Hi everyone! I have to correct one of the statements in the video: during the last guitar camp someone checked with Tommy about putting jumbo frets in his guitars, and he responded that that is not true! I don't make things up for my videos and had read that piece of information somewhere, but I feel have to correct it to make sure that no one goes ahead and pulls all the frets out of their guitar!
Actually Tim, Tommy did an interview I don't remember what one but he said he did have a guitar that he changed the frets on it. Anyways lol I don't think tommy remembers himself 😂
Apart from the beautiful story, this is advice that goes straight to what actually matters, and provides evidence for it. It should be viral among acoustic guitar players.
Tim's comments on how tommy's guitars are set up is really interesting. I played a Maton guitar that one of Tommy's opening acts had set up exactly like Tommy had his guitars set up. The action is unbelievably low, much lower than any other acoustic I've ever played. Really interesting 5 tips. Thoroughly enjoying your TE lessons. Just sent you a tip. You deserve it, Tim.
24:21 Tim, thanks for this and all your great videos! Loved your personal story about playing with Tommy! My wife and I saw Tommy in Durham North Carolina recently and we’re going to see him in Charlotte North Carolina in December. I’m 66 years old and played for five years in my late teens and early 20s. Took about 42 years off to work and raise a family but now retired and playing a couple hours every day, mostly with your and a few others guidance! Having loads of fun and I can’t wait to get into Broken Man and Clara’s Theme and Little drummer boy in a few weeks couple weeks!
Beautiful video Tim, thanks for the tips. I haven't had the opportunity to meet Tommy in person, but thanks to people like you, he feels closer. Thank you so much for your labor. Greetings from Spain.
I’m not saying I shed a tear at your story...but I shed a tear on your story. Man, Tommy really IS a living legend. Thank you for sharing your experience with us.
That was quite a story Tim! I love it and I love the tips! I've been playing most of my life and I'm now in my late 60's and having only recently started learning Travis Picking style (Tommy's fault ha ha!) I am really loving it! Wish I had started this 20 years ago!
Love the story and love the tips! Thank you! Fingerstyle guitar and playing stuff from tommy and chet has totally changed my way of enjoying the instrument - you make the love even deaper!
Loved your story on Tommy and yourself, theres something special about you Tim, great player great teacher ,your such a relaxed dude ,a lot of guitar players don,t realise, that you have to be at a certain level to play Tommy,s stuff, Chet too, I mean to play it well and on stage,Im not a teacher but a player, who just happens to play many of Tommy,s songs, Its all about regular practice, practice & more practice ,and it will come, I know, I take my hat off to you Tim wow,, on the same bill as Tommy,I think by the look on your face your dream maybe came true, you deserve it man you really do ,I can see you put the work and hours in, I met Tommy when he was unknown here in Western Australia aged in his early thirties for $10 , he said the short cuts are at the butchers shop ,not with the guitar, he was a fabulous player then, well done Tim, all that hard work paid off David.
I sometimes look up really old TE videos from when he was still playing in Australia only. He was indeed a phenomenal player already, but it really struck me how much he still managed to improve through his 40s and 50s! A lesson to us all!
I was in the audience that night. I believe I remember the introduction to one of your songs was something about the sleepless nights you had before the show
I am only 3 years into my guitar journey... but I have discovered that playing acoustic amplified and with a microphone is so completely different than playing without, that I almost always practice with full sound for weeks before any performance I have. Such a good tip. Remember the encouragement from Tommy when you are the mentor/master... and pass it on to the next generation :)
Wish I knew this sooner. Haven’t been able to play in 3 weeks because of really bad tendonitis 😭I miss it so much. When I can start again I will lower my action, probably change to 11’s, and start playing with Tommy Emmanuel technique I learned from this vid. Thanks for the tips
If that tendonitis was a result of playing the guitar then you REALLY need to lighten up your technique! Playing the guitar should never hurt (at least in terms of muscle pain). I really hope you manage to get through this!
What a marvellous story, memory’s to cherish for the rest of your life. When you mentioned the crowd out there i was getting decidedly nervous just listening to the story :)
A little late to this video but man, that story made me adore Tommy even more. Through your story, you and Tommy have inspired me even more to play, and made me realize what value music has. Great video 👍
Hoi Tim.
