I had a carbon steel #1 skinner sold by Herter's of Waseca Minnesota, which I gave to my best hunting buddy. He in turn gave me a newer stainless steel #1 Grohmann, which I sent to Shawn James in Ontario. It was the best skinning knife I ever used. I now live in a country where there is no hunting and I have no guns, so it made sense to put these knives where they could be put to best use. I now make, restore and use highest quality Japanese and German kitchen type knives. It does keep me amused, plus all my friends get great sharp knives.
I have the #3 army knife in carbon steel and the D.H Russell mini folder. Love em' and don't leave home without em! The secret is out and the prices are quite reasonable as you say.
The original Canadian belt knife by Grohmann is in the Smithsonian Institute in the USA. I have numbers one to four of their knives but not this Skinner. I use the replica made by Cold Steel every single day in my kitchen. I keep the original ones just for collecting.
I love Grohmann knives, what's odd is on the company website this is the only knife they state should only be used for skinning and yet I have found it to one of the best all around hunting ,fishing and bushcraft knife out there. It really just does most everything .
Couldn't agree more. It isn't just a skinning knife, it's simply the most versatile design I've ever used. I own about 50 knives, and the #100 Grohmann is the most useful blade of them all.
That particular knife (stainless, rosewood, regular sheath) will run you just over $100 currently. That's Canadian dollars - under $80 US. Yes, Grohmann are one of the best deals around, which is why I own this exact model, and two others. Yours looks like an older model, as the current production have different stampings on the blade.
It's so sad our Canadian government decided to stop issuing grohman knives to our pilots and sailors....was very disappointing to see them not support a family owned Canadian business
