It looks good. I agree, there's spots you simply have no control over. I don't know that I would have use for this type of work but it is nice to know it can be done.
Thanks and yeah I’m sure there will be some that’ll disagree 😆 . As mentioned in the video there’s a more professional way to color convertible tops but I figured this is a good diy that’ll save a few bucks.
You did a really good job on that top! I'm gonna be doing the same thing to my dad's soft top Jeep. Thanks a lot for the tips and information.
Thanks I appreciate that and you for watching the video, hopefully you have a successful project
How'd the project end up?
@jayrazz8499 As far as I know no issues, this was one of our customers vehicle
Excellent. My car needs the same 👍
Thanks for watching the video and sharing your thoughts.
Good video. I'm going to try vynil die from an aerosol can . I have used it on interior parts and it looks great. I will find out if it lasts under the Australian sun.
Thanks for the compliment, my opinion the dye should hold up well
What happens when it rains? Will this still be the same color?
No worries with it fading from the sun rays or rain, the engine paint has strong longevity. As mentioned in the video there’s a more professional way to color convertible tops but I figured this is a good diy that’ll save a few bucks.
@@newtouchauto Ahhh okay got it. Thanks for your response and it turned out great. 😊
@@glamourgoddess4683 you’re welcome and thanks for watching the video.
It turns green like money
My first question is - how does it hold up? Painting on cloth, doesn't the paint crack? How does it look after 6 months and after the top as been up and down a few times?
This was one of my customers at the time but no issues were reported. They also have automotive fabric spray as well lawn furniture spray which is designed to fight off the outdoor seasons. You can find the outdoor pillow spray aerosols at Lowe’s or Home Depot, the fabric spray can be found at your local automotive stores.
@@newtouchauto Thanks for the swift reply. Ohh! I got it - thought it must have been some kind of special paint spray. I have a beige/light brown top starting to look shabby and looking for a way to make it dark brown. I think I'll go with some dye products like I found in another YT from UK.
@@my5cents4u you’re welcome and yes dye products are better as long as they’re for outdoor use as well. The thing about painting something like this top would be not adding gloss, that’s when you’ll experience cracked paint and failure.
Good job. Somewhere I missed the type of paint you used .

@@newtouchauto thanks 👍

Did a real good job at home project be a great thing to do took the scratches out nice video
Thanks I appreciate that and you watching the video. As mentioned in the video there’s a more professional way to color convertible tops but I figured this is a good diy that’ll save a few bucks.
I love it. My son just got his first car an wants to paint the vinyl top black. I want to help him make it look good. An your video was awesome. The only question I have is, has it cracked at all?
To my knowledge no but the reason I used the product in the video is because it doesn’t have a gloss coating. That way there’s nothing to worry about with cracking paint.
I just read the other peoples coments an got the answers to the questions i asked ya. Thank you so so much an i give you a 110 rating. You should do more videos bc this really helped thank you again
You’re welcome and thanks for watching the video. The brand used in this video will work but there’s a better product that you can also use. Fabric spray that can be found in your local automotive shops, here’s the link below.
Dupli-Color HVP106 Vinyl and Fabric Coating Spray Paint - Flat Black - 11 oz Aerosol Can a.co/d/4WnhglP
A very good job but can you tell me please what kind of colour spray did you used ...is it a special spray for it?or is a normal car spray colour.thank you!
In this video I used outdoor/indoor paint by Krylon. Fabric paint or staining is more ideal for the project but I pretty much wanted to show others a different option.
It looks great. Do you notice any fading from parking in the sun? I want to paint mine a new color also!

How many cans of paint did you use?
2 cans should complete the process, they also have automotive fabric spray as well lawn furniture spray which is designed to fight off the outdoor seasons. You can find the outdoor pillow spray aerosols at Lowe’s or Home Depot, the fabric spray can be found at your local automotive stores.
Good job thanks

Can a black soft top be painted tan? And if so, how well does it hold up?
Yes it can be done, you’ll need to base coat it first with grey or white. Then you can apply the tan coats. Fabric spray will be the best option or have it dyed to your preference
And was that high temp engine paint ya used i can not really see the name of the paint
Yes, the brand was Duplicolor
?it looks great BUT does mechanism stil. Work?
Thanks and yes everything works normally.
How has it been holding up ?
No issues reported from the owner, so far so good.
Way too much work and too expensive. Just get liquid shoe paint and apply it with a sponge. The vinyl will look new in 5 minutes
Thanks for sharing your thoughts, I wasn’t aware of shoe paint.
A video of it ?
I tried this method with the shoe shine liquid paint about 2years ago to try and save money and out-smart the unknown and it was a very bad decision cuz with the texas heat & sun it only took a few summer months before most of the black color on my rag top totally faded really really bad and looked greyish-white and looked alot worst than before , worst mistake ever ! Im not sure what chemicals are in liquid shoe paint but I should have know that most shoes are not made from the same materials as rag tops ! lol.. what in the world was I thinking ! lol... I'm most likely gonna try this method here in this video here since it simply makes way more sense than the stupidity I did in the past ! lol...
@@djivanevents1632 I live in Antalya 300 days desert sun. Winter horrorble rain. Had no such problem with this shoe paint. I am talking about shoe leather paint which is liquid like water, not shoe cream. I own this convertible for a year now and put only one time liquid paint on it. After a year it still looks nice. I only clean it from time to time with a microfibre cloth and multipurpose cleaner
@djivanevents1632 thanks for sharing your thoughts and experience, there’s always a better option for what we choose. They also have automotive fabric spray as well lawn furniture spray which is designed to fight off the outdoor seasons. I don’t think this will work good ,,, when paint dry gets hard so when you open and close the top paint will crack
If this was a gloss or acrylic paint finish then you’d be correct, with this satin paint finish no cracking will occur.
How did you clean the top at first?! Thank you for the vid brother. Not a lot of people go over how to mask the car off.
You’re welcome and thanks for the compliment, only the normal degreaser soap and water will do.
You didn't tell us what kind of paint
Thanks for watching the video, the information is listed in the description area.
Great video but you did not go the details of the materials
Thanks for the compliment, you can find the details listed in the description.
A d what about rain???
Great question, no worries with rain. As long as it’s dry before anything comes in contact with the surface there won’t be any issues. It’s a permanent paint finish, just an easy way for those to get done diy style.
Too much work
Thanks for watching the video.
Paint??????? Holy shit!! 😂
