Peace,
Adam
Stumbled onto this performance because I was meeting a friend at Rockwood. The band gets on stage and I see the bassist has this weird contraption on his instrument, and I'm like, "Is that... That's fuckin Adam Neely!" Such a great show, I'm glad I got to see it.
Definite jam
"A possible jam is a definite jam." Is my new life philosophy XD
"checking tempo, not instagram" should be a shirt
It really should!
i would get one for my drummer
Yup :)
I would so buy that
Seems so hectic
How did I vlog this gig?
1) Liz Maney is a kickass videographer I could afford to hire because of Patreon, and she filmed the concert footage. She's the apartment session's videographer, and she's badass.
2) Rockwood sells multi-tracks of gigs, and (thanks to Patreon) I could buy that at the end of the night to mix later. I'm trying to get the best audio possible on these gigs since, you know. It's music. Audio is important.
3) I have a GoPro attachment for my bass. It looks a little silly sometimes, but I love the angle that I get with it. I like moving angles, and it's an easy way to get a moving angle without an extra camera person.
4) Video editing is an insanely time-consuming process for me. I could have just cut up the best clips of the night and called it a video, but I want to tell a story, and that involves pouring through many hours of clips from rehearsal and the post-gig interview and figuring out not only what sounds good, but what tells the story I want to tell about the music we made in the order we made it.
It honestly is something that I haven't seen other musicians do, so I'm kind of in uncharted waters here as far as documentary process goes. I'd like to see more people do it, but I understand why that hasn't quite happened yet...since it's so time-consuming! Thanks to Patreon, I can afford to spend my waking hours obsessing over these details.
Basically, thank you people of Patreon. You make this content possible.
Worth it. I don't even really enjoy that sort of music but the vibe really came through and made me enjoy the whole thing. Thanks.
Thanks for the run-down, Adam. I figured you were getting some help with the video. I think the hardest part of editing for me is syncing up audio with video when trying to show multiple camera angles over one song.
The effort definitely shows man, the gig vlogs are amazing, i remember seeing one with this same guy that was all oceans eleven style for a gig, was so good! Its literally like watching a movie
Thank you for having such a high standard in what you do ! And you guys look so nice to the other musicians, doing your job, no ego or whatsoever ! Really good job !
Is there any way to watch full version of your gigs? :)
>runs late for rehearsal
>enters, sets up camera, exits
>re-enters for the camera
Oh my gosh, I didn't realize that.
This is an amazing thought, but I think that Adam walked in, set up his camera, then walked around it to sit down at his spot and plug in. In edit, the jump cuts between camera positions make it seem like multiple takes. I may be wrong though.
@@XaleManix Thumbs up for your admission to maybe be wrong. Too much "certainty" in most comments. Like in every section
@@drumfynnfun wholesome mini exchange! UA-cam victory if you ask me.
XaleManix he also hired someone to film him that day
The production for these gig vlogs is at the level of a whole crew recording it. How you manage these while actually playing the gigs is extremely impressive. Inspiring stuff!
MetConcerts100 well no, it’s the quality of one guy with a YT budget filming it. Plain & simple
I know, right? Most times I am super busy worrying about the gig that I forget to record.
@@imayhaveanunbelievablysmal7406 If you're so smart, why can't you understand what he's actually saying. Adam *does* produce at the level of a recording crew
For something like this, it's SO critical to have a solid house band with seasoned musicians, with studio-caliber chops. This group KILLED IT! Thank you for sharing!
You and the drummer such are gig buddies 😘 would you please consider posting a sappy romcom montage?
I love that BASS is capitalized even in the credits.
bASS
I’ve done it. I’ve killed the chain early.
love the intercutting of the rehersals vs the actual thing!!
Never really seen it before, works really well
Adam has really been honing his editing style, so dynamic!!
See what Adam did with the same idea, for the video of the Games award music set. This guy is not just an awesome bassist/musician, but has seriously good video editing chops.
What an absolute bastard.
Adam should patent this
@@warpatato or teach it on skillshare
I'm in a shitty band where we play just for the fun of it, just for ourselves. And I have no delusions that I'm anything less than on the bottom rung of the musical ladder. But it blows my mind that pros can rehearse a song for 10 minutes (as a group) and nail it.
I mean, I can run within a factor of two of the speed of Usain Bolt and I don't run at all, but when it comes to music ...
You can do it too! Just learn hundreds of songs and you'll realize most music is based on patterns. Memorize these musical tropes in all 12 keys and you'll have a much easier time.
You've been running/walking all your life but not learning new songs... It's just an experience thing I guess
It freaks me out that my music teachers can consistently be able to instantly play the song I want to spend the next month or two learning.
