Variances. Management and minimizing it is a consistent discussion with clients both in the development of the project as well as its execution.
Initial budgets are just targets with baseline assumptions to product and sequencing/schedule. As the project is refined, budget discussions should focus on the variances from baseline. VE is the process pulling the project back closer to the baseline.
For some perspective projects, it’s good exercise to do an initial schedule along with an initial estimate. Viewed together it can reveal holes in one or the other. Sometimes both.
    Best to you

I'm going through this right now. Going from high six figures to over 1.2mil, all because of final finish selections and details.

Thank you for this. I am right now trying to get my client to understand the value of the integrated design process and how bringing everyone together helps to control the budget and helps stop the draftsman for drawing huge rooms because he doesn't have to think at that point as everything will just fit. It sucks when you are having to crush your customer's dreams due to drafting huge project with budgets that arent aligned.

When working with subs new and old, how do you communicate your standards? And how do you have this conversation without sounding like you are trying to tell them how to do their job?

How do you compete with other shops when you do not do your own finishing? We were never able to make it because we had to sub out finishing so we got out of the cabinet business and stuck to building.
