Great comparison. For ages I was determined to get a Z6 II or Z7 II, but then I randomly found an amazing deal on an A7 R3 and went for that instead. What I found is that many of the things that were putting me off from a Sony full frame really didn't turn out to be a big deal for me:
1. Lack of touchscreen/bad menus. Once you've set the camera up how you like it, you very rarely need to use the menus. The Sony is so customizable, I can control everything with just a single rear dial and the customisable buttons.
2. Handling. I hated it in the shop, but after using the camera properly for a day or so, I find it completely fine. Amazing how quick your hands can adapt
3. EVF/screen quality. The EVF is great, absolutely love it. The screen could be brighter, but I almost always use the EVF anyway. I would say, having a fully rotatable screen would be handy for shots from more extreme angles
I think the Nikon would have frustrated me with its lack of customisable buttons, which I didn't realise before watching your videos!

The a7iii is honestly my perfect camera, but I wish canon would make something comparable at a similar price so I can stay within their ecosystem. The eos R almost did it for me, but the slow burst rate and lack of uncropped 4k and slow-mo are deal breakers for me. Excellent video as always!
Thank you! I am also thinking about getting into Canon RF system, but even the EOS R6 has some big issues such as no aperture priority for video. AF is also not on Sony level.
There is definitely a gap in canons lineup that is hopefully addressed by the RPii or similar.

Thanks for the comparison. I am a A7C owner and I am very much enjoying shooting with it. At 11:11 you said that the new menu system is available for the A7iii but I think you meant the A7siii. For a moment I was happy and thought the new menu system is coming to older Sony cameras.

It is crazy how competitive the a7iii is in 2021, if they lowered the price to around 1399$ it could be an excellent alternative to the z5, z6 and rp
Yes, it is still one of the best selling cameras at 1699, so Sony doesn't really have any reason to decrease the price.
@@TheHybridShooter I think They Could’ve done it if they hadn’t released the a7c, but if the a7iii is 400$ less than a7c, it really renders the a7c obsolete for many people except travel photographers/videographers, a7iii’ s AF is still excellent

Thank you for putting to bed the a7iii green/cold shift color tones argument. I totally followed that thought process based on forums and i/ii users. So glad to see the a7iii producing noticably nicer colors than it's predecessors. This was my biggest jumping point on the Sony. I will no longer be pursuing the Z6ii and am starting the hunt for an a7iii!

I like how you mention the color differences between the original Nikon z6 and the 6ii. I’ll have to look at that .
I noticed the 6ii has a preferable color tone to the Nikons 7. The 7 being colder while the 6ii , as shown here, has a lean towards magenta shades colors which looked nice ok the flower . Also the sky in one of the photos was nicer ok the Nikon whole the Sony was a flatter blue .
Have you tried the different versions of the Sony iii? I wonder what the color differences are for them .

I think photoshop also can double megapixel count? I haven’t tried this myself but I did see someone compare the Nikon 6ii vs 7 and it seemed to work nice while also preserving the color palette of the 6ii.
Iv seen people try to match colors on a Sony iii and Iv and it doesn’t work.
At the end of the day the difference in the sensor can’t be changed . So for me I’m trying to choose camera based off of preferred built in color more then anything, though I do want something that is good in darker scenarios .
I have the canon m50 , when I bought it it was the best choice financially and with decent options but I might upgrade

One thing to note, is that all AF-S lenses from the Nikon F-mount family are compatible with the Z series, you just need the FTZ adapter. That means there are around 240 lenses (from Nikon and third party) which will work with the Z series cameras.
For someone moving from a Nikon full frame SLR (like me) that's a big bonus!
You're welcome! That is true, but IMO that is a short-term solution. Mirorless uses would be missing out a lot if they would use adapted DLSR lenses most of the time.
So my D500 / D810 lenses could fit on the Z6II body (for video) ?
@@AZTEC_ARTS2023if they are F-mount lenses that worked on your D500 or D810, they should be fully functional on the Z series ... but you will need the FTZ adapter to make it happen. Nikon should have a lens compatibility chart on their website related to this, so you could also check that to be sure...

@@brucegarethgeorge The ability of the Z6ii to output 12 bit raw should actually be ignored due to the terrible implementation of line skipping and huge loss of detail when shooting RAW. Considering that it is a 2020 release, 10-bit recording should have been internal.

