For those asking about her lip movements not matching the sounds-as a professional musician I think I can answer this. Her angelic voice is treated with heavy effects: reverb being most obvious, maybe some delay and possibly a harmonizing effect. It’s partly why she sounds so otherworldly. And what can happen in the studio is, if the singer can hear these affects in their headphones, they sing to and enunciate according to how the sound comes back to them. So, lets take the phrase Las Vegas-Liz clearly isn’t enunciating the GAS part in the word, as the delay and reverb is still flowing from the previous phrase. So she’s leaving space for the effects to breathe. Make sense? It sounds like she’s singing something like “It must be heaven or Las Vegooooowowow’ and letting the last syllable and note be carried away in a wash of effects. It’s a very, very beautiful and compelling way to sing. She is a Celtic goddess.

Ok I am losing my mind I thought she was singing in another language. I just googled lyrics and it is in fact, english words being sung. I'm officially obsessed with this song.
before the internet became a big thing, ive always wondered what she was singing about and almost thought really, that there was two vocalists. but found out it was just the one. Some of the words are in a different language and just muttering or something relatable to english. but yes, ive struggled for a long time to know what she was singing about until their website came into being. which in fact people had pieced together bits and pieces of what she was singing. But even then as Ms. Frazer has put it even she had made up words. but they are still beautiful to hear, even if she is not singling anything tangible at times. They continue to be one of my favorite bands.
These women have voices like an angel. The first time I heard them I was young and free, at the very beginning of a lifetime journey....Years have passed since that moment and their music is still with me in heart and mind.....
I first met Cocteau Twins, in various cities in the United States, at after show parties (backstage), during the tour for HOLV. As people they came off as just ordinary people, who made the most extraordinary music. Robin was the one who introduced me to Elizabeth. It was the 2nd time backstage that I met Simon. A lot of great memories from that tour. I asked Robin if they could play my home town, Cleveland, the next time they toured. We met, again, during the FCC tour, and not only did they add Cleveland, but Ohio was the only state that had 3 shows. They gave me tickets and backstage access to quite a few of those shows. Again, a lot of great memories. I love their music, and I loved them as people.

When this album came out, I was a sophomore in high school, and spent dozens of hours in sitting at the 24 hour Lyon’s smoking way too many cigarettes, drinking 75 cent coffee and arguing with my friends about what the fuck she was saying. That was so much fun, and it makes me a little sad that the convenience of “google” means that we can’t really do that anymore.

I'm a 30 year old guy who heard this song for the first time just a few months ago, but it is already very special to me. ***WAYY TOO LONG STORY TIME*** We went to Vegas for a bachelor party weekend for one of my best friends and had an amazing time (you can imagine). Me and one friend got an earlier 5:30 AM Sunday flight out of there to be cheap. We stayed up all night at the Cosmo having so much fun that we still managed to miss our flight (barely), so then we had to be in the airport until 1:30 PM for our new flight. We had just got to our new gate at 6 AM, almost no one else in our terminal. My friend lays down to take a nap on the ground next to our stuff, exhausted, and defeated. I'm just sitting nearby, unable to sleep. I'm drunk, high, and hungover all at the same time. I'm miserable but somehow very happy at the same time, mindlessly watching the sunrise outside the terminal window. At that moment, this song starts playing over the speakers (of course just because it has Las Vegas in the name), but my ears immediately perk up right when it starts with that verse groove. It was so quiet in there that I could hear the music super clearly, and I just thought the vibe was immaculate (and I was right). I held my phone up in the air to Shazam it, listened to it a few more times, eventually went to the bar for SEVERAL hours and then we flew home. Now, and for the rest of my life, this song will take me right back to those 5 minutes in the empty terminal, and then to that great weekend with my bros. ***TLDR=This song reminds me of a good weekend I had in Vegas once***

Scary to think that more than a quarter century has passed since this was released. I’m still conjuring up new lyrics in my head to this incredibly lush and gorgeous track.
I remember buying this in 1990 on cassette tape and I was deeply in love with my first girlfriend at the time and made a lovely soundtrack to how I felt at the time. I’m 57 now and still listening to it.
I just tried finding it out and all sources are different so it's not worth it😭 whatever you interpret, just sing it because nobody knows the true lyrics except them haha
In history classes in the future, kids are going to be like: "So the aliens tried to communicate with us before back in the 1990s and people just put them on the radio?"
Liz is stunning in person, saw them live,in NYC 4 calendar cafe,I have all cds from pink opaque to today.ethereal vocals takes me to another place of peace an happiness
Perhaps my favorite song ever, this is reminiscent of my summer of 1990, having just relocated from Chicago to Auburn Alabama for grad school. This song has always meant hope and gratitude for me.

