Great video David! I received all of my order yesterday. Boy that was fast! Thank you and sherry for the surprise inside! The personal thank you makes things that much more meaningful. We hope y’all have a blessed day!
David, I have a question for you. I have been collecting propolis now for 4 yrs and about 2 cups. How can I use this propolis? If you have links to directions on how to mix up a cream or balm please make them available. YOU ARE DOING A GREAT JOB 👍
David thanks for all your help as a first year beekeeper. Question, would putting in purple martin houses in the area of my hives be a poor choice and hard on my bee population? Thanks
Hi David. Hope you are well. I am in Brisbane Australia. We have news about Mites found in NSW another state south of us. I have questions about when to use oxalic acid on my hives if the mites get away from where they are now. Here in Brisbane we don’t have a very cold winter. So the brood will never stop completely. Is our summer the best time to treat for mites? Any help please. David.
From your teaching, she will not lay in the honey/resource area. Works as a natural queen excluder. She will migrate back down into the brood chamber and look for empty polished cells.
David, I was wondering if it is okay to do a mite treatment with a honey super on if the super in question is being left for the bees over winter? Looking forward to your winter be kind boards to become available again 😀
Thanks Alan for your interest in our winter bee kinds winter feeding system. As for your question about can you treat with honey supers on if you plan to leave the super just for the bees. Obviously it depends on the type of treatment as some allow for supers to remain on the hive. The label is the law. So if it gives specific directions for supers, you MUST follow that law. You might forget or if something happened to you, the next owner may harvest the honey for consumption. Not to mention what can be absorbed in the wax.
The super full of honey acts as a queen excluder because the queen won’t cross the honey. I call it the honey bridge. I just took my queen excluders off because of had a full super of honey.
I worked for a commercial bee company with about 1,400 hives. sometimes weather is irrelevant just gotta work them. I have 4 colonies myself. It is much more relaxed.
The honey super acts as a queen EXCLUDER by not having any open places for her to lay eggs. She has no interest in an area she can't use so when she encounters a full super she turns around, sometimes :)
A Super Full of Honey, acts as a Natural Queen Excluder, as probably the Box below will have a Honey Bridge in it (top part of Brood Frame has an Arch of Capped Honey, (Nectar and a bit of Pollen nearest to the Area where the Queen has, or is Laying Eggs in. Remember, to Add Extra Frames of Drawn Comb into the Brood Edges (Central Bee Nest) So the Queen can lay there ! And not in your Honey Super... who wants Larva (Grubs) on your Buttered Toast ! 🤣 Tip: Newbies can also add a New Frame into that centre position, and add that already Laid up Capped Brood in a New Box above that Brood, but below that Super (!) This gives the Queen more room to Lay, Bees to Store Nectar and Pollen for the pending Baby Bees... And Nurses Bees will move up ! ... to look after that upper Capped Brood (Nurse Bees are Wired/Made to look after nearly Born Bees... Nursing that Capped Brood ! Easy way to increase your Brood in that added Box. More so if you add full Drawn Out Comb... An instant Nursery in the making ! 🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝 Happy Beekeeping 2022. 🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝
David, I love your videos, I have learned a lot from watching. You are one of about 4 other beekeepers that have videos and it is great. Living in Michigan it is hard to winter over the bees when they come from down south, so I started catching swarms and they seem to be doing great. I made a double deep long insulated hive year before last and installed one of the swarms I caught in it and I have never had a hive as productive as they are. I keep bees for the fun of it and to pollinate my garden, I end up giving my honey away to friends but like I said I'm in it for the pure enjoyment. Keep up the great videos.....
Moved my bee yard about 100’ from where it was and now have a fire pit. How do you feel about a fire pit about 100’ from my hives? My wife and I enjoy having a few brews couple times a week at night by the fire. A bit worried about the smoke but it is wide open. Opinions??
Hi David, you said ask. I have a swarm from last summer. They are defensive. From 20yards from the hive. They already in early April have a super full of honey,I've added the second. Being such good honey producer's. I've kept them. I'm going to try your slow motion. Any other suggestions, besides requeening?
Hi I am Bernalth from Namibia in southern west of Africa, thanks you for all your videos they have been very helpful to setting up my hive.. Question I have two beehives if I inspect them the next day the bees leave how do I inspect hives.? I think African bees are sensitive, that's just a guess.. please help 🖐️
David i have noticed you dont seem to use inner covers with your telescoping lids, I was told by my original mentor to always use inner covers ,can you explain why you don't ?
I had wax moths in my hive i just got done going through the whole thing found six or seven lavas I smushed. But I seen the moth went down to the bottom I pulled a bunch of frames out looked twice I couldn't find her I have to go back in in a couple weeks look for her again