I did not expected such a nice story at the end, thank you, it had to be really unforgettable moment and breaking moment in your life. I envy you in a good manner of course. Wish you all the best. I follow you
Such great tips there Tim! Thank you for sharing all that and your personal story of meeting Tommy and opening for him. Loved hearing every bit of it. When you mentioned that bit about feeling Tommy's hand on your shoulder that was touching and hard not to be inspired by it.Thanks for all that you do to help us. It is so much appreciated!
Wow Tim , you are great . I love your site . I wish I had found you a long time ago . I am 78 years old and watched Tommy E. , Doyle D. , Chet A , and Travis and a lot of other fingerstyle guitar pickers about 2 years and started to learn fingerstyle. You are the first one that I really love. You talk slow and are very very good to explain the art really good. I can't believe you played for Tommy. That has to be a gift from GOD. Wow. I am going through his class right now but I like yours better. He's to fast for me. Hahaha. I'm catching on somewhat but have no one to play for or with so I do not know if I'm any good or not. Hahaha. Keep up the fantastic job of teaching us. Thank you sooooo much. Dick.
I’ve started to learn Tommy’s song since last year, been looking for ways to learn and your channel has helped me in that quest, this is the best channel to learn finger style songs in my opinion, thank you. I must say, I’ve only came across this video today in Oct 2021, but this is the best video I’ve seen on how to learn to play TE’s songs, and the story is so amazing and the way you share is so humble and genuine, so thank you for all you do.
And to me it's amazing that I can tell stories to another Aussie about TE that you haven't heard before! The channel is going to expand quickly into other artists as well, but Tommy will always be the biggest inspiration of my (acoustic) guitar playing life!
Dear Tim, thank you for sharing your knowledge. That was a fantastic story. I have seen a lot of online guitar learning material so far, but your content is really outstanding :) It is so much fun to work myself through your content. I wish you all the best, Alexander.
You are a true devotee of Tommy Emmanuel i can say..... I m really pleased to hear your story n how i wish it kept going on and on.. ... And yes of course, i wish we could see more footage of you n TE from that show..... Thnx Tim for all your hardship to make our life easy on learning Tommy's songs... 🙏🙏
Tim, I just came across your channel. What a gem for guitar players on UA-cam!! Immediately subscribed and soon will join your patreon too. Thank you and keep up the good work!
Thank you for sharing that story. I have always used a lot of force when I play, probably from busking in my early years. I am going to try to lighten up the touch, play slower, and make it easier to learn these tunes I am working on. Your tutorial on Angelina is the best one I have found. Very thorough. Thanks again, Thomas
Tim, I just discovered your channel as I searched for some info / tutorials on Tommy’s songs. Such a great story and I appreciate your style so much. I’m a older beginner guitarist and it’s so great to get inspiration from you and others like you. Great tips for a novice like me. Thanks for your channel!
Great to hear Bryan! Especially the tips on how to set up your acoustic are of major importance. I have had a lot of students in this style by now, and most of the time it turns out the guitar they are playing is just too difficult to play to have any real chance of success!
Thanks for this infos sir.. i am from Philippines but i live in Japan. i think i may never have a chance to see T.E. i have some videos playing some of my favorite T.E. songs. i think i cant play close to him because I only play by my ears. I cant read tabs and notes.. but i am happy that i can somewhat play my favorite T.E. songs. :) thanks for your tutorials too. :) keep them coming...
Your tips and subsequent story about your Tommy experience was great! I’ve been to a few of Tommy’s workshops, and he’s just as you described. He’s one of the kindest most down to earth superstars out there.
@@TimVanRoy I've started to pay attention in today's practice : ) Also to accompany that I lowered the action to ~2mm on both end yesterday and it worked a charm.
Tim, sorry I'm late to the party. This is an excellent video. I'm a UK guitar teacher in my mid-60s, and the advice you offer here is invaluable. I spend so much time in lessons just trying to get students to adopt some/all of the habits you mention - eg keeping wrists and arms continuously relaxed, using the lightest touch possible on the fretting hand, building playing speed gradually, etc. For some students I even spend the first 10 minutes of a lesson guiding them through a brief mindfulness meditation that focuses on the physical aspects of playing, and I recommend that they do it at home each time they pick up their guitars. Anyway, I'll be recommending your channel to all my students in the coming weeks, so you might pick up a few new subscibers/contributors. Please keep doing what you do, and good luck with the remainder of your music career.