I like both cameras but I’d probably still get the Sony because of the autofocus and lenses. I switched from Nikon to Sony because the Z lenses cost too expensive and there are no third party alternatives yet.

@@wildlifeecology I don’t think that adapted lenses are a way forward in 2021. Mirrorless designs are optically better and more compact. Besides that, Sony can do the same with MC-11 and EF lenses.
@@TheHybridShooter the autofocus of the nikon dslr lenses with ftz adapter on z series is better though with better compatibility IMO when compared to MC-11 adapter + adapted glass on sony ... But I will prefer compact mirrorless glass for mirrorless body... and when it comes to focus accuracy Sony is still better with the more the 2 years old tech a7iii
Good video as always, this is a question more than a comment, I currently use Fujifilm (X-T4) and have no intention of switching, but I am considering the Sony A7-III as a second system for many reasons (i.e., focusing and battery life), but I don’t want to buy it now and find out that next month Sony comes out with an A7-IV, can you tell if based on Sony’s history that is likely to happen in the near future? I personally feel a A7iv is ready, but Sony is waiting for the right time to release it - probably after canon release their new batch of entry FF bodies. Currently the a7iii is still very competitive

It is amazing how the a7III has held its pricing used. I just got one. I want the Z5 used at some point. Not sure I want a Z6. Not sure the sensor is that big of a difference on my day to day.

Really enjoyed this video - thank you. I've had Nikon SLR/DSLRs for years but didn't enjoy the A6 when I tried it. So I bought X-T3 which is great and complements my X100f 'pocket' camera, but I miss full-frame. Can't 100% explain why. I was thinking Z6ii would solve the problem - sell everything else, keep Nikon glass. But... Z6ii cost is higher, lenses cost more and seem to be heavier, and there's a good pre-owned market for A7iii. I'd appreciate your thoughts, if you have a moment....
(i) sell Nikon DSLR + lenses, Sell Fuji + 2 lenses
(ii) adopt A7iii plus the 2-3 lenses I use most often

I am somewhat in your boat. I have D750 and I want to get mirrorless and I am debating in my head if I should just get Canon or Sony right now, but I have some Nikon lenses and price is important to me, so in my case adapting F lenses is the best decision. Been thinking about getting Z6 II, but I've been pushing the brakes, because I want vertically rotatable screen and the Z6 II lacks it, also 120 hz EVF, so I am just waiting for Nikon to make something better like Z6 III or Z8 and that they have good autofocus, as I like my Nikon, also enjoy trying new stuff, but changing brands is not cheap.

On the 6ii you can accept changes via ok on the display and not have to press every time the ok button. Just for info 😉
I'm aware of that, but you still have to confirm the setting, so it doesn't really make a difference.
@@TheHybridShooter you can exit the I menue by touching i back on the display and entered the i menue over display = no button needed to change settings....you can also change all framed settings like apertures or shutter speed or iso via display, so changes are silent without clicking wheels. 😉 But you no it already.

No, that is not the case, as you can see at 10:26 in this video. I want to be able to change the frame rate to 50p by doing what I have done there. As you can see it went back to 25p.
i have nikon d5300 and want to change to FF. Can't choose z6 ii or a7iii. I have 50mm 1.8G from nikon and i love it. But i don't know if it would be great too with adapter ftz. So 1.Buy z6ii and keep 50mm 1.8g with adapter ftz or maybe just buy a7iii and buy sigma 50mm 1.4? What you think?

All in All, the Sony still has an advantage in quite low priced Objectives WITH Autofocus and by beginning of 2023 it is traded far cheaper than the Z2. Nikons Price for the 24-105 f/4 is what destroyed it when I compared both, as I wanted that optics. Including current Sony Cashbacks, it was 2099 for an A7III/SEL24-105 f4.0 OSS bundle for me, compared to 2799 for the Nikon.
While I would have loved the Nikons better Display and Viewfinder; The price difference AND the far superior Autofocus of the Sony made the decision for me.
Not seeing my pic properly on the display might be disappointing; But fucking up the picture because the Nikon focuses the dogs ears instead of face, or focusing slightly off during sport photos... Wasn't worth it for me.
With my full Objectives wishlist, the Sony goes about 1000 bucks cheaper. Not counting a 400mm; Which is 900 Bucks for Sony (Sigma) and 3000 (!) for the Nikon. Meh.
Sure, i could use the Nikons larger Bayonet for Adapters... But that would make the Autofocus even worse.
For Studio fotography, I would have chosen the Nikon. For Party, Sports, Wildlife and so on... The Sony still is the better choice in my opinion.

