A little about me and this channel:
My name is James Aubrey IV and I just recently graduated college from Iowa State University. After college I decided to take a leap of faith. So I moved to San Diego California to pursue my passion for videography/ UA-cam. Overall I'm a pretty chill person, outside of UA-cam I like to longboard, dance, play video games, lift weights and hangout with my friends. I know that success on UA-cam won't happen overnight but I'm willing to stay patient and put in the work to try to prefect my craft daily. This UA-cam channel will be centered around my life after college. You will be able to see all of the ups and downs on my journey to success. So if you like the content make sure you subscribe so you can be apart of the Rome Life Family. (Let's build our own personal Rome's together.)
What is the Rome Life ? And What does it mean to be apart of it?
Rome Life is something I started during my Sophomore year of high school (one of the worst times in my life) it started off as me documenting my journey to recovery from my shoulder surgery but eventually it turned into a platform that I could use to encourage myself as well as others to chase our dreams.
Rome Life isn't just a saying it's a way of life and for the people who want to be apart of it have to realize that. Rome wasn't built in a day it took a lot of handwork time and most importantly patience. So you can't expect your dreams to be any different
This is a reaction video used to educated and give my feedback on the song and artist

I recall the Beasties being appreciated from the start. I think that in the beginning they were seen as really silly and fun. However, they broke on the scene making a stir from the start because the sound definitely was new and different. They became more respected as artists and innovaters with every release. Please check out their live performance of Brass Monkey at Madison square garden. That is a 20k seat venue. They were the shit in NY at that time.

Not sure if anyone has presented a group that didn't really get noticed until the late 80's called Full Force. They produced other pioneers of hip hop named UTFO (deserving of their own listening session)which spun off arguably the original battle rap response from Roxanne Shante(another complete story)known as Roxanne Roxanne.
Full Force went on to do their own style of hip hop that fused hard drum kicks, harmony's, funk styled delivered by dudes who looked like they worked out at Rikers Island but raised Princes closet.
They produced and wrote for such notables as Stacy Fox and the Backstreet Boys (All I Have To Give)
Enough ofthe cheat sheet, start with Alice, I Want You Just For Me.

Listened to the Beastie Boys in my young years THEE 80s. They are kinda like the BEATLES - the next few albums were better than ever. I particularly like the fact they actually PLAYED instruments. On every album. The first B Boy Album was awesome - But the next few were the bomb. Yup.

Beasties were public enemy number one for a little while. They were too raunchy and crazy. The first two releases from this album were Fight for Your Right To Party and No Sleep til Brooklyn. Both pretty rock inspired and goofy. It got their foot in the door and moved rap into the suburbs and rural America (white areas). Their very first song that got any air time was Cookie Puss and it was everywhere in NYC clubs and such. They were in it all from before Def Jam was even a real company. They worked directly with Run DMC and Rick Rubin. They brought LL Cool J’s tape to Rick Rubin and helped him get recognition sooner. They were one of the first hip hop artists to start their own label. They were dismissed in some communities at first for being goofy and white. They stayed goofy and white, but their music was quickly beyond what some folks could grasp (Paul’s Boutique) and that album kinda flopped initially. Their third album brought them back into the limelight for good. Then Paul’s Boutique started getting recognized for what it is and they grew more. Then came Ill Communication and Sabotage and they were deified. They never lost their respect of the culture, never stopped trying to innovate, and never lost their sense of humor. They became global activists. They would never have fallen for 20 years of trap beats and 10 years of auto tune.

Their first year and tour, the National press hated them. They were trashing hotels, sleeping with young girls, and throwing beers from the stage into the crowd. They also were unpredictable with their language on television, so their record company was frustrated as well. Their second album released by themselves, after being stiffed by Defjam, did not sell much pass true fans. Their reputation increased with Check your head immensely, and by Ill communication with Sabotage and intergallactic, they were a staple of MTV. Today, all of raps grandfathers will tell you that these guys were there in the beginning. LL, Chuck D, the Roots they will all insist that Beasties are rap through and through.

The guy doing the guitar solo is Kerry King from Slayer. They were both on the same record Label at the time and Rick Rubin produced both of their albums that year. Check out South of Heaven for a sample of Slayer. As for Beastie Boys, they didn't take themselves seriously so some people thought they were a joke at first. But in general, rap fans liked them. Metal fans liked them. Mainstream media and parents hated them lol. Check out Rhymin & Stealin off the same album.

Beastie boys were all ways accepted in Hip Hop. They started touring with Whodini,LL cool J and Run DMC before their record even hit stores. as a matter of fact Ad Rock pretty much found LL cool J. No comparison to Vanilla Ice. Beastie Boys Are many levels higher. About rap and rock. Rap started with rapping of over rock beats. There was not many hip hop beats in the 70's lol so guys would use rock songs and rap over them.

They crossed all genres, it was an easy entry into rap for us white suburban kids, when I was 14, they came out rapping about partying, Fight for Your Right to Party, Brass Monkey etc. and then a few years later when we are Gradating high school we hear Paul's Boutique Shake your Rump etc. and we see what the rap genre really has to offer, then a few years later we are in college smokin weed takin mushrooms etc. and they hit us with Check your Head and Ill Communication, then after the mid 90's and rap explosion and GFunk take over, they come back with old school again 3 MC's and 1 DJ, they were always relevant during the 25 year run, and they hit all styles, they played their own instruments when they wanted, they made the sickest beats with the best producers when they wanted, always original and fun.

