I bought the z6 and the a7III and used them both for a whole year of weddings. I ended up keeping the z6 and selling the a7III. When comparing the a7III to the z6 firmware 3 the AF is near identical. The Nikon is far ahead in grip, build, weather sealing, EVF, IBIS, raw video, 10 bit external, touch screen, menus, and colors sooc. The only two areas the Sony is better is in battery life which is close to double, and the ability to power the camera while running via USB. The z6 is by far the most underrated camera, at the current $1799 price and firmware 3.0 it is amazing. Still bummed about the single card slot.

I have a very similar story to yours, as a wedding/portraiture photographer/videographer I was debating between with Sony and Canon. I bought a Sony a7ii went it was first release as a backup camera to my 5dmarkiv, and it was alright camera but the colors and AF was just plain awful, but after the release of the a7iii and a7riii I ultimately ditched Canon to fully commit to Sony. Yes, the colors are not the best, but the battery life, dual SD card slots, and the AF was more than enough to switch :)

Michael Davleris, yes you are so right about the importance of an accurate EVF. I actually bought a Sony A9 and returned it because the EVF and the implementation of the EVF was really bad. Over sharpened and Sony didn’t use the full res of the EVF oled. My friend have a EOS R and I compared the EVF to my Nikon Z6. In my eyes there is a huge difference in both accuracy to the real world like colours, details, amount of light etc in favour to the Z6. And I noticed in the EOS R when you moved your eye a bit in the viewfinder there was quite noticeable amount of distortion.

    • @rzero21

@SwitchRich because they already have covered the most common zoom lens ranges. They have a 12-24/4, 16-35 both 2.8 and 4, 24-70 both 2.8 and 4, 24-240, 28-75, 24-105/4, 70-200 both 2.8 and f4, 100-400 and 200-600 and most users already own the zoom lenses they need, especially if they bought the 24-105/4 deal kit. That's why the best sellers in BHphoto from Sony are primes and macro followed by the 200-600mm.
But then you see that overall best sellers for all mirrorless brands are the Sigma 24-70/2.8 for Sony E, the Tamron 70-180/2.8 for Sony E, and then a bunch of primes followed by the Sigma 12-24/2.8 for Sony E.

anu l Have you used a Z6? All mirrorless produce banding to diff degrees, especially in electronic shutter. I pull up shadows aggressively. Never faced a problem. So the banding is in very rare cases which can be easily avoided. But Zombie skin colour can’t be avoided and you can edit skin ONLY TO SOME EXTENT or else it loses its organic feel. So no, Sony’s behind in skin tones.

Well during a photoshoot with 2 young dancers, knowing that the Sony A7iii would have a much easier time tracking the things they did than my Nikon D750, I took it with me despite only having an 85mm 1.8 lens for it. You forgot a very important feature on the Sony which is the second memory card, a BIG reason why I was pushed from Nikon toward Sony, I would be a Z6 owner and with Nikon if not for this feature. Another big Sony advantage which was talked about is the third party lenses. You can built today a totally professional lens line up for a wedding pro with only Sigma or Tamron lenses which cost HALF of OEM lenses, thats something you cant say with either Nikon or Canon. No doubt Canon lenses are great but you pay so much for basically same performance which Sigma and Tamron offer for Sony. I assume in time you will be able to get these third party lenses with Canon and Nikon but when ? Last thing they didnt touch was Z6 IBIS which is better then Sony's and the lack of IBIS on the Canon. Overall I agree the Sony is still best but all 3 cameras starting to show their age and all deserve to be retired and replaced.

This is know and well documented and does, as a result, improve dynamic range results, which are really close to the rest of the pack, in a way that many would say any difference is minimal (DPReview agrees in their latest article on which the vid is based upon).
DPReview however have not updated their studio scene test and their test shots do not reflect that.

By all means test Canon for a tricky high dynamic range situation landscape portrait and criticize it for not being up to par in reality no one should be shooting that image without a proper graduated filter. And the image quality these days is most depended on the quality of lenses rather than minor differences in sensor performance. If you are specialized enough to need that extra capabilities of the sensor you probably aren't watching this video to decide which camera to buy.

As a Pentax shooter for many years, I had Sony camera with contrast detect and was shooting hand-held sharp photos from the cars window, while driving it , but my Pentax with phase detect struggled even during landscape photos on the tripod on the bright day and was very unprecise, so I think both types can get developed over the years. For macro contrast focus is more precise too, so I use live view in my Pentax cameras with more success 😉

I think the review is nice but I disagree with the ranking system your ranking system is based on what you like and how you want to shoot. It’s not the camera it’s how the person sets up that camera to take beautiful images and video.

Absolutely! Especially when it comes to RF glass. Sony can’t touch it. But it’s true that Sony has so many third party lenses made for it, although Canon and Nikon are THAT far behind there

I agree with most, but if you look at comparisons, you will find that. The Sonys also have banding sometimes. Within two years i have not had a single Situation where banding came up and even simulations of a situation where it should come up were ultimately unsuccessful. It is a non-issue that after more than two years, has apparently not ruined anyone's shots so far. I don't get why it is still brought up.

Yes there are more lenses available for E mount but why is every Sony shooter using Tamron and Sigma? Because Sony optics suck. Sony’s going to suffer more with that small mount very soon.

With the best image quality, low light performance and lens selection, the A7iii is the overall winner. The other things don’t matter as much.

Have to agree - major downside of Sony though it its limiting mount. This will certainly play a part in the future when Canon and Nikon will certainly take advantage of Sony's mistake. I am hopeful that Canon can produce a sensor better than Sony's and that Nikon beats them both ;-)

I bought the A7III only for the Zeiss 35mm.
In Sony and Nikon systems, no small lenses. What a shame.
