Thanks. You answered some questions I had about this sort of set up.

Glad it was helpful! Unfortunately I've read many discouraging accounts of electric companies going to extreme lengths to prevent DIY solar, even if it's permitted and up to code.
Even then, the financial incentives all but disappear.
In Southern CA you MUST switch to a time of use plan instead of a tiered plan. $0.45/kwh once the sun goes down vs $0.30/kwh flat rate on the tiered plan.
They also only pay around $0.03/kwh for any excess production.

Nice setup Tim. Even your local power company was ok with your solar, in my country you will get a special hefty tax on a monthly bill for micro solar grids which negates any savings and in the same time their PR says how they support renewables.
It would be pretty cool if you can make it to be a permanent solution but id recon you will need tilt system to put alteast double your projected power output and save even more.
    P. S. That other dude Jack Butler is a legend. From time to time i rewatch how he survived Gobi desert or Majorca adventures with ebike charging in Lidl parking lot.

The local power company has a list of approved inverters and unfortunately this isn't one of them.
(This was just a quick video for fun - luckily I didn't end up in trouble with the meter running backwards for few hours).
The power company also shifts the billing from a flat rate of $0.30USD / KWH to a "time-of-use" plan if you install solar. They charge $0.30USD/KWH when the sun is out then ~$0.45/KHW between 4PM-9PM (when everyone gets home from work and uses the most electricity).
They then only pay ~1/10th of that for any excess energy you produce for them to use.
I've heard of many towns disincentivizing solar even more.
Like you said - the PR departments love to talk about going green, but when you actually do they make it a nightmare.
**Jack's solar e-bike was definitely a sweet build! Hoping to see more of his cool van build posts soon!

There are a few different flavors of grid-tie-inverters. You might be able to find one with a lower input voltage!

How can it be legl to have a male connector in that inverter provide power?

    • @VanwithTim
      @VanwithTim  Рік тому +2

You can have the inverter turned on and stick your finger in the 120v male outlet and not get shocked.
The grid-tie-inverter will not produce electricity unless it sees 90-140v AC from the power grid.
If the cord were removed the 120v output of the inverter would immediately shut off again.
If it were a standard inverter you would surely get electrocuted.

Do you really think that cheap "grid tie" inverter it going to provide fail safe conditions? Just turn off the Main. Sheesh