@@dresdnhope It was freaky at a music competition I was at the judge picks apart the guitar piece, borrows a guitar and plays it flawlessly, goes on stage and plays the piano set piece while giving advice paying attention to pedals and dynamics then in the night stages she does this tuning thing for voice coaching on the switch between head and full voice. This woman critiqued about a hundred performances a day in various instruments and genres for 2 weeks and can just pick up all the set pieces and play them well enough to coach on. That was scary......
Indeed. That's the real shocking difference between the trained pro's and the rest of us - not how fast or flashy they can play but how little rehearsal they need, if any.
Josh Bailey is the epitome of bass player's best friend.
Can you please make a video on bebop? Analyse licks, phrasing and dynamics. Also improvising over really fast changes. If you have other plans for videos than these are the questions for the next Q+A
@Reuben Botha You *beat* me to it. Man, I was so ready to recommend Bebop for Noobs...
Check out Aimee Nolte's channel. Friend of Adam's, loads of information on Bebop.
@Reuben Botha I watched it before and I love it.
@@sergej100qca4 Good for you! Now check out Aimee Nolte's stuff - just look up "aimee nolte jazz licks" and "aimee nolte improvising over changes." Great stuff.
How the E# do you make these documentary like videos all on your own? They are very well cut!!!
this is my day job! thank Patreon.
thanks im going to use this as my expletive now around my music theory buddies
@@forgetful9845 you're welcome! :) I also like "what the fugue" very much
@@AdamNeely you're the good peeps man … !
Adam Neely and you are a magical wizard human.
This drummer person is super positive and nice, I surely enjoyed watching this breakdown. Thanks, Adam
His name is Josh Bailey. Super cool dude.
Adam, I always appreciate the quality of your audio mixes.
Right? his videos are a delight for headphone users
Everyone’s expressions after the bass triumphantly enters 🤣🤣
Of course the bass player was the one, who came late to rehearsal.
I hear this being shouted by Glenn Fricker.
@@digitaljanus NOOO THAT'S WHAT I WAS GONNA SAY!
Rule #2: Uh, I actually don't know what it is, but it has something to do with bassists being stupid and I think it was created by Glenn Fricker.
...because they're sick of being the only ones that know the material and have to sit around and watch an individual practice before they get to the band practice they actually signed up for..
@@normmacdonaldrules4602 When playing music the bass either opens the song (early) or starts a few bars in (late). So maybe it's a philosophical thing. :p
Honestly, these gig vlogs are probably my favorite kind of video from you Adam. It's always so interesting seeing the thought process behind rehearsing and performing these songs with so little time to practice them.
These videos always give me shivers. The amount of skill is just amazing!
Love these gig videos. So cool to see the process! As always, thanks for sharing!
Nice! It's interesting having gig vlogs from the other direction - instead of talking about what you're gonna do, talking about what you did.
Halfway through the video now and every performance is just so good, I need to get out to NYC and see you live (also god bless Josh Bailey, love him sm - the way he quickly describes music to you like in this vid and the Uber video are too good) keep it up, Adam
Yeah, Adam has cool friends. Charlie Rosen, Josh Bailey, Zac Zinger, Ben Levin... the list goes on. Such cool guys, wish I could l could sit down and have coffee with them and just chat about music.
This music is awesome. I love hearing what you and friends are up to. Thanks Adam
These gig vlogs are so well-edited and super cool to watch! Thank you so much for this video, Adam!
These gig vlogs are super informative, thanks, especially I learn so much from Josh explaining the ins and outs of the songs
Amazing editing. High quality camera work. Interesting content. This is why we like Adam Neely
This is amazing stuff! Thanks for these videos Adam!
Adam this is some of the best content on UA-cam, the combination of great editing and amazing content really is a treat!
as always, this gig vlog was so well put together. thanks for posting!
these are just soooooo good. the jumping from rehearsals to gig is just amazing.
I loved this. It perfectly shows and explains how the sum of parts is truly more and often greater than the whole; in how harmony is constructed by individuals together to create a structured, beautiful form.
These are literally the only vlogs I care about.
So well done Adam and team.
Love the work, effort and documentation.
You need to upload full videos of this live performance, “Island” was amazing.
I don't know what I love the most from you. Your musical abilities or your amazing edits on every single video!
Loving these gig videos please keep them coming
Man, I just love the way you edit your videos! Awesome to understand the backstage and the stage.
Absolutely brilliant. It amazes me that something that sounds so off-the-cuff was actually well thought out and rehearsed, even using a limited vocabulary for flexibility in the moment. You guys are world-class musicians to be able to pull that off while sounding authentic. Enjoyed the music as well. This is the first gig-vlog I've appreciated at this level. Keep up the fantastic work, Adam.
I NEED that inner voices whole performance! The small glimpse you show here makes my day every time!
Yo this is super cool. I love these gig vlogs. They’re probably a ton of work but this guy appreciates them. Thank you!
Fantastic mini-doc. Pure joy to watch!
The production quality on each of your videos never ceases to amaze me. Thank you for being such a fantastic content creator!
