Hi! Yall Hollis & Nancy💕 I hav been a long time subscriber of yours, I used my Black Cow for the first time also bc of you using it. I hope you see this, I'm growing sweet potatoes in a small section of my garden, I want to get as many as possible. My question is since they are on the ground and I've been trying to keep my runners (vines) as close to my dirt as possible so it will connect and grow more SP. Is it OK to use a U shaped object to get my vines to stay close to the dirt? Will this help me grow more SP from the vines? And is it OK to put my manure tea on UT as an added fertilizer? I' put bone meal and blood meal in when I planted the slips, but I thought adding the extra ammendment for the new ones that catch & root. Do the SP hav to be in a controlled temp during the cure period? Thank you so much for everything you hav taught me thez past years on YT I couldn't hav done it without you all Take care & God Bless you both Joyce Carter Virginia
Hello Hollis & Nancy! Here is a way to cook sweet potatoes I saw on another video by a man who has all kinds of cooking hints. He said he found the best way to cook sweet potatoes is: to first wash them, and then split them down the middle, lengthwise. It's best to use a chubby sweet potato for this, I believe. Now, all you do is place them cut-side down on a parchment lined cookie sheet, pop them in the oven...I think at about 400 to 425 degrees and bake until you see the juice oozing out of them that's turned dark and bubbly. Then take them out and turn them flesh-side up, add butter and pepper on them and enjoy! These are the best tasting sweet potatoes fixed this way! I don't know why they taste so good prepared like this, but they sure do! Try this and see how great they taste! And thanks for your always interesting and educational videos...the best! kristi
You taught me well. From your last sweet tater video I planted 5 big blue 20ngallon tubs from Lowe's. Got 98.2 pounds last year. One tater was as big as my thigh. It was Christmas dinner sweet taters for 24 with lots of leftovers.
@@HollisNancysHomestead did you know you can plant the potato in dirt to get your slips instead of messing with water in a jar? Deep south homestead has a video on it
Wow that’s awesome, I have 3 45lb tubs with Yukon gold and Pontiac red, they all flowered and have started to die back, hope to get a bunch of taters like you
@@bcrouch2626 I've sprouted slips both ways. No big difference to me with the exception that neither started producing slips until the temps were right. With no water you have the additional materials factor and need to keep them some kind of moist anyway. With the water you have to provide maintenance keeping the water level and changing it out every so often. And if you don't immerse / hang the SWPO too deep from the bottom end in the water you have more potential for slip creation that way. Laying it horizontal under some material gives the same advantage. That's been my experience, anyway.

You guys put such a smile on my face ❤️. I’m sure you’re really busy but if you ever wonder what else to upload, I would love cooking videos of Nancy’s delicious food. 😋
Love your smile😃❤️. Nancy has many new cooking videos coming out this year. She has a sauce video scheduled for release on January 30th at 4:00pm. All her videos are from garden to fork❤️
Thank you Hollis & Nancy for another great video! You produce the best tutorial gardening on youtube, from beginning to end including the cooking, eating and enjoying the rewards of all your hard work! God Bless!
I will tell you two! you got me, as soon as I heard 10 words out of each of to know that you know what your doing. By the end of the video I knew you all are my kind of people. I learned so much from y’all that I will use next time I grow sweet taters. Thank you sincerely, and may God bless you… Amen
Your videos couldn’t be more perfect. Thank you for the progression videos and taking the mystery (and fear) out of growing some of these seemingly complicated methods. I bought sweet potato slips once. They were expensive and arrived rotten and slimy. But I can do this - and in a pot? I have some giant fabric pots I would love to try this in. God bless you, and Bing Bing too!
I know I’m watching older videos, and I have watched your channel for some time. But I just wanted to let you know that the little message at the end of each one is so inspiring to a fairly new Christian
I did sweet potatoes last year for the first time and they did great. I planted 12 slips and 5 died. But I was able to give few big ones to my mom and still have enough for my family. Started my own slips this year and hoping for even better results come spring. Thanks for this video. Love you both.
Thank you for taking the time to really show how to grow the veggies and make the potting mix. I'm going to try to grow the purple sweet taters this year. I've heard that the purple ones have more of the vitamins that fight cancer cells. Not sure how true that is but it's worth eating unique sweet taters anyway.