Hi, that is so motivating and inspiring to hear! Thank you for taking the time to write me such an encouraging message. I'll be looking out for those UK students 😉
This is one of the best video on youtube not only about Tommy Emmanuel, but about guitar in general. The story you shared literally gave me goosebumps! Thank you for the tips and for the inspiration, I hope you the best for your career! Greetings from Italy
Working through windy and warm again with these tips and can report I feel like I'm making a lot more progress with a lot less frustration. Playing at 40bpm and taking it slow and relaxed. Thank you!
And don't hesitate to set the metronome to "double time" (aka clicking in eight notes instead of quarter notes) if it helps you to keep time better. 40 bpm is really hard to follow because it is so slow!
@@TimVanRoy that works much better than 40 BPM :) Now... if only my pinky would stop throbbing from all the embellishments on W&W in the 2nd bridge and the stretches in the 3rd bridge and that all too awesome diminished run at the end in triplets.
and recently when I can play through the first step of the new song with just by acoustic. I plugged into an AER amp and practice and modifie and indeed that's really important for play TE song.
You're a great story teller Tim! I was feeling your excitement when you recalled your show opening for Tommy. Saw him play live twice, insanely memorable concerts everytime! Much appreciate your well-made tutorials, now looking at Lewis & Clark. Thanks so much!
Thanks Arthur! Seeing Tommy live for the first time was a real life-altering experience, and a lot of people here on the channel have offered similar stories! Take your time for the Lewis & Clark song. It takes time, but it is worth every ounce of effort required.
WoW I was captivated the entire time! I only was introduced to Tommy Emmanuel's music last year. and i have been trying to learn some of his technique. I recently subscribed and I hope I can learn a lot over here. Thanks for all of your input!!!If I can't get to Tommy Emmanuel himself, Your the next best! (My mom was born in Antwerp)
All I get is inspiration from this channel from you sharing your personal struggles during the Pandemic to this great video. Thanks and can't wait to play my guitar.
That was a great story and I was captivated throughout. Tommy is a treasure. I wish I had discovered him sooner! Check out my cover of Drivetime, recorded straight from my bed. Your lesson is one of few that touches on all of the technique needed to play it.
Great Video, this will really help, i find myself trying to play to hard or to fast. i really like your teaching style , i am just now finishing up guitar boogie, looking forward to the next one.
Great! Welcome to the channel, Steve! I'm planning to launch my own website soon which will feature all the tutorials (incl difficulty rating, community board etc). Stay tuned!
As much as I like your playing and tutorials, I might like your story even better. What awesome experiences you've had with Tommy, and so eloquently shared! Thanks so much!
@@TimVanRoy I've been a military tech school instructor and also done a fair amount of public speaking. With that background, I tend to subconsciously evaluate others' teaching/presentation skills, and I can be hyper-crtitcal. I don't try to do that, it just happens automatically. Trust me, you have nothing to be nervous about.
I play 10 hours a day during lockdown..my guitar action 1.75/1.50 on the 12th fret..I also check for high spot on the frets and level/crown it..😁. The jumbo frets sounds cool but need to replace the saddle d if I install it..I play real soft when my wife is sleeping.,🤣 yes the louder the volume/gain it is the softer touch I need..I just play with the Fishman amp..nice story..👍🏻
The story about the jumbo frets has been debunked since posting this video! Watch my recent interview with Tommy for more information on this subject 😎

Quelle histoire incroyable!
Appreciate all your efforts and let me say those efforts of yours are blatantly obvious in the results. Thanks and love hearing you play acoustic guitar. Awesome story at the end.
That's fantastic video, you are really great and generous to share these important informations with us. Could you please make a video about warming up before playing? Like physical exercises for hands or how to handle nervousness, thank you!!
Great idea! It's a topic I would have to do quite a bit of research on, especially the aspect of tackling nervousness when playing. I'll put it down to check out as soon as I have redone all the old tutorial videos!
Tim, what an incredible story! You are truly inspiring to me. thanks you so much for your channel and all the tips. You have really made a big difference in my playing.

I watch all you videos intend to at least many times already considering how many time I rewind 😂
Well done and spot on. Thanks for your commitment and your drive to help. Love the backstory.
Great to hear! There's a lot coming your way here in 2021! And I was born in Antwerp too 😎
A great story…..and useful information….👍🍷
Thanks Emlyn! I added some info down below in the comments: the story on the jumbo frets has been debunked by now, so please disregard that!