I'm addicted to your gig vlog. It's really good
Thanks for showing us how you get AMAZING quality in such little time. Much Respect!
Your gig blogs are fucking great man, the editing really shines on these, and it puts everything into perspective.
i love the way you edit those vlogs. How the story is telled has really a chill vibe but u still want to now what's next.
Got a chance to play with Ryan and Dynamo back in December. Made it really weird watching this video and realizing just how small the music world actually is.
4:42 "What's that like?"
*_Oh, you know, Adam..._*
Great editing. Fantastic playing.
Man, this is incredible! Gigging must be a blast! Can't wait to do that someday.
These videos never cease to blow me away.
Thanks, Adam. You remind, and inspire me to push myself as a musician.
I love these videos, Its unbelievable the sound pros make after two rehearsals...
That was incredibly fun to watch. I love those gig vlogs.
Man Adam, I'm an aspiring musician myself, and everytime I watch your videos, I'm incredibly inspired and excited for what the future holds for me. You just perfectly capsulate the feeling of a gig, and every gig vlog is something special. Keep it up!
Such an interesting and behind the scenes perspective! Amazingly fun to watch!
so good man , love the gig vlog stuff ! thanks man .
Oh jeez you seem to have so much fun. It could be the editing style but there are tunes flying all around and you are you rockin the shit out of them. Amazing. Keep giving out such a positive vibe.
I love your Gig Vlogs so much! Super cool, high quality content... Top 3 Channels on UA-cam!
These gig vlogs are so fricking good, they're my favorite
One of my fav series on youtube
Adam is just the peak of musical content on UA-cam when it comes to these gig vlogs
great job Adam! I enjoyed every second of it!!!
Awesome video! Great insight into your work!!!
Thanks. Nice insight in to how you guys think. I checked out their page. They really should publish some live recordings, because the energy in those small clips in your video was really good.
This looks like so much fun and like a great story you could tell. That’s one of the things I love about your channel, everything is like a great story and sounds like so much fun. It’s something I would want to do, keep it up man.
I’m getting PTSD just imagining how many hours this took to edit
Interweaving the conversation about the songs with the songs is a great way to watch this
This was so badass. Loved it!
Great video man, awesome playing as well!! Killing it!
Oh my god this is beautiful,
can you upload a video recording of the whole gig? Sounds amazing
I LOVE GIG VLOGS pls keep making them
Please make "checking tempo, not Instagram" a shirt. It'd be great to support you, and it's nice and snarky, too.
Tristian Bangert I would buy it, because I deal with it lol
Excellent video! It's so crazy to me that there are just countless amazing artists out there that I will just never get to listen to. There is a countless amount of amazing music coming out of all sorts of pockets around the world. Kind of a weird feeling.
Such a cool and well-done video, thanks for sharing!
Amazing video man. Blood, sweat and grass roots. What a show. Lucky audience.
this put a damn smile to my face.
makes me miss performing ever so much
This is one of your best videos in a while.. Great stuff!
You make music fun Adam, thank you 💛
absolutely great!
Before watching the rest of this, I have to say this is very interesting in so many ways. I feel you. Wonderful artists, fresh takes, wise words, a fascinating insight, many good pieces of advice hidden like little gems or like stars on a clear night. I bet musicians will be able to learn a whole lot, if they watch this with care and or interest, and with ears wide open... Thank you for this unique and most inspiring video!
Fantastic video. Those gigs must be a thrill to watch! Wish there was more music like that in Scotland! Also if anyone has similar artists to recommend I'm open to that!
Wow, amazing talent you guys got there!
Dude this was cool to see thanks for sharing. Really cool project
This was incredible. x
Thanks Adam, very cool!
So impressive Adam! Very limited rehearsal with what appeared to be, fabulous results. Big kudos to you and the musicians and singers. And...your shooting and editing skills are something to behold. Great stuff!
Finally de gig vlogs are back!!!!
The pinch harmonic lol always cool thrown in, Looked fun!
I would so love to get to attend a gig like that. And watching what you guys do makes me wonder if I actually am a real musician or if I'm just kidding myself. It makes me want to learn, learn, learn.
Please more videos with Josh! I love the drum/rhythm section videos :D
I never knew I needed this kind of content so goddamn much until you finally delivered it
This is fantastic full stop.
Love this vlog!!
Really enjoyed the music on this gig vlog!
Loving the gig vlogs
Gig vlog uhuuu
I love to see it, in particular because I don't live in USA so I can discover bands and places go when I will visit the country.
Great video by the way.
Cheers
Killin it Adam!
Loved the part with Josh Bailey talks about dialing back and focusing on supporting the vocalists performing. Sometimes it's easy to forget when we are playing in a group that it's not about us, our sound, or what we want to do. It's about whoever is the "lead" of the moment, and where the audience should be focusing their listening.
That Trumpet is incredible !