I'm actually using a Nikon Z6II and I'm a bit burned with Nikon, I shoot mostly wildlife and the AF speed is too low in most of the cases, also the Eye AF fails a lot (I mean, it's great showing you the eye detection but when shoot the foto the focus point moves and the face goes out of focus), also i feel limited by the lens selection for amateur users... For that i'm thinking of selling all my Nikon gear (which is not a lot) and go for a used A7III, with Sony 200-600mm and one 50mm f1.8 and 28mm f2... Do you think I'm going to notice AF speed for wildlife between Z6II and A7III? I'm not considering nowadays the A7IV because the costs of changing systems and buying new lenses is too much but... starting with A7III and in the future selling it and buying the A7IV maybe it's the right option for me

Thank you! I would probably wait until you can get the A7 IV. Getting A7 III as an in-between step doesn't make much sense to me. The AF might be a bit better than on Z6 II, but I don't think that it is worth it for that AF. The A7 III is a bit older platform, still capable, but wildlife AF is a difficult task, so you will notice much bigger difference with A7 IV which has fantastic eye detection capabilities.
@@TheHybridShooter thanks for your answer, getting the A7III is only for introducing myself in the Sony ecosystem with something "cheaper" because I have to buy the new Sony lenses (200-600 for exemple) and start selling Nikon gear, so maybe buy and use the Sony A7III for a year or so and in the future move to a A7IV, I use only single point AF or dinamic for wildlife and I thought that with the A7III I will have more AF speed in that modes, so... Do you think the af speed I would win will be something minor?
It probably won't be huge difference if you only use 1-point.

Glad I found your vídeos, love the comparisons! One question if you allow me but it has nothing to do with the comparison. You mention the color difference in between the two cameras. I have the Sony a7iii but I love the colours and contrast of the the Nikon so in a way I regret buying the sony because I shoot manly portraits and I really struggle with the colours. Do you know anyway that I can make my sony colours look like nikon colours? Any preset that I can apply to my raws (even if it is paid) to make them look better or even any camera settings that can change the (for me) terrible colours of sony? Thank you so much in advance and thank you for you wonderful vídeos!
As you can see in the video, Nikon basically changed their colors on Z6 II to match the A7 III, so you don't really have to do anything. Maybe just raise the saturation a tiny bit and move the WB slider a bit too the colder side.

It you see a big difference between Z6 II and A7 III, there is probably something wrong with one of them. Nikon seems to prefer Sony colors as well, since they form inaccurate Z6 I colors to Sony-style colors on Z6 II.

Starred video using Z6 with both Z lenses and FTP legacy lenses (the later better for focus pulling with a RHINO Arc II) but I found the ProRes RAW difficult to process as Apple FCPX never provided a profile for Nikon… so I used Sony CIN but rarely came out with consistent results under - slight - changes under controlled indoor LED lighting…
Then came Covid and had to put but all aside.
Now I am trying to get back into IT (indoor shooting theatre under controlled lighting and I’m trying decide to 1.) get a 2nd Z6 2.) get the upgraded Z6ii or get a Sony 7iii (and a couple of Sony Lenses) and shooting on my Ninja V do I still have the latitude to post fix exposure and color grading…

Honestly, I'm thinking about buying a Sony camera for video with one lens, but then again I'm a Nikon user and Nikon will probably come out with sick updates to current cameras, as well as now rumored Z6III and Z8.
The only valid reason I'd get Sony is AF, but Nikon isn't far behind either.

Could we get more details… what specifically is “far behind” if it’s only AF - honestly - most of the shooting I do is studio with a RHINO slider where I need to pull focus and the only - reliable - way is to use MANUAL lenses and let the RHINO focus… the mirrorless do not provide accurate focusing based on distance.
Love the simple design of the Sony camera body. I 'd choose the Sony just for that alone :)
Simple but cheap and outdated back display and build quality is below Nikon.
Nikon lenses are double the cost in compare with third party lenses for sony which is a huge advantage for sony users

Hi! Love your reviews, what do you recommend between m6ii and z50? I am trying to build a travel kit under 1500$, m6ii has better resolution and AF,nikon has a built in evf. I can get an extra prime with the z50 which could be somewhat useful for low light? What do you recommend?

