  • Tilak Devasher's talk is based on his latest book, 'The Pashtuns: A Contested History. The Pashtuns are perhaps the largest ethnic group in the world without a country of their own. They inhabit a continuous stretch of land from the Hindu Kush to the Indus, across Pakistan and Afghanistan. Pakistan used the Pashtun-dominated areas in Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) as a launching pad against the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan in the 1980s and later during the US-led War on Terror.
In the process FATA was kept in a constitutional and informational black hole. The discontent finally burst in 2018 when the extra-judicial killing of a Pashtun youth led to widespread protests.
This book by veteran analyst Tilak Devasher fulfils a gap in the geopolitical understanding of South Asia, given the US withdrawal from Afghanistan and the shifting power equations in the region.
    ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Tilak Devasher is the author of three widely acclaimed books on Pakistan: ‘Pakistan: Courting the Abyss’ (December 2016) that was termed ‘easily the best book on Pakistan’ by a noted Pakistani commentator - Khaled Ahmed; ‘Pakistan: At the Helm’ (July 2018), that a Pakistani reviewer in Dawn termed as ‘a book that any future leader of Pakistan ought to have by their bedside, simply because it is the sum of all that has gone before’; and ‘Pakistan: The Balochistan Conundrum’ (July 2019) that a Pakistani reviewer in Dawn held was ‘far better than the books written on the subject by our own academics and writers.’
Tilak retired as Special Secretary, Cabinet Secretariat Government of India in October 2014. He is currently a member of the National Security Advisory Board (NSAB) and also a Consultant with the Vivekananda International Foundation.
During his professional career Tilak served in J&K, Delhi and abroad. He specialized in security issues, especially pertaining to India’s neighbourhood. Post retirement, he has continued to take a keen interest in such issues with special focus on Pakistan.
Tilak has taken to writing after superannuation. Apart from his books, he has written articles for a host of newspapers, magazines and think tank journals. He is a regular contributor to the Indian Express, Tribune and occasionally to India Today. He also appears frequently on TV talk shows.

Babur wrote, "When he attacked the birds, he quickly gave up and came in front of me with grass in his mouth and said, 'I am your cow and forgive us, but I cut off the necks of all of them and built a tower.'

True, that was when he had attacked a single smaller sub-section of Pashtuns near modern Kohat and Bannu. In order to announce yield or accept defeat, earlier Pashtuns used to do that. After doing that, most of the times him and his people were spared. But that’s what another Pashtun would do. Babur was not a Pashtun, so he cut their heads off. This was a time when Pashtuns were at the peak of their inter-tribal animosity towards one another. They had no sense of unity. They were divided into dozens of smaller tribes. Still, within 15 years, Sher Shah, from the Sur tribe of Pashtuns, defeated Babur’s son and retook the throne. Afterwards, the Mughal retook the throne but this time their attitude towards Pashtuns was of equals and not of subjects. Still, they never subjugated the Pashtuns entirely. Waziristan and most of the tribal regions were in a constant fight against the Mughals. Eventually, Mughals had to rely on Pashtuns again when they faced the threat of Marhattas. True to their spirit of Pashtunwali, Pashtuns under the leadership of Ahmad Shah Baba went and defeated the Marhattas at Panipat and saved the Mughals, despite what had happened between them in the past. Today, hardly anyone calls themself Mughal or considers mughals a dominant power. However, Pashtuns will remain invincible till the end of days. InshaALLAH!

Afghans have only got what they have come to date, they used to loot by just raiding, but yes, afgan are much more self-respecting than punjabi convert mullahs, Punjabi mullahs have not been able to produce any hero of their own till 1000 years , they lie down in front of everyone and consider their rapists as their father.

I am just 18 minutes in this video and baffled by the tribal mindset, it's shocking how religion can make and break individuals I think our comrade of Afghanistan is a great example of how religion can turn genuine peaceful individuals to people kill someone just for there so call honor.

This Pashtun Wali Code has to be broken and destroyed.
This has NO Place in modern world .
    Don't give excuses.
All Cultures have changed . Why not they ??
They sure were changing until recently before Taliban came back to power again...
Pashtuns are No different. They are like everyone .
One only has to DESTROY all these concentric circles of loyalty of Pashtun Wali..
I am Not talking about Loyalty etc.
Its just revenge, Violence. Pasthtuns can still practice their code without breaking State laws and state laws won't allow revenge

You Hindutvas have very weird priorities. Pashtun Wali is great. It has preserved the warrior spirit of the Pashtuns. Instead of wasting your time trying to dismantle it, you need to try to bring back the warrior spirit among the Hindus, which has been lost. The Kshatriya spirit is absolutely vital for the nation.

Afghanistan has very remote areas where the State does not reach. In such areas, the people rely on Pashtunwali as they have done for thousands of years and it has protected them and supported them. How else do you think Afghan society managed to survive during the last 50 years of war and even now when the economy has collapsed, there are no jobs, international aid has been cut off almost entirely, and the country is under sanctions? By relying on the local community and being independent of the government
