Apple trees, black cherry, and plum are in full bloom. Bee's are going crazy on them. Love hearing them just humming away
Hey Dave, Thanks for all you do for us other beekeepers. It has just been one year since I started beekeeping from a swarm that came to my house and today I caught my first swarm so now I have 2 hives and soon to be 3. I even started to build my own boxes and frames, I have my own woodshop and the time to play. Great info for us beginners.
Well thank Thomas, you're a good man.
My first overwintered hive - started last year in Pennsylvania then moved to Michigan. my colony survived but post my mentor… listening to you really helps
Way to go Barbara, congratulations of winter survival and glad listening to me helps.
Thank you David for all your tips! I did my first inspection last week but after watching your video, I think missed a few things so I'll have to redo it. Thank you for helping me realize my beekeeping dream with your tips, and tricks of the trade:)
Gosh that's a good brood pattern!
great stuff Dave. Today I binged on a bunch of your videos and got out to inspect the hive for the first time since I got my beees. Thanks for all the good stuff!
That is awesome!
Thanks Dave as always for another great video. I learn something new each time. Also, will get the word out to friends to like your channel. The goal of 100K is almost in reach! Thanks again. Kevin
Thank you for all of your helpful videos and tips.
Hi Da ve, I'm a very new beekeeper, just got my packages about a week ago. I attended class last year but life got in the way and didn't get started until now. I am fortunate enough to have a mentor working with me. I do enjoy your videos. Very helpful and informative.
Your content is interesting but your bare-handed approach got me subscribed!
Clear information, Thank you!
Hey Dave. Thank you for such good information.
Thanks David for all the super tips!!! I signed up for your beginners class package and I am enjoying it immensely!!! You surely know BEES!! I found my unmarked queen using your tips in lesson…. It really was a great feeling!! Wanted to jump and shout but remembered to be in slow motion and no quick moves…I knew she was there because I am seeing new eggs and larva but to finally see her made my day of beekeeping extra sweet!!
Thank you so much!
I just want to say thank you for the really valuable content. I've been watching for a few years and installed my first nuc on Saturday. Despite being the first time I've handled bees it all went really smoothly just following the sort of things you do in your videos. I had so much more confidence in what I was doing than if I'd just read a few books.
Awesome and I'm very glad to hear that. That's what I'm here for.
Thanks for the tip you rock. God bless y’all
Great stuff, David!
Great to see your tips. Really reassuring week by week help. I have my first ever 2 swarms here in Dorset in the UK
Thank you all, David!
Gosh that's a good brood pattern! Love your videos! You and Sherry make an amazing team!
Thank you!
13:31 Loved the content quality and light of your video!
Thanks David for this video. Love it.
You have great information. I have never had beetles or mites. I started with Italians April 2022. 2 hives. All great. 1 super gave me 26 lbs honey. Took them 2 months for 1 super full. Brood in deep hive filled. So happy. Then fall time to winterize in NC. Close to border of VA and I 95. Insulation and pollen patties water. Checked on warmer days and one day all bees gone. It was February. Both hives. They did not die because very little dead bees. I could only deduce they were cold and went elsewhere. I learned that I should have put solid bottom board on not screened. Also better to use that wrap in my area. Ok
So now year 2 and Russians. They are nuts. They are going to town
immediately. I have learned how to find my queen with no marking. I decided to try deep hive with feeder up top. Water with vitamins and other side lemon balm. I have plenty of bee flowers so don't need pollen patties until winter. My question is when should I add the super?
Great video David
Thank Sharing your knowledge of beekeeping
I did hive inspections this past weekend one of my hives seem to be exploding while the other one I think swarmed could not find no queen very little brood and five cat queen cells
My mentor is coming out this weekend to do an inspection
Look forward to seeing your next video
Gosh that’s good brood pattern. Videos are very helpful. Thx
Thanks
Love the plastic visor in the hat. I struggle looking through the mesh.
Love your videos! 🐝 🐝 🐝
I so appreciate you and all the detailed info you provide! THANK YOU!
Enjoy the videos David. Keep up the great work! On your way to 100k✌️
Great Video, thanks for passing on your knowledge.
My pleasure!
Liked your glasses sitting on that hive next to the 1 you where working on. That was nice
Thanks for your time🐝
I'm definitely gonna try this for first time
Thanks. I enjoy your videos. Very well made and informative
David... Another Great Video ! 👍
Tip :
Newbie beekeepers sometimes also replace Frames and or Boxes Back to Front ! 😖
Tip :
What I do : ✔
1) I always mark New Frames with a Sharpie, saying 'Wired' ' Natural Comb only' or even my 'Intials' all at ONE END...