All I get is inspiration from this channel from you sharing your personal struggles during the Pandemic to this great video. Thanks and can't wait to play my guitar.
That is exactly what I'm aiming for! Thanks for the lovely comment!
Thanks Tim. I've been enjoying your tutorials, and really appreciate these tips.
That was a great story and I was captivated throughout. Tommy is a treasure. I wish I had discovered him sooner! Check out my cover of Drivetime, recorded straight from my bed. Your lesson is one of few that touches on all of the technique needed to play it.
Watched your version, liked it and commented. Nicely done!
Great Video,
this will really help, i find myself trying to play to hard or to fast.
i really like your teaching style ,
i am just now finishing up guitar boogie, looking forward to the next one.
Glad to hear! Good luck with Guitar Boogie!
What a great story ! I enjoy a lot! Thank you for your tips ! I will focus on that
thanks for the precious advices.. and the story at the end is amazing
Great video. Looking forward to discovering your work on this channel
Thanks Mike! Speaking on camera is still something I get nervous about (especially without a guitar), so it is nice to hear progress is being noticed!
@@TimVanRoy haha.,ok I watched that vid before but i think I skip to guitar setup..I’m guitar setup ocd..🤣.will check it out again..👍🏻
great tips and story.
II am V you my friend I have always wanted to play with tummy you got something that I always wish for but I’ve learned a lot from just watching you and listening to you thank you so much merry Christmas happy new year in the United States I guess that’s what we call it but anyway love your story love everything that you play keep up the work thank you so much I appreciate it
Don't give up! Keep practicing, one day Tommy might notice 😜
Tim, you are the best guitar teacher in UA-cam ever! What a great story between you and Tommy!
Thanks Eric! I hope these tips turn out to be useful!
Your videos are excellent. Thank you
No thanks Chad, I'm happy to help!
Very Lovely story Tim i think those moments with Tommy are stored in your mind that are never to gonna be cleaned:)
Hey Tim! Arguably your very best video yet. Mind opening! And your humble mien makes your lessons that much more pleasant to follow. Thank you. 🙏🏽
Great and useful video. I use to play very strong, will try to play more soft. Thanks
Great to hear! I'll get back to your question about lessons tomorrow, just watch your inbox 😜
Quelle histoire incroyable!
This is super helpful.. Thank you for so much sharing.. You are an inspiration
I love this story! This is great!
Appreciate all your efforts and let me say those efforts of yours are blatantly obvious in the results. Thanks and love hearing you play acoustic guitar. Awesome story at the end.
Thanks David! I really appreciate that!
Incredible video. Thank you for sharing, Tim. 🙏 absolutely brilliant guidance.
Amazing story! You channel is a gem, you play amazingly. Thanks for sharing
i love your voice
Tim, what an incredible story! You are truly inspiring to me. thanks you so much for your channel and all the tips. You have really made a big difference in my playing.
Great to hear Chris! That is what I hoped to achieve with the lessons!
What a wonderful video. Great tips, and a very engaging personal story. Thanks!
Glad you enjoyed it! I hope the tips give you some results!
Thank you ❤️❤️❤️....
Tim you are such a good tutor ...I've watched some couple of your videos and find it great....keep up👍 my friend...love from india
😉 Take care!
Thank you man to give us a channel just for the music of Tommy Emmanuel, it's over than our dream... Benjamin Caleb cgp
Thanks Benjamin! I will be expanding to other artists in 2021, but Tommy will remain the backbone for quite some time!
😍😍 your are the greatest!!! 💪💪
Such great points you make Tim....

No plans of stopping any time soon! I have tutorials lined up on Patreon to be released all the way up to May!
Lovely story! I almost feel, I was there on stage with you ... must have been an extraordinary experience.
Also, some great playing suggestions, like playing relaxed and softly. My setup is close to yours. Keep up the good work!
It sure was intense and memorable 😅. I can still recall every second of it to this day...
Thank you so much for this !
Please make that video on efficient practice soon, Tim. I could really use some advice there.
I'm making my schedule this week! There is so much to go through!
Thanks a lot for this really valuable lesson.
Thanks very very much the Videos. What can i say so i can learn from your videos its clear to learn. Great Job 😎 TCB 😎
Just remember to disregard the info on the jumbo frets! I recently interviewed Tommy and that info isn't correct...
Amazing story !!!! 😍😍