Liz was influenced by Bulgarian female folk choirs. I really hear it in this track. It's really impressive. That otherworldly earthiness. There are some really great recordings of these folk tunes. "The Mystery of Bulgarian Voices"
I just wanna say thanks for recommending this. I absolutely hear the inspiration, too. It's also prominent in I Wear Your Ring, probably my favorite song on the album because of the textured vocals.
世界で一番美しい人間 That is a wonderful song. I believe the soloist is a Mezzo Soprano. I've heard other vocalists manipulate the voice like that sounding like a bonafide wind instrument it is. "Chamakay" by Blood Orange for instance
@@世界で一番美しい人間 Yes! I was just looking that up. "The Evening Gathering". I got this cassette for free 30 years ago. think that's the song I want to hear in my head when I have to leave our Earth. : )
A dear childhood friend, who came out to me before anyone else in her universe, loves this band - at least as much as I do! How we would love Liz and the boys to reconcile in our lifetimes and tour their beautiful, beautiful music. Any and every 3 minute burst is sheer joy and optimism - Lord, how we need a bit of that in this current world!
just woke up after talking with one of my oldest friends until the sun went up about childhood, mostly his childhood in the 80ies in italy, this is perfect. will listen for 3 times in a row, then go for a walk.
In 1993, I would listen to this like 8 times in a row and wonder if it was strange I was tearing up the whole time. Had done the same thing but with earlier songs in 1987 after high school. Guess I was looking for something different which seemed acheivable at the time but which was not eventually. Revisited later, same feelings but still not REAL though unfortunately for me. Hope it can be for someone else. The place they evoke...not sure what it is. Closest I can get is playing the songs on guitar. Finding a singer like Liz could help?
Believe it or not, it seems to be "all the wrong glory" in the lines "Singing of a famous street I want to love, I've all the wrong glory". I just looked up the lyrics, I guess this is right? The rest of them seem right. Searched for "heaven or las vegas lyrics" and it came right up without having to go to any other page. Other pages are the same though.
I hope someday the Cocteau Twins will get more credit for evolving music than they already have. The notion of using language as an instrument has never been more commercially proven. They sold millions of songs where no one knew exactly what they were listening to, and still loving every minute of it. There is opera, and other musical forms where listeners aren't quite sure what language they're listening to, but CT struck a special cord. They influenced generations immediately, in the now, based on pure impact and emotion.
2:01 "Maybe then you will swear This is hardly personal I suspect I'm singing to a tune And still find that beats singing to your soon" A Melodic Genius.
I love her voice and the music is so dreamy. I remember them from jr. high and high school back in the 80's. Now my 14 yr. old daughter is listening to them 40 years later. The Cocteau Twins have transcended time.
This entire album takes me back to the 90s. My first husband and I (he died in 07) would dance and make love to this CD. Every song is perfection and in its entirety this album is a masterpiece. Unlike humans, this never gets old. Many blessings to all ❤
The ambient effects of this (their most prominent tune) will be reflected in future songs dedicated to Heaven, not their earthly city of sand that slips into the sea...eventually The definition of Power Dream Pop.