@@beek I don't no? It does look week. I treaded for mites in the fall after finding them. I guess I should do another mite test. They have plenty of garden and a corn feild and all the pastures are just covered in Clover
I have a small swarm colony that I’ve requeened and 2 weeks after the hive was robbed by other bees. I started feeding and closed up the hive immediately for 48 hours. What else could I do to help them survive?
Ex- beeteam6 6 member here. Although not a member I am still enjoying and getting a lot out of your videos. Keep up the great work. I haven’t abandoned you!
Off topic but you are my most reliable source. I build my own equipment. It's Langstroth but the brood depth is deep+medium and the brood frames are also custom. Question: would it be a bad idea to install bottom board screen on the underside of the brood box and install an entrance into the side of the box? I'm considering this for next year nucs, with them being 3 nucs to a box with each nuc getting 3 extra deep frames. The dividers will take up some of the space. This way, the hive stand could be lower to the ground.
Hi david i have a question abot banking queens whats the longest a virgin can go unmated when banking before they will no longer go out to mate. also what is the longest you can bank a mated queen for thank you for all your videos great stuff.
Thank you David, so much great information. I’ve been on a weekly hive check to stay on track but haven’t been able to get to the hives since over 10 days due to being away and hot weather. So, this makes me feel a bit better since seeing your video. Thank you
Dave. I noticed you had some hive beetles in your hive in this video. I have noticed a few more this year in my hives even strong hives. I remember a few years ago several UA-cam beekeepers had problems with SHB and the last 2 not so many. It has been wet this year with rain every few days. Could a wet year cause more SHB issues?.
Hi David Thanks for all your videos I have learned so much from them My mentor and I have discussed some topics from your videos and he enjoys them as well My two hives started out great this year and I made a split from one of them around the end of May (thanks to your video) it is doing very well they raised their own queen and now I have two deep on that hive and that hive has lots of brood in it Please keep the video coming Thanks
I always look under the screened bottom board when I know or think I’ve dropped or otherwise lost a queen outside the hive. I’ve found them there several times over the years, just as you described.
Thanks David for the tips. If you have 1st year nucs that your leaving a super on for resources, do you take the super off while you are feeding them to get to the fall flow? I ask because if you feed during the dearth with the super on won’t there be syrup in the super when you get ready to harvest the honey the following year?
This is too funny that you just posted this video….I had the NYS bee inspector check my hives yesterday and warned him about my testy hive. The inspector had no gloves or jacket. I stood off to the side about 4 ft during the inspection without my gloves on. About a dozen bees landed on my hand. I stayed calm and just left them, until I realized they were all stinging my hand. After I removed all of the stingers I asked the inspector…you’re not getting stung over there? he said, “no they are a very good hive.” My hand is the size of a balloon today. Could it have been my watch that set them off? Also, the inspector used paper to snuff his smoker. What a coincidence.
This is good information to have as a new beekeeper. Thanks David for being so willing to share your knowledge. I love your online courses. I highly recommend them.
Sometimes you just got to go in there. We have a heatwave coming next week above 30 C so can’t leave it till next week. Your instructive videos are invaluable.
In the spirit of questions 😁 how much pollen substitute do you suggest we add per gallon of 1:1 syrup? Thank you for all the great guidance you provide to new beekeepers! It's appreciated.
I dont remeber the brand off hand but I have a bucket of it and the only instructions it gives is for dry feeding. No mention of putting it in my syrup.
Great video David! I received all of my order yesterday. Boy that was fast! Thank you and sherry for the surprise inside! The personal thank you makes things that much more meaningful. We hope y’all have a blessed day!
Glad you enjoyed the video, and glad my staff does a great job with orders.
More excellent tips such as managing the smoker, best times and conditions to inspect. TY

Anytime I've worked hives in the rain it has gone better than I thought.
@@beek Lots of smoke usually makes a difference, although I think it is possible to over smoke bees. Clouds of smoke make the beekeeper cough too.😝
What are your thoughts regarding horizontal hives?
Personal preference

Bingo
David tell me about your gloves please
Yup I'm publishing my video on gloves, should go out tonight. Keep watching for it.

How would I start bee keeping with an extremely limited budget?
David-does that crop field behind your house ever get sprayed for pesticides? If so does it ever affect your bees?
Where might I find the yellow long gloves your wearing?
What can we do as beekeepers to protect our neighbors?
If you are new to this is it good to start with those yellow gloves?
Queen won’t go into super with honey to lay eggs.
The queen wont go through an hive that is all honey
Very helpful

Does anyone know about the CO2 method of checking for mites. I here it is just as good as an alcohol wash and does not hurt bees.
I’ve tested it. It blows the top off sometimes and some bees didn’t wake up. Kinda tricky to handle.
