The Downbeat Podcast - Jay Weinberg (Slipknot)
Вставка
- Опубліковано 23 сер 2023
- My guest this week is Jay Weinberg, drummer for Slipknot.
Coming from a musical background, (his Dad is Max Weinberg of The E Street Band) Jay is a super humble, hospitable human and phenomenal drummer. We talked about his time in Slipknot of course but also about learning 200+songs for Bruce Springsteen at 16 years old. We also chat about drums, tattoos, doom metal, and much much more.
This episode of the Downbeat is the first of a trip to Nashville, which was actually born out of Jay himself expressing an interest in doing the show.
Thanks to the patreon we were able to make it work.
Quick shout out to Juhani Vuorisalo, who offered to be the Colorist for the Nashville footage.
That's why it look like a movie! www.juhanivuorisalo.fi

What a sick looking set, surely that was a stress free process to put together
Honestly Craig is so lucky it's all on rails at this point, he can really just relax and cash in on the former grind.
Prior to the podcast he had the most relaxing week ever, he said.
lmao
🤣🤣
🤣🤝
We need a follow up episode NOW
2.5 hours?! Are you serious?? We do *not* deserve this but holy shit I am so glad we're getting it. Know you went through hell to produce this content for us all and I'm very appreciative. Super excited to watch this
Speak for urself mate. I deserve this
Dude has the power to literally be the cockiest drummer in the world, yet he's the biggest sweetheart. Such a joy to watch.
Good upbringing! I think it helps he was around the industry his whole life - it kind of demystified it for him
He's definitely calmed down.
He was not so respectful in his prior band.
Love seeing his growth.
Jay, his name is Jay.
Dude is a rockstar with a massive band and is so humble about it , lesson to be learnt by everyone
Well..... he was.
I'm thankful I got to see Jay live in March at Melbourne Knotfest, I can rest easy knowing I got to see that legend live in the flesh- his precision, poise and creativity elevated The Knot more than anybody could ever hope to achieve. It's bittersweet, they booted both drummers who both ended up being generational talents for the same band- but I know Jay will be an upgrade for literally all bands he decides to play on with, he's still young in his music career and I have nothing but love for him, he got me started in drumming.
Anybody else here after “the announcement” 😳😳😳😅?
This episode better hit 1million or imma rage! Downbeat for life!
56:35 UMM GUYS IT HAPPENED AGAIN
Right??? I thought about it like omg Craig are you creating this!?? Haha
I knew this episode would be interesting, but this is on another level.
Huge, HUGE episode!
Welp... this hits a little differently now... 😅
Yeah so are we just throwing a perfect stamp on this one? Yeah? Cool, sorted.
I think we can all say this is the best podcast in the world
It’s mental this came out months before Jay’s exit
MATE - The absolute PEAK content from Craig just keeps rolling!! These guests are out of this world!!!! 🔥 Mario? Jay? We’re looking at you Lars and Thomas Haake 👀
I kid you not this is the best podcast on the planet. So many talents with such in-depth attention to detail!
It's actually insane how this podcast has grown over the years. Been a fan since 2019, keep crushing it! 🎉
Grew up with Conan O'Brien and always gravitated towards Max. It's incredible to see Jay carrying the torch in such an epic way.
Jay has had enormous shoes to fill in so many ways. It's amazing to see how down to earth he is. Would be totally understandable if he had developed an ego to go with all the success.
Dude I love how stoked he was there to be with you and share his stories. That was awesome, Craig!
Holy good fuck what a pod cast. ask Jay a question and he just goes off. An interviewers dream. This was brilliant!
yep. effortless
29:29 - "This is blowing my mind" died of laugh.
Right into that conversation about Bruce and click... My jaw was just down!
Common Craig, he told you off-camera, right?!
Jay Weinburg is the 🐐 imo. By far my favorite drummer of all time. Not just because of his talent but who he is as a human being.
Instant classic. You’re a awesome
interviewer, perfect blend of asking interesting questions and letting Jay talk. WHAT.AN.EPISODE
"How many velocitys of the dog?" Best sentence to ever be said anywhere ever
Love this interview so far (halfway through)! Jay is such a down to earth dude and I'm pumped that you were able to talk with him, Craig!