These are placed so Text is at the 'BACK' Wall of the Hive.... If text is near the Entrance, in a "Doh"! moment... You need to Change it to BACK Wall. Aka in the correct orientation re matching Wax Pattern, like fitting a jigsaw piece along side its correct neighbour. 👀 Simples ! 😎
2) Bees mainly add BROOD at the FRONT end position on a Frame, and Honey away from the Door ! (Especially on Frames in Horizontal Hives.)
Guess the Tower of Wooden Boxes, or a Horizontal Hive, replicates a "Tree Trunk" where Honey is away from, or way above the Nest, out of the reach of Bears in a Regular Hive, or a kind of "Felled Trèe" for H.H... Again Stores are mainly above, or at the Back of each Frame, and as far away from the Entrance, (My H.H has a Supering Area furthest away to the Right end in my DIY ex Log Box H.H !
Here in Scotland 🏴 we don't have Bears, but as the "UA-cam in OZ, called the Fat Bee Man," states, we all look like "Polar Bears" in our White Bee Suits ! 🤣
🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝
Happy Beekeeping 2022.
🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝
Thanks!
I made a veil like yours what a big difference in seeing🐝🐝
Good looking brood:)
105k today. Good job hitting that 100. I have bees on the way and have watched a few of your videos. Thanks
This is great advice
Gosh that's a good brood pattern 😊
Gosh thatˋs a good brood pattern 😊
I enjoy all your videos very educational
Thanks for the encouragement!
Thanks
I learned something new. I did not know the queen does not mate with the drones in the colony. Makes sense.
Gosh that's a good brood patter 😅
This is a great channel thank you putting these videos together
I love watching your videos. I learn something everytime🙂
Thank you
Glad my video was helpful Kelly
Gosh that’s a good brood pattern…..on both sides that’s a good brood pattern 😁🐝
I admire the macho men who can ape their apiaries without a suit but just about five years ago I suddenly became VERY allergic after several stings in a giant wasp attack. I got a general sting allergy. So now it‘ s the full suit, hat, gloves, suit of armor, laser pistol, plexiglass riot shield and two epi pens in each side pocket! It’s hot, it’s uncomfortable and heavy but I can’t give up my bees! So just call me chicken little! I’ll use a couple old broomsticks to hold the sky up. Thanks for another great video! New subscriber here! Ps: I had a severe head injury 30 years ago so I learn coping skills with memory and concentration with EVERYTHING I do. My boxes are marked with arrows and the words ‘Top’/‘Bottom’. It’s a bit like with an Alzheimer’s patient except it’s consistent and predictable so coping skills work better.
Thanks!
Thanks Johnny
Hi there Dave. First timer from Jamaica. Enjoying your video.
Gosh, that's a good brood pattern.
Very cool video. When I was in the youtube list mode, the pic for this video showed a beautiful dark queen. I really love that kind of stuff. Thanks.
And wow. the modification for the 'visor' on your bee veil is interesting. I can see why you'd do that to keep he veil sticking to the face, which would get you stung. Smart.
That is a dark queen and isn't she HUGE!!
XD Yes! Thanks.
Thanks for your videos David. I have learned a lot from them🐝
Thanks
Hi Dave,
What makes a medium super? Do you use a queen excluder between the deep and the medium?
Thanks, love your videos
I was going to say good brood pattern before you said it!
Thanks for being so awesome with the giveaway of information
It’s looking great! Eh!
Just helped unload a honey process line off of the truck for a friend
David, we love your videos! I just started using green Drone comb. Once the girls draw out the drone comb, do you replace with another green frame, a regular frame or leave the space open for 48 hours until I can return it. Also, after I freeze it, and it comes back to room temperature, is there anything i need to do before reinstalling it? Thank you for all you do.
Hi Dave you reminded me of Mr. Roger's in this video. What if that funny comb you saw has brood in it? In April I installed package bees had similar comb but with brood. Looks like queen cells as well.
Thanks! If it had brood, I'd leave it.
getting ma nuc tonight!
Do you sell those green drone frames? I haven't seen them on your websites.
It's really confusing for me when you call every single medium box a super. I run all medium boxes and the bottom boxes are brood boxes the top boxes where they lay honey are my supers. Anyway just a thought. Love your videos!
Is there such thing as a "controlled swarm?"
For example:
Let's say you can see a swarm getting ready to flee the hive...
You prepare a swarm trap, in a more favorable location, baited, etc...
Knowing that bees are bees, and will do what they do, would you think they would favor your prepared trap over a random and unfavorable spot say 60 feet up a pine tree(lol)?
Basically, can you allow your hive to swarm AND make the event easier for you(the collector)?
Note: I'm not referring to preparing splits ahead of time to prevent swarming, I'm talking allowing them to swarm naturally AND have the event play out where it's beneficial to you, the keeper.
Just curious.
Thanks!
👍
Thanks Dave I see that you don't put the frames back in the order of the way they came out. Does it confuse the bees hay this ain't right?
When you freeze your drone comb do you kill the drones?
What would you think about protecting my hives with a dog kennel to keep the bears out.
