I saw the most fascinating interview with a scientist on the hypocampus, and how it's the autobiographical area of the brain. Apparently it can be damaged by repeated fear, and a lack of vitamin D. His analogy was of a diary, and new neurons (I think it was neurons) are needed each day to write another page. And that in a sustained state of fear (and lack of vit D) these new connections aren't created and it starts writing over whatever came before - it replaces the personality.

"What is a simple definition of socialism? Socialism is an economic system in which major industries are owned by workers rather than by private businesses. It is different from capitalism, where private actors, like business owners and shareholders, can own the means of production."
In socialist countries or non-socialist countries in Europe, taxes cover education, health and overall equality and well-being for all its population. In addition each citizen is insured for sick/accident leave and is allowed annual vacation varying from 3 to 6 weeks a year. So when I hear that the US is the best country in the world!!!! For whom?

    • @matthewkopp2391
      @matthewkopp2391 14 днів тому +6

You are illustrating two different systems, socialism and social democracy.
I am not against social democracy entirely. But it is important to understand how it came to be. One early example is Bismarck, he outlawed the socialist parties, which proved unpopular because they organized pensions and sick funds. So Bismarck adopted their social programs and expanded them in the state. Calling it Staatsocialismus, state socialism.
The criticism of social democracy is that its intention is to maintain a capitalist aristocracy. And in many countries is fueled by imperialism and exploitation of foreign countries to provide the necessary capital to have a social democracy.
One real question is do average citizens and workers have real political agency or not.
Another question would be does your society rely on a foreign exploited class.

Socialism will substitute conscious planning for the “anarchy of production” (to use Karl Marx’s term) of the marketplace. That means that rather than relying on prices and profits to tell us what we should produce and how we should produce it, socialism would abolish private property, exchange, markets, prices, and profits and substitute collective ownership and decision-making to answer those questions.
Under capitalism, we allow private owners of the means of production to experiment with alternatives and discover only after the fact which ones were best. Marx and other socialists believed not only that this was wasteful, but that it could be improved on by collectively deciding before the fact what should be produced and how, then just executing that plan, including who should receive which goods in the end. Socialism, they claimed, would be more rational and more efficient, as well as more just.

OMG. This is the problem with socialism is exactly what the professor is saying, he is saying. There are many types of socialism, and when it fails he says that’s not the one he was referring to. Then he mentions how successful some companies work under communism Co op companies. Yet never mentions that none of those companies started with the capital of co Op. “Someone” started a company & then adopted it. Try having 4 people order one Pizza & see how hard that is to agree to order. Now have 4 people start a company. It will take forever. You need leadership and someone who takes responsibility. Period…

I have been saying for some time that capitalism worked great to build a new country and worked for well over 150 years but it is now outdated. This totally reinforces that. I like this video. It is so educational and detailed in the concepts of governments. And I say concepts, not to be rigid institutions.

The problem with student debt relief is that it doesnt solve the root problem of how expensive higher education has become. On the contrary, deleting student debt would only incentivize colleges to charge even more. We have to change the incentive structure for schools. Unfortunately, one of the issues with socialist thinking is that they think just throwing money at a problem solves the issue. Its been proven time and time again that is not the case. The government is inefficient and the only thing they do well is waste money. Consider how Space X has been able advance rocket technology leaps and bonds further than NASA at a fraction of the cost. Government run industries tend to become over blown by administrators and managers that dont do anything but collect checks at the cost of taxpayers.

The US political culture has been salted over decades to react to the word, socialist. Not so in Europe, hence my amusement when reaction uses this label on anything to the left of their position. As an insult, with undertones of fearfulness. A UK socialist.

I have came from the socialist country and work there in a few companies where was groups who run companies democratically elected and it was disaster, as in that groups have been bad people too democratically elected.
Decisions have been bad and resulted that workers didn't received sallery for 1month sometimes for 2 months and even didn't received sallery for 3 months. Thus can be checked easily and confirmed.
In the whole country where was this socialist system, only 1 company had good result and prospered. This company was in specially business and maybe due this circumstances where wasn't been much competition it worked well for them but after 10 years somehow they disappeared. Not sure what happened as at that time didn't have interest into that but their name I never had again.

Look- in addition to my economic degree I almost read every book about economics, poli.science, history and such and my findings are as follows:
First there is no such thing as perfect economic system be it capitalism, socialism or anything else.
We need capital in order to fuel the economy and create wealth.
Briefly, capitalism does a good job to do so but where it falters is on the distribution and equity.
Someone gets way too much and many don't. With accumulation also comes political Monopoly bestowed up on the owners of capital.
The ideal system is democratic socialism where it seems closer of being egalitarian and less of capital and power oriented.
No matter which system you choose to manage the economic affairs there is always the potential for corruption and depravity by some individuals , groups or politicians who are bound by greed and power and ultimately that's where system breaks down and fails to deliver. History attest to this fact.

This interviewer's sharp comment on white supremacy needing to have more attention as a powerful mobilizer of the white working class, is spot on. Dr. Wolff needs to incorporate race, and how it binds lower class white people to white billionaires with whom they have nothing in common, much more. Professor Gerald Horne is someone who makes the idea of 'race' central in his analyses, I can advise people to watch interviews we did with him on our channel. It is illuminating.

There is no need for the Prof. to use the race card. The class struggle is for everyone, including the poor white folks who were preyed upon by the Upper Class, mostly, the White Supremacist. They just need to understand the economics of the class struggle.