Patreon RISE UP lol. So happy to get to listen to this early.
Fantastic episode 🤘🏻Jay is one of my favourite drummers and even more so now hearing how involved he is with his process!
R.I.P Slipknot
THANK YOU FOR THIS!!!🙌🏼
This band has a history of treating their members like shit.
Offcourse cause Shitknot is a trash boring band
Very cool podcast, I listened to the whole thing in the background while gaming.. I love Jay, he is one of my drumming inspirations, and he seems like a great guy as well. You love to see it
Absolute legend, and an excellent host as always. Thank you
Huge respect for Jay. Dude is real as hell and we need more people like him. Loved this episode ❤
This is killer. Good work my dude. Glad to see all the heart ache getting this set up paid off 👌
Jay is just the best. So humble and so chill to hang out with.
Yessssss my dude! Chuffed for you! Also amazing long episode, Jay is awesome
Loved this episode mate! Keep em coming. I love that you're meeting your drumming heroes in such a candid way. Can't wait to see what your upcoming guests will be. Cheets!
Bro this was such a class episode. I’m 2hrs 13min in right now and it’s the first time I’ve checked to see how long was left, and only because I thought “how long have I been watching this”. Such an awesome conversation, and I reckon you’re deffo mates now 👍🏼
Wow. This was great. Jay is far more lovely than I already expected him to be.
What an absolute treat this pod was. A eye opening episode bro, I mean I knew he was a freak of music nature but fuck this pod uplifts him into an how new realm. What a guy, thanks Craig ❤
STILL an awesome episode....even after watching it 9 batrillion times!
🔥🤘😝🤘🔥
Love this. Thank you both for an honest and pragmatic conversation.
Genuinely outdone yourself on this on Craig. Brilliant episode. Conversation flowed effortlessly, and the detail in the chat was top shelf!!!!
I think this might be my favorite episode yet! Jay is so fucking cool and tells great stories. You smashed this one Craig 🙏
The best podcast on the planet! Amazing work once again❤️
Great episode, Jay seems like such a genuinely nice chill dude! Looking forward to the rest of the Nashville episodes now, the room looks sick.
This is the best drum related interview I've seen yet and don't worry it doesn't all have to be about drums what makes us love musicians isn't just the music it's the feeling, the art and the creativity behind the player
This episode was awesome!! 2.5 hours!! What?! Thank you for all your hard work getting this done.
I love the moment when you are going through some inner turmoil about potentially getting a friend fired, and he just says "yeah! love having justin in my corner :) " LMFAO
same way Mario dodged the "did they give you weed?" question about going out with Lars and Kirk lol
Great episode!! Jay really seems like a great person on top of being an amazing drummer.
Side note: visuals and audio are great!! Especially knowing all that shit that went down behind the scenes!
best 2.5 hours i had in the whole week. thanks for this, CR
Thanks, nice podcast and Jay seems like a really nice guy!
All the stress of the Nashville situation was worth it from an audience perspective because this episode was very very good. Jay was fantastic in this. Looking forward to more Nash episodes.
One of the best Episodes yet! Killed the set up.
This guy is on another level! So good to listen to jay!
Loved it man!
This has been such a treat 🍻
2 of my favourite drummers this is so epic keep up the great work craig
Listened on my drive across Idaho today.
Absolute banger of an episode.
The 1st time catching your pod. With JayW. What a hang! I could have went another 2hrs. The shop talk was great. It was all the extra stories that makes this one a treasure. Thanks 🤘
I think what really makes this podcast is that Craig has a lot of experience in the subjects he talks about with his guests. He's a musician, he's toured a lot, he runs a business, he knows a lot of people in the industry so he can ask very good questions which often lead down tangents but are still so very informative and entertaining. Compare that to other interviewer/podcasts who's main experience is being a journalist you end up with questions like "who are your top 5 dictators" 😂
thank you
@@reynlord666 you are very welcome Craig. I've been following you for a while now. You've been very honest and informative about a lot of things, music and personal wise which is very refreshing from the usual social media veneer you get
Such a nice guy, great episode Craig!