👍👍
gosh that's a good brood pattern
🔥🔥
How long before you start seeing brood to installing your bees thank you
5-7 days
@@beek Thank you so much
Hello sir Dave, do you have a company? I'm interested to apply as a bee keeper, I'm waiting for your reply thank you and God bless....from Philippines
David, do you ever use formic pro for mites?
Rarely, but it is my preferred method even over OA
@@beek Good to know, an employee at Betterbee recommended the product to me. I'm just going to monitor mite levels and use the formic pro if needed instead of investing in an OA vaporizer. Thanks 🙏
I’m a new beekeeper, and I’ve only had my 2 hives for a month. My bees are building honey comb all over the place…hanging down from the frames and under the cover. Is that normal?
No, have you taken a basic beekeeping class?
@@beek yes, I’ve taken an online one and one in person with the people where I got my bees from.
Hi Roseanne, Sounds like then maybe the hive is built wrong or with the wrong measurements. A properly built hive respects bee space. If bee space is ever ignored bees will build comb is wrong places in a hive. 3/8 of an inch is the idea gap, where bees will not build propolis nor comb. They leave it so they can walk through the gap.
They are the standard Langstroth hives that I bought from the bee supplier. I will check again, maybe I don’t have the frames tight enough together.
Yes, sometimes adding more wax to the frames helps too. But I realize a new beginner may not have extra wax sitting around.
Busy bees
Hi david
Why would the Queen be up on the divider under the top
Gosh that’s a good brood pattern!
Did my first walk away split with the nuc I purchased from you last year. Worked out quite nicely. Produced a queen that is black as night 😊
Great, this one in this video is dark!
Thanks, for providing some valuable content again!
Glad you like them!
just did my first inspection of my first hive..what an intense feeling. They weren't eating any of my sugar water so I was concerned about that but frames are looking good.can't wait until next week
Hi David - awesome videos! Really nice to have such a detailed calm and logical explanation that I can apply to my apiary.
I shall also undertake some of your courses so thank you!!
Hi David
Very informative. I learn alot every time I watch your videos. Keep it up and thank you!
Our bees died over the winter northeast Pennsylvania, and then a swarm came and was stealing our honey residue.
Learning always learning, made a split and caught one swarm this week 👍🐝
Been watching you for years. I was so impressed by what you did to your vail I had to try it. Waiting on the glue to dry and I'll send you a pic tomorrow! I'm very excited about using it! Oh, and I used the green drone frames and I just checked my first drawing out drone cells. Pearly white! Gotta love that. No beetles or mites.
Thanks for watching for years Dennis! I love my window veil and it is so easy to make yourself. Mine is alittle too high. I didn't think through how you look more down into the hive rather than straight out.
14:15 thanks Dave, I'm new to beekeeping,. You are now my new Guru!
Thanks for the reminder about the drone comb. Do you scrape it off after freezing it for a few days- or give it back to the bees to clean up?
Thanks David for the awesome content! I’m about to EAS out of the USMC here in a couple months and can’t wait to come back to Indiana and start bee keeping! I couldn’t help but notice your shirt at the beginning of the video for Morse Lake!
Thank you for your service in the Marines! Yes, I drive through there once a month and loved eating at the Boathouse Kitchen.
Hey David! Thank you for your videos! These are so valuable to us and especially ppl that are greenhorn newbies like me!
David, I love your content but I feel like sometimes you promote your channel a little to heavily. You are what got me into beekeeping, can't wait to see you hit 100k subs!
I love these videos I learn so much just got my first bran new piece of and hive kit
In 20 some hing days the brood in the aupr must be born... it is true, people do not understand
Hey Dave watched your previous video where you made a split and took the queen with the split and left it facing your building, I did exactly the same thing down to a T , on the 19 May but very little activity, outside of the hive so I had a little peek 22nd May found the Queen and decided to put 2 more frames worth of bees in the super ,wanted to know how long it takes for them to get active in their new location, I moved them 4 hundred feet from the main hive .thanks for any information you can give me ,just watched ,this latest video ,always enjoy them.
Sometimes it may take a week or more
@@beek okay thanks Dave ,wasn't sure since this was my first split
Rewatching. I draw arrows on frames. Do you think nematodes work for hive beetles? Worth the 35$? I build tall permanent super secure stands for my lazutin hives. Top of hive is even with my wast. I mostly use Lazutin frames that touch at top bar.
Thank you for your videos! Subscribed! New Beekeeper from Dubai!
Hi, I'm just starting in beekeeping. I feel a bit nervous when I put the frames back and the covers on that I'm going to squish (and kill?) a bee. Do they know to get out of the way? Thanks
Hi, Dave! I’m learning, so I can one day be a beekeeper, too! ❤️❤️ Thank you!
Hi David,Iovely programme i have ja laying bee, what should i do, do I put some eggs or a mated queen, plz help.
