las Vegas?
But you're much more brighter than the sun is to me
He's a hustler
It's a role he'll never make suit
Hang on to this
Stay and stay and fail and fail
Pull him away
Jealous so with me
Go there for new
For new things there
Singing of a famous street
I want to love, I've all the wrong glory
But is it Heaven or Las Vegas?
But you're much more brighter than the sun is to me
Reaching this itch in my soul
Is like any good playing card
Must be why I'm thinking of Las Vegas
Why it's more brighter than the sun is to me
Carnivals are bluster loud
I'm dizzy so I go under the 'Big Dipper'
Cum fantasy for a carnival
How fitting before a wedding
Singing of a famous street
I want to love, I've all the wrong glory
But is it Heaven or Las Vegas?
But you're much more brighter than the sun is to me
Reaching this itch in my soul
Is like any good playing card
Must be why I'm thinking of Las Vegas
Why it's more brighter than the sun is to me
Maybe then you will swear
This is hardly personal
I suspect I'm singing to a tune
And still find that beats singing to your sone
🙏
I really needed this
OR...
"Heaven Or Las Vegas"
Who'll ever win?
Gee, you're just so ephemeral
Go back for new
For new in vain, it failed
Singing on the famous street
I want to love me
Am I just in heaven or Las Vegas
It's so much more brighter than the sun is to me
He's a hustler
It's a role, he'll never make a suit
Hang on to this
So stay and spin and fail and fail
Who'll ever win?
Gee, you're just so ephemeral
Go back for new
For new in vain, it failed
Singing on the famous street
I want to love me
Am I just in heaven or Las Vegas
It's so much more brighter than the sun is to me
The chill must itch in my soul
That's like any old playing card
It must be why I'm thinking of Las Vegas
It's why it's more brighter than the sun is to me
Furthermore, let's blast it off
I'm dizzy so I go, another bit it off
Come fantasy, for a carnival
I'm empty before our wedding
Singing on the famous street
I want to love me
Am I just in heaven or Las Vegas
It's so much more brighter than the sun is to me
The chill must itch in my soul
That's like any old playing card
It must be why I'm thinking of Las Vegas
It's why it's more brighter than the sun is to me
Maybe there, while you was rail
I'll go in and seize your heart and be personal
I suspect I'm singing to you a tune
And still you find the beat and sing it to you soon

Ok I am losing my mind I thought she was singing in another language. I just googled lyrics and it is in fact, english words being sung. I'm officially obsessed with this song.
Yup, keep in mind also there has never been official lyrics, so the one's you find online are interpretations by fans.
They’re phrased very odd during the whole album
before the internet became a big thing, ive always wondered what she was singing about and almost thought really, that there was two vocalists. but found out it was just the one. They continue to be one of my favorite bands.
you can not imagine what was like to see them live in the 80-early 90s
She is talking about gambling and las vegas, believe it or not
The Cocteau Twins can save me from my misery
You already know
Nelson DaSilva ME TOO or a 45caliber or m choice BLACK MAMBA
Montgomery Denzer What is it with this song that conjures up sadness and a keenness to end it? The melody and strangely inapplicable lyrics just makes me think this would not be a bad way to go out of this world and into the next.
Nelson DaSilva While this is great I still think Brian Eno is better "exit music"
Montgomery Denzer like DAM BROOOOOOOOOOO
I bought this album in the 90’s. It was and still is one of my favorites to listen to. “You’re the match of Jericho…”
those swirling guitars get me
and that voice! A+
god bless 4ad, i grew up on the streets of nyc, 4ad helped raise me. liz is a goddess, the cocteau twins were my religion. all of you who feel the same, i am so with you
By the time this song was in fashion, my mom was waiting for me to be born. She have always been such a musical person; I like to think that maybe I used to listen this song inside my mother's womb and since then I'd like it so much. It realeses the deepest dreamy side of me. Cocteau Twins is my biggets musical find from 2020.
Remember when this gem came out - the most gorgeous, captivating voice in the history of popular music. Perfect
Hard to listen to. Reminds me of early college days. Being with a girl I loved. Had some problems but things just felt right. This one takes me back. Beautiful song and band.
Everything you said brother, it's all that for me. Peace
Wow so I’m not the only one. This song always takes me back to that crazy hot girl I was in love with.
This is not Las Vegas. This is Heaven.
A friend of mine gave me a K-7 record of Treasure back in 90...I listened the whole night like I just have found a secret precious stone! Couldnt wait to show my sister, who refused to listen to it ...but after she did, she got so hooked on Cocteau she couldn't listen to anything else for years...bought all their albums..
almost 30 years later, its still incredible to realize how Divine Cocteau is...
conclusion: this music must come from Heaven and Liz Fraser must be an Angel!
legend has it that to this day even the singer does not have a clue what she is singing about
i hope life is good for you folks
Best wishes to you

This song sounds like an eerie replication of something stunningly beautiful like it's trying to trick you. It's haunting
Cocteau twins had a sound of their own! Love this.
I used to listen to this album in it’s entirety to try to cope with my ex dumping me. Everything was a reminder of our past. I stopped listening to music but this was the only thing that helped me through the pain and reminded me how much music can help one heal.
I've no idea what she's on about but what a glorious noise.
😅 lol
This song is the best metaphor for every failed relationship. It is the tragic beauty of miscommunication eloquted through song and verse.
Every song on this album is such a treasure, not a single weak point on the damn thing. My favorite album.
I love their music, and I loved them as people.
lucky you...
Loved them for almost 30 years now. This album still inspires me the same way it did when I was in high school....Iceblink Luck...Fifty-Fifty Clown...Cherry-Coloured Funk :) Just perfection...
Thanks for the in depth on your post rock groupie memories.
Smashing! So happy for you, I'm sure those are great memories to treasure.
Yeah? And how was the cocaine?

I know purist fans will say this one is too commercial or glossy, but this whole album is one of my top ten of all times. It soars--I have listened to it thousands of times, it still lifts me up like few others. This is a band plugged into worlds most of us just dream of.
I was in that boat for quite a long time and I still prefer the weird dissonant 80's stuff but this has grown on me.
It wasn't too commercial in America, only going to no. 99 on Billboard. No one ever accused us of having good taste.
I love HOLV, never thought it was commercial. But I suppose compared to Victoria land, but I still prefer HOLV.
This full album is incredible. I like every song. That’s rare.
I first discovered this song when I was living in Madrid... and would play it over and over and over and walk the Grand Via looking at how beautiful everything was. It's so moving!

WOW! How did I live this long and totally miss this band?! They kind of have a “Cure” vibe. I feel like I seriously missed something!
I have days when I play every Cocteau Twins album back to back....I LOVE THEM.
This was the song that sealed CT for me as a band. I had liked previous releases, but this one just hit. When it started playing on college/independent radio I couldn't get enough of it.
