  • Tom and Harrison sat down with Sven Häuser-Eisenmann, the founder and CEO of Xantus, to discuss his groundbreaking product, the Drinkcheck Wristband. Xantus is focused on improving safety by providing an easy-to-use tool that helps detect harmful substances in drinks, addressing the growing issue of drink spiking. In this interview, Sven shares the story behind Xantus, the development process of the wristband, and how it can make a difference in public safety.
In the UK, drink spiking and related assaults, including date rape, are significant concerns, particularly in social settings like nightclubs, pubs, and parties. According to a report from the National Police Chiefs’ Council (NPCC), there were over 1,300 reports of drink spiking incidents across the UK between September 2021 and January 2022 alone. The number of unreported cases is believed to be much higher, as victims often do not realise their drink has been tampered with until much later.
In terms of sexual assault linked to spiking, a 2022 YouGov survey found that 11% of women and 6% of men in the UK reported having their drinks spiked at least once. Additionally, figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) show that there were more than 61,000 reported cases of rape in the UK in 2022, with many incidents believed to involve some form of incapacitation, including drink spiking.
These statistics highlight the pressing need for innovations like the Drinkcheck Wristband from Xantus, which aims to provide a proactive solution to this growing issue. By empowering individuals to detect harmful substances in their drinks, the wristband could play a critical role in preventing drink spiking and enhancing public safety.