Yes, definitely.
When your budget is 1500, you then just get one lens for your A6400 when you pick the Tamron. So that makes no sense to me ... but it's your decision and it depends on what you photograph ;)
I would pick the X-S10 or the Z50.
Z50 + 16-50 + 50-250 + the new prime that is released at the end of june. Very lightweight package for ~ 1300. Then a spare battery and tripod and backpack and fine.
X-S10 is a little bit better but try it in a store before you buy, I personally don't like it although I owned a X-H1.
You could get the X-S10 with 3 XC lenses for 1600 or so.
You can get cheap 16-50 and telephoto lens in other systems as well, so I would still avoid Z50 at the moment.

Before I purchased the A7iii I tested the Z6 gen 1 in 2019 and it was an nice camera. It offered 10 bit externally and the Sony did not. I wasn't a big deal for me. I also felt the Z6 had better build quality. The main reason I passed on the Z6 were the lack of lenses. I refused to invest in a main system based on promises of upcoming glass. I understand it was a new system but for me the lack of a 24-70 f/2.8 at the time killed it for me. Fast forward to today and they have a great 24-70 f/2.8 but Sony E mount has two 24-70mm and one 28-75mm. If I were buying today I would still take my current A7iii/Sigma 24-70mm setup over the Z6ii/Nikkor 24-70mm considering the $1300 saving.
I agree, 3rd party lenses are a huge advantage of Sony E-mount.
"Lenses" this is one of the most important reason why i choose sony over Nikon. If i ever dont like the lens, i sell them and buy something thats more compatible for best results. And the best part is they are more affordable.
And of course you have many many more lenses for the Sony :-)
Except if you have the Nikon FTZ adapter and then you have access to many more...

@@cj7073 Nope. They discountinued a few crop sensor lenses but continue to make full frame lenses. But there is plenty of second hand lenses to buy too. Nikon has hundreds of lenses to choose from both Z and F mounts for their Z series cameras.

4K crop on Z5 is an instant deal-breaker for me, so I won't be reviewing that one.

Hmmm forgot to mention that with Nikon's Z mount adapter one can use multiple DSLR lenses as well.
If I don't say something it doesn't mean that I forgot... you can use adapted lenses on Sony as well, there is no reason to mention it specifically for Nikon.

seems in A7III images are exaggerated while Nikon has real colors, also in higher ISOs sony photos have more noise. its all about your taste which one to get but overall I like real natural tones of Nikon. sony photos looks like retouched a little and makes the photos more beautiful.
Thank you! As you can see in the video, the colors are basically identical and so is the ISO performance, since both cameras use the same sensor. That is a good thing for Nikon, because Z6 colors were terribly inaccurate. Z6 II is much close to A7 III which is still one of the most color accurate cameras on the market.

That won't work, N-Log is very different profile. Nikon's RAW is heavily line skipped with terrible loss of detail, so I wouldn't even bother with RAW video on Nikon.

That is a bit complicated, S5 is better for advanced filmmakers, Z6 II is probably better for all-round use due to better AF and IBIS.

Small correction on Nikon's touch interface. You don't need to confirm settings with the OK button. Just either tab twice or hold down longer. Nikon's touch menu can be operated without any any button usage
If you use the touch screen, you have to tap OK. If you use dials, you don't, which makes it even more confusing. Nikon's main menu is unfortunately not optimized for touch input, so that is not very useful.

No, that just throws me out of the menu and the setting remains unchanged, you can see that in the video. I learned that the hard way after accidentally shooting JPEG only for half a day.
@@TheHybridShooter I works on my Z6II, just tried it. The only menu were this doesn’t work is the one for shooting modes. Needs to be operated by dials.