When it went #1, that was the second time that it was released. The first release was on the album Hooked on Ichiban Records in 1989 and it went nowhere. The second release on the To the Extreme album on the SBK label in August (as the B-side of the Play that Funky Music single) or September(the album) of 1990 is the version that you’re thinking of. That is why they say it wasn’t popular when it originally came out.

Run DMC was the first to combine the genre. Rick Rubin was The Beastie Boys DJ. Then when Rick started Def Jam, he signed Run DMC, the Beastie Boys. So Run DMC was the starting point of rock/rap. The Beastie Boys were an unexpectedly huge success. Their first album, LICENSE TO ILL, was no 1 for seven consecutive weeks. The Beastie Boys got LL COOL J's rap career started. He was part of DEF JAM too.

Right before the first Beastie Boys album dropped, Run-DMC's Raising Hell came out and it was red hot. This was right about the time that hip-hop really became accepted in the suburbs. The first Beastie Boys album was super hot. Run-DMC, Beastie Boys, and Public Enemy, in that order, were the first three rap groups that I remember having hard rock/rap songs on a consistent basis (at least two per album). You could put LL Cool J in that category to a degree too. Those four acts all cross-promoted each other from 1986 to 1988, and all were popular, especially Run-DMC and BB. (There was also a conspiracy theory/rumor that went around when I was in high school that the Beastie Boys all died in a plane crash--presumably based off the album cover). The second Beastie Boys album, Paul's Boutique, was completely different than this album, and though people liked it, many people didn't get it at the time, though it went on to become appreciated in time. The third and subsequent albums is when they became a full-on rock-rap-music hybrid and played their own instruments on almost every track instead of relying on samples for beats.

I'm a 52 year-old female, born and raised in Houston, TX. I want to Jack Yates in Houston's 3rd Ward, (the same school as George Floyd). My favorites are Michael Jackson, Prince, Janet Jackson and Teena Marie. I did like old-school rap (I grew up in the 70's and 80's, so I heard rap from the beginning of radio air play). I liked the rap that first came out, but towards the late 80's, I didn't particularly like rap. I didn't hate it, but it just wasn't my favorite. But Whodini and the Beastie Boys were FIRE for me! The Beastie Boys hit so hard and it seemed that EVERYONE were reciting their raps. I remember our band at half-time saying, "Kick it over here, baby pop, and let all the fly skimmies feel the beat, mmmmm-drop!" Those times were magical!!
I said all of that to say, no matter what you were into back that, we were ALL into the Beastie Boys. To date, their album "License to Ill" is one of my personal favorite albums, from the first song to the last, literally. These guys were fresh and fun and they had the BEST beats!

Check out the next few albums > Pauls Botique. Check your head etc. > Trust me bro. I lived in the 80s, and no, it wasnt coddled well, ie they were sorta considered as posers by the masses. 'white boys tryin to do black music'. From what I can see back in the 80s, Groups like Run DMC, BDP, Public Enemy etc > They accepted the B Boys, they saw the genius. As a bass player 20 years later > you WILL NOT GET BETTER than the next albums > Good $hit bro. PS, Vanilla Ice was cool for a sec. But naaaa, he was a one hit wonder in the end. But in 2021 I guess he has his place. sure. Anyhow, Beastie Boys made possible Kid Rock and even Eminem.

The thing i remember as a 10/11 year old listening to this in junior high is that our parents were HORRIFIED. The lyrics and themes were unmistakably overt, and teachers and church leaders were freaking out. Many listeners were adolescent/teen white kids who liked rock but either grew up in the city, in the South, or grew up poor, thus we were exposed also to Rap/early hip-hop... literally the music of the streets--the stuff people were breakdancing to on flattened cardboard with an often-hooptie-fied/duct-taped boom box blaring beside. It was music for the 'immature' and 'discontented', honestly. But it doesn't stick to a genre because they were creating the genre as they went. Like inventing a sonic gumbo.
Specifically, I remember that's when censorship starting kicking in on MTV. They'd only play certain videos after 9 pm, and there were 'American edits' to protect our precious minds and ears.
It adds a whole new level of irony to hear that "smokes dust" and "whore" are 'edited out' (censored) in this video you just watched now on UA-cam.
We make progress for a couple of decades, then we backtrack and do it again like we never learned our lesson the first time.
It makes this feel like 1985/86 all over again. I'm waiting for Tipper Gore to come out in her Thatcher-esque polyester sack-dress suit with her midwestern Christian-grandma hairdo and start another fight with Dee Snyder from Twisted Sister. (If you're interested/curious about the history/culture of music in the 80s, look up the senate hearings on censorship--the Dee Snyder testimony is classic, but Frank Zappa and some others turned up too.)
It's anachronistic that we hold on to these Victorian notions in the 21st century. But i guess it works as a throwback :P :)

Speaking only for myself, I was just out of high school, and had discovered Run/DMC via King of Rock. The metallic guitars they used in the title track drew me in. Maybe a year later I heard this record and recognized the samples from Led Zep, AC/DC and CCR, which to me, a metalhead just finding rap, meant everything. These artists - Run DMC, Beasties and LL Cool J especially, seemed to welcome me in by referencing all the same bands I grew up loving. Then the Beasties blew up, Run DMC did the joint with Aerosmith and everyone I knew was suddenly a rap fan. Luckily i had cousins who were into it in a serious way from before even Run DMC, and they kept me supplied with BDP, Eric B and Rakim, Fat Boys et all, so I was.. well, still a tourist, but at least one who knew the best places to visit.