Purple sweet potatoes are my favorite things to eat and you’re right - when you see that color, they are filled with compounds called polyphenols that are wonderful and healthy substances. Not only are they pretty, they are extremely healthy to eat. I watched this video a few times, preparing to plant my own in big metal buckets. I’ve been growing the roots, it’s nice and hot and I’m preparing the soil today. Thanks to you both, I have an idea how to grow them. Wish me luck - Hopefully I won’t have to keep buying them at the farmers market.❤️🍠
I planted purple sweet potatoes for the first time this past summer and it's now October and I can't wait to flip the tubs over and see what I thanks for the video. I enjoyed watching your garden grow almost as much as watching mine. God bless
...thank you so much, as new gardener here in germany which is the weather is my greatest challenge 😅 ...your channel helps me a lot for the information you shared❤🇩🇪
I had an organic purple sweet potatoe for the first time recently. I couldn't believe how delicious it was. Ive grown the orange ones for three years now and have started always my own slips. This year im gonna grow the purple ones also. Im in NY zone 6a. I plant them in June and dig them up late October depending on the frost.
I thank you for informing me on the best way to get the starts, planting the sweet potatoes. And the best mix of soil to use, never thought of the bone or blood meal. I love sweet potatoes and now hopefully ill beable to grow some. Those purple one are really neat. May the Good Lord always be with you two and bingbing. Love ya❤ take care. From Michigan.
Ok, this is what I'm going to try next year. I live in California and we had a very cool and foggy summer, which is unusual for us. Harvesting them was a chore so this looks like my style of growing.
Third time watching this video now i get it ... i brought some slips this past spring. Put 6 slips in a Bucket only a few grew after that the cats and animals got to it before I did but now I know to win I soak my slips get a good root system and put it in a bigger pot so they won't toss it over thank you so much Horace have a blessed day
The stringy ones are also good for making slips. If you don't overwinter any slips that is. My purple sweet potatoes started Blooming last week... still have another 3-6 weeks of good weather for them to plump more.
Hi there. Love the harvest and love watching you and the Mrs. I noticed that when you planted the slips you planted multiple slips per hole in your containers. Is that how they should be planted vs planting a single slip per hole? Does it increase yield? I planted mine 1 slip per hole but now I'm wondering if I should have planted them in multiples per hole.
I love your videos brother. Thank you for all your hard work Thank you for a being to end video Thank your for all your knowledge Please make more videos you inspire me to grow my own food
Great video. Thanks so much from the UK. I must say you both look like you have a great relationship. I’ve just purchased some purple sweet potatoes from a Japanese supermarket local to us and I’ve started propagating them in old jam and honey jars. Really excited to start growing them. We have a large extended family though and they’ve all started hearing about them so I think I’m gonna have to grow big 😂
Hi Hollis and Nancy. You two are the cutest couple. I have a question please. Besides the orginal bone meal and the handful of blood meal you put in the containers before you put in your slips, do you add any other fertilizers later as the the slips grow until harvest? Thank you.
Thank you….an Alaskan, I managed to grow a beauty from a sweet potato last year! Alas I was too eager to set it out and paid the price. Will try again this year with your help….taters and cabbages I can grow….But sweet potatoes and okra so far are a challenge :)
You two make me smile! I didn't do well with my sweet potatoes last year but I never give up. I didn't amend the soil like I should've but I will this time.
I just stumbled upon your channel and now I’m hooked! You two are so sweet to one another, watching your video really give me peace and hope of how we can grow our own food and be greatful for what God gave us, hope you are safe from the hurricane 🙏
Great video! Bing bing is so cute helping you! Hollis did you put the slips in tap water or distilled water or filtered water? I’m getting mine out in April

My African foster daughter cooks sweet potato leaves. She loves them!!!
We do too. Nancy uses them in fish soup
How does she cook them?

Thank you for taking the time to show how to grow the veggies .
I love your purple food!!! Thanks for another day video!
Thank you.
i have my slips rooting..cant wait to grow them
I always enjoy your videos looks good 😋 sweet potatoes 🍠 are very good for you more than white potatoes 🥔 but, I love 😍 them both 😋😋 👍🏽
Beautiful video, beautiful couple. Thank you for information on how to grow the purple potatoes in containers. I learned something new today,
Thank you….an Alaskan, I managed to grow a beauty from a sweet potato last year! Alas I was
too eager to set it out and paid the price. Will try again this year with your help….taters and cabbages I can grow….But sweet potatoes and okra so far are a challenge :)
Both need hot weather. How hot is your summers? I know you get plenty of daylight but don’t know the high temps during the summer months
I adore the two of you! Such imperative detailed content given by loving Christian's. God bless you both and bing bing. 🙏
Thanks for teaching me about growing Sweet Potatoes team - looking forward to giving it a go. Blessings.
So far this is the BEST sweet potato video yet!! I will try that tub technic and make it easier to dump out when it's time to harvest them.
Glad it was helpful!
Very nice! Thanks for sharing your experience. I live in northern lower Michigan and I love sweet potatoes! I’m thinking I may try growing some🥰
You can do this. Wait for warm nights
You two make me smile! I didn't do well with my sweet potatoes last year but I never give up. I didn't amend the soil like I should've but I will this time.
Never give up ❤️
I just stumbled upon your channel and now I’m hooked! You two are so sweet to one another, watching your video really give me peace and hope of how we can grow our own food and be greatful for what God gave us, hope you are safe from the hurricane 🙏
love this! We grow this on Molokai
Great video! Bing bing is so cute helping you! Hollis did you put the slips in tap water or distilled water or filtered water? I’m getting mine out in April
We have a deep well. I have grown slips in both city tap as well as distilled water. To be on the safe side, go with distilled water