Very nice interview! very chilled, cool topics, and great audio and video! I had to wait until I had a less busy day to watch it, as it’s 2.5h, the length totally works for the interview. Now, 2h in knowing Craig was drinking this algae stuff every day out in a Nashville, plus went out every day, I can’t help what his gut is feeling right there. Interview was awesome.
Great interview!
This is just visually stunning 👌🏻
This is sooo interesting 😵I have the feeling I have known Jay for a long time, this is the first time I see a podcast or interview with him... It's weird, it was like hearing a friend talk about stuff after years of not seeing each other 🤣 Thank you, for the episode! 🫡
Great listen! Jay is an amazing drummer and a very engaging guy.
i fucking love this so much. these literally make my weeks so much better!
that was such a well articulated displate ad.
That’s our Craig, smashing the ever-loving heck out of it!
love hearing jay talk he always seems super chill, love watching his visits to the house of masks with aj , ive been playing guitar for 16 years and started learning drums this year love this podcast as always rad to just hear guys shoot the shit
Sweet interview. fantastic drummers talk. sweet. drums are important. life is importANT. ❤🎉
Looks absolutely stunning. Jay seems like such a nice guy.
Your fckn weird man stop
Craig that was fucking great, you certainly have a gift behind the kit and just as skilled with The Downbeat.
I was anticipating this one.
Great podcast! Such a good person and one of the best band ever.
What an awesome episode
What an awesome interview. Grew up watching his dad on Conan Obrien. Great interview Craig!!
sad he is out of slipknot now, looking forward to seeing what he does next. that being said- you HAVE to have him back on some day to talk about what happened!
Whatever I find jay either a podcast like this or the house of mask or anything he is always such a cool guy. really patient and down-to-earth. We had a lot more like him in the industry
Love the podcast 🤘🔥
this episode was great. really cool to hear about Jay's experiences with musical heroes, drumming for gigantic artists, and the bit on Magick and "coincidental" stuff.
Great video, nice one Craig 😎👍👍
been watching all his amazing videos he's been posting lately. they are so insane!
Yo good for you man. Huge fan of you both.
Awesome episode
This conversation is incredible. I wish I could have seen Jay live with Slipknot. But, I am totally down to see him with any other band.
What a lovely chat with lovely people
Awesome!
Jay is NEXT LEVEL talented! Rock on 🤘🏼
Sick episode, needs a follow-up when Jays next in the UK.
Super episode!
The DOWNBEAT official 🐐🐐🐐🔥🔥🔥
My mind came back to this show after I heard what happened to Jay. Could have listened to y'all for hours.⚡⚡
Here after Slipknot “parted ways” with him :/
I'm one of those weirdos who doesn't like Slipknot (I know, I know), but this was a great episode. Jay seems like a cool dude. I don't know 300+ of any songs, and I couldn't imagine trying to learn that at 17. My ass would have had an anxiety attack just from trying to process playing for Bruce. Hell even for Slipknot! Toss in no click track, the riser, the heat, the costume. Fuuuuuck me.
Leading up to this, I saw a few comments complaining about nepotism. That might have opened the door for him, but nepotism didn't learn that insane set list. Nepotism didn't land his current gig. Jay's hardwork and dedication did. People just love to hate. Especially in the metal world.
Crack episode. The set looks great! Really does have a movie vibe going on. Can't wait to be drip fed the rest of the Nashville run.
I don’t think it’s that uncommon to not like Slipknot these days… they have not been releasing good stuff for a minute. To many only first 2 records are considered good. For me it’s the first 3… after I have not been able to get into majority of their stuff. All in all it’s a matter of preference
Great pod🎉🎉
sick interview
Love this episode man, I hope Jay continues to have a long and successful career as the drummer for Slipknot
Sorry to say it , but he was fired from the band like 1-2 months ago
@@Le_T38it was sarcasm
@@Pyr0nEx oh okay haha, i didn't notice it XD
This episode is incredible. Downbeat has almost replaced tv for me ive been listening/watching so much lately