You can see that I have tapped on 2160p 50p, but it goes back to 2160p 25p because I didn't hit OK.
About the battery life of the z6ii, I shot 1032 images over the course of 4 hours with a single charge and still have 3 bars left.
What is more, I did regularly review the images with the display.
Was your display always on that you only could squeeze out 420 images with a single charge?
As I have said, that is CIPA rating which tests all cameras the same way. You can probably learn about their battery testing on their website. As, I have also said, you can get much more than that in the real world use. I got well over 2000 shots on single charge with A7 III multiple times.
Considering the sensor is the same, Sony is literally one firmware update away from having 4k60 on the A7iii, they only don't either because their processor isn't good enough (which I doubt, considering the much better downsampled footage on 4K) or they just don't want and are reserving that to A7IV, which is a shame but well...
A7 III is 2018 camera. Having fully downsampled 4K even at 24p was a huge achievement back then, so we really can’t blame them for not including 4K 60p which would be cropped anyway.

Partially. They Went with 33 MP sensor instead, which made no-crop 4K 60p impossible... At least there is that extra stills resolution as a compensation.

Good review, but I don’t agree about limited lens choice with Nikon. With the FTZ adapter you have access to literally hundreds of amazing lenses. This alone is probably the biggest asset of the Nikon yet you didn’t even mention this.
I don’t think that adapted lenses are a way forward in 2021. Mirrorless designs are optically better and more compact. Truly amazing lenses are mostly for mirrorless systems. Adapted lenses are only an advantage for Nikon users, who are probably not deciding between A7 III and Z6 II, so I see no reason to mention it in this video. Besides that, Sony can do the same with MC-11 and EF lenses.

One note on the Nikon Z system is the future lens selection might outperform the E mount given its much larger diameter. It has been mentioned that it could except and medium format sensor. Another advantage is the prospect of more f .95 glass that could have autofocus.
Thank you! No, mount size makes no difference in the reality. Take a look at Sony FE 20mm F1.8 G or 14-24mm GM. That proved to be just a myth spread out by the competition.

if Sony upgrades a few things in the next iteration of the A7III, they should put Nikon out of business. They now have the power of a broad product line, system level support, lens availability etc. They can ratchet the price up and down at will to gain market share given their strong base. If physical ergonomics are not important, and a person takes the time to learn the Sony menu system, then Nikon makes no sense at all. I personally like the feel and handling of the Nikon. The way the camera actually operates in my hands feels more natural to me. I am sensitive to EVF resolution. However, if autofocus is important, or lens selection, then Sony is the only game in town. For some reason I like the A7S3. I don't care about megapixel count. The A7S3 is probably Sony's best overall package right now. Thanks and stay safe!!
Always my pleasure! As I have explained, even if ergonomics are a priority, Sony is definitely an option, especially gen 4 bodies.
We will see what will happen after the A7 IV release, although it probably won't be a pleasant experience for Nikon. They will have to put together A7 IV competitor very quickly, if they want to stay relevant.
The a7iii has shutter issues where it'll fail prematurely with usually no warning, and cost over $500 to fix/replace
Mechanical shutter is always the most sensitive part of any camera... you just hear about it more with A7 III, because it sells more than all other cameras in the category combined.
I'm sure it has a lot to do with what someone is used to but I don't like the way the Sony feels in my hands. Useful comparison.

@@TheHybridShooter Not sure I can explain either, could be the shape and texture of the grip. Likely just a personal thing. Over the last 10 plus years I've shot mostly with just 2 brands, Nikon and Lumix. But I don't have the same issue if I pick up a Canon.
I actually like Sony the most out of all those brands due to they compact size and "nimbleness", so I don't know why is that either.

Both cameras are good mot the Z mount is the future whilst the E mount is now.

The fact that the difference isn't visible actually makes Sony's engineering impressive. E-mount size "issues" proved to be just a myth spread out by the competition.
Compare the size and weight and image quality of 24 70 2.8 lens in different mounts. Nikon is the best in image quality, size and weight. Canon and Sony lenses often have a lot of focus breathing..Nikon and Lumix lenses have no or least amount of breathing.
No, it actually isn't. The comparison of Nikon Z 24-70mm F2.8 S and Sigma 24-70mm F2.8 DG DN will be available next week. Sigma actually shows even less focus breathing.
E mount sigma 35mm f1.4 does not have a USB c port. L mount version has USB c.
What does that have to do with this? E-mount version doesn't need UBS-C because Sony allows 3rd party manufactures to updated lenses through the camera. That is an advantage of E-mount version.