one of the greatest indie bands ever
The slide guitar bridge alone makes this song incredible. Elizabeth's singing, of course, is perfection.
Looping this last night and this morning to escape some temporary stress. Its working like a charm..
those swirling guitars get me
and that voice! A+
One of the greatest songs of all time 💯
Scary to think that more than a quarter century has passed since this was released. I’m still conjuring up new lyrics in my head to this incredibly lush and gorgeous track.
Every song on this album is such a treasure, not a single weak point on the damn thing. My favorite album.
when will they be conducted into the music hall of fame?
never...but it does not matter when you can hear angels singin`like that...
What metal is the best conductant
No absolutely not
I remember buying this in 1990 on cassette tape and I was deeply in love with my first girlfriend at the time and made a lovely soundtrack to how I felt at the time. I’m 57 now and still listening to it.
In love with her eyes.
I don't understand why sarcastic brits are capable of making the prettiest music on earth
you mean the sarcastic english. the music comes from ireland, scotland and wales.
Scot. Mari-Ahten flows through her.
This is the only song that i never dared to look up the lyrics. I dont want to lose its magic!
I just tried finding it out and all sources are different so it's not worth it😭 whatever you interpret, just sing it because nobody knows the true lyrics except them haha
In history classes in the future, kids are going to be like:
"So the aliens tried to communicate with us before back in the 1990s and people just put them on the radio?"
This might be more true than you may realize
This is the lost Irish language Gailic
It's 2020, whose still listening to this awesome band!!?
Me!!
Ben, moi, pourquoi ? ;)
And 2021
been listening since i was a freshman in highschool. 2015 to now :)
Cocteau Twins are so precious to me...
Lost my soulmate on the 6th of December and exactly a month later, my Gran...
Thank you for the music...🌹
Those ice blue eyes.
tossedpenny those are invoked eyes, The Siren saga
Kirk Douglas hahaha I was tripping this guy at the record store out the other day talking about Jeff Buckley and wolf in the breast.
Liz is stunning in person, saw them live,in NYC 4 calendar cafe,I have all cds from pink opaque to today.ethereal vocals takes me to another place of peace an happiness
@@pylongate3343 heartbreaking Jeff died.but the song with Liz is stupendous
Perhaps my favorite song ever, this is reminiscent of my summer of 1990, having just relocated from Chicago to Auburn Alabama for grad school. This song has always meant hope and gratitude for me.
I bought this CD the minute it came out in 1990. It is a chapter in my life, an unforgettibly good one. What happened to us?
We got really old.. but we have the best taste in music 💖
Doble nueve o radio miraflores pasaban rock alternativo , new wave buena epoca
Liz was influenced by Bulgarian female folk choirs. I really hear it in this track. It's really impressive. That otherworldly earthiness. There are some really great recordings of these folk tunes. "The Mystery of Bulgarian Voices"
Underrated comment. "Kalimankou Denkou" is one of my favorite song ever.
Oh wow so cool! I always wondered what music she listened to. I definitely hear it!
@@世界で一番美しい人間 Yes! I was just looking that up. "The Evening Gathering". I got this cassette for free 30 years ago. think that's the song I want to hear in my head when I have to leave our Earth. : )
Takes me back to when life was so much simpler and every song meant so much! Another fabulously underrated band, beauty in vocal form x
When the word "Masterpiece" is not even close to how good this is.
Cocteau Twins Forever ♥️
Cada vez que los escucho me provocan la misma emoción. Increíble la calidad de este grupo
What emotion is that , FOR me it's a calm , peaceful , hopeful . After the darkness comes the light 🕯️
que es esa emoción?
In 1993, I would listen to this like 8 times in a row and wonder if it was strange I was tearing up the whole time. Had done the same thing but with earlier songs in 1987 after high school. Guess I was looking for something different which seemed acheivable at the time but which was not eventually. Revisited later, same feelings but still not REAL though unfortunately for me. Hope it can be for someone else. The place they evoke...not sure what it is. Closest I can get is playing the songs on guitar. Finding a singer like Liz could help?
Closest I can get is to try to sing along.. I can harmonise well enough for it to be therapeutic, but not for an audience. I hope you find someone.
I had basically the same reaction...but in 2016.
capgage1 wtf is bowl of bum gumpy
Believe it or not, it seems to be "all the wrong glory" in the lines "Singing of a famous street
I want to love, I've all the wrong glory". I just looked up the lyrics, I guess this is right? The rest of them seem right. Searched for "heaven or las vegas lyrics" and it came right up without having to go to any other page. Other pages are the same though.
+capgage1: How about The Sundays?
Liz’s eyes and voice- I just never stop being floored.
Actually i hope Heaven is like this.
Listened to this album non stop for years. So beautiful.
She's got such a beautiful voice her voice is beyond me resignates in your head
Ah, the memories this song brings. I can only understand a few sentences, but it adds to the charm of the song. The Cocteau Twins are awesome!
This song reaches this itch in my soul.
god that voice... and those eyes. record label knew they scored big with this band
I’m completely transfixed by this song; by its dreaminess and by its artistic production.
Ever since I discovered this song a month ago I've listened to it 10 times a day.
Oh I could express how much I love this band
2:01 "Maybe then you will swear
This is hardly personal
I suspect I'm singing to a tune
And still find that beats singing to your soon"
A Melodic Genius.
My God, this is beautiful.
thank God i was raised by this magnificent band, it's everlasting
Everlasting and beautiful ...I love Cocteau Twins
Voice of an angel for sure.
The prettiest goddamned song ever.
If someone asks "which Cocteau Twins song should I listen to?" ...
I love her voice and the music is so dreamy. I remember them from jr. high and high school back in the 80's. Now my 14 yr. old daughter is listening to them 40 years later. The Cocteau Twins have transcended time.
And I just discovered them in 2024, nice find!
This entire album takes me back to the 90s. My first husband and I (he died in 07) would dance and make love to this CD. Every song is perfection and in its entirety this album is a masterpiece. Unlike humans, this never gets old.
Many blessings to all ❤
I understand completely......
😭
Bitter-sweet memories…
The ambient effects of this (their most prominent tune) will be reflected in future songs dedicated to Heaven, not their earthly city of sand that slips into the sea...eventually The definition of Power Dream Pop.
Happy 32nd anniversary to the album 🌟
Song's wild, you can actually hear the words when you read the lyrics while listening to it.
I'll be listening to Elizabeth Fraser's ethereal voice when I'm 85 and in the retirement home.
How can someone so beautiful and with such a voice seem so uncomfortable in her skin? I guess she doesn't know she's an angel.
Childhood trauma?
Her "significant other" had a drug and alcohol problem.. maybe she did too?! 🤔
She’s Scottish,, we are all fucked here🤣😜
what an incredible sound
I discovered her and this song today’s rainy morning in poland, heard this in radio and i am pretty much to say its really magic
Beautiful music. Mike Oldfield, Cocteau Twins and The Sundays are my fav *Progressive / Shoegaze* bands.
пожалуй, одна из лучших песен того времени
I imagine when I die, this is the voice guiding me into eternity
